I can’t stop listening to this. Jon Batiste has hit a soul lifting level of heart, beauty and near musical perfection to my ears. So brilliant... a genius performance.
Well, I sobbed through the whole thing in a cathartic sort of way. The illnesses & losses, the grieving, the isolation, & I’m seriously fraying at the edges ~~ this tender song with lyrics that could never mean more tell me what I know but need to feel… I’m not alone. I needed this so much as I face my one year mark of eating every meal alone. A year with no human touch. Of watching 2 loved ones die via FaceTime. Thanks to Mr. Batiste for touching me with this loving, sensitive “hug.” It was so beautiful.
Someday soon we all will be together If the fates allow But until then, we'll have to muddle through Somehow Have yourself a merry little Christmas now
Fun fact: those were the original lyrics, recorded by Judy Garland during World War II. After the war, they were updated to make it more cheerful, but the Judy Garland version is more apropos than ever in 2020.
@Coronation Street Storyline Peter Susan coronavirus won't end in 2021, but we will have a President and an administraton that is serious about it. Hopefully we will have more people in the US that use the protections and means we have to in order to stop the spread here and in so many other places.
I have never been one to believe in angels, but if they ever do descend to Earth from heaven, they would be fittingly accompanied by the transcendently beautiful music Mr. Batiste.
I love the jazz sensibilities that he adds to simple songs like this. John is not some great singer but he is a real musician who knows how to use his voice and makes use of jazz chords. Colbert must pay him a fortune, but he is so lucky to have him on his show.
Sobbing my eyes out. Oh, how I miss... Mom and Dad, my guy, my friends who've passed before me, all the puppies who used to be by my side, ... the memories are so dear, and getting further away each year. To the young, to those who still see Christmas with hope and optimism - keep those memories close to your heart.
Understood, @chinookvalley. (I too am a weeping mess over here.) Hoping your happy memories will comfort you through this very hard season. All the best to you from a random Internet commenter who nonetheless wishes you well.
@Benjamin Hill: ”... a warm and comfy Christmas sweater ”. 🗣 Somewhat similar to the ” comfy ” style he was sporting... which most certainly complimented his ” tickling the ivories ” with that on-point musical rendition👌 Blessings... Back at you and yours. To Jon: Felice Navidad.‼️
@Deborah Davis and everybody... thank you so much for your heartwarming comments. It's been a Hell of a year. 🎄 Have a wonderful Christmas all! Love you 💜
I'm sorry Stevie, but I think you already know by now... John Batiste is the highlight of the show each and every night! Love and Peace! Hope for 2021!
In a saner world, there would be no way the late show would be able to afford having Jon Batiste as their band leader. In the mean time, we're all so lucky to be able to see him. Thanks Jon.
JB lives in a world of his own, and it's a privilege to be invited in from time to time. I'm old - and bitter and twisted - but this performance warmed my heart. Thank you.
Listening to this encouraged me so much. Like many people, I've been struggling this Christmas. The words and the soothing beauty of Jon's voice calmed my soul. Thank you.
Damn, Jon is an excellent musician in technical terms, bu he has got a feeling for music that hardly anyone can match. I always enjoy seeing him on the show.
Dude just had me burst into tears. Goodness that was beautiful. I wasn't ready. Stephen picking Jon Batiste as his bandleader may well be the best decision in the formation of the show. And bringing Evie to work.
If I could meet anyone it would be Jon Batiste. I’d love to sit at a piano with him and just soak in all I could learn. The sheer talent wrapped up in one human astounds me. And he has such a sunny and generous spirit, what a fantastic example of a wonderful person.
This man is a treasure. Unimpeachable kindness and honesty are a treasured asset to our troubled times. And what a majestic command of the ebonies and ivories this man has, including those sweetly sung notes!
Man, this is amazing. You can always tell the gift of a musician when they are doing renditions; When they are able to put their own spin on it but keep the spirit of the original. Beautiful.
Jon Batiste's sincerity and courage shine through once again! His honest treatment of this beloved standard -- the solo singer at his piano, a 21st-century Nat King Cole -- evokes a nostalgia all its own. It holds up musically and comes from a place of love and respect. The classic is only enhanced, not one-upped, by Jon's own brilliantly subtle, soulful touches. It takes both personal and musical courage to pull off such an understated performance, without any shortcuts or trite gimmicks. Thanks, Jon, we needed that! 💙❤️💚
Musical Art in its purest form. Just beautiful, and exactly what we need at this time. Well done! Thank you! Jon Batiste amazes me just how talented he is. Truly a musical artist second to no one. Steven Colbert, we love your show and we love Jon Batiste. Keep up the terrific work you are doing with your show.
Jon Batiste is the most glowing musician I know. Such joy This song is absolutely perfect for this time in saying Goodbye 2020 Hello possibilities and seeing our family and friends next year for sure. Merry Christmas Everyone. Everything that was sacred remains
Yes Yes Yes!! Bless this man's wonderful heart and talent! Jon you are SO special to The Late Show and its viewers, thank you for this!! Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas yourself!!
Mr Batiste, you've outdone yourself. I'm a fan of the older versions like Bing Crosby's but this was everything I could have wanted, with a special flair to make it all your own. Thank you and merry Christmas!!
Please.... ☮️🕊 Bring it Jon. Oh, the scales, the heart. Tickling those ivories like you do, beautiful. Thank you Jon, and very Merry Christmas to you Sir.
Thank you Stephen Colbert, your show kept me sane throughout our months of lockdown here in South Africa, many a time during Covid times it was the only thing to look forward to. And your wife's giggling in the wings was delightful and raised my spirits on many occasions🌻💞 A blessed & peaceful Christmas to you and your entire team, may God bless you abundantly☘🎉

Me too friend. Happy holidays!🎄💃
A FANTASTIC version. I loved how he weaved in gospel and jazz elements in his interpretation. He's got IT👍
I know, right? Genius! Happy holidays!🎄💃
Jazz and gospel influences make nearly everything better.
From now on whenever I see snow falling it’s gonna sound like John Baptiste playing that piano part at the end. Amazing!!
Exactly. I was reading comments so I wasn't looking at the video and when I heard that I thought this must be the sound of snow at xmas.
I like that ! me to That was so awesome! I love Jon!
I played this for my cat. He sat up, eyes and ears fixed on the performance. Bravo!
Mine slept on.

The "next year all your troubles will be miles away" line hit me hard just now.
The real lyrics are:

Jon, you remind me that we are all made of stardust.

Something about his grace and voice... angelic...
I love the jazz sensibilities that he adds to simple songs like this. John is not some great singer but he is a real musician who knows how to use his voice and makes use of jazz chords. Colbert must pay him a fortune, but he is so lucky to have him on his show.
What a beautiful rendition by Jon! Loved the high notes at the end mimicking icy falling snow...
Making me see the light at the end of the tunnel
This song couldn’t be more perfect for this hard year that we’ve had. John’s heart & love shines through in every note. Just perfect! ❤️
I love that he can hit that falsetto without going all obnoxious vibrato.
