They really hate repair shops.

From the $200 exclusive ear plugs to how hard they make it to get to the battery, you'd think this was an Apple product.
Man, if you need to replace the battery you're kind of in a nightmare situation, unless you are really comfortable doing this type of work.
Great Teardown and you the first one who tried it. Brought mine yesterday and this helps me alot. In Germany we only have 6 month warranty for the battery and 1 year for the sticks (I think ?). Anyway iam thankful and hope stick drift wont happen on long terme use...
It would be cool to see someone modify this, push android and get emulation running on this. Sony missed a huge portable gaming market with this

When the battery swells with time. Depends on the strength of the adhesive. It can pop off the screen or break the panel.

You actually raised a very good question about the "accessible" battery...
Here in Europe starting 2027 all portable devices will have MANDATORY replaceable batteries, and just like you said, this is a device that will be around for another 5/6 years, I can already imagine the headaches for these big companies - smartphones, gaming consoles, etc... It will be hell.
By the way, how did it end up with the right controller ribbon?
And concluding, this really shows that this device is definitely not user-friendly and I can already see the amount of technicians running through this video just for potential future repairs/mods...
Yeah, I've heard that and it's already forcing some companies to change. I know that's why Apple changed to USB-C, even if they'll never admit to it. This will definitely need a redesign for that because it is not accessible at all. Same will go for the next generation Switch. It will be a bit of a crazy transition for the companies, but hopefully it won't be terrible. (Granted, I live in the US, and I don't even know if most or any of the changes will affect us here)
The odds of this device, much less this specific revision, being on the market in 2027 is low.
Well deserved hell, I must say, it is overdue that a region with enough buying power is mandating this.
This device was probably in development for years, the rule only came a few months ago.
Sony can easily put a battery door on the back of this device, if it proves successful with an audience beyond scalpers.
Well deserved, i'am tired of devices with not swappable batteries. I get why they do it with waterproof devices, but this there is no excuse to have built-in battery in device like ps portal.

Honestly I'm surprised no one took it apart before you I have been looking for videos about how to take it apart just so I know if I could easily replace the joysticks in case they get drift I have two Gen 2 DS5s that have drift already lol. So glad you made this video thank you.

Same as other dude said been typing disassemble videos since well before launch they never heard of the video you're talking about. My algorithm definitely doesn't show it.

For future disassemblies: Don't pull all the adhesive pads (under the batterie) at once. Pull them one after another. :)

This definitely wasn't made with Repairability in mind because of this being identified as an accessory

@@mikloconte6506 this handheld is in no way a portable console, like Graf said, if you dont own a ps5 you cant use it at all and its pretty much a cloud streaming device which I hear people do already and sometimes better with their tablets.
This is basically Sony's way of telling shareholders 'no one likes handheld portable game consoles' anymore so they dont need to make a PSP revival
ok but it was produced under the name of console, and Sony patented it as such. There are official press releases, patents etc that demonstrate this, I agree with you but the law is worth more than our opinions

Yeah, I had some crazy erratic stick drift on my PS3 controller until I stuffed a piece of paper in to add pressure to the connection like you said. Thankfully it's a quick, easy fix that lasts a long time

I’d imagine that processor is nothing special just there to run the screen and send data back to the console. The three antennas are nice to see that should give you a nice strong signal close the the console.
I'm pretty sure it's the Snapdragon 662, same CPU as in the motorola moto g power 2021, and the Xiaomi Poco M3. Best it can handle is GameCube at ~30fps.

Yep, and that confirmed my suspicion when I saw a leaked video someone posted of a Portal pre-production or production unit running an AOSP debug build that I presumed came from Android development target source code provided by Qualcomm and was being used to run factory tests.

That's such a terrible comparison lmao. It's doing that with emulation, and being able to run a 30FPS GCN game means being able to run a 60FPS GCN game, because 60FPS games on GCN are less demanding per frame.

Some model psp's also used pressure point contacts for the analog stick and speaker.
The portal just became the next ps5 with how hard it is to get.
It's a bit of a fail that they didn't incorporate the edge controllers' swappable thumb sticks. The simplicity of it would have been better instead of all these screws.

The SOC is most likely a low end smart phone SOC, so it potentially could be used to run maybe PS1 games :)

@@parknich081 Judging by the code, it's probably a custom snapdragon 4 gen something. The 662 is SM6115
Might be even lower then a snapdragon 460 (SM4250-AA)

Playstation Portal could have been a cool handheld that plays all the ps5 games on the go but its just a streaming devicve sadly. Better save up another 200-300 dollars for a steam deck
It's ironic to say that the Playstation 3 Slim had the armor of a war vehicle and an extremely robust construction.
Great content, finally managed to see whats running inside it.
With some bootloader exploit it would be trivial to make it run stock android or even run linux.
Sorta reminds me of the Gamecube keyboard controller, had one for PSO 2 back in the back
Parents will be angry this Christmas when they find out how bad the PS Portal is when their kids start using it or that the PS Portal requires having a PS5. I can see the customer service lines in Walmart, Target, and Best Buy being a mile long after Christmas and a lot of angry adults getting denied a refund for their new item. Lol Sony not a good look.
Gold contacts like this are basically what phones use for the vibrator, speaker, focus laser on high end android phones as well, sometimes they go wild on put some everywhere.
Basically any components that has needs 4 wires or less can use this system

This thing is so difficult to access I wouldn't be surprised if Sony, instead of repairing faulty ones, they just throw them in the trash and get you a new one.

The psp joy stick, at least. For the slim. Model had those same pressure contacts, i havent seen any other devices with that until. This psportal

I’m baffled at the connector style they used for the screen on a portable device, one good drop and now your screen connector is loose.

I really like the PlayStation Portal device and all, but I might actually hold off probably another year or so before getting one for my PS5 if I ever do decide to finally get one sometime.
Go for a Steam Deck. You can play games nativity like Balders Gate 3 and Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart nativity offline, but you can also and even do PS on the Go stuff on it as well, at least in the US is starts around $399 for a new one and the OLED upgrade with WiFi6 is in the $500s I beleve. I have been loving my Steam Deck! It's worth it!

Hi, nice job, about the WiFi could tell us what professeur or antenna they used. We want to know if it is WiFi 5 or 6
The best thing you can do is add antennas like I did. It really improves the signal strength and actually makes it where it works without disconnecting so much through walls and everything else and you can now download at the same time and not have tons of issues like before if you just add some extra antennas, I really don’t know what PlayStation was thinking. There is three antennas in their total two of them are dedicated for their new headphones and one of them is dedicated for the Wi-Fi service which is a little bit ridiculous so I added a few more and fix the problem.
Where did you buy the antennas? is it easy to do?
So that’s what the problem is on why it constantly disconnects I sent it back for a refund I couldn’t deal on my iPad I can remote play my ps5 without disconnecting and reconnecting that’s constantly happens with the portal !
If it was stand alone as in wi-fi connect like the old ps console were then great but it's NOT it a £200.00 Paper weight for playing games while sat on the toilet in your own hose in the next room to your PS5. total waste of money spent it on games instead.

You’ll need the internet to get your Portal setup initially (sign into PSN, download a patch, etc.) but once you’re up and running you will only need your router assuming your PS5 and remote play device are both connected to it. Then you’d only need internet afterwards for firmware updates down the road.
For example- I have 2 PS5s. One is wired to my main router and my 2nd is on WiFi in my basement. I fully intend on taking out an old router, wiring it to my second PS5, and using it for remote play in the event my primary ps5 is being used by a family member and I want to remote play off my 2nd PS5. So on my second PS5 if I want remote play- plug in the Ethernet cable. Want to play PS5 normal? Unplug it and it will switch over to my main routers wifi with internet.

the unable to propperly tear something down to fix components is a feature in expensive cars too
Same my iPad air and a dual sense have worked with no problems but within hours the portal has had artifacting and lagging

No that processor is only there to run the lcd screen and send data back to the console. That’s it.
Pre release it was running a stock android, so it's feasible. The portal also has Airplane mode, which is odd as that is for Bluetooth connectivity, meaning it likely has Bluetooth in the WiFi radio that's disabled. Time will tell if someone roots it and runs a custom version of android.

Can't wait to see if someone roots one of these and installs a custom android rom since the early leaks showed android running on it.
It uses a snapdragos SoC. It's definitely possible, it'll just take someone with the knowledge to invest the time to do it
I'm not sure since it's hard to tell exactly from the video, but the battery "stickers" you ripped off seems like they might be battery pull tabs like those typical of that you find on phones
So next time maybe try pulling gently and very slowly and carefully on them, also try pull them as flat as possible, as in at 180 degrees relative from the battery not 90 degrees angle
That's how those pull tabs works the best, if you have or can make the clearance (but still it can break if you're impatient and pull too hard too fast, so just try carefully and slowly)

WARNING to anyone who is thinking of buying. You cannot connect to any wifi network that is a business location such as hotels, coffee shops, anyplace besides your friends house. If it requires opening a browser to get access you cannot access it. Sony support is less than apologetic a out it and has no idea what you are talking about when you call and says it's jot a problem with the portal.
Make an Hotspot with you phone^^
You also going to have to bring your ps5 every where you want to play it so it's really not practical outside the house lmao.

They should of at least us DL games onto the device that we can play offline. Imagine just taking your SSD and placing in the Portal just like a game Cartiage.

It appears they went out of their way to produce this thing for as cheap as possible, it look's less sophisticated than most raspberry pie projects.
This is one of the worst teardown videos I have seen to be honest. He butchered the thing open and didn't really add any insight to what we're looking at inside the device.
Presumably the battery being directly beneath the screen, which is only removed via heat/the general very low ease of repairability?
I wish it can be used to connect to the ps5 without the internet. Like if I just want to use while at home and my internet goes down which tends to happen a lot in my area.

Knock on wood, my unit has been working great. Outside of that egregious initial firmware update process that brought PTSD flashbacks of PS3 system and game updates.
I wonder if it could be possible for us to DIY an oled screen on there to replace the LCD…ideas

I don't see how Sony didn't make this a console of its own with possibility of remote play. Ik the ps vita flopped but portables are back and doing ok. (Ik it could take a bit to find the correct components to put in it)

Im convinced Sony designed Portal with planned obsolescence in mind. Gonna call it now. the battery is probably garbage that will deteriorate within 2-3 years. Or worse, the battery explodes and takes the whole device with it.

The hump at the upper back seems mostly unnecessary. It's just empty space.
