The problem is that far too many "RPGs" aren't actually Roleplaying games and don't facilitate roleplaying drive because they don't provide several choices with consequences.
I fear Daggerfall might be this type of game cuz I tried Elder Scrolls Arena and hated it so much 😔😢😭

      @@danielsurvivor1372Daggerfall is a very good life-sim style
roleplaying game with a focus on dungeon crawling via flavor text quests.
Arena is a straight up 90s dungeon crawler, the other elder scrolls games refined the dungeon crawling formula, but it’s what they are at the end of the day.

Amen! I suspect that this renewed appeal of these older role-playing games is due in part to the world itself getting crazier, making it harder and harder to even get by. People are resonating more with the IRL struggles that these classic games simulate so well.

Loving the Daggerfall content. The fact that roleplaying has taken a backseat for most modern RPG gamers (and developers) is more than a bit sad. A voice like yours is necessary, and this is the perfect game for it, keep it up.

I feel like daggerfall as a style of game would be really popular if made again today. basically a hybrid handbuilt and generated world of immense scale with a heavy focus or roleplaying. you don't even need the most amazing graphics but just good enough to be clear and easy to understand.

Agreed - I think about this a lot.
There's no need for high resolution textures if it means there's more actual content to engage with.
Saving that space, the UESP says Daggerfall has 41 continental regions and 3 island regions. Not that having that many regions is necessary... but imagine if there was basically an automated game of RISK going on, almost entirely a background process, just to simulate war, and that conflict would play out different every time you start a new game... I mean, it's just procedural RNG with a handful of roll tables.

I'm not very deep into the video yet, but something that really needs to be say is how roleplaying isn't just fun, but is almost a necessity to really get into playing certain types of characters.
Like, in character creation guides and stuff like that, people often talk about how pickpocketing and lockpicking and stuff are miserable to level up since you only ever get one try per door, so it's "so slow"... but near the end of my most recent DGU binge, I decided to make a thief on-the-side and really tried to get into that "thief-y" mindset, and that's when those skills really started to click. Because they really *aren't* all that slow to level up, if you're playing the right way.
Like, if you're a thief or assassin, you prolly shouldn't play the game the same way you'd play an "everyday" citizen. You're a stealthy sort! Get out and stalk the rooftops at night, ply your trade when there aren't any guards to beat the shit out of you over it. Once 6pm hits and all the NPCs despawn, you're free to run around town and lockpick all the doors without consequence, and that makes it a lot easier to build those skills up.

    • @micah_raygun_
      @micah_raygun_  8 місяців тому +19

Regarding your point about others saying pickpocketing/lockpicking being a pain to level up, I think this is a symptom of my main gripe with a lot of Daggerfall content I see out there.
It's like we're encouraged to make a very streamlined type of character that will produce the same experience across all players. You're either a mage or a battle mage, nothing else works. it's such a shame considering the huge array of gameplay options presented by blending mage, warrior, and thief archetypes, and that's not to mention the language skills.
Anyway, point is we shouldn't actively strive for a homogenized experience. If that's what role playing games were for I'd just watch Let's Plays instead of playing the game. Part of the fun is expressing yourself via character creation and roleplay, and Daggerfall gives you sooooo many options for this

I've started playthroughs of daggerfall a bunch of times in the past and never got far, but this most recent time i started a modded playthrough and im more than halfway through the main story now. Two mods in particular, roleplay realism, and calories and climate, have made a huge impact on making the game way more immersive and interesting for me. It can be a little annoying at times to have to worry about having enough food, not freezing to death, and getting enough quality sleep in a real bed, but those minor annoyances make your game feel so much more real and satisfying.

Daggerfall is my favorite game of all time and the mods for it make it even better. I really try to go for a fantasy life sim and I do try to make it harder for myself through roleplaying.
My favorite character is a High Elf Necromancer. It requires a few mods to make it work but the character is meant to focus nearly entirely on magic and summons. Massively increased spell points but very weak to all kinds of magic and can't regen spell points (and phobia of animals to make lower levels even harder). The mage's guild does refill your magicka for free but that doesn't help a whole lot when you're stuck in a dungeon for a few hours. Staves are a minor skill but that's mostly for the enchanting bonuses. I have all starting stats reduced by ten so late game feels much more different from early game and I'd add inability to use plate armor but then that'd make leveling easier + their strength is already so low that plate armor is a massive burden anyway.
It feels great having to be strategic and creative with magic usage. Almost nobody likes Necromancy either so you have to be wary of getting caught with skeletons and even then most people hate you.

Listening to other peoples perspectives on games that I am so very fond of is such a great pleasure, only I wish that I could join in to ask questions and such! Thank you sincerely for providing more Daggerfall discussion, I listen while I work sometimes and it is something I try not to take for granted as there really isn't very much interesting or significant Daggerfall discussion to be found on UA-cam outside of Zaric's older videos or Indigo's various Elder Scrolls content. As far as I'm aware of there doesn't seem to be any retrospective analyses for it that are comparable to those which have been created for Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim. And for me the only games that are worth exploring to that extent are Daggerfall, Morrowind and Battlespire, the games that set the tone and established the visionary lore that made it distinct from other fantasy series. Arena is a fantastic game but doesn't contain nearly as much unique material as those three.

@@micah_raygun_ Thank you very much for the recommendation! I'm not familiar with that channel so I'll be sure to check it out. Unfortunately for me, I tend to live like a hermit and haven't acclimated to the more modern forms of internet interaction like Discord or Twitch, etc. I have used the chat option on a few streams but otherwise I don't much interact with anybody beyond the UA-cam comment sections. I've been passionate about this and other games since the mid 90s yet I can count the amount of people I've met in person with whom I could discuss them at any level on less than one hand. I wish I were more inclined to involve myself socially even just online but it just doesn't come naturally to me. Outside of my children and a single friend around my age who is into these games, I pretty much keep to myself.
Anyway, my apologies for feeling sorry for myself on your video comments haha, I just can't express how much I appreciate people taking the time to share their thoughts on such incredible games like Daggerfall. With video creators like you, and mod authors, a community exists that really enhances the experience of playing the games by lending it a communal dimension wherein matters like lore are effectively signified and made relatively substantial. I could absolutely contribute to the public conversation about this and other game series, at and in some instances even beyond the level to which they currently are, especially so regarding the development history, the cultural (artistic, musical, literary etc) influences, obscure mechanics and systems, in-game lore, and so forth. To the point that I've entertained the idea of making videos myself, were it not for my profound discomfort with any sort of public presentation. I really admire people like yourself who can overcome those obstacles and share their passions so publicly.

@@micah_raygun_ Well I for one commend you the effort; you already know how much I at least (and I'm sure many others) appreciate your videos. Your talking about your wife patiently entertaining your adventures is also very familiar! My wife is a gamer, and I would even go so far as to say that CRPGs are her favorite kind of games though she would probably be adamant that she doesn't have a favorite (she's a Pisces and I'm a Cancer, that should clarify the perspective difference haha) but she tends to play newer games, for instance she played Cyberpunk 2077, got very deep into Final Fantasy XIV, had like 300 hours into Baldur's Gate 3 within the first month of release, etc. She is only a year younger than I am but she is always active on Discord, has a bunch of international friends she talks to and games with, where I put together a computer that was by far the most expensive non-essential thing I've ever treated myself to and 90% of my time on it is with games released prior to 2005. I actually have a Discord account but I rarely ever go on it, I don't know I guess I've become stuck in outdated modes of interacting and have difficulty embracing the emerging replacements. I'm 38 so I don't think I'm "old" lol but I sometimes feel that way. My two kids are gamers too but for them it is more of a side activity, only occasionally do they become enraptured by a game and even then it only tends to last a week or two on average. My son who is 18 actually has played Morrowind, the original Fallout, and loves the old Neo Geo 2D fighting games which is another gaming realm I'm passionate about, but he is mostly into music and doesn't get into games often at all.
But yea I hear you on the preponderance of Daggerfall content that I fundamentally disagree with, and it is why I am so enthusiastic about your videos. Seeing you leave certain options unticked in the Unity launcher interface, restricting the rules and parameters to more closely match the intent of the original design, and your mod choices for the most part are very similar to my own preferences. First and foremost for me are the graphics; I refuse to use any graphics mods or options (other than lowering the dungeon lightning) that "enhance" the visuals. To me, the original DOS version was perfect as it was and I only wish Unity could proprely replicate it; the way the snow falls as your turn the camera, the way the distant windows and buildings turn sort of pink as you pan around, the weird pixelated shadows on ceilings and corner walls in dungeons, etc. I use mods like expanded daggerfall textures, familiar faces of the Iliac Bay, and so forth because they retain the original stylistic vision and blend perfectly into the base games assets, while for options I use retro mode with the resolution at 320x200 set at 4:3 (which with the recent Retro-Frame mod is GLORIOUS), and depending on if I'm using the recent pixelated version of Dynamic Skies or the vanilla backdrop I switch between palletization and posterization sans sky. And that is it! It isn't really ideal because as I understand it the entire rendering apparatus between Unity and the DOS game are very different so that it is very difficult to truly replicate it, but it as close as I've been able to approximate. I mainly play on Steam Deck and I actually keep my heavily modded Unity installed along with the original game (not Steam's, I replace the target in the launcher to load the most recent patched version available on the uesp wiki).
So I've gone on to talk at great length again, I apologize if my messages are a chore to read, the Cancer in me overpowering my reason lol. I just am grateful to get to talk with another fan, I suppose I really ought to try and make more of an effort to use Discord more often, I have joined several cool groups like Zaric's group, Indio Gamer's, dfortae's, and others, and I see all kinds of conversations that are totally my thing, I just struggle to join in without feeling like I'm interrupting, which probably just reveals my profound lack of understanding the dynamics of online discussions. Coming up on old forums sort of conditioned me that way, I guess. Thank you for taking the time to read and respond to my ravings though, you made my day more than once!

Yeah I don't want to speak ill of other UA-camrs, but there's not a lot of Daggerfall content that is up my alley. It's weird, you'd think there would be more overlap in the fandom's play style but I guess Elder Scrolls fans are a huge community with a lot of diversity.

I've played Daggerfall periodically for 26 years and own the Prima Guide and I learned more about Daggerfall in this video than all those years of putzing around with it. Glad you enjoyed it! The hard part about trying to write an introduction to the game's mechanics is just how huge the game is. I feel like I barely scratched the surface, but hopefully this gives new players enough info to start playing the game and figuring out other details through the course of the adventure.

I put it this way to my grandson: if you want a super challenging game that is very deep and fun, check out a FREE Elderscrolls game. He went back to play Roblox... I had another question for you: I see that you don't really have graphics mods that DFU gives us access to. In all honesty I hate modding games. I love playing vanilla if at all possible. However for Daggerfall, I modded it to look a bit better, smoother. Are you not using graphics mods by choice?

@@Retired_Geek_Woman I'm a fan of the pixel graphics, but more importantly my choice to stick with original-ish graphics is my love for Travel Options and Basic Roads.
My computer isn't cutting edge, so improving the graphics causes issues with fast tracel. staggering frame drops, no clipping through the ground, etc. Basically I'd rather be able to travel over the map at 30-60x speed reliably than have those graphical updates.

Seriously tho, this is a wonderful video. Thank you for talking about suboptimal builds in RPGs - sometimes working around your disadvantages makes for more engaging tactical gameplay than knowing you’re gonna steamroll everything in your path! Not knocking on folks who love min maxing of course, but sometimes picking the ebony dagger every time feels a lil boring.

I just recently started geting into Daggerfall, and your video helps clear up some of the questions I had about things work. I'm playing on the android version of Daggerfall Unity, but I'm thinking about checking it out on PC. I made my first character by considering what kind of personality I wanted the character to have instead of building the character to be good at the game. Daggerfall is a good sandbox for roleplaying as your character, and that includes self-imposed limitations such as a character being reluctant to steal. I still have a lot to figure out about the game, but the fun is going to be figuring out how my character will approach situations he comes across.

And here you are over here laughing all the way home, skipping over X, wheedling past Y, and making Z your major skills. The like. Yes, a lot of the advice in those is applicable... to OG Daggerfall, due to jank. But here, not so necessary, methinks.

On the technical side, you mention that agility is not too useful and what you say makes sense. However, agility is the governing attribute for longblades. If one is using longblade or missile weapons, should one have a high starting agility? Or is it still not too useful?

Class advantages: x3 int in spell points
Take a look at the schools of magic and their associated spells at uesp.net, as they're not really consistent with what you've seen in later games.
Mysticism is great for mark/recall and numerous other utility spells.
Restoration is great for healing and spells like Orc Strength, Feet of Notorgo, etc.
      Thaumaturgy has levitation iirc.
You have access to the Spell Maker as soon as you join the Mages Guild, so poke around there and experiment to learn more about the spell effects.
One last consideration--magic items don't recharge. You can check durability of a magic item in your inventory, but you should generally be mindful when using a magic item as it will break. You have an option in DFU settings to enable magic item repair.

I get what you mean by wanting to "play sub-optimally" to an extent. In that if you want to play a character that isn't the best possible option, why should you force yourself to play anything else? At the same time If you are going to play a character, I feel like you wanna make sure they are going to be really strong in the fields that make the most sense for them.
Then again I tend to do stuff to my builds to make them weaker at times, but that's cause 90% of the time I am playing some flavor of Priest/Crusader, which is busted as all hell in Daggerfall to the point it can trivialize some content. I gave a Crusader I made a Phobia for human enemies to simulate him not liking to have to kill people for instance. That being said If I where playing almost anything else I'd be really carefull to try and construct something really potent to minimize the frustration factor.
Also for the curious, Barbarian get's up to 25HP per level, however this is a vast outlier, with other Martial classes having between 14-20HP, Rogues, & Hybrid Casters sitting around 8-12 HP, & pure caster's (Except Healers who have 8) sitting at 6 HP. Knowing this will help you put your character roughly where they need to be. Though to note some classes notably the Acrobat & Spellsword really should have higher HP than they do.

    • @micah_raygun_

@@micah_raygun_ Np, Though I'd note you'd be suprised how tanky having a touch of health can make you. Sense you really like the Acrobat class, i'd note It only gets like 8HP a level, which is really low for what really looks like it's meant to be a Rogue class (For context it's closest cousins the Rogue & Monk get 12 & 14 HP respectively) that Crusader I made, I gave like 12 HP a level, (Same as Spellsword, though I did not limit my armor, which I ended up regretting, as along with Restro, & Alteration I ended up so tanky I got pretty bored) so it might be that you and your favored playstyle lean towards enjoying the thrill of a lower HP pool, making this a buyer beware style situation. Still I'd advise if your going to forgo Restro for Medicine, or no healing skill, go with slightly higher health, if you want to use Restro or Restro & Medicine (Like I often do, as again, I like playing Priests) go with lower health, so they don't make the game feel too easy.
