I've been a professional guitarist for over 35 years. I bought the Zoom 505 in 2000 and then the Zoom 505 II in 2002. They're not the easiest units to learn to program, but once you get the hang of it, they're pretty simple units. It's all I've needed for the past 20+ years. Toss it in my gig bag and go. Simple, one pedal set-up at every gig. For me, the best distortion patch is A1 on the original 505. I programmed that same patch as A1 on the 505 II when I upgraded and bumped up the gain a couple notches. After dialing in the tone on my 100 watt Marshall, it sounds great. I only use about 6 different pre-programed patches in all but A1 is my main, go to distortion patch. I use this in the studio, also, but miced thought my Marshall, not as a DI. There's also a reset button to re-program all of the patches back to their original factory settings.
Oh gosh, my very first pedal almost 20 years ago. I was 16, learning to play guitar, in my first band. It was the most beautiful thing to me back then. My go to patch was C2 or 4 I don’t remember.
I love this effects box. I have used it for years. I like how I can add flanger phaser chorus and delay all together. I can even get a brilliant tone for playing my favourite band Rush. I can see your struggling to get anything out it, but believe me all the sounds are there even EVH.
I know a lot of people like to use it for modulation fx, I might give it another go in the future. I think it'd work well paired with an amps distortion.
Great review man. I've been using the Boss GT1 for years at smaller gigs and recently found this in a drawer. Amazingly after 20 years, it still worked and had all my old presets saved! 😂 I wondered how far i could push the boundaries of modelling pedals for live work but like you I realised - not this far... Having said that i remember when i first got it in the mid 90s it was fine for getting sounds for demos and getting to grips with basic modulation effects. Most kids can use free software to do that nowadays, but in 94 this was still about the price of a single boss pedal so it was worth it just as a learning tool. Through an FX loop it might be useful to have on a board in place of 9 other mod pedals if you're on a budget. The basic comp isn't bad either but I would never front end this thing nowadays. It's really just the distortions that make it sound dogshit, BUT it was very early days for floor modellers so I still give the trusty 505 9/10 for effort, considering it's price point and who it was aimed at at the time. Anyway great review 👍
Still have mine after 20 years! It'd be better if it had steroe output, but still a good deal back in '04.I'm not sure how the new MSg sounds by comparrion but that has dual outs.
This was my first peddle, and I genuinely always thought it sounded like complete garbage. lol it is pretty fun to mess around with if you don’t take them seriously because they’re pretty cheap used now, you can get them for like 20 bucks
I will say if you’re literally just starting out playing guitar than this pedal, so awesome because it does everything all in one, but that’s about all it’s good for honestly, if you just get it in like a garage sale lol
My tube amp is in pieces right now and i dug this thing out , used headphones in the output just to get some play time in, to me it sounds way better then through an amp. 20 years later lol
Do you run it through anything else? mine might need cleaning maybe or my guitar needs work (or even i'm just that crap at playing) but i can't seem to get that Rock OOMPH that i hear many peoples effects have :/
@@d4rkhound388 I don't really get that rock oomph with the zoom either. It's a great at home amp modeler but playing it live the distortion is a bit boxy for me. I know a lot of people use all the other fx except for the distortion with the zoom to get a great live sound, but I haven't tried it. I think the youtuber Dave Simpson used to do this.
@@DustinAlford Yeah i saw some russian dude i think it was playing it and i wasn't sure if you ran it through an amp to get that I'm gonna say Power behind it because the russian dude was showing off his patches and they sounded proper heavy and impeccable aha!
I dont run it through anything but a pair of old stereo headphones...i use the " Peavy " distortion, the gain at like 25, room reverb, noise gate and the eq....all parameters built in to the zoom, it sounds like complete shit through my b 52 at 100 amp and Jackson Kelly guitar but is very livable as a stand alone preamp and headphones...i think the out put jack is in stereo as well which makes a huge difference while playing with stereo headphones on.
If I were trying to dial in Gilmour for a comfortably numb type solo I'd probably use a cranked plexi amp model since there isn't usually a hiwatt model setting and I'd use a small dose of delay that repeats after a half second to a second. Here's an article I found that might help you out even more. www.gilmourish.com/?p=268
It's good enough to play those types of venues but if you have a little extra money I'd buy a digitech rp instead. It's somewhat in the Zoom's price range.
Everyone hates on the 505 and rp250 until you catch them alone with one lol. Cheap multi effects like this are great for beginners, and great for the experienced bc you can find new sounds without dumping $$$.
You're very forgiving about digital early days stuff, not even close to Line6 or - Behringer. Hell I'm even ambivalent with Digitech, some pedals weren't bad though. So in general, never liked any single zoom thing. Maybe tuners are good lol
Ha ha tell that to the rest of the Zoom crowd. I didn't realize how into the Zoom folks were until I posted this video lol. I mean it's alright but it's nothing to write home about.
@@walli2463 ¿Tiene una marca de tiempo para el efecto de violín del que está hablando? Si fue algo que jugué, es un parche predeterminado que viene con el zoom.
Exploring the vast fx-sphere today with the Zoom 505II. Let me know what you think of this unit in the comments!
I use it for home practice. Also I replaced all buttons for new.
Nice! It's a great little unit for practicing!
I use it, please watch my channel!
The Van Driver sound is formidable.

10/10, cos of your playing and cos you don't have tatoos! :D ...P.S. When was that pedal released, and what's the longest delay it can do?
