  • Part 1 out of 3 "Removal"
Replacement of the oil pan and timing cover gasket "engine in truck" for our 1999 Chevrolet Suburban C1500 OBS 5.7L 350 vortec. It was probably an 8 hour job with filming.
Note, I believe 96-99 will need the engine lifted a couple inches to get the oil pan gasket out.
    Parts list.
Oil change- 10w-30 and S5 oil filter.
(Note- it took 6.5 quarts to get to the full mark, there was lots of oil left in the pan and in the oil cooler when removed. )
    Oil pan gasket kit- Fel-pro OS34500 R
Timing Cover and gasket- Dorman 635-505
Buy a water pump gasket separate, I used one in my timing cover gasket kit and didn't use the rest
Red RTV, brake cleaner and lots of towels
    Tools list.
    Oil and coolant drain list
Typical mechanics hand tool set, I use dewalts 192 piece set DWMT75049
Fan clutch wrench 1 7/16s or 36mm or 57141 rental from autozone
Harmonic balancer puller 57187 rental from autozone
Jack, jackstands, engine lift, chain, and a way to tie to the engine.

You're the only one who did a video on a 5.7. Everybody else has the easy 5.3. I've been trying to figure out how i can get my pan off with out removing everything underneath.

Yea it was hard to find one. I was hoping I didn't have to lift the motor, but that ended up not being the worst part of the job.

IMPORTANT TO NOTE: on my 96 tahoe 2wd there's a hole directly under the oil pan above the cross member. cover that hole with a rag or something because if you loosen a oil pan bolt and it falls in that hole, you will need to dig it out. i used a telescoping magnetic pickup tool and thankfully it worked. presumably the hole is on atleast all the 95-99 tahoe's / suburban's / silverado's and gmc related. don't know about chevy's in general.

I have the exact same year and color Burb. Went to do the oil pan last year and found out I’d have to lift the engine to get it out. Knowing about the timing cover now has me shopping new chain and what not

Did the pump replacement work for you ? I have a 98 burb and experiencing low oil pressure ! I’m gonna change mine this coming weekend ! Thankfully mine is lifted so all I have to do is drop the pan !

I had a leak, and my pressure was good.

@@treyhaberman what was it before and after ? You did the High volume pump right ?

@@mikezanolini4933 no sir. I had 60psi on my oil pressure so I left the pump that was in it and just changed the gasket. I always replace with high volume pumps in the 350s I've worked on though.

Thanks for the video. I have a ''97 K1500 5.7L and plan to do this work in the next couple months. Timing cover, oil pan gasket,...Any thoughts as to what else I should think about replacing while I'm down there?

Water pump and timing chain set wouldn't hurt. They are fairly cheap and are right there.

Thanks for the video. How much time was the total? I have a 99 K1500 but its a 4wd.

Took me a whole day, but would have been quicker if I wasn't filming and I didn't have to purchase and assemble an engine lift. I would give it a 6 hour job with cleaning included. 4wd will make it a little more difficult.

@19:31, are you using 6 ton or 12 ton jackstands?
