  • Originally, the parts for this series were to be separated into 4A and 4B signifying the different paths that Lu Bu follows a little better. But now that I got to play this again and look at this dumb story I am more certain than ever that the Mod author intends for us to play the first path where Lu Bu conquers the world vs this stupid path where Lu Bu is a good guy that saves the Han (oh and also become crippled can't fight anymore and become a hermit, sorry if I spoil it, its just so stupid, I had already complained about that in Day 1) In any case, this story ends in the "perfect scenario" where we support Liu Bei and the Han yadayada and make peace with everyone except the evil Cao Cao, because the Han is good and anyone who goes against it is bad. In fact I think Zhang Ren said it best about the present situation, I am going to miss that guy, already missed him and his ... ways in the previous path.
All in all, now that I got a refresher course going through this dumb mod after 20 years, I can safely say that it was a terrible experience and the story was a C+ effort at best, carried by some funny bantering between the decent characterization of Lu Bu's followers (But not Lu Bu himself and Diaochan, those two are too deep in the good guy act, even in the evil path) The author definitely has a Shu (Han) bias and it shows, but that was how the Three Kingdoms was like in the 90s and 2000s so I can't fault him TOO MUCH for it, but I will say that Lu Bu being a gentle (not even kidding) good guy from beginning to end very off-putting...it really feels like we play as Lu Bu in name only.
As for gameplay, well I've complained about that all game, but to summarize, 90s mechanics (well it could even be more of a Koei thing) with RNG upon RNG (Even receiving buffs is RNG, thank god healing isn't at least) and reinforcements that instantly gets to attack you but without the benefits of out leveling characters or losing because any character is defeated (Feels like playing Fire Emblem except I had a choice to let the guy die or not) makes this a chore to play. I am sure the author is really proud of himself making such a hard mod (he even shrugs off other people when they messaged about fixing some of the problems because he is an arrogant fool) but artificial difficulty relying on RNG and overbearing amount of enemies that can heal themselves every time you hit them just isn't it, at least in this storyline you get some of those guys as allies and they completely wreck the AI because they are OP and unkillable...which eventually leading to unkillable units vs unkillable units (Well they are not completely unkillable, but you gotta go through the RNG and also put your unit in danger to lower their defenses, and then you gotta score good RNG to hit them for over 80 damage for any of the damage to stick...yeah, stupid is what is) It wasn't fun, and the only reason I put up with it is because I am playing Legend of Lu Bu. That was it. If it was about anyone else I would've abandoned it long ago.
I did clear the actual Legend of Cao Cao though because while the same mechanics were there, the battles were fair and you don't lose the instant someone was defeated so RNG was acceptable as "perfect play" was not a demand. Hopefully Legend of Jiang Wei will be a more palpable experience, but the moment I see it being crap I am just gonna drop it half way.
The Legend of LuBu (LuBuZhuan 呂布傳, hereafter LBZ) is a MOD game, based on the game system of the popular battle chess game (Similar to Fire Emblem) - Legend of CaoCao (CaoCaoZhuan, hereafter CCZ) by KOEI. CCZ, originally released in 1998, is the third and last game from KOEI’s battle chess series about the Era of the Three Kingdoms in Chinese History. Well plotted and designed, its fluid gameplay sparked a trend of modding of which LBZ is an outstanding product. From script to battle design, LBZ is single-handedly created by tnu84 and released on the Chinese forum xycq (XianYuan ChunQiu), which has become a renowned CCZ modding hub with its many dedicated experts. LBZ is one of the first complete MOD to come out on the forum, and it follows the conquest saga of General Lubu, hailed as the most feared general of the era. With its touching plot, memorable characters, dialogues of wisdom and humor, and novelty in gameplay, LBZ has remained a classic.
