Tuba Skinny, 1st Set @ Place du 14 Juillet, Andernos-les-Bains, France, July 27th, 2019

- The sudden change from very hot dry weather the day before, persisted into Saturday, July 27th, 2019, with rain and gloomy skies, in Andernos-les-Bains, France. It had been announced that rain might stop Tuba Skinny from performing in the open on Place du 14 Juillet, their only venue for the day. To the great relief of everybody, they showed up and gathered under a large parasol, escaping the rain, that now had turned into a light drizzle. The full accoustic 1st set, videographed sitting on a tripod, while crouching under an umbrella squeezed between head and thigh, here for you to enjoy. Captured with a hand-held, SONY HandyCam, FDR-AX100, in FH quality mode.
Tuba Skinny this time with: Shaye Cohn, leader, cornet; Craig Flory, clarinet; Barnabus Jones, trombone; Jason Lawrence, banjo; Max Bien Kahn, guitar; Todd Burdick sousaphone.
Signalling fascinating as ever: see how - with no more than a slight raise of the cornet at 6 mins 11 secs - Shaye lets the back line know they are about to switch from Theme A to Theme B of 'Memphis Shake'. And then with a tap on the head at 6 min 57 secs that they are returning to Theme A.
It has been long noted how Shaye Cohn(the titular leader) directs the changes to provide the sound and continuity of the group. Due to her family history, and her multi-instrumental talents, it is no surprise that her cues/directions would be followed.
@@southernloff1494 Agreed; though I don't think she sees herself as 'titular' LEADER. The group claims to be acephalous. However, there's no doubt that she always directs the traffic during performances. See my articles:
playing-traditional-jazz.blogspot.com/2013/05/giving-signals.html
playing-traditional-jazz.blogspot.com/2013/05/post-73-quick-introduction-to-tuba.html
The tap on the head (which is visible in many Tuba Skinny clips) is easy to translate; "...from the top".
@@victorlloyd5271 Yes, indeed. For more on that and several other conventional signals, see my article:
playing-traditional-jazz.blogspot.com/2013/05/giving-signals.html
Curiously, though, on this occasion - to be pedantic - they do not go right back to 'the top' (which would be the four-bar Introduction); they go back, as I said, to Theme A.
sHAYE COHN...BRILLANTE.....

How can such an excellent band seem to get better and better? But they do!

Your show was THE sunshine in this rainy day.
Listen to you brighten my days at this time of uncertainty with the pandemic looming over our heads, guys thank you for the sweet and precious music 🎶
I love this style of music and its hard to find a quality band like this, some try but end up sounding like a mess. This group shows the care they enjoy with the blending and not trying to over power each other. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. Loads of LOVE from North Carolina.
Can anyone give any background on the resonator guitar used in the band? I have recently seen Web Mo using one very similar. Thanks to CANDCJ for documenting so many concerts and doing it well.
Amazing.......sigh...I left France in 1962....... You guys rock!
Yeah Hun.. I love your band.. you are doing so very good...!
Tuba Skinny is one of the best traditional Jazz bands in the world. Impressive performance. Thank you for that , all the best

Shaye....Where did you learn to play like that....Your terrific. You guys are all right on. I'm almost 80 and heard lots of the tunes you play way back when I was a tyke. My Dad was a musician ( Sax & Clarinet ) and loved Dixie land music. Only wish he was alive to hear you guys. I don't think you all know how popular you are on the You Tube Circuit. Good Luck to all of you and come to the NW if you can.
You made my day william with this comment
Can't put into words how much I really LOVE this band ! ! Thank you for SO MANY happy hours. Greetings from Teresa Cambridge U.K.
Thanks friend makes me happy
More More More of this , it makes me happy
Chloé ... (en 3) , toujours aussi jolie !
...and good news, Lionel, is that it's on two of their albums - 'Tuba Skinny' and 'Blue Chime Stomp'.
i've been trying to work out who Shaye reminds me of, Wingey Manone No, Herb Alpert No (Just Joshin), Kenny Ball No, it was a toss up between Buddy Bolden and Bix Beiderbecke No, then I realised it was Shaye Cohn, you cant mistake this unique style. No I in team though, all really superb musicians . makes me happy. ta very much.
Eine wundervolle Musik, bitte kommt mal nach München!
No dejen de subir esos grandes músicos me gusta mucho 👍⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐. 🇲🇽😀
I appreciate the effort CANDCJ put in to film the band. It is far easier to stay pulled back with everyone in view. For me, all these closeups and midrange shots are more interesting, and I appreciate including the audience from time to time.
Awesome as always, this is what I listen to up here in Michigan with a cup of coffee in the morning gets me motivated
Get’s me off on right foot in mornings. Especially Chalmette Sunset. Wonder When was it written & what the writer was going thru?
Can wait rot catch you in person!
Thank you for filming this lovely set. I have seen some single videos from this set on youtube before. But not the first tune here. This is "Kiss Me Sweet" I love them special. Regards from Germany.

Great, great music !!!
No me canso de escucharlos 🇲🇽😊👍
Awesome ! Thank you so much for recording you keep me up to date with Tuba Skinny!
Merci beaucoup! Hard to pick a favorite version of Deep Bayou Moan, but this would be a contender; Craig's solo especially nice. AND very interesting that they now have cookbooks! Thanks for the merch table closeup. Hopefully they'll sell them online as well, especially if they include Shaye's illustrations.
Gracias por subirlo.

I have watched your vids for some considerable time and love the music, you are a truly talented group, guess you don't have room for a harmonica player. My ear is Jonny Peulo which shows my age, extremely old.
When they first started there was no one around listening...as far as I could tell....and then....later......
Muito Lindo amei o som😍 vou me escrever😀😊

" Erika Lewis did join the group later, in the 2nd. Hope to post the set later this week - it is worth waiting for!
Benny Goodman (Craig) and co. on cornet and trombone really have transformed this band into world class. Even the sousaphone guy is good . But where's the washboard player ?
Basic fun :)
Шей Кон такая милашка !!!
Sure Shaye now directs the band but who started it ? Erika ?
No washboard ?
A question quite ofter asked. Robin had a commitment in the States, which he could not refuse. His last session on this year's European Tour was in Atur, west of Bordeaux, July 24th.
A great performance, not yet posted by us.
The band is brilliant, as usual. However, the notable difference is that almost none in the, presumably, French audience is responding emotionally during performance. They seem to be very reserved, almost cold, unlike any American crowd I've seen. Perhaps it was just because of the rainy weather.
Could be because that which they are watching is not French. However, I suspect it was the weather, as other performances posted from France have had a great response from the crowd.
In N.O. the response is ‘just BETTER’ by our Louisiana standards- but the response here does not mean they do not appreciate & You do make an interesting point.enjoy the music & show.
Mais où est donc la planche à gratter qui donne le rythme avec ses sandales ?
Hi @lucienpierre, The washboard man, Mr Rapucci had to leave their European Tour after Tuba Skinny's appearance in the small village of Atur, a couple of days earlier. He had to fly back to the US for teaching, which he could not back out from. Still there are many epique recordings with a smaller number of TS musicians like this. In fact, there are three rare recordings from Atur east of Mensignac and Anglet, that are not published.
n Brazil there is a Same Music Style call "Tocata" the difference it is a Music gospel, but the instrument is Tuba, Trombone, Clarinet , Saxophone and Accordion to do a rhythm . The people don't dance because is a music gospel's. Searcher to Tocata Pavao Bonito.
Where was Erika?
13:04 Getting her hair done!............................More kidding.
She's there: 8:25.
I thought France was in a heatwave?

Good music...but it looks as if they’ve all just found out that they need to go to the dentist...why are their expressions so pained? Music should be fun to play...they need to show it. Nice to listen to...boring to watch.
I like watching every second along with the wonderful music...so much better than listening to only records, tapes, etc. like we did in the past,
@@lewieq9596 , How right you are! Getting this close to Tuba Skinny with a camera following the music, one get to see expressions in faces and body-language, often a small sign of satisfaction. Truely believe each musican here tries his/her very best, every time. SlipF18 BustedFlush just have to get a better and bigger screen and watch a bit more! Very much Tanks for you comment, Lewie.
Perhaps you need find another group .
No more until a clarinet replacement
