13:20 - I might disagree with not being good for doc filmmaking - I shot a mini-doc on it last month and it was amazing. I was using the L-seris batteries with an adapter and would maybe change the batteries once in a day shooting well over 2 hours of footage a day. The best part is the continuous shooting - that is so helpful for interviews knowing you can do a 30+ min interview without the camera stopping (kinda like the GH5). If you are comparing it to the RED...the RED is what they use to shoot Chef's Table - and that look amazing.

Love the cinema pocket. It is a beast of a camera. Even the lowest quality raw codec blows the 8 bit codec of my Sony away by miles! Won't even pick my Sony up anymore to shoot any cinematic content! Also DaVinci is boss to work with. Such a versatile tool and It renders alot quicket than premiere pro! I grade all of my footage from all of my cameras in DaVinci now, then just use premiere for putting my clips and audio together.
I clicked exclusively because you made me laugh with the fogger in the thumbnail. The excitement for new toys is real with me too. Dweeb squad for life. ✌️
Hey Matti - just wondering if BMPCC 6K still requires special vari NDs like IRNDs or hotmirror, or T1s? I filmed with every version of BMD cams until the 4K Production model... and all of them were beautiful but I was constantly having to correct out the IR pollution and the grade changed at every step up in ND density. So awesome without vari NDs but much more time intensive in post for anything else. I eventually went back to Sony and Panasonic cameras... and I miss the BMD look (but not the battery stuff - ugh - still??? I had to carry a full bag of 20 batteries for the original BMPCC). So how does it respond to different neutral densities and do you need to have different grades and different values. Your footage looked great - so just curious what ND setup you were using.
Great video Matti as always, footage looks incredible. I have the 4K and it's just astounding. There is a blackmagic raw plugin for Premiere called BRAW Studio from a company called Autokroma - works seamlessly.
Got notification straight to comment without thinking of anything definitely it's going to be legendary like always 👌👌👌 very excited to see when you compare with your Canon EOS R
Great review Matti! I was actually considering the BMPCC6K for shooting documentaries until you pointed out the data rate. If the files are that big then the 6k raw files might not make sense for long interviews.
My favorite thing about this video is realizing that canon, sony and Nikon will now see this camera and realize they need to step up their game to compete.
12:49 that DR is freaking impressive! Btw. Matti, you can't say colors are almost straight from the camera after you applied a lut to it : DD Unless your lut only handles brightness :D
For nature videography the crop on the slo-mo is actually a good thing. Some 300mm or even a 200mm lens you can get a decent shot from far away. Did you test the IS on canon lenses?
You were using the sigma 18-35 f1.8, right? This is the combo I wanted to look at and you are the only filmmaker I know loves that lens. Would you use this for docs? Vs your c200?
I've had similar experiences with my BMPCC4K. They are both great cameras. (EDIT: I don't know why people complain about the crop factor. So, you might have to MOVE the camera? In what situations do you see yourself shooting inside a closet in slow motion?)
I loved the ursa mini, glad to see bm kept the user-friendly interface. The mini is a bit unwieldy but I love the picture quality and built-in ND filters. The handheld looks like a good compromise for its compactness, but it also seems a monitor is essential if you cage it.
Matti- what IS a tough, dustproof 4k+, high frame rate capable (100+fps), and compact-ish camera? It needs to fit in a handheld gimbal and ideally have stabilization built in. And quick continuous autofocus. My dream is to film runners in remote locations, hence the requirements above. Ha, that's pretty specific now that I see the list in one place.
The common misconception with the file sizes is easily explained this way. The bigger the file (usually) the more uncompressed the footage is. So the footage IS what it is, and your computer doesn't need to process it to understand it, it only needs to read it. If you transcode an H264/H265 file into ProRes or DNxHD, it will run much smoother because it won't require as much processing power, just read/write speeds.
Important question: is that a wake-style jetski or some space age wakeboard? I've had horrible luck pulling out of the water behind a PWC. cool video, too!
I said the same things a year ago when I picked up the 4K version and have never looked back, funny hearing you love on this camera a year later, but seriously go back to your canon please we don't want your work to be beyond incredible with this in your arsenal! And don't let Peter have a play with it you guys need to keep the dying breed of canon users happy! :)

dumb question probably but can yo use MFT lens on this Ef mount or will you get vignette? I have the 4k and love my vintage MFT lenses. If i cant use them i dont see the point in this for me.
Thanks for the awesome news, Matti! What did your setup look like? What lenses, stabilizer, etc. did you use? A photo (or video) would be great :) Btw. would you recommend it for stock videos?
Nice review. I think the plugin for B-raw in Premiere was out, when you did this review. Next question would be: Is it worth instead of a BMPCC 4k with a speedbooster?
I’m the nube of all nubes, but I absolutely love editing on Resolve, it’s hours faster for me to edit from start to finish, and the fairlight and fusion apps being internal help out so much with the work flow!! I found it to be good switch.
The thing with Blackmagic Cameras is they are designed to be video cameras. They are not stills cameras with video functions added, which is part of the reason why the BMPCC has so many of the features filmmakers want at a low price. Do the RED or Alexa have IBS or constant autofocus? If you want to shoot pro quality footage (can it still even be called footage), surely you need to operate the camera like a pro. That means manual focussing etc. I'm a stills photographer and use Canon 6D and 6Dii, which got a lot of complaints, especially on UA-cam, about the terrible video functions but I've never used them and don't want to pay extra for a great full frame camera for something I will never use. If I want to shoot video then the BMPCC would definitely be my first choice, especially as it includes Resolve.

Shaun Ortman yeah i was trying to be sarcastic about BM compare to Alexa’s. I have recently shot with 4K pocket and Ursa Mini and the Dynamic range sucks compare to Arri. I also think the color space is inferior to the Arri Wide Gamut but to be honest the image quality is way better than any Sony or Canon camera out there. I would like to see Blackmagic to go all the way and try to compete with Arri, Varicam and red by building a better camera parts, accessories and put more money on the color science and dynamic range and sell the cameras a bit more expensive in order to get rid of all the quality issues that come with it. If they are making cameras this good at this price I would expect them to produce better image quality and better quality control on their products at a higher price for sure.
JUAN ROSA ua-cam.com/video/ynhjKaTgLf4/v-deo.html “blind “ image comparison with more than 2000 people participating. Most people preferred the BMD cameras. It’s revolutionary because of the price point.
There's a plugin from Autokroma called BRAW Studio that let you edit the raw footage in adobe premiere. It's improved a lot since I did my walkthrough/review, at this point, I'd highly recommend it.
Unfortunately that plug in does not work for some reason with raw 6k. One of my announces with the 6k. Hopefully that will have an update as well.
@@juliustubbsDP I haven't tried it yet, but Autokroma said in a tweet that BRAW Studio now supports the BMPCC6K.
Just use Davinci lol. It's designed specifically with the BM sensor in mind. 3rd party plugins will never be able to achieve the same results as BM proprietary software.
@@STGFilmmakers That's fair, but not always an option. The company I work for is deep in the Adobe ecosystem, so the plugin is the best option for me, right now.
Dan Baker yea unfortunate but understandable😞
I have the pocket 4K and I absolutely love it! The 6k would be nice but for my workflow the 4K better serves my needs. Great review dude!
Do you use the EF mount with the 4K?
My MPCC 6K arrives Monday. Super excited for the lil beast.
10:40 There's a third party plugin for Premiere, I don't know what is it called but it works pretty well with Premiere. It feels basically like handling redcode.
Matti, their is a plug in you can buy for Adobe that allows you to read BRAW in premiere and after effects.
It seems like everyone has a really positive opinion about this camera and they really seem to be packing in a ton of features. Whereas canon wants to keep dumping features lol.
Definitely looking at this for my next camera.
I knew it wouldnt take long to find somebody mentioning Canon in a completely unrelated video. +10 points for me!
@@DESIGNS-vo1mt Well, for a lot of years you only could get Canon or Nikon ... then Sony came on and changed the rules and now it's Blackmagic time. I own the 4K and I love it.
@ oh ok
@@DESIGNS-vo1mt I remember a few years back I bought 2 brand new Canon 6D ... that was the "epic camera" for me .. after one year a Sony A7s and this year the Pocket 4K. What time to be alive.
@ You should try the GH5s ;)
Great video. This camera should be compared to other cinema cameras. I cant stand why people still complains about lack of auto-focus, IBIS, or other features that are not present in cinema cameras. I hope you have a chance to compare it to an Alexa or Red. A blind test would be very interesting.
Cine Decodificado yes! Matti and Potato Jet need to get together and make that review!
Agreed many seem to forget this is a cinema camera meant for professionals and not a hybrid camera for consumers/prosumers.
@@coveredtreasuresfilmprojec7590 I would argue this camera is not meant for professionals. We had one on set this past weekend as a B Can and it pushed back our timeline multiple times because of random issues. The form factor, build quality, QC, and marketing all point towards prosumer.
Tom Antos shot what you are looking for in his most recent video with the results coming in his next video.
@@badinabadway589 I'll check it out
13:20 - I might disagree with not being good for doc filmmaking - I shot a mini-doc on it last month and it was amazing.
Videos are looking good these days thanks to Blackmagic 👍
Matti: I not using this camera where there's water splashing
Also Matti: *shoots in a lake*
Keep up the good work matti
I never had idols in my youth but thanks to you guys and gals (Becki, Lizzie, Sorelle and co.) and of course Pete I now do.
I'm in my "late 22s" and I never felt so capable in slowly succeeding and comfortable in failing hard if I do.
A Big THANKS :)
Well Blackmagick made it to 3019 while we all are still in 2019. Amazing!
Agreed
Only the price is from 3019, the rest already existed since years :)
That B-Roll at the beginning is great!
The colors man! The dynamic range.. those two alone gave me nostalgia
thanks for sharing your thoughts about the BMPCC 6k !
great footage and cute family weekend moments!
i used to photograph pro wakeskating for nike. so i was naturally turbo stoked when i saw you shredding. let me know if you need trick tips, you should be out there busting pop shuvs and kickflips in no time. great video matti, i always enjoy your content!
B-Roll sequence at the start was insane! Awesome job Matti
As a filipino guy living in Australia I can say that aussie's are very good in technology and industrial stuff so I am not surprized that they are dominating the prosumer market. Also nice review matti!
Great 👍 review Matti. The footage from that black magic definitely looks very cinematic.
I use the Autokroma plugin for Premiere to import BRAW if you want to eliminate that Resolve step from your workflow.
Or just delete Adobe and use Davinci Resolve. That way you're killing like four birds with one stone.
That pocket joke was actually hilarious LOL, amazing content as always Matti!!
Can you share a link with some raw ungraded clips for download? Thanks
I just started watching your daily vlogs religiously and I gotta say... I LOVE THEM!!!!!!!
OMG, the intro footage was absolutely GORGEOUS! The only thing stopping me from ordering one is the lack of AF. That is a massive bummer.
Michael M. Costa almost all cinema cameras don't have AF
YES!!!!! I am so excited for this review!!!
Matti! The 120 FPS in 1080p does not have as crazy as a crop as the 2.8k. And it looks amazing!
Thanks for the video Matti.. I am still waiting for the BMPCC 6K to be delivered here in Australia. As always your video are great. I look forward to seeing more of your videos with this camera. Have a great day.
I think that the "photography" community in youtube has influenced camera companies to try harder. Great video! 👍👍
It's definitely not waterproof. Few minutes later he uses it on a boat
he said "weatherproof"
@@XAVAGE he said he probably wouldn't film when there are water splashes around and then he drives in the boat while filming so close to the water 😂
ahahaha I thought I might be the only one that booked that. Literally hovered it over the edge of a boat while moving ahahah
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I was impressed with the specs, and even more impressed when you said this was all handheld lol. really lovely camera for the money.
He shot the handheld at 50 fps to reduce the shakes
You didn’t talk about it but the Lowlight capabilities are sick too!
I'm reall y hyped to see comparison between this camera and the up coming Z CAM E2-S6 :)
Earlier today I had searched up reviews of this camera hoping to see you had gotten yours, but no video yet. I checked back later today and here it is ! 😄
So dope! This is on the wishlist for sure.
I have so much school work but I have waited so long for this vid!
Lightworks Pro has also implemented support for Blackmagic RAW
Love the cinema pocket. It is a beast of a camera. Even the lowest quality raw codec blows the 8 bit codec of my Sony away by miles! Won't even pick my Sony up anymore to shoot any cinematic content!
Also DaVinci is boss to work with. Such a versatile tool and It renders alot quicket than premiere pro! I grade all of my footage from all of my cameras in DaVinci now, then just use premiere for putting my clips and audio together.
I really love my BMPCC4K, not sure I will upgrade to the 6K. But I’m blown away by what you can get out of a camera of this size!
Great review! The image is insane good!
Whoa! That footage... REALLY AWESOME!
Wow Matti that footage was amazing!
This is some of the best looking footage ive seen on your channel.
You complained that the x-t3 is APSC and you prefer full frame yet it’s okay if the resolution is higher?
It's ok because he was defending canon💀
That smoke machine is coming in useful for thumbnails eh 😂
Got notification straight to comment without thinking of anything definitely it's going to be legendary like always 👌👌👌 very excited to see when you compare with your Canon EOS R
I think you should try ursa mini 4.6k and please review it.. 😁
I JUST bought one second hand, i agree it would be great to see more on it, especially from familiar faces
@@matthewaitkenfilms9477 yupp😀😁
Great review Matti! I was actually considering the BMPCC6K for shooting documentaries until you pointed out the data rate. If the files are that big then the 6k raw files might not make sense for long interviews.
9:28 Matti says he went all handheld 60fps. I am wondering if he had IS on the EF lens tho...
If you want to edit BRAW in Premiere, just use the plugin called Autokroma. It adds support work in both premiere and FCP10.
No. Just use Davinci Resolve for a far better experience.
Well to be fair he is getting a very nice reflection from the water which is really flattening out the range quite a bit.
For nature videography the crop on the slo-mo is actually a good thing. Some 300mm or even a 200mm lens you can get a decent shot from far away. Did you test the IS on canon lenses?
How's using Resolve a downside? It's faaaar better than premiere!
i can't work slowmotion in Resolve, so its a downside to me.
Victor Hugo why? It has a lot of retime options now.
@@thevictorangel what? Right click on a clip and click on change clip speed. It's piss easy. It takes literally 3 seconds.
You were using the sigma 18-35 f1.8, right? This is the combo I wanted to look at and you are the only filmmaker I know loves that lens. Would you use this for docs? Vs your c200?
Wow MATTI💥😍❤️🏄👊AO GLAD TO SEE YOU MADE A BLACK MAGIC VIDEO😍💥👊👊Been WAITING FOR THIS EPIC VIDEO, CANT WAIT TO SEE
I've had similar experiences with my BMPCC4K.
Still trying to get a 4k camera, but at that price I may just want to skip straight to the 6k. Awesome video, thanks Matti!
RS Warrior Bryan same
For 4k you'll need a Metabones Speedbooster for about 700$. So real price difference is only ~450-500. 6k only!!!
When you started shoving tripods and lenses and things in your pocket I died 😂🤣
Thank you Matti! I've been waiting for this video ever since you mentioned it!
Great review, Matti! I really enjoyed watching this review. In fact, I really love watching your videos. Thanks for the share!
I want a cottage.
(Sorry, I know that’s not the point of this well done review, but that lake just looks so wonderful)
LOVE this review Matti What an insane camera! which one of your LUTs did you use for the b-roll footage dude?
Important question: is that a wake-style jetski or some space age wakeboard? I've had horrible luck pulling out of the water behind a PWC. cool video, too!
OUTSTANDING VID MATTI! COuld you make a pocket 4k vs 6k vid? All the other ones out there are lame. THANKS!
And the future is here📍
You can download a plugin for premiere pro to view the .braw files!! It's called braw studio!! And the braw footage works almost flawlessly.
Or just use Resolve as it's the better software.
Did you have issues with infrared, or did you use ir filters?
Hey just wanna ask hier. I will like to a camera for music video. So I will to know if I will take the Canon 5d mark IV or the black magic pocket 6k . Please I need help for that before I choose the wrong camera🙈
I would be interested mati on why you don't want to try editing in davinchi, I'm still trying to figure out what premier has over davinchi
Definitely an impressive little camera but that battery life is something I Don’t know if I could go back to again. Every camera that I have now has great battery life.
Excellent shots and review.
dumb question probably but can yo use MFT lens on this Ef mount or will you get vignette? I have the 4k and love my vintage MFT lenses. If i cant use them i dont see the point in this for me.
Thanks for the awesome news, Matti!
What did your setup look like? What lenses, stabilizer, etc. did you use? A photo (or video) would be great :)
Btw. would you recommend it for stock videos?
