- Waterfalls, black sand beaches, and film camera mishaps -
In this episode I photograph compositions on a windy Icelandic black sand beach, then explore a viking village replica film set before heading to a waterfall to shoot with my large format 4x5 camera and Horseman 6x12 film back.

I really liked that last one.
That exposure at 7:55 is incredible. It checks all the boxes: mood, great colors, nice motion blur in the water, and incredible contrast between all the elements. Great job putting that image together.
Thanks Larry, that was definitely one of my favorite moments of the day. I was pretty surprised when the mountain started catching light, and it made braving all the wind worth it!
Fantastic as always, the long exposure of the mountains was just incredible. The movement in the clouds added so much atmosphere. Great stuff. 👏👏
Thanks so much Chris!
Awesome video. The first black and white, and the last scene of the waterfall and valley, are incredible. Nothing like a solo road trip to a new place with a camera (or two). Chris, this series on Iceland is some of the best on UA-cam.
Thanks so much Jack, that's really kind! I definitely agree, and in retrospect the camper van road trip plan was a really great time, I'm looking forward to doing it again sometime!
I liked the time exposure with the mound of grass in front. The 1/3 second beach shot was also atmospheric. The backup exposure with three falls was very nice. The lower falls was also nice.
Thanks Dann, really happy you enjoyed them!
Great video. The shots are all amazing. Love the panoramic shots, not super wide but wide enough to give a unique perspective.
Thanks Dave! Agreed, I've been having a lot of fun with 1x2!
Beautiful images. Thank you for sharing. Don't fret too much about the double exposures: we all do that!
Haha stuff happens I suppose, thanks for the reassurance!
A wonderful video Chris! Can't wait to see Iceland for myself in the near future.
Thanks Wes, you'll absolutely love the place!
Chris, another brilliant episode. My Horseman 6x12 dark slide has red painted on one side, I added green to the other which indicates to me I am ready to shoot the next frame after advancing the film winder once my shot has been taken. Like you, I too have made the double exposure error. Now I don’t anymore. See if this helps with your work flow next time you’re shooting 6x12 again.
To add to this, I also use the rear shift to create a 6x17 shot if this format is something you enjoy. Obviously it is three frames per scene if you have enough rolls of film to shoot away, then stitch in Photoshop and crop to size to 6x17.
Basically a 6x17 with all the movements of a 4x5 without having to carry an additional camera with you.
Thanks Craig, these are great! Not sure why I never thought to use rear shift to shoot a pano, that's genius haha. I'm definitely going to give that a try!
Dam those sheep looked nervy as you passed 🤣
Those green grasses on the black sand are 😍 how could you even think B&W? Ah, it's bloody nice! I think enough sharpness in the front of the clump before the moving grass to make it work 👌 Nice falls to finish with too!
Thanks Andrew, haha yeah I think the sheep were just confused at why I kept walking back and forth so much, with going back for the camera and all 😆 Truth be told I plan to play with color versions of that grassy beach scene, but I did all that talking on camera about black and white so I figured I'd better put that one in the video.. haha
Another great production, thank you.
I was surprised how good that 30 sec with 10 stop ND came out given the wind. Really nice.
Thanks for the narrative about why u chose the 6x12 film back; I’d been thinking all thru “wish he’d taken a grafmatic [the 8 sheet 4x5 magazine] with him too” but too many toys and choices would likely detract from your experience in the moment.
Look forward to the next one - and seeing what other of my silent questions u answer in due course 😉
Thanks Eric, I did actually end up getting ahold of a 75, it's been one I've carried quite often!
The image at 4:46 is outstanding!
Thank you!
Great video Chris. Using the ND for the image at 4:30 was a cool idea, and it definitely helped capture the motion in the scene. Only thing I would've done different is maybe back up 2 inches so the grass at the bottom isn't cut off. Really cool scene! And a perfect breakfast to start the day
Thanks Brian! That's a great observation, not sure why I didn't seem bothered with it at the time. I think I expected the grasses to be a total mess anyway, haha.
Great video and fantastic images. Digital and large format is a great combo. Nice to see you’re using a Chamonix too. I have the same model, such a joy to use.
Thanks Russell! Agreed, its been a really solid camera and with the roll film back it's been great to travel with!
Sigh, all these great places, so far away.
I hear ya Bob. I'm definitely fortunate to be able to travel like that at all, but not as much as I'd certainly like to..
Beautiful area as well as captures you made. Vaat a country! Yeah, I guess you're human. That clanking sound around 9:50 as you're walking along; you really need to have those hip joints checked out. It only gets worse with age. ;) Look forward to your next video.
Thanks Jim! Haha, the joints are definitely starting to feel like that for sure so I believe you 💯 😆
Some great double exposures there. ;-) I feel for you. Try painting the advance lever flourescent orange. You'll still get double exposures, but the lever will look fancy. You seem to be pretty good with the dark slide, only one blank frame so far?
The last shot of the waterfall is great. Both exposures are very useable. Looking forward to the rest of the trip.
Haha Thanks Tim. It's nice to laugh about it, takes some of the sting away. Seems I have the opposite problem from blanks, I just need to remember I can only put one picture on a frame 😆
Man, the b/w image of the grass/mountain/clouds is terrific. That one alone makes the trip a success. Although the 6x12s will make a great set when all put together. Book time?
Thanks Frank! Ooof.. I'd really like to do a book but it's going to take me a while to figure that one out. Know any good printers?
@@ChrisDarnell That's too long a conversation for here. I'll see you in the wash this fall.
nice to know that experts like you make mistakes...lol I have just had an awful day with my 4x5 making stupid mistakes ( like taking out the wrong darkslide whilst film holder in camera), nice video shame not more with the LF camera.
Thanks Malcolm, had to laugh at that one because I've nearly done that same thing, haha. In truth I didn't shoot the view camera near as much as I'd hoped on this trip, but I expect I'll be back to make up for it sometime..
Love the comp of the first shot with the waves & smooth clouds. When did you go to Iceland? Just curious of the best time to visit. Nice work! Thanks
Thanks Ruthie, this trip was at the end of September. I'm not sure if that's the best time or not, but I returned in the winter and it was definitely a lot harsher than the first trip.
@@ChrisDarnell Thanks Chris, really enjoying your work 😊
Great stuff, sorry to see you lose some great film shots but it happens to us all at some point.
Thanks Rob!
