- In this video I’m showing you how to use a Tiffen Pro-Mist filter to give your footage a cinematic film look. I’ll answer questions like what are Pro-Mist filters? What Pro-Mist to buy? And more. We’re taking a look at no filter vs Pro-Mist 1/8 vs Pro-Mist 1/4, so take notes and please leave a comment below if this was helpful or for future videos you’d like to see!

For anyone who is interested; when Tiffen created Pro Mist filters they created the different strengths in order to provide a consistent level of filtration across the range of focal lengths because the filtration effect increases as the focal length of the lens becomes more telephoto. A 1/4 pro mist (black or white) will be much stronger on an 85mm lens than it will be on a 25mm lens. A common formula for using Pro Mist filters is 1/2 for 18mm and wider, the 1/4 for 25-35mm and 1/8 for 50mm and above. This principle applies to all diffusion filters. I hope this information is useful.
Wow I didn’t know this. Thanks! Good thing I got the right one haha Weeks ago I bought Tiffen black pro mist 1/4 for my sony 35mm g master lens… I like the effects it gives to my images.
Useful, thanks.
so helpful 🎉
Thank you for saying, I didn’t know that
apsc or full frame, does this matter?
Best explanation of Pro Mist filters I've seen so far. Great breakdown with perfect, side by side examples that explain the concept in a way that is easy to understand for someone just starting on this subject. Thank you!
If my lens filter size is 52 mm (Front), i need to buy 52mm ND? Or bigger so it can fit onto the lens correctly?
Amazing comparisons between a few scenes and the practicality, I think I'm going with the 1/8 as it adds a light bloom, cinematic soft flare, diminishes harsh highlights, without losing too much detail from the digital perspective, the balance between digital and cinematic film like! 1/8 is it for me!
no, seriously, this is the EASIEST, CHEAPEST way to instantly make your footage have that look that most people see all the time but don't actually know how to get it.
diffusion is huge in film. great video!!
I just want to keep watching your videos whole day. Just after watching 3 videos I feel it’s so easy because I always use to be scared of lighting and looks. You made it so easyyyy ❤️❤️❤️
I’ll try and make them faster!!!!
So I’m only 3min into this video and this is already the best video on the subject. So many other pro mist filter videos have been essentially an ad for a certain brand, or just not exploring their full use or usefulness. This is fantastic and helpful. Thanks!
Pro-Mist® is a registered trademark for Tiffen’s black diffusion filters, so this is literally an ad for a certain brand.
@@ohroonoko Yeah I didn't understand that was a ® but still, this video was more helpful than others I watched at the time. And now I have a 1/4 filter (thats honestly way too much if we're being honest!)
This came in clutch man! Appreciate you providing so many real world examples too.
Thank you so much! Glad it helps
Oh man i just started following your channel and just when I was looking into buying a black mist filter your suggestion came up. Your content is so helpful and straight to the point. Appreciate your awesome work :)
Thank you so much!! Hope you enjoy !
I just picked one up for my 35mm SLR and I am really excited to use it for these similar looks. Congratulations on 1000 subscribers....up to 71k only 6 months later!
love being your model 🖤
No one does it better!!!!
Are you guys dating? 😍

I have achieved going to the next level on Cinematography thanks to this guy
Best explanation of the effect I've seen, thanks. Gonna get the 1/4
Doing my research and this video put me over the edge. Just bought one.
great video man. I was needing help figuring out what strength of BPM to get. This video showed the comparisons without beating around the bush. Thanks man. Keep them coming.
that's exactly my goal!! thank you
Hey Brady,
Thanks for the contents. Subbed. Love the humble and laid back personality!
Thank you so much and welcome
this was realy helpful , so cool man ur getting better in every video !
Thank you a ton
Best comparison I have seen so far and I have watched everything about this now on UA-cam. I have a A7iii with 18-35mm and will be getting the Tiffen 1/4 after this!
Very pleasing to watch and follow, plenty of useful examples!
Thanks for this. Really nice and clear and one of those things that makes all the difference to a final piece. Guess I'm gonna have to bite the bullet!!!
you're videos are super helpful, subscribed.
Definitely copping the 1/8. Thanks for the video fam.
Great video man! Definitely interested now in keeping one in my bag. Love the way the highlight Roll off looks with it.
Well thank you Jon for this!!
Here I am trying to buy the sharpest lenses possible only to then add a pro must filter. 😂
I've been using an 82mm 1/4 and LOVE it for music videos and short films, but we recently did a maternity photo shoot for my girlfriend with it in a field close to sunset and learned a valuable lesson. lol We lost a TON of details and had to do a lot of reconstruction with her face, so I'm thinking I might grab a 1/8 for outside shoots and when the 1/4 might be too much.
for 82 mm 1/4 is too much. 1/8 is fine. wider the lens, the effect is less. so for wide lens you need 1/4 and for 82 mm. you have to step down . this is what i read in one of user comment
I wish I knew about BPM's sooner! I added one to my arsenal (1/4) earlier this year and it never leaves my lens! Recently shot a wedding with one on an old Nikon 50/1.8 and loved the footage. Honestly, I've been shooting stills with it on as well. You're letting the secret out! Ha, great video - perfect comparison at 3:55
Thank you for this! I love the look of it especially on vintage glass !
Good explanation with the all important side by side comparisons! Thank you!
Your vids are a vibe man, thank you
My pleasure!
Sick, dude! Legit convinced me to get that 1/4th pro mist filter.
Ahhahaha that’s what it’s all about! Thank you
Been watching your videos... Really love the way you light. Subscribed.
Thank you tons!

Thanks a ton!
very informative- thanks Brady!!
Really well done! Love all the examples Thanks
You are welcome thank you
Super Helpful... Thanks Dude!
Very good explanation, thank you ❤
Great info Brady. One question though: What are your thoughts on "stacking" an ND filter over the 1/8 Pro-Mist? I hear mixed opinions on the matter. Thanks.
I typically do that, experience SOME ghosting in direct light but haven't had extreme issues
Literally about to order one now !
Tbh this is essential to make digital photography look good.
Thanks for the vid. Will you make a comparison video on Tiffen black satin or glimmerglass, please.
Where have you been all my life pro-mists? Love your videos mate! I shoot stills down here in Australia, I'm always battling the sun. Thank you!
Go get em!! Thank you!
lovely video, thanks for the great comparison!
Thank you!!!
Thanks for the tips Brady!
You’re welcome John!!
Very good example! Thanks for sharing this 👍
And thank you also!
Awesome content brotha! Very nice breakdown!
Thank you kindly!!
This is a great explanation, thanks
Hi Brady! I loved this video and I'm about to purchase a 1/4. I noticed that a lot of people create this effect in post with very good results and I can't decide whether I should buy it or do it in post. What do you suggest? Thank you!
THIS HAS REALLY HELPED ME ALOTTT THNKXZZZ BRUH | 🙏🏻
thanks so much for this video! helps so much!
Such a great test! Thanks a lot
You’re welcome John
this was a great vibe video
Nice breakdown! Couldn't decide between the 1/8 & 1/4, but thanks to your video I now know that 1/8 is for me 👍🏻
That’s awesome!! Thanks!!
@@BradyBessette I bought the 1/8 based on this video and honestly, It didn't make any difference, it was like, the same thing without the filter!
@@CarolMiranda94 buy 1/4
@@CarolMiranda94 for wide angle 1/8 has less power. for zoom lens, 1/8 has that effect
Great video man , but how do you expose it correctly with the right shutter speed , do you use a vnd stacked up on it.
This was so helpful :)
Amazing work bro... thanks for the tips... I will be putting them in practice and tag you when is up online
Thank you so much!
Hey Brady, after I watched this. I bought the filter without thinking if I need it now or not. Damn, your reviews are sooo good.
Hey that’s the goal lol
Thank you
This is why I like my vintage Nikkor AI/AI-s lenses. Sharp enough, but smooth and creamy right in the optics. It's not quite the same effect necessarily, but it really depends on the individual lenses. They all tend to flare more than modern glass. There's SO many classic lenses you can get for so cheap that can be adapted to most cameras these days. Just find the set that gives you the look you want.
Nikkor 🤣
Great video. Thank you so much! It’s so hard to pick between 1/8 and 1/4. Might have to get both!! Lol.
I recently received a black pro mist filter and I'm working on doing a video soon about using one with photography.
exactly what i needed thank you
Thank you so much for all your wonderful videos! Do you stack your pro mist over your nd filter?
very well explained mate. thank you.
Thank you for watching
Excellent video Brady. I guess the 1/8 looks more realistic to me.. very nice
I think so too! I usually use that!
Thank you for including lots of examples - very helpful. We'll be getting the Black Pro-Mist for interviews, especially female subjects.
great video! do you have problems using zoom lenses? supposedly the glow effect is increased
Nice video and beautiful music! 🎵
Dope review. Subscribed 🤙🏼
Hello and welcome!
Hello, if I have a sigma 18 35, which filter should I buy or if I have a super takuma
Very awesome. Keep up the good work sir.
I appreciate this so much thank you Bob!
great review ! very informative !
Excellent comparisons. I have subscribed!
Awesome, thank you! welcome!
Great video! Do you use an ND and a mist, or just the mist filter?
Love the BPM! A cine buddy of mine turned me on to them a handful of years ago. Been using them on almost all my photoshoots in varying strengths. I am curious about the different Tiffen diffusion filtration. Esp the warm black pro mist 🤔
Yeah they are fantastic. Of course other brands may have better options but it’s the best quality for the price
Hi Brady. Thanks for the the info and especially the examples. I liked that you had real work examples without people and with people (your girlfriend). I bought the 1/4 filter to start with as i like the halation it produces more than the 1/8, although I can see ways to use the 1/8 as well, which I may purchase at a later date once I get used to using these filters. Take care, and hi from Canada! All the best to you.
hello in Canada from the US! Thank you so much! ProMist is great ! hope you like it!
Yessir! Those pro mist filters 🙌🏾👍🏾
They’re great!!
So the highlight roll off based from the rgb scope is basically when the highlights reach it's max peak without clipping, still retaining shadow detail and the blacks, and then falls back down into the mid tones in a declining pattern?
Excellent video ! Thanks you :)
Thank you as well!
Perfect review, i finally decided to 1/4
love my 1/4!! congrats!
You disarmed me right from the start with the Rockwell. :) Plus I'm always looking for more methods too look cinematic when all the corners were cut (DIY outsider artist filmmaker and for multiple reasons I don't like oldest trucks in the box: 24 fps and cinematic aspect ratios), so it hus very much close to home!
Well I’m very glad you liked the touches and hope it helps!
almost to 1,000 subscribers, look at you now buddy. 147,000
Massive accomplishment!
got it on my list!
Hi what exact filter did you use at 2:50 ? I really like how it changed the image. Is it the "Black Pro Mist 1/8"? or is it the regular "Pro Mist 1/8"?
Less than 1k subscribers at the time of this video and now at 158k. Solid work my man.
Love your content! How do you think the pro mist compares with the glow filters from Freewell? That would be a great video!
I haven’t actually seen them so I’m not sure !
just a short question.. if you are using that filter, do you use sharping in post ?
thank you for this video.
Hi, great video and thanks for the info. I am currently using the pro mist 1/4 with my GH5. I have my natural profile set to low sharpening in the settings. Should I put my setting back to normal and then use the pro mist or keep my in camera settings to low sharpening with the pro mist on top?
I usually keep in camera sharp off actually and sharpen in post!
Will a ProMist work together with a variable ND-filter?
I shoot a lot with variable-ND and wide open aperture but I have noticed that the variable-ND
unfortunately changes the image characteristics, such as increasing the contrast just slightly.
Do you think there may be problems by combining ProMist and variable-ND?
Waiting on this reply
Bro, I just discovered you and your channel today! You have all the info, all in one channel! Like we share the same brain! Lol. Subbed for life! 😝
Welcome to the family!!!
Thank you for sharing brother. As always, love your videos

Just followed you on ig! Would love to get your opinion on my work🤗
Let’s talk!!
Good work!
Great 👏🏾 .Question : i Have the iPhone 13 pro max with the anamorphic Lens 1.33 mk2 what model You Think is the best fit between 1/4 & 1/8 for Music video ?in Miami
Just bought some items from your Amazon list. Thanks for the info.
Another great video
Thank you!!
thank you for this video :)
The best video that I have ever see for those filters. I have one Question. I have a 77mm nd variable filter on my lens. I must buy the same diameter mm(77 to be specific) for the mist pro filter? (because you say that the correct order is: camera lens-pro mist-nd variable ) thanks! Your answer will be very helpful
Class dismist ;) nice 1. You gained 118k subscribers since this upload. Sick
Thank you for the videos. Is it possible to accomplish this effect in post?
You most likely can, some softwares have a glow effect type thing
Dayum 3 weeks ago you said almost 1k subscribers.. congrats on 17k right now haha
Hahaha right?! Thanks Simon
