    Make sure you spray the cable & mechanism with rust spray annually. You don't want to become a GM truck of the 80's & 90's (broken cables = lost spare tires)

    Your logic is sound and every little thing you do cumulatively adds up to a much bigger weight savings, safety rating or peace of mind. Since I have a small trailer with 14" wheels with a bumper mounted spare, the weight savings may not be worthwhile. Great video!

    Hey JD I added a little more piece of mind to mine on my DRV by adding a piece of all thread rod thru one of the lug holes and a washer and wing nut to hold it securely in place. Works great it use to get slack a little on cable before now stays tight all the time. Love your channel keep the videos coming.

    That spare rim looked more like a tractor wheel. Make sure you take that spare out once in awhile and clean that aluminum. Any chemicals used on roads will ruin it. Maybe put a tire cover on it to help protect it. Just a suggestion.

    Discount Tire must be getting soft. I worked there for four years and did all kinds of duallies, box trucks, boat trailers, motor homes, etc. I wish we didn’t though duallies took a lot of physical work. I agree though their service is awesome and an awesome company. I wouldn’t buy tires anywhere else.

    I have a 2019 Open Range 20FBS dual axle travel trailer , the first thing i did was ditch the Ranier (made in China) tires and replace them with four Goodyear Endurance tires and next was to remove the factory equalizers and shackles and install Dexter E-Z flex shackles and equalizers , i get what you say when it gives you peace of mind ...nice video , happy travels and come and visit the beautiful scenery we have in Canada !

    just think of the spare wheel mounting on most travel trailers, ie those brackets clamped around those flimsy bumpers!
    i lost a spare wheel and tire years ago off a pickup truck with a similar cable system. didn't even realise it was gone until my next oil change. the wheel and tire i believe is somewhere on a backroad in northern new brunswick, canada!

      @BigTruckBigRV  3 роки тому +1

      Agreed, however, it's what's available from LCI. There are other options but not guarantee they are any stronger. Most RV spare tire combinations generally run around 60lbs, so this may be the reason.

  • @stacyreid5077
    @stacyreid5077 3 роки тому

    Now that you’ve trimmed 30-35lbs off the spare tire here’s a lil something else you might like tie a piece of paracord with a handle to the spare tire so you can pull the spare out from underneath the RV while not being bent over in an awkward position. Run the paracord long enough to reach the side of the RV an mount it using some double stick tape or a small piece of plastic hose split so the cord can be pulled out from in it

    Wheel and tire weight are surprisingly high on many vehicles. A lot of times a wheel and tire “upgrade” can end up adding 100 to 200 pounds or more of weight to your rig. The reason you see a lot of semi trucks running around with aluminum wheels or aluminum wheels with supper singles is not to look pretty, but for weight reduction purposes. When you spread that change over 18 to 26 wheels and tires, that is a significant amount of weight. And a gain in payload capacity for additional payload revenue.

    Missed this one last summer, but wanted to point out that the vast majority of pickup trucks built in the last 25 years or so have had the spare tire held-on the exact same way as this. Aside from the security issue (easily solved with a cable lock), they are very reliable and seldom fail.

  • @highpro1394
    @highpro1394 3 роки тому +2

    Why not just get rid of it hanging underneath all together and mount 2 full spares to the back bumper instead. Easy to get to and you dont have to worry about the cable anymore that hangs low.

    • @BigTruckBigRV
      @BigTruckBigRV  3 роки тому +3

      Bumper also has a 150lb rating. Plus significantly more leverage at the back. I'll likely just reinforce the setup by adding a strap.

    Great upgrade J.D. Your right about the peace of mind. J.D., Are you aware of any mods that prevent the spare tire from lowering on its own. Twice, when I have done my walk-around during a rest stop, I have noticed that my spare has dropped several inches. I know i have seen a video where someone else talked about this and had a mod to prevent this from happening, but I cannot find that video. Any ideas? Thanks and keep the videos coming.

    I think you were having a bad day, first, lowering the spare and repeatedly using the word "retracting" to describe the process, then saying that you are "sure" that Discount Tire will do 17.5 wheels, but you are "not certain"....... There is a spare tire hoist that has a chain rather than a cable and I understand it is less prone to jamming and corrosion, but in any case, you need to drop the spare once a year, fully extend the cable to clean it, lube the hoist and clean the tire of road debris that accumulates in the rim. On the spare on my RAM truck I have a ratchet strap across the spare to insure it doesn't depart the truck. Removed the factory steel wheels off my RAM 2500 and installed factory alloy wheels and shaved 17 lbs per wheel from the vehicle, noticeable difference in wheel bounce over potholes, etc.

  • @richardmain8059

    I like how you think outside the box with the modifications added. I was thinking a heavy duty waterproof drawstring bag might be a addition to keep the spare tire clean. Also your friends who make plastic parts might be able to design a spare tire tray to take the place of your tub lid. 😀👍👍👍

    I would suggest putting a spare tire cable lock on the spare hooking it around the angle iron braces. At least if it did break, the locking cable would keep it from falling on the road. Tumbling a tire and wheel that size under your rv would not be good.

      Just having the camper is a lot of expense. Weight does matter. I think we all have a responsibility to maintain safety when it comes to towing these units on the roads. I spent a lot of money to put hydraulic disc brakes on my 5th Wheel. I did it because I felt the electric brakes were inadequate. I just purchased a Shibumi at $250 (weighs less than 4 lbs) to eliminate the weight of 3-4 large beach Umbrellas and it provides more shade.
