Hello, Annemarie! IT'S AWESOME!!! There are so many questions and responses for each and every situation. The big problem is to memorize them all for these especific moments. Anyway, THANKS A LOT !!!
Hi Armando, I recommend just choosing 2-3 questions that you like and can use regularly. Focus on learning those and adding them to your daily vocabulary. Once you've fully learned them, then add 2-3 new ones. Take it step-by-step.
How are you 1. How's it going? 2. What's up? 3. What have you been up to? 4. What's going on? 7. How you been? 8. What's new? 9. Every thing good? 10. How's things? 11. How are you holding up? 12. How are you feeling? 13. How are you doing? 14. How is working going? 16. How have you been? 17. What have you been working? Thank you very much
My mother language is Spanish and I have good English. However, having gone to graduate school in the States improved my English there are aspects I forget or never care too much about. These 20 ways of greetings are one of those factors that in real life can be confusing, for instance, your boss comes to you say, good afternoon, how is everything? I really can't say hey how are you doing? I should have responded, great, thank you, and leave it like that. Your video is one of the best I've seen on this topic and has cleared up a lot of questions. Thank you very much.
How are you? Casual How's it going? What's up or sup? not much, nothing much, not a whole lot What are you up to? I'm working, I am watching a movie What've you been up to? I've been getting started on a new project What's going on? What's been going on? How have you been/how ya been? Good, I've been good, everything's fine what's new? I just started a new job, we're getting ready to move, not a lot. Everything good? Yes, everything is fine. How's things? How are you holding up? (after something tragic or difficult has happened) How are you feeling? (a difficult situation, sick, nervous) Professional How are you doing? I am fine, everything is good. How is ..... going? (work, project) How are things at/with ......? (very specific) How have you been? (no sound blending) Everything is good. What have you been working on? When you haven't seen someone in a long time I haven't seen you for ages! How have you been? It's been way too long since I've seen you. What have you been up to? I remember the last time I saw you, you had just ..... How's that going? If someone asks twice or asks specific questions, then they really want to know what's going on.
The, "Asking a second time" tip is very important especially in the Southern US, for it is an extension of other polite ways of signaling to the other person you really care/are in a stable position, etc.. For example, in the Southern US, if someone asked you if you wanted something to eat or drink and you said, "No, thank you," people would always ask, "Are you sure?" which is a signal for "please, I have enough to share, help yourself/take some. " According to Historian Ken Burns, this "2nd asking" rose up after the Civil War. Most people were poor during the 12 year occupation period, but still held to polite social rules & niceties, like the sharing of food when in the presence of others. However many were starving or close to it, so mothers re-taught their children to always say "No, thank you," at the first asking-- and only if a 2nd asking occurred, were they OK to except food /& hospitality from others. This was a way of signaling there was indeed "enough" to share and the sharing posed no burden to the person asking.
Hi Annemarie mam, Thanks for this lesson 😊 You are explaining very nicely, ” How are you? ” In different ways . * “How are you feeling?” I can ask this question if someone is not well . * “How are you holding up ?” I can ask this question if someone is in trouble.
