This thing really should have included the option to have a signal directly between the Portal and PS5 (as long as you are within a certain range of the console) for a consistent, solid experience. And then allow wifi for all other scenarios.

@@c1nnabun The Vita did allow this with the PS4. Though my experience with that wasn't great. Whether using wifi or the direct link between the Vita and PS4, sometimes it would be playable, but more often than not it wasn't. This was even with me holding the Vita inches away from the PS4.
So even if they had included the option to do a direct connection between the Portal and PS5, I still would have waited for reviews to see how well that worked, but at least it would have been a step in the right direction.

Yesterday while playing the portal my son came in and said our WiFi had gone out. And it had. We had an outage in the area but the portal stayed connected the whole time and never disconnected. I even switched games to see what would happen and it let me play. I don’t know how this worked but it did.
I love playing my portal sitting next to my router PS5 and big screen TV.

I do this with my switch all the time. Sometimes I’d much rather game in handheld mode than my 65in oled

For me its awesome I can play my ps5 everywhere I have great 5g speeds so I just use my hotspot and it works perfect for single player games

@@michaelmyersplays4992it could easily. They could easily make a steam deck esque portable that could play psp in 4k, and ps2 and ps3 games. Devices like the ROG Ally can play almost all ps4 era titles at 60fps, they are missing a lot of potential here

They should have added the replaceable sticks the edge controller has, I think it was really stupid not to incorporate them....its only a matter of time before these sticks start drifting
So, it's only a matter of time before you need to buy another one? In other words, more money for Sony.
That's my concern to going to wait for the replaceable sticks if they ever come out going for the 3rd controller soon.

@@subtegral I think the point was that it doesn't have a "no hassle" connector to charge, just a standard USB-C port (in an awkward spot). The Vita dock was just a Vita connector in a plastic housing to hold it up, similar to Switch's dock. Simply using it would wear out the connectors over time. 3DS and Wii U pad had exposed charging contacts so it just has to sit on top of a matching charging port (usually on a dock).
They want you to stay in the ecosystem
@@Appl_Jax I don't think the Vita 1000 charging dock wears out the USB connectors over time. I think owner abuse wears out the connectors over time.
There was also a charging dock for the Vita 2000. It was small, black, and oval. I tried looking it up online a few years ago and it's almost like it never existed. I know it existed because I once had a 2000 model and the dock for it. Now I have a trusty crystal white Japan model 1000 that I installed a new battery into. I also rebuilt a sapphire blue Japan model a few years ago and sold it. TMI?
to be fair docks are so 2010, i was surprised to see pins on the ps5 controllers lol
It would have been cool for an added bonus if it played digital ps classics, psp, and vita games natively giving it some form of use above cheaper competitor options that already do remote play, not really seeing the hook here besides "official branded in-house product"
It's an accessory not a new handheld console. If the PS5 doesn't natively have any of those you mentioned then what makes you think the Portal will have it? 😂
That will be $300 - $400 dollars.
What other options? People keep talking about the Backbone but hell if I'm going to play PS5 with controllers attached to a stupid phone screen.
What competitors? 😂 Backbone is 100 dollars but worth 25 and an uncomfortable pos for what it's worth.
This things an accessory it's not trying to compete in the saturated standalone handheld market which steam and Nintendo dominates. It's a niche like the ps headset and vr stuff. This is aiming at millennials and budding parents like me. im enjoying the heck out of it.

The sticks are very easy to replace so probably not. We’re likely to see a ton of returned systems from people who didn’t realize you needed a PS5 though

This thing would’ve honestly been more useful during the covid days when you’re just stuck in your room and if your ps5 is in the entertainment center just get your portal and play your ps5 while you’re stuck in your room
It's winter. Most people are at home. And if you work for a living, you probably want to spend the few hours you have each night sitting back or laying from the comfort of bed.

At the end it's a more expensive "Wii U" Idea. I already hear ppl in my location, talking "i buy it's it get's reduced in price". "Not worth over 200"
I returned mine. I have 600mbps internet with a mesh system and the lag was real. I even tried setting up a static ip for my ps5 . When it worked well it was great but it was a 50/50 shot that the lag was there.

Steam deck and rog ally both can do remote play. I tried the ally. Windows on a 7in display sucks . I sold my steam deck for it and retired it. I may grab the oled deck. It can remote play my pc and ps5

This device was released in mid November. It's a useless product for $215 with tax.
I believe that the SG4150P Is actually a downclocked SM4250AA aka snapdragon 460 (Nearly Identical to the 662 In every way).
I wouldn't be surprised if QUALCOMM gave Sony a custom model number if they made a slight change or just binned version of the 460.

You didn't mention there is no web browser so some wifi connections that require a login cannot be used. Basically you are still locked to using it on your own WiFi.
I got one. I absolutely love the thing. I had 1 disconnect during the roughly 15 hrs. I’ve had it connected to the console for. And it reconnected in about 5 seconds. No issues on Wi-Fi with frame rate or blurry noisy graphics. Even with 3 other family member streaming UA-cam I have had no hiccups yet over Wi-Fi. The ps5 IS NOT hard wired into my Starlink router.

Well you didn't tell the whole story, like how fast your internet is. I'm still on copper wire, the upload speed is really mediocre (30mbps), if I have multiple people streaming videos at the same time I may have very blurry video on the PSP.

I'm loving mine. Playing Astro again along with Spider-Man 2 and Red Dead Redemption. As a gamer and a dad, this gives me the freedom to game how I want. And I can escape to the shitter and play without mounting a TV in the bathroom.
It bothers me when talking about something like the PS Portal or cloud gaming everyone seem to focus only on input latency and image quality, nobody seem to bring up the fact it eats up your internet cap.
You know, not everyone has the luxury to have unlimited or lightning fast internet, most people outside of the United States use capped internet with varried download speeds, also unlike UA-cam and Netflix where the video is pre-recorded and is highly compressed streaming games require a constant refresh in high quality.
If you are using a portal its not using your internet connection to transfer data it's your inside wifi no data is wasted for steaming a game from your console. Streaming a game from a server outside of your home costs data. If you are somehow using data why streaming from a console in your home you have been hacked and someone is routing your data through them then back to you to monitor what you are doing.

The PS Portal streams from a PS5 using WIFI and not Internet, but SONY will probably enable PS Premium/ Cloud Streaming later. They even recently acquired iSIZE a company specialized in video and data compresion probably to address data volume
So does streaming TV shows and Movies and nobody brings up that when talking about netflix. This is no different. If your internet can't handle it, don't get it.,
@@PsychologyOK Yes it does get brought up. Data usage is always huge issue when it come to any kind of streaming. Game streaming uses way more data though than netflix/youtube.

What I would like to know is if the Dual Sense functions are fully supported. When in remote play using an official Dual Sense paired with an iPad, some games will give rumble, but no adaptive trigger. Some will adaptive triggers but no rumble. Could you let us know if it works fully as if you were using a dual sense natively with PS5. This is the only reason I’d buy one instead of keeping to my current setup. Thank you.
On third Dual Sense controller in 3 years also starting to suffer same stick drift issues. Original SKU and new. The ultimate stress test with Portal will be time, and I don’t think it will fair any better.

@@XVNRXThe DS4 that came with my launch PS4 got stick drift and the DS that came with my launch PS5 also developed stick drift. Had to get a new one to finish FF XVI because the game has like a zero percent dead zone. I never had any stick drift on any other console. Even my launch joy-cons are still fine. It’s been only DS that came with the console for me, so I’d also be cautious about the Portal if there is no easy way to repair it.

@@XVNRX have you considered the fact that you have 5 controllers means likely you cycle through them so each one gets less action. Less play will decrease the chances of any wear and tear, accidents, etc. Most players have 1 or 2 controllers at a time which just increases the rate of handling. There’s so many factors besides that too. Casual vs 6+ hour a day players. Clumsiness is an issue on my end. I’ve got the habit of letting my controller fall off my arm chair . Afraid it’ll land the wrong way someday. 😅

The fact that it doesn’t have a web browser to access hotel WiFi is a major flaw, how are you supposed to take this portability if you can’t access most free WiFi, and no I’m not going to hot spot it for an hour

Nope. Bluetooth does not work, you have to pay 150-200$ to buy their dedicated Bluetooth headsets along with a 500$ console to get it to work.

@@asdfdc1946 The Wii U seemed to be an attempt to adapt the DS style of gameplay to a home console. But that idea was flawed from the start because the DS screens were attached to each other so they would always be in view for the player. I don't think anyone plays their home console with their controller in view all the time.
Even developers didn't seem to know what to do with the Wii U since most games just used the gamepad for menus and maps. It didn't exactly justify the gamepad.
@@OtavioFesoares Not really. Like I said in my comment, the main gimmick of the Wii U was second screen features. The Switch follows more of something like the Sega Nomad or the Gameboy player or the PSP with video out cables.
I’m telling you getting rid of interference is a key thing. If you run it straight Wi-Fi, no hardwire my experience was terrible first day then I went into router settings and changed my 5 GHz network channels.and since then it’s been streaming great now ! I think my 5gh network was getting a lot of interference from neighbors WiFi possibly being on the same channel as me and I also changed display settings on ps5 to 1080p and turned off 120hz mode

Yesterday I played the Portal most of the day. Late in the evening we had a WiFi outage but my portal continued to play and never disconnected. I even switched games just to see what would happen and it stayed connected the whole time. I don’t know how this happened or worked but it did.
If anyone knows how this worked or has an idea, please let me know.
Maybe ur wifi signal is still up but the internet is down. So as long as ur ps5 and portal in the same local home network, it should still work.
Because WiFi and Internet are 2 separate things.
You have a router that has a wifi connection. The router recieves "the internet" and sends it thru it's wifi signal. If there is no Internet you can still access your wifi network no problem.
It would have been different if you were playing over the internet but you were playing over your network.
I added an antennas to mine, and it fixed a lot of the problems. I don’t know what PlayStation was thinking, having not very much signal on this thing and now I can walk between a wall of refrigerator and everything else and it does not get cut off anymore. I do not lose any more Internet signal or anything, it works so much better now I am happy I fix the problem myself
I’m adding this part this is supposed to be a dedicated remote play device. It should work better than any other remote play devices or any remote play on your phone or any other devices Sony literally said it’s a dedicated device and it’s going to be working better on remote than other devices which is all untrue. It works way worse that’s just the sad fact they need to majorly fix this problem.

Shouldn’t have to do that, there’s handhelds that can play 35 years worth of games that have flawless Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and touchscreen out of the box for half the price. Sony should do better, no doubt within a year they announce a refresh with slight upgrades.

@@XRKGX especially when the psp and vita slap, they have the potential to really step into the market and they fumbled it, especially making it a ps5 companion. Most people don’t even have a ps5 still.

Here's what they didn't tell you: they weren't going to do literally anything to stop scalpers from depleting stock before the holidays. I don't care because I have a Steam Deck and can just be patient, but couldn't they more than absolutely nothing to make sure people can get one?
I don't think you'd see a bluetooth chip on there even if it was supported, it's likely embedded in the SoC, the smoking gun would be a 2.4 ghz antenna printed on the PCB
Also, what happens if you connect it to a PC? the SG4150P has a good wealth of known vulnerabilities, hopefully it will be jailbroken soon!
The DualSense Controller chip supports BT already doesn't it? That's how it connects to the PS5? So this technically should have it, just software locked
@@ru2225 yep, but that's in a different role (looking at motherboard pics though it looks like the antenna is connected to the SIE branded microcontroller)
If it's a standard Snapdragon 662 SoC then it should have a BT controller as part of the package, but it is software locked, possibly on such a low system level (hard coded to the bootloader) that it cannot be soft modded to enable it back.
@@elimalinsky7069 even if it's not locked, it still needs an antenna on the pcb connected to the radio on the SoC. If the antenna is not there there's nothing you can do.

I disagree on wireless charging. Feels entirely unnecessary. Also the charge port location doesn’t bother me whatsoever

@@TajographistYes. If the PS5 crashes and turns off, you won't be able to use the PlayStation Portal until the PS5 is powered back on
I tried Astros Playroom with the portal and all the haptic feedback (rumble/adaptive triggers, etc) seemed quite weak compared to playing it with a regular dual sense controller.
I agree with you on that. The control handle motors make a funky sound as they rumble when you play.

@@XVNRX I compared both the portal to my ps5 controller, I feel the build quality of the portal lacks a bit. It doesn’t feel too notch like a ps5 controller while on your hand.

What if you have a lot of disk games? Does the disk of the game need to be in the Ps5 to play?

I get that it would limit its portability - one of its major selling points - but I don't get why Sony didn't offer the ability to plug the portal into the PS5 and use it like a monitor/screen directly rather than streamed. Would make it more appealing to people with poorer wi-fi connections. Just sell it with a 2-3m long cable.
This would of sold me on it. I have a 300Mbps connection and remote play still hiccups for me. This device would make me mad I think just like my tablet using remote play.

Can you change the audio to your Bluetooth headset connected directly to the ps5 console? Use the portal as a monitor and the audio through your ps5 headset? You'd think they'd let you redirect the audio back to your ps5 headset while ur at home at least close to your console.

If I had a PS5 and this portal, I would like to put it to the ultimate stress test. I live in an apartment and I have nephews come over using wifi, so would be interesting to see how it will play with my wifi setup.
Uhh.. Sounds like you're testing your network more than the portal.
If your network can't handle that traffic then split the routing to a separate unit and get a better wifi beaming device like unifier or something 😂

And you can also use the dualsense with your android depending on your setup
The controller being textured and white will make it a hand grime magnet, just like the regular dual sense. Expect to have to clean it a lot, no matter how clean your hands look.
Yeah, that’s just good practice anyway for hygiene. It’s disgusting whenever I see a game pad that’s full of grease, grime, what have you, on the internet. It’s like, how can you let that happen to you equipment? Just like cleaning a gun each time you use it at the range.
My controller is still perfectly white. Wash your hands and wipe it down with a microfiber cloth every month or two. Also can use a tiny bit of distilled water if you need it.
people who write these comments freak me out, ive never seen a dirty controller like these people describe, ive never cleaned my controller in 2 years it looks brand new, and im not a light user. i think if youre getting your controllers dirty you need to re-evaulate your hygene

I keep hearing that the device allows you to play your digital games that are installed on your system. I will often use remote play with a game i have on disc. If it’s in the drive, it works perfectly fine. Should be the same case for this thing don’t you think?
I'll stick with my backbone for my cell phone. And remote play that way.

I’m a stickler for the rules, even on myself. Years ago, my then girlfriend(now wife) went half on the soon to be released Xbox 360. She reminded me that since it was a Christmas present and I had to wait. I did! As for my Portal, it wouldn’t help me as I am on the road and can play my PS5 or Xbox Series X any time I wish. I am also in a hotel room and the internet really sucks.

I bought one of these because I have real problems playing on a TV screen with my eyesight being the way it is and so far it's been great for me, it's made my games much much accessible. I'm getting sick of people saying 'It's a waste of time, bro' and 'Just use your phone and a Backbone, bro' and 'Just get a Steam Deck, bro' and other such comments, usually with 'bro' in them 🙄 If you don't want one, fine..just don't get one and ignore it. Not everything has to be made to cater to you, and sorry it's upset you so much that you feel the need to rage in every comment section about it to seem 'cool'. But do you also hate other controllers that people with disabilities use that are of no use to you, but amazingly helpful to them? And that's not to mention all the other people who find it useful if they have kids or family using the TV a lot and don't want to just 'get another TV, bro' either. I get that people are despatste for another 'proper' Sony handheld but this was never, ever promised as one if you actually followed the news about it. But there's still plenty of us who find stuff like this handy to have.
I'd like to think that the people who make those comments aren't referring to people in your use-case scenario. It's just that the device seems a little unnecessary when I can already do the same thing on my phone or tablet that I already have.
I have a counter argument without using "bro" in it. While certainly there is a percentage of people that might find it useful, busy families, people such as yourself etc. The discourse of people that have positive views of this product is overestimating the market for this, acting as if it is going to have the same success as a handheld console, the ps5 will have 50 million consoles in the market by early next year, this device will mainly sell in US and Canada, so reduce that amount by a lot. Now take less than 5% of that amount. I will really be surprised if it manages to sell 2 million worldwide due to how niche it is.
It's great that it has a market but It's important that we do not pretend it has the same appeal as a handheld.

There's been lots of people coming out and videos saying that it doesn't support captive portal which for people who don't know is the ability to use Wi-Fi that requires signing in like at a lot of hotels in airports..

As someone who plays games away from my PS5 a lot like on work trips or travel or on break this is literally perfect for me I use my phone for remote play all of the time and the screen is just too small so the ability to have haptic feedback and the triggers while having a higher screen quality is exactly what I'm looking for and the $200 price range seems about right too
People will pay £200+ for a pro controller, but will shit on this as too expensive. I've played my PS5 more in the past few days as normally I would only play once the kids go to bed.

Screen is awesome. But the real test for me is to play today in the day time rather than at night to see how the glare comes in to play
@@MURPHYL28 it's not an OLED but honestly it's a really good screen. Everything is a good size to read like subtitle wise it's better than using a phone. Plus it's 1080 so having the higher resolution really helps. My only complaint would be I wish it had a higher refresh rate but for 200 bucks it's really good!

Why is everyone so bitter about a device? I like mine because I’m a new dad and I can game where my child is sleeping, or in bed at the end of the night. Everything isn’t for everyone and that’s okay. No need for the tears and tantrums. Do I wish it had more capabilities, absolutely! But I was using an iPad and my single controller and pairing it every time. Now I have one singular dedicated device to charge. My controller stays downstairs with my PS5 and I’m all good.
Here’s a work around for the whole headset thing. If you still want to use your Bluetooth headsets you can. Why’ll using the portal you can still connect your headsets to the PS5 mute the portals audio and you’ll still get the audio from the PS5 boom problem solved. Only downside is you still have to be in range of the PS5 with the headset but it’s a workaround for now.
This! This is the workaround. I have a wireless headset that connects to a dongle on my ps5 and I can hear the audio super far from the other side of my house which isn’t even how far I need it

If the Portal had two missing features then I would totally get it (i) standard Bluetooth support (ii) play PS+ streaming games direct to the Portal
The ability to play it on WiFi even when away from home is actually something which appeals a lot to me! If I were travelling for work every week still then I could take this with me and play when off work. The wait to play Persona 5 on my weekends was a nightmare!
No cloud streaming is an absolute crime. I would upgrade my PS+ Extra to the top-tier one (Premier?) if I could use it on my Portal.
It should have had its own little internal storage to download a few games and stream games off PS Now. The fact it lacks those makes it not a buy for me, when I can just use my current tablet and a Dualshock 5 to do the exact same thing. I guess the only perk is its a single device to charge and not multiple? The battery life alone on the device would have to be pretty massive to sell me on 'needing' it to have the perfect PS5 experience.

Everyone's best use case for this device seems to be when someone else is taking up the TV. But has anyone brought up the fact that you could buy an entire TV for the price of this thing?
For me, its about wanting to be able to be out keeping an eye on the kids or just out with the family while having the option to game. I get way more use out of my Switch than i do my ps5 because i can play out in the living room while being with everyone. Playing on a console requires me to be in a separate room. With a handheld i can be engaged with the fam and play.
I may be one of the rare people this is for. I bought a PS Vita specifically to do remote play in the early PS4 generation. I put over a thousand hours into remote play and supposedly the streaming has gotten a lot better since then. Fingers crossed🤞

If the portal actually connected directly to the ps5 without the need for an internet connection like the vita did with the ps4 then I would consider it.

Played my first game on the portal last night and it's defective. It keeps sticking and freezing then jumping to the screen adjust menu then back to game then jumps to the HDR set up menu. It even does this on the main menu. Have contacted Sony but may just send it back. Not a good start!
This is why I'm still in the Backbone controller camp. If remote play isnt working well due to the connection strength, I can still play games natively on my phone! Dead Cells or CoD Mobile at 120fps on my Note 20 Ultra more than meets my standards for short term entertainment.
Streaming games will always be based on the connection you have. That remote play, cloud streaming of any type. I've had my port for a few days and use it at home an work. Yeah, some of us leave our house for work. From my limited use it works well for what I want to do. For the games that I want to play it works great that's both from my phone's hotspot and work internet. I know that the device my not be for everyone, but it doesn't have to. That's the point not everything is made for everyone in mind.

@@joshe272 so... the Dreamcast was the last game console they made and the controller had a unique design for it.
Usually the wire or plug-in would be in the front however the DC Controller had 2 slots that took precedence mainly for the VMU integration.
So in order to connect the controller to the system, the wire came facing downward in the same direction as the Sony Portal.

A few thoughts on this:
1. I wish you could watch video on it. I understand pirecy concerns but I just want the convenience of watching an R rated movie without my son seeing it on the big screen.
2. It's great that it's 1080P but most people have 1080P -4K TVs now with a MUCH bigger screen. Unless someone is stuck with a 720P tv there is not much use to a 2nd screen. And besides if someone is able to get $200.00 odds are they are going buy a low cost 1080P TV first.
3. It's ok if you have 2 PS5s but most of us have only one. That means If someone is gaming on the big TV you can't use the portal since it mirrors what they see on TV. So if you wanna fire up the portal for fun it's not gonna go well if someone is playing on the big screen.
4. Should make it compatible with PS4 too. This is a "budget" device (budget compared to the PS5 pricetag) so it makes sense to market to those who still have only a PS4. This makes it inclusive to those on a budget as well.
Literally made for the dad/mom/room mate gamers that never have access to the one TV in the house and its all good until the internet goes out either intentially or not.

All cell phones have the charger port at the bottom, the switch has the charging port at the bottom. Wireless charging isn't something that can happen for a $200 device.
