In last weeks video I talked about how the best communicators that I know first spend a lot of time listening and understanding their audience and only after that craft a message customised for their audience.
So if last weeks video talked about how to be a good sender of messages to other people, in this video I’d like to talk about how you can be a good receiver of messages.

As someone who recently used Pusher, I must say it is really easy to work with and it is really really good not to mention it's fast af.

You know what's funny? I misread the second part of your comment, because I desperately need punctuation to understand anything (sometimes I need punctuation in places where it's grammatically incorrect - well, I'm weird like that). What I understood was: It's a really good idea to not reveal the information that Pusher is fast af. -> was confused till I read it out loud.

I really enjoyed these last two videos, I think it is helpful to assume better about others especially when there's disagreement.

It's also about not suffering, like being aware of our misinterpretation and by extent adhering with the 2nd Agreement "Don't take anything personally" of Miguel Ruiz.

I wonder how many other people feel like the grew up in a family where debate was the norm and not discussion. Great video MPJ.

I work with my closest friend who recently became my boss, and things can be pretty tense sometimes.
But damn this video opened my eyes, and now I must do my best to save this friendship.
By the way I love your show MPJ! Discovered it two weeks ago, and your "teaching" (NOT a course lol) made me improve so much in JS :)

I feel the chair in the background is underused. I would be awesome if for topics like this MPJ would sit and hold a hardcover book in lap, glasses and a pipe(not mandatory). At least for an intro, or just for gags. MPJ, keep up the good work.

I think most technologists are somewhat introverted so we don’t know how to take feedback constructively. We take a lot of pride in the work we do and when someone critiques it, we get defensive because we take it personally. We must learn to remove the emotion from the feedback. Another big problem is that a lot of critiques come in the form of written communication. The written word does a poor job of conveying tone (other than ALL CAPS TO DENOTE SHOUTING!!). If you are working in a team and you want to improve the team’s interaction, I highly recommend that you (and your team) read “The Five Dysfunctions of a Team” by Patrick Lencioni. It is a great book!

I strongly agree with almost all of your points, especially your book recommendation, but I would like to take a firm stance against the trend to conflate introvertness with bad traits more commonly held by introverts. Introversion means that you recharge by being alone, it does not predefine your skillset. I have introvert colleagues and friends who are fabulous public speakers, and excellent communicators. It very important that extroverts do not use their extroversion as an excuse to be brash and take over meetings, just like introverts should not use their personality trait to justify being shy or to avoid conflict.

Great perspective on this. So many people neglect the importance of good, effective communication in software development. I try to think of software as I byproduct of a team working together. When people are able to work together and communicate, a good product is likely to come out the other end. It helps me frame my work in a way that values effective communication and empathy towards my coworkers. Thanks for your thoughts on this MPJ! 😊

Transactional Analysis (Eric Berne) is a very good look at this subject and helps to understand what is going on. Games People Play (also Eric Berne) is also a fun read. Both will change the way you look at situational dialogue forever.

Good Monday Morning!! Awesome video. Really like how you metaphorically give examples and relate it to the real world scenarios.
Could you possibly make a video on how to deal with difficult people in the IT industry. I had a colleague whom I used to work with who was a very good developer but would be very hard to convince, because he knew he was a good developer .He would rarely listen to other's unless it was a direct order from the manager. He is not a bad person just that he is very proud and does not acknowledge the right things .I am quite sure you must have come across these types of people and I would love to know your, or the audiences thoughts on how we can deal with these types of individuals.

Know many people like that :-(
Past success can sometimes confine a person to think inside his "success box" and actually hurt his ability to improve and move forward...
