@@TheBean87 Capcom = remakes. Sorry, although they have all been amazing of course. Insomniac have been creating games from scratch (and the sequels have been using similar assets I admit). But, not only that, they have been setting the benchmark for game optimisation with ray tracing and the next Gen consoles. No one else comes close imo.
Insomniac definitely are taking PS5 up to it's limits and its awesome, thank god that Microsoft never tried to acquire them at the time when they developed Sunset Overdrive, because by that time, they weren't not as committed as they are now. Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart and Gran Turismo 7 are the reason I have a PS5 between my Series X, Switch and PC.
I think (hope) that one of the improvements to RT is Insomniac would use cube maps for reflections in reflections, so they might already have the cube maps to do a non-RT performance mode. And if remember correctly Ratchet and Clank used SSR even on RT modes to improve detail (when in Screen space)... The improvements of RT from Remaster to MM to Rift Apart were all good, so definitely interested to see the improvements here...
Honestly I bet it would be cheaper to just do extra ray bounces for reflections in reflections than to try to do cube maps inside reflections. But also, I doubt they will even do reflection-ception at all because no matter how you go about it that's going to be a TON of performance lost for an incredibly minor amount of visual gain that's only visible in specific scenarios. That performance would be better spent elsewhere, such as on increased resolution or other effects. Maaaaaybe for like a PC only ultra setting meant for a 4090. It's just like you were saying about the SSR. The reason they still use SSR in ratchet is because the RT world is quite simplified compared to the primary world anyway. Probably better gains from making the first bounce of RT look better than from adding a second bounce or cube maps.
@jaredgregory9075 A second ray bounce would be preferable personally, even if it had no shading applied and was just the raw BvH structure for the second bounce. And I don't know what would be less demanding, nor even if a second ray bounce is doable with Insomniac's ray tracing implementation (as their's send rays throughout the entire map)...
I think a good idea for a future video would be to look into what improvements/downgrades there may be in the final version of the game compared to that first gameplay demo we saw earlier this year or even this new story trailer.
4k is a pixel count. Videos use compression to save bandwidth when streaming. The way it generally works is instead of having a series of unique frames all saved individually (which makes 1 min of 4k video several GB) you have a key frame, which is a full rez image, and... Well a basic way to say it would be instructions on what pixels changed to the next frame, and the next frame, and the next frame, until you get to another keyframe. So one min of 4k is a few hundred MB instead of several GB. The bitrate is basically a way of describing the quality of the info for the frames in between keyframes. The higher the bitrate the better each frame looks but the larger the file is and the more bandwidth it takes to transmit it. Lowering bitrate saves space and bandwidth but tends to lose fine detail even though the displayed images still has the 4k pixel count. This is all of course an ELI5 version of it and probably mostly technically wrong, but I think it illustrates the concept well enough.
Good info bud. Would love to see a PC test on Rift Apart, one with HDD, and a another with SSD using 16gb graphics cards. See if Sony were being honest about the difference an SSD makes. My bets, stuttering and even load screens, especially on the mining planet when switching dimensions.
If you look at the recommended specs the only way they suggest an HDD is even usable is on very low. My guess is at that point they have stripped out so much quality that most stuff just fits in the 8GB system RAM and swaps back and forth from RAM to VRAM without even engaging the HDD much. Although if that's the case then that does make me wonder if you had 32GB of RAM and a 16GB GPU if you could still run the game on higher settings with an HDD.... This will certainly have some interesting analysis videos!!!! I'm very curious to see if 8GB cards can match the visual quality of PS5
I wonder if MJ's hair could be backported in first Spider-Man on PC with mods, once the sequel will be released for that platform. And maybe port the old face to replace the new one, which is way worse.
Didn't all characters use the spline system for hair rendering in the remastered version? Bit confused since you're showing the remastered version while talking about cards and polygons.
