- Incredible eastern Iceland cliffs and an interesting basalt canyon -
In this episode I photograph a mountain ridge line engulfed in low hanging clouds with the large format camera and Horseman 6x12 roll film back, then head towards an evening location where the composition I had planned to shoot was dwarfed by an unexpectedly better view of an amazing set of cliffs on the eastern fjords of Iceland. The next morning I explore an interesting canyon full of basalt cliffs, then finish up closer to Reykjavik with a shoot at a black church surrounded by an ancient lava flow.

Those Basalt columns were amazing.
Some great landscapes
Thanks Malcolm!
Love the pano-banana-rama of the pointy hills, well worth the multi shots!
Haha thanks Andrew!
I agree with Brian, the pano was a beautiful image
Thanks James!
The ravine around 8:10 looked almost brutalist.
Awesome vid, as always. Thanks Chris.
Thanks Bernard, I can see the connection! It was definitely an interesting feature.
Wow, these Iceland videos were a great pleasure to watch! And lots of awesome images. The pano was unbeatable. Great image of the black church also. Thanks for sharing!

I liked that picture of the falls. I also like that you have your digital on hand too.

Amazing photographs. Thank you.
Thanks as always for watching!
Man, that pano at 6:23 is magical. One of your best images ever! Well done 👍
Thanks Brian! You might be right.. seems that one is a favorite for a few!
Great trip in general, Chris! And images as well!
Thanks so much Rudolf!
I thought the basalt columns in the canyon shot would have been great as a black and white shot as well. The textures and lines would probably have worked well. The Church shot was very nice. What I like about that composition is that you can see through the windows to the windows on the opposite side. Great trip Chris.
Thanks Philip, that's a great idea and I'll have to try a b&w edit. Glad you noticed the windows, I didn't talk about it on camera but I did spend a few seconds trying to line those up!
the 5D mk iv pano @6:20 ish is awesome!
super image
Thanks so much!
Very nice. Glad you enjoyed your trip
Thanks Jeff, it really was a great time. Can't wait to go back!
Killing it with this series man🔥 even getting some great shots with the digital
Thanks Kyle!
That pano…. Wow. Truly amazing shot. Beautifully done, really enjoyed this series. I need to get back to Iceland ASAP
Thanks so much for watching! I agree, I'm already feeling the itch to go back.. haha
Wonderful images!
Thanks Ted!
Wow - what a place, and really beautiful photos! 👍
Thanks Adam!
It's so funny, of all the photographers on UA-cam, you and I seem to find so many of the exact same songs on Epidemic Sound. Love your videos by the way, it's just so funny how I hear the same songs through all of them that I select myself from that library.
Ha! You must have excellent taste in music then.. 😆
Really great shot of the clouds on the cliff face. I chuckled that you included advancing the film in the video.
I had to dig for this one too. :-( Don't let UA-cam be the arbiter of your art. You have the best photography channel out there. It's a good example of how poor technology is at recognizing quality. Keep up the good work.
Haha fortunately I realized on location that I was making mistakes when the frame counter wasn't matching up. I got better at winding immediately after taking the exposure, instead of walking off and forgetting all about it.
Thanks Tim, it's too bad YT keeps burying me in the feed. I expect that will ebb and flow but I don't have any plans to change the core of my content to chase the algorithm. I definitely appreciate the encouragement, I'll always be open to experimentation and growth but I hope my channel is always about being out and enjoying the landscape, talking about cameras, and sharing my photos and experiences.
@@ChrisDarnell When you shoot a lot of ruby window folders, you quickly develop a voice in your head that screams "WIND THE FILM, WIND THE FILM, WIND THE FILM!!!!!" the instant the shutter fires. ;-)
Iceland is magical. I think, if you crop in far enough, you will find fairies, gnomes, and your occasional dragon.
It sure is.. it absolutely looks like a place you might find those critters hanging around!
Another spectacular video. When doe the book on your Iceland trip come out? Those pano shots are stunning. Where we going after Iceland?
Thanks Jack! Ha, it probably would be fun do do a book or zine, but that'll require a few return trips to get more images I think!
If you haven't already, can you do a video on your scanning setup/process?
Thanks for the suggestion, I'll see what I can do!
Highly inspirational, as are all your films! Just out of curiosity, what scanner do you use for your images? Keep up the outstanding work!
Thanks James! I'm currently using an Epson V850 flatbed scanner for all my film scans
I always shoot in conditions the present at the time, even if it's a record photo
You may never get the opportunity to visit again 📷👍
That's a very good point, and even if you do return the conditions may have changed 😣
how do you do the multiple exposure panoramas? they're fantastic!
Thanks Owen! Lightroom has an "HDR Panorama" stitching feature that will stack and assemble all the vertical frames was taking, I just make sure I set the camera to auto-bracketing so the brighter and darker images are taken with the same framing, then overlap each frame by about 1/3. You could also merge each bracketed set individually and then use the panorama stitching tool, but the HDR panorama feature seems to work pretty well.
“Cayons” in first image of video…😅😅😅
