What Happened to Bad Boys?

- What’s the all-time best buddy cop movie ever made? 48 Hours? Lethal Weapon? Beverly Hills Cop? Rush Hour? The Nice Guys? In terms of story and dramatic action, any one of these titles warrants serious consideration. But when it comes to the onscreen rapport and natural chemistry between two stars in a buddy cop movie, it’s hard to beat Bad Boys - the directorial debut of the divisive filmmaker Michael Bay. Sure, Bay has earned a rightful rep as a bold and boisterous music-video director turned filmmaker who favors big, dumb, pyrotechnic excesses over quality cinematic storytelling.
Bay does deserve at least a modicum of credit for pairing the comedic talents of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence together as Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett - two immensely likable Miami narcotics officers who trade crackling banter and witty one-liners whose onscreen partnership drives the engagement and entertainment level. Indeed, without the effortless comedic energy and comic timing displayed by Smith and Lawrence, there would almost certainly not be a fourth Bad Boys movie headed to theaters.
But get this. Did you know that the original title Bad Boys was Bulletproof Hearts, conceived as a starring vehicle for SNL stars Dana Carvey and Jon Lovitz? Hell, did you know that Eddie Murphy and Wesley Snipes were first considered to play Mike and Marcus? Better yet, are you aware that most of the dialog was improvised by Smith and Lawrence due to a problematic screenplay that Michael Bay downright detested? Well, we’re about to peel back the curtain and detail the checkered production history and find out for real, What Happened Bad Boys!

From my understanding, Michael Bay disliked the script and told Will Smith and Martin Lawrence they can ad lib
Yeah, I know, I thought I read this somewhere.
And that's what made the first 2 movies classic.
Umm... The video literally mentions that
I also heard that the movie was originally called "Bulletproof Hearts".
It's also said that Michael Bay paid 25,000 out of his salary to get the last shot of the bad guy biting it. Still to this day he's not happy with the final cut.
One of my favorite movies and overall franchises of all time. I think it deserves to be part of the list of best buddy cop movies and franchises of all time.
So glad to see u give nice guys a nod as best buddy cop movie. I think that is the most criminally underrated film of the past decade.. It is an absolute masterpiece
miss this martin
Rush Hour hands down.
Feels like a slap in the face
No money or script but the film is infinitely better in every way than Bad Boys II, one of the worst sequels ever. Smith became a Hollywood star but it’s Lawrence that really carries this film. The edit is great, I wouldn’t change anything.
Bro bad boys 2 is amazing don’t know what talking about 😂
The first Bad Boys will always be my most favorite of the franchise.
I liked one because it's essentially Michael Bay before he went full "Bayhem" like with Transformers or Pearl Harbor.
Sure it's essentially another rehash of Lethal Weapon, 48 Hrs, Tango & Cash and etc., it gets a bit cartoonish at times, but that's why I like it.
- Its an action movie with some comedic moments to give it some levity
- Despite the far fetched plot, it's executed pretty well
- Sure the characters are kind of cartoony at times, but it's done in a subtle way so the characters are more fun to watch rather than everyone being annoying or overly serious.
In short, the first Bad Boys is the film I come back to the most. It essentially takes what worked for an 80's buddy cop/action comedy, and gave it a fresh 1990's coat of paint.
100% agree ! Bad boys 2 is fun but absolutely mind numbing at times with how much over the top action is in it & I really thought for life was baaaad, I like how this one is more subtle and less action heavy
It was a gamble having the stars of MARTIN and FRESH PRINCE Headline a buddy cop action movie.
Not really the whole movie was a gamble. It wouldn't of been what it has become if these 2 didn't play those roles. Eddie already had his cop movies. Wesley was already doing his thing, and probably already mixed up with Dr. York cult by then. Lovitz would of been a 1 and done maybe 2 just bc of his fan base. But bad boys is what it is bc of will and martin.
No it wasn't. That was pure gold. They whole hood came out for that
they neck to neck
Y'all really put a store ad twice in a 15 minute video?
Martin Lawrence absolutely owns the OG film. He was the Lead. He was funny as fuck in the Sequel too. I love him.
Amen. Thats what makes this movie different, more special, and better than the rest.
He did have top billing
Honestly, the less money you give Bay, the better his film's turn-out. Let's face it, the extra money would have all been spent on pyrotechnics.
And teenage extras
14:40 I’m not sure if I’d say the more recent directors of Bad Boys are more talented than Michael Bay. I’m not a huge Bay fan, but I think I’d be remiss not to give Bay his due as one of the more influential American Directors. As far as being Oscar worthy, I’m not even sure what qualifies a movie as being a contender anymore.
100%!
Do Armageddon. That movie has crazy behind the scenes stories.
I'm surprised that it took so long for the sequels to come out. I thought we'd be seeing Bad Boys 7 or 8 by now. Lol!
From what I heard, Lawrence was notoriously difficult to work with.
Bruckheimer was talking about that recently. He wish they made more sooner.
Damn, imagine Eddie and Wesley from the 90s in these movies, wouldve broken the bank.
The constant adverts, the consistent plugs for the 4th film; is this a fun film retrospective with trivia or a paid sponsorship????
The first one was really good, the second one was good but not as good as the first one and the third one was kind of crazy but it was entertaining. I hope the fourth one is good.
I saw the 4th one and I rank them 1, 4, 2, 3
The first movie was the best, but the recent one was pure bull. I watched it for 5 min and walked out. It was cringe worthy.
Damn that bad? Can you elaborate on what took you out of the movie?
I know sometimes I go into a movie and a plot hole totally takes me out and almost makes me leave. But sometimes you can look past that and accept a movie for what it was.
Like fast and furious, you got to turn off your brain to enjoy something like that 😅
14:30 this recurring, deeply illogical, tacky delusion that the post bay movies are better than his...
What happened? The infamous Will Smith slap. His career is sadly over.
Another one coming? The last one was GARBAGE.. First and second are great though.
My centmens exactl!!! The last one was overly convoluted.
Bad Boys is fantastic just the way it is and I love the score as well
For anyone wondering: THIS IS AN AD, for the upcoming film.
You must be new here lol. Anyone who's watched videos for this channel know they always put out content like this. Lol
I love bad boys but lethal weapon will always be number one to me.
Lethal Weapon was great, unfortunately, Joel Silver couldn't take his jealousy of Shane Black out of the equation, he trashed his script for, Lethal Weapon 2, and, didn't involve him after that, so, we got one classic, one obscenely overrated mess, and, two dumpster fires, tragically pitiful development, no doubt.
@@matthewdaley746 you love bringing that up don't you?
@@matthewdaley746 All four Lethal Weapon films are dope GTFOH with that nonsense you spewing
The narration for this video was so bad it has me actually wishing for an A.I. narrator! What's with all the yelling and screaming?! FFS, the guy yells every second syllable, giving meaningless emphasis to random words for no good reason. No wonder everyone is so dumb these days. This is what they're watching!
Great rundown, but enough of the disrespect to Bay. The franchise wouldn't exist today without his trademark style - he makes movies people pay money to go and see in theaters (which is more than what we can say for plenty other directors). He's always been an awesome director no matter how many explosions.
Lethal Weapon
0:35 THANK YOU FOR SAYING IT PROPERLY “A video director turned film maker” instead of a “FORMER video director turned filmmaker” it drives me insane when they use former and turned in the same sentence its a double past tense the turned makes the former unnecessary & confusing. Its like hes a former musician turned boxer ? He is? Or was? Or is formerly both.
The cop buddy genre is my absolute favorite with films like Stakeout, Running Scared and The Last Boy Scout among the very best examples. Sadly, I was never a huge fan of the first two Bad Boys movies. I did, however, enjoy the third one. Go figure.
@@matthewdaley746 I agree. I don't think there is one Michael Bay film that I actually like. The first Transformers, maybe, but even that I have problems with!
Just look at the mess they've turned Lawrence's character into in the third and fourth installments.
👍👍👍🎥
I havent seen bad boys II since i was a kid. Didnt know most disliked it. Probably need to rewatach as an adult.
Why is a Sony Pictures Classics logo used for Sony Pictures is used for this video?
Imagine having such a masculine ego you can't tell another man you love them 🤦♀️
I think Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall would have crushed it as Mike & Marcus.
Yea they are also very talented but it would be a diff movie but still a top comedy action movie but im not mad the duo of Martin and Will is fantastic and it keeps growing over the years
Bad Boys movies are the greatest movies ever made
can you do what happened to the haunted mansion (2003)?
If will doesn't work some type of slapping joke into the next bad boys il be upset a little
Bad Boys the first part is the best!
please do Bad Boys II now
Bad Boys, Rush Hour
Interesting. When the script sucks, improvise. But, this takes talented actors to pull this off.
Jon Lovitz and Dana Carvey as the original cast members is crazy.
Which one would be the millionaire playboy cop?
@@FlyingTigersKMT no clue
neither lol @@FlyingTigersKMT
They also made a bad boy video game have some of the cast for vocals in the game
Did you refer to the directors of Bad Boys 3 as superior to Bay? Seriously wtf? BB3 & 4 are absolutely trash
I'm giving a dislike just for the title of the video, nothing happened to Bad Boys
This first film at least back critics were tolerable with the director right because it was less excessive and it had an actual plot am I right
This is an awesome movie despite one outdated joke
A+ for the research. As usual. Best on UA-cam with this ish!
My best friend and I snuck into this movie back in 4th grade. Such a great flick! Kinda worried if the 4th will be any good
@@matthewdaley746 doubt that. Recent years have proven Hollywood is capable of destroying anything
Same, meand my bro snuck into Bad Boys 1 when we were kids. 1st rated R movie i saw
Jerry Bruckheimer always looks bored to me.
IMO Chris Tucker is way funnier than Will and Martin combined
Back when Will Smith was cool
Now he’s a chump
😂🙄
Yeah. He kinda messed it all up being a super cuck
😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊@@FoundaPeanut
this the best one the original the rest is pure garbage 🗑️
This is definitely on the list of best buddie cops movies. Martin Lawrence and Will Smith had fantastic chemistry
I agree. It’s one of my favorites and I’m so excited for the new one.
Lethal Weapon still best.
BB is one of my absolute favorite franchises and BB4 is right there at the top of my most anticipated movies of the year... As for Will, was what he did right?? No it wasn't, but people need to start getting over themselves. It's been years now and Hollywood has produced FARRRRR worse people then Will.
I would agree with you if it wasn't for his absolute garbage apology video. He was far closer to making excuses for slapping Chris rather than being a man and admitting what he did was wrong.
BB1 is Awesome, but BB2 is off its fuk head..
Still prefer Lethal Weapon.😂
The movie is objectively bad; but it shows that Smith, Lawrence, and Bay put everything they got into it and made it what it is.
You're referring to the sequel
Sure it's on the list of best buddy cop movies, but it's far from the top..
It’s top 3 in my book
Damn movie was garbage😊
If Chris rock is the bad guy in bad boys2, and he gets to pummel Will Smith, then I will watch it.
You're 21 years too late.
@@lukewright9031 It shows how much I actually care
The first two movies were not exactly masterpieces
Skipped them
The third one is the only good one
Thankful Bay decided to step out of the directors chair
When you actually watch the movie and try to follow it and break it down…it’s one of the worst movies of all time.
Bay is boss. This writer and narrator aren't.
I used to have admiration for Will Smith until what he did, no apologies can distract from the type of person that does that kind of thing.
A truly deplorable human that doesn’t deserve his status.
Y’all make it seem like he killed a person. Get over it 😂😂😂
@@screamrad218 awww did someone's opinion offend you buttercup?
@@screamrad218 when chris rock pops will in the mouth and takes it like chris rock took it, on national tv, then he will have the respect he lost.
@@screamrad218 will need's the takishi69 treatment rolled up in a bathroom, but chris rock is too good of a dude to do that to him.
All-time best buddy cop movie? Running Scared with Gregory Hines & Billy Crystal. So underrated and so damn good.
Buddy cop movies will always have a spot in my heart. ❤🩹
