At the time when our Dad was in his late 90’s and 100, friends would ask him this question. His reply was often… Well I’m still kicking. I’m just not kicking up much dust! 😁 He was a Pilot during WWII and had a lot of great stories for those wanting to take time to listen. He was a great Dad and loving husband for over 50 years. He’s greatly missed.

Something similar happens with me and my friends:
      Friend- "How are you"
      Me- "Yes"
Friend- "What do you mean yes?"
      Me- "I mean yes"
Friend- "But... Yes isn't a response to the question I asked"
      Me- "Why?"
      Friend- "Because... It's not..."
      Me- "You sure?"
      Friend- "Yes"
Me- "Now look who's saying yes! Well, well, well, see how the tables turn."
Friend- "Why are you like this *insert my name"
Me- "Hmm... Maybe cuz I was born..."
Friend- "Okay then... I'm just gonna slowly walk away"
Me- "Okay I'm gonna stay here and regret all of my life decisions."
Edit- I just added "friend" and "me" to the beginning of each sentence so it is less confusing.

    Im pretty well
    Im pretty fine
    Interesting answers:
    I've never been better
    So far so good
    Cant complain
    Better than i deserve
    Silly responses:
If i had a tail i would wag it
    Flirty responses:
Word on the street is that im pretty good
Im great, but a totally biased.
    'OK' alternatives:
    Im alright
    So so
    Not too bad
Could be better/ i could also be worse
    Same old, same old
    Im alive/surviving
    Good enough
    Sarcastic responses:
Im alright now, but there's still time for everything to go horribly wrong.
Better now that im talking to you.

Im not going to lie .....I feel terrible..
I'm not doing so well/I'm struggling a bit

Its been a bit of a tough week.
I'm not having an easy time at the moment.
    Avoiding question:
    You don't want to know!
    Don't ask!
    Honestly just don't ask me
Do i have to answer that?
    I think you already know.
Shhh.. it's too early to tell.
    Ill responses:
Im feeling a bit under the weather.
    Overworked and underpaid.
Slowly but surely dying actually, aren't we all?
    Funny and negative responses:
    Somewhere between blah and me.
Just hug me and leave it at that.

I have a Portuguese friend who would ask me “how are you” every time he starts a conversation. Kills me every time to come up with a different answer. This vid is such a lifesaver lol

Tim Webb but shouldn’t you answer first before raising another question? And if I try to avoid answering it he would say “I asked you a question: how are you?” So he really expects an answer 😂

Have lived in California for a while. Some of the common responses are:
    Hangin’ in there,
Takin’ it one day at a time,
    Chilling,
    Dandy,
    Taking it easy,
    Not too shabby,
    Livin’ large,
sup (What’s up): A single word response that avoids answering the question and throws it back at the other person.
Whazzaaaaa! (What’s up) with tongue lolling out and a bottle of beer in one hand.

I grew up in Georgia, USA. We sometimes say things like "I'm finer than a frog's hair." or "If I were any better I'd be twins." The latter is funny to me, because I AM a twin. If I'm so-so, I might say, "fair to partly cloudy." or "Fair to midlin'." If I'm physically ill, I might say "I'm sicker than a dog; I know, because I have a dog, and she's doing pretty well." OR if I'm VERY sick, "I'd have to get better to die."

I know and love all of those rural American phrases. My favourite of the ones you cited is "If I were any better I'd be twins" -- it really cracks me up. Another one i have always enjoyed is "Partly cloudy with a chance of rain." One old farmer i knew said, totally deadpan, "I'll feel better after you buy me a beer."
