    All I'll say is you never see a lich who regrets their new form and power. Vampirism is the power of a daedric lord, corpus is the power of a disease, but lichdom? That's the power mortals took for themselves.

      Or better yet make the phylactery out of an extremely tough, if not indestructible, material. Then enchant said phylactery to be even tougher. And THEN, after transferring your soul into it, hide it.
      In addition, do a Voldemort by splitting your soul into multiple pieces and place them into more phylactery’s. Then use the same precautions as above. But with the additional precaution of hiding them as far away from each other as possible.

    Once you're a Lich, you got all the time in the world to make it work for you. And because your soul is not attached to your body you are effectivly immune to being soul trapped. No one said Liches have to be evil.

    • @KainMLK
      @KainMLK 5 років тому +27

      No, you don't need to be evil but you kinda lose your touch with your humanity as time goes by. At first I have no doubt you would restrain yourself to bandits and such but, sooner or later, atrocity after atrocity will make you care less until you start to see other humans as cattle or lesser beings such as you see mosquitoes now. Even if you don't go deliberately killing, you would have no problems in killing that poor milkmaid walking near your cave just because you needed materials for your new experimental purple magelight spell which will make your altar a hundred times more comfortable for reading.

    • @T3nch1
      @T3nch1 5 років тому +25

      @@KainMLK So you assert the position that you either die good or you live long enough to transform into a villain? I don't see it that way. Morality is just as reactionary as it is foundational, a good character doesn't slowly turn into a bad one just because time passes and if you're falling my above mentioned process than you would be building a positive reputation in a populated location, increasing the good interactions while minimizing the bad ones. And even if said Lich begins to adopt apathy and see humans as cattle that doesn't mean that the Lich must remain that way. Don't discount the character of who the Lich was before becoming undead just because you yourself haven't seen a working example of undead that isn't evil. Also I said nothing of caves or alters.

    • @KainMLK
      @KainMLK 5 років тому +9

      @@T3nch1 oh no, but I see the reason of the misunderstanding here. It's not that he would slowly degenerate into an evil being because he lived long enough. The degeneration I meant would occur due to the lich's constant murderous acts. You see, let's compare him to a paladin who is immortal because of some kind of bless and let's assume he is inherently righteous. He will kill many people, that's a fact we can't go against, but all the lives he will take are justified before his own judgement. Now let's go back to the lich. He will kill other human beings to sustain his life. It's not because of justice, it's not to protect someone else, it's not on self defence. He will be murdering to sustain his own life. Someone who is inherently righteous wouldn't do that knowing he would be either obliterating or sending his victim's soul to the Soul Cairn, denying said victim his afterlife. By this point we can already assume the lich to be at least a neutral character. Now during centuries and centuries he will keep killing bandits and other n'er-do-wells for the sake of his own existence, without anything else to justify it. Do you see where I'm getting at here?

    • @KainMLK
      @KainMLK 5 років тому +4

      @@T3nch1 by the way, the cave and altar were just to exemplify with a stereotype a frivolous reason which would lead a very old and detached lich to claim a life without thinking twice.

    • @T3nch1
      @T3nch1 5 років тому +19

      @@KainMLK I see the points you are making but I just don't agree with it because it completely divorces the concepts of choice and accountability. If a paladin can kill all he wants because they are justified in his own mind then how is that suppose to compare to a Lich who would be killing as a source of maintaining its own life? If we are to make that connection than inherently it makes the paladin less human as they have already abdicated choice and personal accountability for their own killing because a higher being already told them too where as a Lich, juxtaposed against the popular fantasy narrative of evil necromancy would be making the choice to only predate on criminals of the beings own morality and rational thought. In this example as presented the paladin is "doing good" not because they want to but because they accept that they are told to where is the Lich "does good" because they choose to.
      Please correct me if I am not understand your point the way you are presenting it but I don't see the act of becoming a Lich is inherently evil or will lead to a character turning malevolent. Nor do I see this link that would morally corrupt the Lich that I'm seeing you imply.

      this is what I thought was the case with divayth fyr and mistress dratha. Theyre both stated as being thousands of years old and sustaining themselves with necromantic arts. I always just assumed that Dratha at least was a lich and was just concealing her true identity. I guess its difficult to tell the difference between a powerful wizard and a lich, since they both live for so long and hoard artefacts + have had centuries to build up massive political power and resources. When the lore says "wizards extend their lifespan if theyre powerful enough" do you think that means through powerful restoration magic, or through enchantments that slow down ageing, or through transforming into undead? I always just figured it was undead. And that they had figured out how to conceal it.
      Would be interesting to see if the other telvanni wizard lords survived the red year and the wars + the events of morrowing. We know neloth's death in morrowind wasn't canon for example... I hope therana, dratha and fyr lived at least

    Being a lich is all about power and knowledge. For the mage that intends to become a lich, worldly pleasures mean nothing anyway, all that matters is the constant pursuit of knowledge and power. Mages that become liches are like the psychopaths/sociopaths of the magic world and could care less about what others think about them. So for someone who's primary ambition is to constantly increase their knowledge in all things, and to increase their power, then being a lich is worth it. Once a mage becomes a lich all mortal needs are no more and any form of emotion, physical desire and empathy they have fade away over time.
    My problem with the "liches" in Elder Scrolls, is that they all seem like they have little intelligence left and attack you just on instinct. I'd much rather have my player run into a lich and have a conversation where depending on your answers decides what the lich does to you instead of attacking you outright. Seriously, if your character has made it all the way through the dungeon and into the lich's lair, the lich will want to know how you made it and why you are there to begin with and may try to recruit you to its service, with the promise of a powerful artifact or spell.
    That being said, in the Elder Scrolls, no a lich is not worth it, because they all seem like powerful but brainless zombies to me, not the powerful, yet intelligent undead being they are supposed to be. It's as if their intelligence and sentience has rotted away along with their flesh and all they know is that someone is in their lair and must die for disturbing them.

      Even in the D&D lore liches once they become too old they start becoming braindead very powerful zombies that attack everything on sight... some of them stop feeding souls to their phylactery and their body decays as they become flying skulls ... the monster manual refers to them as "demi-lich" but it is a mistake that was made in 5e... the demilich is actually an ascended lich who has performed a ritual to unbind himself from the mortal plane and be able to project himself to the atral planes... but all liches once they have just lived too long at some point will just stop feeding souls to their phylactery and just rest/sleep until someone disturb their lair.

    What I would attempt, if in such a situation, would be to bind my soul to a network of black soul gems. I would carefully modify each so that they'd house my soul instead of trap it, and then I would build secret caches around Tamriel. Within these caches I would place many powerful wards, so that none may enter or likely even find them. The caches would contain magicly constructed golems, primarily made of Dwarven metal so that they do not rust. In the heart of the golems, heavily protected and reinforced, would be one black soul gem each. While setting these caches up, I would craft a large soul trap container and enchant hundreds of cheap amulets with a minor benefit in addition to a specialised soul trap spell that would drag the soul into my container upon the wearers death. I would sell these amulets for 75% the market price, spreading them far and wide across the continent. Then, if ever I die, my soul would be transferred to one of my golem bodies, the souls trapped within my container flooding my new body, powering it up and enchanting it with superhuman strength and dexterity. Then, I would go on my way. I would wear a hood, and if anyone asked I'd say I was one of the last creations of the Dwarves, and woke up alone just recently. I'd hopefully find a place that would accept me, perhaps with the mages guild or something, and then I would set about studying dwarven constructs further so I could enhance my bodies with modifications. Then, if ever my body and soul gem are destroyed, I would be spirited away to a new body far away from my attackers. That, would be my form of lichdom.

  • @spaceangelmewtwo9074

    Eh, it all depends on how you use it. You could bore yourself to tears hanging out in some cave, you you could master the illusion magics necessary to appear normal to mortals, which is most likely exactly what Mannimarco did. This is also how it works for the player in the Undeath mod. However, even if you can't do that, you can still always pull an Ainz Ooal Gown and attempt to take over Tamriel to cement your eternal rule after you have become sufficiently powerful. That's what I did in my Lich playthrough in Skyrim. I chose to side with Ulfric with the full intent of ultimately betraying him, using the war to acquire loyal followers while also secretly expanding my army of the undead using the casualties of war. After driving out the Empire, I came out of nowhere, challenged Ulfric in the old Nord way, usurped his crown, and enthralled both him and Tullius. My legions of the undead that the Stormcloaks had been accepting as a necessary evil turned their blades to my former "comrades," while power was promised to those who swore fealty to me. Any resistance would be crushed by the unstoppable might of my magical powers. To make matters worse for the people of Tamriel, turns out I'm a Dragonborn on top of it all, and so the dragons were hunted down and slaughtered like animals, including Alduin, all to fuel my ever growing power. Now, armed with the power of dragons, the forbidden knowledge of Hermaeous Mora and the secret to bend mortals to my will as Miiraak did, the full support of the Volkihar now that I've granted them freedom from their madman ruler and from the tyranny of the sun, the assistance of the Dark Brotherhood that I saved from extinction, the Thieves Guild who profit immensely from my rule, the College of Winterhold that I was put in direct control of, the people of Skyrim who I now rule through fear as their rightful High King for eternity, and the full armies of the Stormcloaks and Empire in undead form, I now stand poised to take over the entire world. As the armies of both sides fall, I can simply add them to my ranks of the undead, further multiplying my army, and growing my power. If the situation requires it, I can personally lead the assault to launch magical nuke after nuke until my enemies submit to my will, with absolutely no risk to myself, for I cannot die. Once I'm done conquering Tamriel, I shall turn my gaze to Akavir, and to all other corners of Nirn until I've taken over the entire world. I do not care how many hundreds or thousands or millions or billions of people try to stop me. Ultimately, once a new Shezzarine inevitably rises up to challenge me, I shall trap their soul into a new Mantella, and use it to ascend to divinity, as Mannimarco once did, spitting in the face of the Divines, the Daedra, and Lorkhan all. It is the ultimate victory over the Aurubis itself that I seek.
    All for the low, low price of my humanity.
    (Lol, it sure is a good thing the next Elder Scrolls games all take place in similar yet different timelines from your actual playthrough, because Tamriel in the timeline I made with that playthrough is totally fucked! It's a shame that character can never come back to be a supervillain for my future characters to defeat xD)

    I had once made an Imperial Lich character named Zagreus who chose to become a Lich because he wanted to live long enough and amass enough power so that he can use his immense power and knowledge to ensure that the races of man had a future, combatting against anything and anyone that would wish to either destroy the world or subjugate mortalkind to their will, whether it be Daedric Prince, dragon, or Thalmor inquisitors. All in all, he wanted to protect the world and its people, even if he must sacrifice his humanity and even a portion of his morality to do so.
    Zagreus chose to be a Lich instead of a vampire because he knew that if he was killed in the midst of battle or assassinated, then his body would reconstitute and he would be able to try again. But as a vampire, not only would he have more debilitating weaknesses, but Zagreus loathed the idea of giving up his soul to an otherworldly force that he didn't trust and only saw mortalkind as playthings. It was his soul, he would decide what to do with it.

    - You get to continually grow more powerful
    - You get to shape history in the Elder Scrolls universe
    - You can actually spend eternity (assumingly) as a hero or villian.
    - Very likely you won't fall victim to a Daedric prince or something, as you will need little.
    - Big world crisis stuff will be less "bad" for you overall.
    - You'll likely become a legend in the lore somehow.
    Seems worth it to me. The afterlife is too random for anyone but the average citizen. You can get your soul stolen, accidently associate with Daedra, become a Werewolf, a Vampire, etc. So many ways to screw your afterlife, and then you'll live eternally in a realm of a Daedra or worst. Better to spend eternity getting powerful to buy time to figure things out.

In exchange, they could pass onto you the knowledge of the outside world through books or pamphlets or word-of-mouth. You would be a sort of eternal, unorthodox grandmaster of magic and the dark arts. The only thing I could possibly think of to do as a Lich would be to make your own kingdom either by raising it from scratch or simply stealing it from another. As a Lich your magical abilities are paramount and far greater than that of most if given proper time to learn, thus it would be easy to take over given that alone. The only thing a Lich would need is to be able to please and sway the people which again, can be done magically. At the end of the day, if the people are happy who would care what their ruler looks like?

    It could be argued that most of the supposed Liches aren't actually Liches. The dragon priests are more or less mummies locked away and needing to be preserved. Mannimarko sounds like more of a leech than a lich considering he seems to absorb and maintain his power not by sucking on souls but by absorbing power from artifacts perhaps that's why he looks normal. The Ancient elves could definitely be Liches as well as those cursed to be intelligent undead. The Underking is a good example of an elder scrolls Lich.

    Revisiting Skyrim through Skyrim VR at the moment. My current main is a High Elf who I envision as a Lich. First he did the Mage's college questline to obtain more power. He began taking an interest in communing with Daedra and conjuration, and eventually became Archmage of the college. Then, hungry for even more power, he sought to conquer death by embracing Vamprism and completing the Dawnguard questline. I think next on the list is Dragonborn content where he can make further deals with Daedra and learn more summoning spells. I am enjoying playing a more behind-the-scenes puppet master role, manipulating people to murder one another or summoning small armies to defeat my enemies. I know games like Skyrim are more typically associated with the hands-on adventurer archetype but this play style also feels very contextual as I find myself at the center of major events, often pulling strings to fit my agenda. It would be awesome to see one day some sort of technology that allowed for future TES games to adapt previous save files from other titles; for example in a future game I might encounter my Lich character in a dungeon and have to defeat him.

    Misconceptions of a Lich:
    - You have to forgo humanity - actually you don't. Whatever you were in life will remain with you even as a Lich, you'll just see yourself above everything else.
    - All Liches are Evil - no, it's only because it is considered evil that makes them evil to everyone and everything else. Much like Vampires and Werewolves, not all are evil.
    - Power for the sake of more power - really it is Immortality, but for most it is the desire to achieve more. More knowledge, discoveries, unlocking mysteries, and making yourself more of a legend.
    Yes, you will look like a corpse, literally forever.
    Yes, you'll be regarded as a monster (but not much different from a vampire or werewolf, they too are monsters).
    The biggest possible drawback of being a Lich:
    Your phylactery is the only thing keeping you from literal oblivion, not the plane/domain of the deadric realm, but I mean soul death.
    If that is destroyed, so too is your very soul. Even Vampires and Werewolves can look forward to an afterlife, but Lich will NEVER see that afterlife.
    They will simply cease to exist.
    Vampirism and Lycanthropy are just curses, once you die as either, you go to the plane of Oblivion, but you can still be cured of either and possibly redeem yourself.
    Once you become a Lich, there is no going back. Besides to become a Lich requires you to die and bring yourself back. So in that sense, you are already dead.
    Once you die, really die, it is permanent. Not even a Daedric Prince can bring you back, you are THAT dead.
    So it really depends on whether you're willing to take that kind of gamble and if it fits your goals.
    If you want a chance to be with an Aedra or Daedra, then Lichdom really isn't for you.

    The way I see it, Mannimarco achieved lichdom using techniques opposite of others.
    Every other person (in the lore) achieved lichdom through hasty methods. In one ritual, they (essentially) use an alterted soul trap method on themselves, making themselves simply undead.
    Mannimarco didn't do this.
    He slowly and methodically achieved lichdom by altering his living body, piece by piece over a long period of time, essentially killing his mortal body but simultaneously putting it in a (sort of) suspended state.
    Basically, he achieved a pure form of lichdom. He is immortal but not living.
    A sort of demi-god, impervious to normal methods of killing and immune to decay.
    That's probably why he has the title of, "the first lich" as what he achieved is actually what Necromancers aspire to become. He is a "proper" or "true" lich.
    The common lich you encounter is an imperfect, botched version of the desired outcome.
    That said, it is also worth noting that this is Mannimarco from one timeline.
    There are apparently three versions of him in the Elder Scrolls universe from three different timelines (due to the dragonbreak);
    One where he achieved, his lichdom,
    another where he was defeated and killed and finally, one where he went above and beyond lichdom and became a god.

    For me beign a Lich is super worth it, a lot more than beign a vampire or a werewolf.
    You have immortality, incredible magic powers, you can resurrect, you can literally become a walking god because of how powerful you can become and you have to remember that your soul is not bound to any daedric prince or god, Lichdom is the form of immortality that mortal created for themselves and is far more powerful than that created by a divine beign.
    The drawbacks are that you are a soulless rotten corpse beign kept "alive" by dark magic since your soul is in the phylactery, the mind can become corrupted by a weak mind most of the time can't even start the ritual and only strong ones should become liches, also by beign a corpse you will stench of dead and your appearance will make it impossible to live in society and if your phylactery gets destroyed you will die instantly.
    All the drawbacks can be countered, the mind corruption can easily be countered if you have dedication and powerful magic abilities, just look at the dragon priests, with illusion and alteration magic (not even advanced ones) you can cover your smell and your appearance while living in society, Mannimarco probably did too, that is why his body isn't rotten.
    The final drawback, the fact that if the philactery gets destroyed you will die, can be countered by creating the phylactery with a really hard material (dragon bones, stalhrim, etc...) and by hiding it, shouldn't be hard since Tamriel has very hidden places, for example you can create a small crypt in the depths of the Nirn and use illusion and alteration magic to perfectly hide it, you can also protect the crypt with a magic aura and by resurrecting powerful beigns as undead guards.
    If you want even extra protection you can create an unbreakable barrier which only you can enter freely, while for other beigns it requires them to have some sort of key that is hidden in the crypt itself, making it impossible to enter or destroy the crypt even for a daedric prince, if you want even more protection you create a pocket dimension and move the crypt there.
    With these methods (totally possible for a beign who has to power to become immortal) no one will be abl to destroy your phylactery, you will become invincible, you will be able to live in the society and you will gain unlimited influence, life and power.

    Past the actual process of becoming a lich, I would probably just improve my state to the point of there being no penalty. Illusion magic could be used at first to simply cover your decaying body, but with enough time, you could eventually use Restoration, Alteration or some combination of the two and actually restore yourself to a more lifelike form. Healing the undead is already possible and with the immortality you would have plenty of time to completely reverse decay and eventually you would just be immortal, resistant to all magic, especially frost, very hard to harm with weapons, and generally powerful in magic terms because you would need to be in order to be a lich at all. From that point, you could first perfect your body, returning to a preferable status. Then you could study several combat styles and become a very skilled fighter to make most physical combat very easy. After that, it would be time to improve you magic abilities and knowledge to ridiculous levels and then you could go on from there and learn many other skills, anything you may eventually use. Due to the limitless time and the usefulness of magic, you would effectively be able to become the ultimate being and at that point, doing whatever you want would be completely plausible, as almost nothing short of a Daedric Prince could challenge you. And they can be beaten, so you might just have the power to control the whole of Nirn. If the process of turning into a lich is doable for you, then it would be worth it eventually.

      @@shadowstrider5033 You could, but a lich is a lot harder to fight and if you manage to restore you body enough you probably could do the more personal things, as one might say, but it would take a lot longer to make it possible. It might be less fun though if you can't perfectly preserve a proper body so... TRADEOFFS!

    If you are a human that has a plan that will take longer than your life to start yes.
    My answer is simply yes, less weaknesses than a vampire, and stronger all around besides you can socialize however you would have to magical disguise everything. If a Lich does go through the effect of disguising themselves magical they do run the risk of being discovered by a good enough mage. It's all in the scheming and planning
    Besides in DND (Dungeons and dragons) they have a lich that builds death trap dungeons and makes God's out of Eldritch horrors however that only scratches the surface on him in particular.

    Just gave me an idea, an elder Scrolls game that starts with you waking up in the middle of a ceremony turning the player into a lich, the room is burst into and some adventures kill everyone including you but take the item with your soul in. You wake up again, weeks later everyone dead and your first task is to hunt down your item before it becomes noticeable that you're a rotting corpse. Once you have it, you have the choice of ending the game there or adventuring trying to get back your memories all while avoiding people noticing you're dead. You can learn heal undead spells that'll stave off the smell and maybe keep passers by from noticing but if anyone gets too close or if you're not careful you'll be noticed maybe some new necromancer spells are added to keep you looking fresh or some spells to give you a glamour but ultimately it's a game of time.

    If you become a lich, you could be an immortal hero to the people of tamriel. Take prisoners that are on death rom from the Imperial city along with other necromancers that are given test subjects. They're all villains that were sentenced to death, so you don't have to worry about much of a morality choice, also. You can atone for any other misdeeds you've done once you finally ARE a lich.

    I think being a Lich more appeals to those with a vendetta or grudge, or who reach a point where their own fate isn't as important as undoing someone you hate's legacy forever. The Wolf Queen pretty much seems to have become a lich due to this.

    I think I would definitely become a lich and as for the inability to blend into society all you really need to do is be a master illusionist and just use illusion spells to make yourself look normal, plus there’s the added benefit of you be able to reconstitute yourself if your physical form is destroyed and another good thing about it is that you don’t owe your souls to any daedra, while as a vampire if you die you go straight to cold harbor and get tortured for eternity
