This man has endured several horrendous actions and was addicted to drugs, what do you expect? Im amazed he is doing as well as he is. From the child rape to being on death row, many would have committed suicide from going through just one of these things. What do you expect from a human that has went through what this guy did? We need more empathy in our society.
I worked at a prison in Indiana and where I worked was where they put murderers that were also insane. Something that did not happen ever was what he described happened to him while in prison. I'm not saying this did not happen to him I'm just saying this never in the 2 years I worked with these inmates which many would call, the worst of the worst.

And that's the point...all these negative, judgemental, know it alls in this comment section can kick rocks. If this dudes story can positively help even just a couple people change their life and perspective , then who gives a shit if half his story is exaggerated. If you clowns been through or seen a fraction of what this dude has, who knows what kinda f ed up stories you might tell when you finally get exonerated of your charges after 22 years. That's all this dudes prime years stolen from him...never to be givin' back to him. Think of all the good times, learning experiences, love making, partying you did from 20-42 or however old you are. You might fill in some gaps too if you were put in a cage all that time. Fighting dudes off from f cking you in the ass. Forced to fight just to see another day. The whole time knowing you shouldn't even be there. Systems f cked up. As long as people down play stories like his, and this has happened too many times in our justice system, nothing will change. Check Kalief Browder's story if you care to. That Kalief for sure wasn't a "meth head" or full of crap as many of you claim this dude is. -A side note, for everyone that's on some sort of pain pills in this country, there's probably equal amount of people on Adderall or an equivalent which basically is meth...

To all the folks thinking Nick is snakey:
1.) He's been severely psychologically scarred. Lengthy solitary confinement can be extremely damaging. He was in for 22 years. That alone will be excuse enough for someone to be a bit squirrely.
2.) He stutters, so his inflection seems kind of weird and forced, because it is forced.
3.) He has a history of stimulant abuse. he may not have stopped. I won't judge him for that. He'd probably upgrade/downgrade to adderall once he starts making money.

I know what people mean when they say something seems off about him - but, if one was raped had their head smashed in as a child, is aphasic and has spent 22 years on death row only to be released (exonerated by three sources of DNA, sounds pretty conclusive to me)? Anyone would be a little off. That doesn't mean that he's a saint, or that he's necessarily reliable on all the facts, but he's a human being - we can only take so much. The thing about him saying what a great guy he is? He's brain damaged and more than a little childlike - hes not going to make sense in the same way that someone who hasn't had the experiences he has had would.

I'm not sure what there is about his story that people don't buy. There is pretty clear evidence that he is and experienced much of what he claimed. He's not here asking for handouts, either. Not sure who you think he's trying to con. If you think he's playing up his story to sell a book or movie, then every autobiographer is a con artist by that right.
For those claiming he has some mental health issues, are you surprised? Experiencing what he did at age 7 would be enough to ruin most people. It's no wonder he took to a life of theft and drugs in early adulthood. And he freely admitted to how awful of a person he was. You can tell that he hates the person he was. He never said he didn't belong in jail, but he certainly didn't deserve the extent of hell he went through.
Regarding him having a "Messiah" complex, there is probably some truth to that. But if you've been down to the bottom of hell and stayed for a while, like he has, and somehow crawled your way back up, you'd be proud of yourself and every positive contribution you make. And for good reason. I bet he feels like a champion every time a single person claims that he's helped. He never thought he could do so much good for others, so of course he's proud of himself. This is a broken man that has crawled out from the depths of hell and is simply trying to get by with a message of positivity. Don't give him your money. Just take his message and do some good in the world.

There is VERY clear EVIDENCE that he's a liar! He lied to the police in order to get his ass off the hook in the first place according to him and then he even admitted to be a liar. There's too many fanciful things in his story also, this guy has a knack for telling crazy stories. I am not blaming him for his lies either because it appears that he suffers from mental illness that is a direct cause of the nonsense that he speaks of.

    • @spongebork
      @spongebork 6 років тому +72

@William Runner: He is quite open about that he lied. That's what young people in such a fucked up situation do. You possibly might do the same. It doesn't matter though.
What matters though is that there is FACTUAL EVIDENCE that he was indeed on death row. Fact. There is factual evidence that he was wrongly committed to death row. There's factual evidence that the "justice system" took 21 years of this mans life. That is all fact, and you can not disprove it. Is everything else he states about the abuse he suffered correct? Who knows? You certainly can't proof it. He can't proof much of it. But are you telling me that someone trying to turn his life around, after WAITING TO GET KILLED FOR 21 YEARS is not someone you can at least give the benefit of the doubt? Does he have a "mental illness"? Maybe. After all the abuse he suffered, why wouldn't he? Again, you can't prove any of that. You're just talking out of your asshole.
You should step back and have a serious look at yourself. There is something seriously wrong with yourself.

A comment from the Joe Rogan sub reddit I found VERY interesting:
“I've been pondering whether or not it was of any worth to post this. I've decided I feel that I should.
Nick and I met last year. I'd heard his story on another podcast, and it intrigued me. I reached out to him to book him as a speaker at a professional conference that I was on the organizing committee of. He came, did his talk which went over very well, and the two of us got speaking and formed a friendship, or at least the start of one.
From our initial meetings it was clear that Nick had a lot of problems. Many, many problems. How could he not? The real issues started for me though, when I kept catching him in lies. Lies about his 'story', about his life currently. When anyone would challenge him on these lies, he'd get extremely angry. Scarily so. He'd bang his fists, screamingly deny telling different stories, snarl abuse, go on the defensive. To see him so angry was almost like seeing a dog turn on you...he tries - very hard, I think - to be softly spoken, prides himself on being polite, gracious and forgiving. Until he's not. And when he's not it's like a different person comes out. I once saw him squeeze a glass so hard in anger that it snapped in his hands, blood everywhere...just because somebody in his friend group jokingly corrected a word he mispronounced. His command of vocabulary is another thing he takes very seriously.
I quickly learned that Nick has an 'entourage' - for lack of a better word. A group of people that are almost constantly with him. In the group are spiritualists, faith healers, psychics and the like. They are very influential, and have convinced Nick that he is 'a divine angel on this earth' in his own words.
Nick revealed a very complicated relationship with his ex. She has accused him of menacing levels of stalking. I believe there is a restraining order, or at least was. He has a great deal of anger towards her that has often bubbled over in front of me just speaking about her.
Regarding his daughter and the locals 'driving him out of town', from what I've heard he wasn't driven out. He ran. Things were very...worrying. He 'predicted' injuries to his daughter more than once - asking for funds and donations after these injuries - long before her eventual death.
Money was a big motivator for Nick and he didn't seem to care how he got it. He was very open about asking. Thinking back, every single time we met he asked for money at some point. At times, for huge sums for something like 'film rights' (I don't work in the film or even media industry. I don't write either. I have no business owning film rights to anything). At times he'd just ask for 'a few hundred to get straight' or even 'can you pay for my dinner/beer' with no reason given. He was very forward in asking and had no shame about it.
During our conversations, I found out that he'd received $4million compensation from the state of Pennsylvania. I never found out where that money went, but it was clear Nick no longer had it and he didn't seem to have anything to show for it either. That's one of many mysteries surrounding the man that I'd love an answer to.
I ended the friendship with him within a few weeks. He's a very troubled individual. Ultimately, I started out sympathetic towards Nick. Now I would be genuinely scared to be in his presence.
This is all tip-of-the-iceberg cliffnotes. And it's all from 4 or 5 meetings. This wasn't over the span of months or years of letting your guard down with a close friend.”

It brings tears to my eyes hearing your story, Nick. Just a gesture for what its worth. Its tears for the courage you've had to turn what you've been given, into what you HAVE. So many people I've encountered in life get swept away picking up the pieces of the shroud that is the circumstances they have been given to them not by the choices they made, but by the pressures that life has shown them. Seeing grace in that you were able to do what you have, ...
There are a lot of people hurting in this world. A lot of them take with them the bitterness that life has strewn around them.
Dedicating your time and awareness to the betterment of yourself and those around you, is purely inspirational man.
And a stern example for other souls struggling to find their place amongst all the madness in this world.

I ran & ran... to different countries, I ran away from my problems & I ran from relationships.
One day I stopped, because life was getting exhausting & there was just no direction nor plan.
I started healing myself as well.

I’m not saying this guy didn’t go through some terrible terrible shit as I believe he did. But his personality is that of one who exaggerates and dramaticizes things to their extreme worse case scenario. EVERY situation. There’s just so many either conflicting, highly highly unlikely less than 1% chance scenarios, or downright strange things that come out of this guy. He was dealt a shit hand. But he’s playing that shit hand so hard for sympathy by exaggerating all of his life experiences to the worse most extreme scenarios to make himself seem like some kind of fallen angel. He’s “secretly a saint” as he says.

The inspiration of this man's story isn't in the tragedy, it's in the fact that after enduring all of that misfortune, he came out full of love and kindness. That is absolutely not what the prison system or his treatment were meant to produce, and he fought tirelessly to become a better person in spite of his circumstances. I think it's totally unfair to judge a man's honesty based on his words, mannerisms, and body language. Anyone else that had gone through that would be rightly angry at the world and would have little to no chance of facing a normal life. I'm so impressed by this man's self awareness, his humbleness, and his drive to do good. What a hero.

DNA evidence cleared this guy. Science cleared him. If he had raped and killed that person, his DNA WOULD have been found. He's desperately damaged, and clearly he's done some awful things. Perhaps he's acting here about how terrible his life has been, or perhaps he's deeply disturbed by spending two decades in a brutal prison. Whatever the truth of that, I think we should rely on science rather than intuition, whatever you think of the man's personality. I feel extremely sad for him. He had the best years of his life taken away. I doubt I'd have survived that.
