I met Jimmy Carr after a show on the day I passed my PhD viva. My wife mentioned it to him and he was really interested. Held up the autograph signing queue for a good chat about environmental toxicology (my topic)! A really nice guy.

I met Jimmy Carr after a show once in an autograph signing queue. Unfortunately there was some bloke with his Mrs holding everybody up, seriously they were there for ages and you could sense that the people behind them were getting annoyed, but Jimmy was smiling and being pleasant. Anyway, being nosey like I am, when I got to the front of the queue I couldn't resist asking him what the hold up was about. He said that the bloke was looking really smug and his Mrs mentioned that he'd just passed his PhD viva, and went on to bore him to death talking about Toxicology. Jimmy said he put up with it because his wife was so gorgeous to look at. The best bit though was when he handed his autographed book back to the bloke, as while he was admiring it Jimmy managed to write his phone number on the wife's copy to which she gave Jimmy a cheeky wink! A really nice guy.

If you watch his face closely, every time he pushes the boundaries his eyes are everywhere over the audience. He reads their reactions and adjusts his jokes accordingly. Bob Monkhouse was the same, his eyes used to dart around checking the audience every joke. Absolute masters of comedy.

I know someone who really disliked his humour and who made a point of approaching him after a gig in Ireland in the mid '00s and saying something like "You're just like Bob Monkhouse!" thinking it was an insult. Jimmy replied "Thanks very much!" You can tell he's heavily inspired by Bob's discipline of the craft

These jokes tend to come at the end of his shows. He's spent 2 hours softening his audience with fairly edgy stuff then just gets darker towards the end by which time he has taken the audience with him and they are almost willing him to offend them. Pure artistry.

There was just a presence about him. I think he found it a bit embarrassing. But I got the honor of serving his table and he's was great.

I think Jimmy is hysterical. Never heard a joke where I thought, “he’s gone too far”…ever. That’s mostly because I understand that he is a comedian; he’s telling jokes. They’re jokes. I’m a liberal, and I get it. I’m tired of cancel culture threatening people for practicing their craft. You don’t like it, don’t watch. I feel that’s pretty simple, easy to execute.

  • @Raven.flight
    @Raven.flight 3 роки тому +14

his humour is ‘left turn humour’. You’re going down the road to the destinations Jimmy Carr sets up and suddenly you take a left turn and you laugh because you didn’t see it coming (although you probably should have). It’s the unexpected. And half of it is funny because you KNOW it’s going to be crass, but you don’t know how he’s going to sell it.

Part of what Jimmy Carr does is what is called "Paraprosdokians" - where the final part of the sentence/joke changes how you interpret what came before. It's an interesting way to do shock humour as it's not making light of the subject matter, it's all about the gap with the audience expectations. I don't know if you could find a good Emo Phillips video, but that was very much his style and some of his material was similarly dark
"My schoolmates would make love to anything that moved, but I never saw any reason to limit myself."
I'll be honest, I prefer the likes of Ed Byrne and Dara O'Brien to Jimmy Carr, but I don't think their material does so well when edited down, a lot of Carr's stuff works as isolated clips

It is escapism and when you are at a comedy gig, it is like you have carte blanche to laugh at anyone and everyone being ripped to shreds. I have seen him live loads of times and he always tests the audience to see where the limit is. No show is the same though, not even on the same tour, which is why he is one of my favourite stand-ups. @@firpark4864 The great thing is, his material has stood up to the test of time. You look at a lot of comics from that time and you'll cringe at a lot of it, it hasn't aged well. Billy Connelly is certainly the exception.

There's one he told during a sit down with other comics on The Green Room with Paul Provenza. (Season 2, Episode 08). It was "The most offensive joke you've ever written". Holy crud.

Jimmy Carr is almost always that offensive, but I appreciate how he’s willing to be on the edge, constantly.
“8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown” is hilarious, and has introduced me to some great British comedians. Personal favs are James Acaster, Sarah Millikan, Joe Lycett, Jon Richardson, Joe Wilkinson and Sean Lock.
Greg Davies’ impression of boxer Chris Eubank is comedy gold, (but be sure to pair it with the follow-up episode)!

Just tossing out a few comedian names that are lesser known but hillarious (mostly these are going to be audio, because of them being lesser known):
Tim Willson - Southern humor at it's best (and some great original comedy songs Chucky Cheese Hell, Trailer Park Woman, First Baptist Bar & Grill)
Jerry Clower - REALLY Deep South Humor (one of the best story tellers around...great stuff).
Bob Newhart - Better known for his TV shows (and recently his appearances on Big Bang Theory) but his early comedy recordings are just masterful works of timing and dry humor.
