  • IB heads off to the river Dove fore her first time using a split cane - bamboo fly rod. Split cane is a material that used to be incredibly popular, but these days carbon has taken over as the material for a fly rod. With the weather warm and sunny they're hoping for some good dry fly fishing for trout, but fly fishing UK can be unpredictable! Can IB figure out how to cast the bamboo rod properly and catch some wild brown trout? Enjoy - My FIRST Time Using A Split Cane / Bamboo Fly Fishing Rod

Over the years I have gone from Sage carbon rods to nowadays the modern Fiberglas blanks by well known Kabuto and Steffen Bros., but wanted to experience bamboo so I had a Garrison 204E 7 foot reproduction made for me. This is a joy to cast as long as the proper size and weighted reel is on it. The modern skeleton style lightweights although beautiful to look at will not balance my rod like a proper Hardy Perfect or older Uniqua reels. Great fun and a pleasure to cast when balanced.👍🇨🇦👨‍🦳

Just one more thing. In Thomas Edison’s winter home in Fort Myers Florida (where I practiced for 33 years.) On the wall there is a 10’ bamboo rod with the 150 lb tarpon he caught it on. I own 12 carbon fiber rods from 2 wt to 11wt. But to fish a Bamboo rod is just special.

Great video. During lockdown 1 & 2 I built 2 glass and two cane rods, perfect antidote to working from home and getting away from a laptop. It was my first time and patience and perseverance paid off, I couldn't be happier with the results. Most pleased with my cane 7'6" 4#, if I do say so myself a thing of beauty. Like IB I have a fast casting style and had to adjust but it didn't take long and it is a joy to cast. First trip out I had a handful of Yorkshire Dales trout and grayling to just under 1 3/4 lb and the sensation of playing a nice fish on cane is as they say, makes you feel more in touch with the fish. Keep them coming, maybe you could do a fish off new v old cane?

Glad you enjoyed the bamboo IB. I use one for special occasions, with an Abel reel too - we really ought to use a Hardy Perfect, but the Abel is a great reel. You caught a couple of great fish - made it look easier than it is!

If rod weight is a concern. Perhaps a hollow built bamboo fly rod should be tried. A split cane rod builder cane tailor the casting action to your liking.

Lovely video. I have a 1960's Hardy Phantom Palakona 9ft #6 3-piece cane rod I was gifted on the proviso I never sell it! It only comes out for special occasions, fishing a chalk stream etc. I think using a hand built rod, made by a real craftsmen is a privilege. It's somehow a more special experience compared to using a mass produced, production-line rod, no matter how good the rod is. You really have to 'use' a cane rod, it doesn't 'cast itself', which makes catching fish on one even more rewarding. I also think using a cane rod transports you back to more simple, slower times when the world wasn't in such a hurry! And that's certainly something I appreciate now and then!

Loved this video and understand why people like split cane-they have a really beauty about them. When I played golf many years ago I had a putter with a hickory shaft and wooden head. It was a real bugger to play with though and cost me many a stroke but it was a thing of beauty to look at and hold.
