Sean, New subscriber. My son bought a Blackbird in 1998. He let me ride it and he was on a CBR 929 and did a brief blow by. I dropped to third, laid on the tank and cranked it I looked at the my speed as I flew passed him at 130 and let off at 178 . When I pulled over my hands were shaking from adrenaline. Once in a lifetime experience on a cool Saturday morning in PA.
I absolutely LOVE my Blackbird! I was graduating high school in '96 and it was my dream bike. Wasn't able to get one until many, many years later because not only were they way out of my price range but the insurance was also insane until I got old enough. Now I've got my Blackbird and a GL1800 in the garage and all of my motorcycling dreams have come true.
You know a Honda Africa twin is quicker off the line and more comfortable right? Even if you're bold, you're probably not going over 120 on a public road unless you're a kid with no brains. The AT might top out around 150 but it doesn't matter IRL. Up to 120, it has better acceleration than this bike and that's all that matters unless you are on a racetrack. Blueprinted and tuned a Honda 750cc V4 from a decade earlier will eat a Blackbird for lunch. Just mop the floor with it in every metric. The brand new superbike in the showroom uses 20 year old racing tech. The Blackbird has its roots in the '70s just like the V4 only the Blackbird has zero racing pedigree.
HAHAHAHAHAHA smoothest running engine huh? Can you balance a quarter on the block and have it NEVER fall off because it's so smooth? Didn't think so either. That title belongs to the "other" Honda that they couldn't even sell and gave em away to trade schools...............Remember THAT ONE? It's the Honda CBX, the most refined engine in the world and you can start it with the quarter on the block on edge and it will NOT move due to vibrations. And honestly folks that crown was taken back by the ZX14 wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy back in 06. The Blackbird barely exceeded the ZX11 by 4 mph to take the title. The ZX11 reigned supreme for nearly 8 years from 1990 to 1997 when the Blackbird debuted. But it is a very finely refined bike of its own merits, just wanted to state some FACTS here. And keep the record Straight. Now the title still belongs to Kawasaki with the H2 and the track with the H2R for the record.
When I first got into motorcycles about 7 or so years ago these things were a dime a dozen. Now just a few years later they almost never pop up for sale and are usually $4500-$5k
Hey Sean . I live in Australia and still own and ride my first road bike , a 2001 Honda CBR1100XX BLACKBIRD , ALL black . Not sure what current laws state , but I feel blessed . Got my rider's licence after I turned 30 . Did a couple of "training courses" within a fortnight (booked out) , and was able to buy and ride anything legally , with one stipulation : No Pillion for 12 months ... She's a good one , and I still love her . Look a bit more into the history of the model . First couple of years had carbs , then they're fuel injected . Not sure about Kawasaki , but I have reason to believe that Suzuki developed the GSXR1300 , competing with Honda , to be the first production motorcycle to exceed 300km/hr . They got it , with 1340cc ,versus Honda's 1137cc . One last note : Head honcho's in the Japanese plants obviously had a healthy sense of competition , with a bit of humour . In Japan , there is a bird of prey called the Hayabusa . Some would say part of their diet consists of Blackbirds ...
My first true love! I rode a '99 Blackbird from Submarine Base New London CT to Naval Base Kitsap WA immediately after graduating Sub School and getting my first orders. 3000+ miles with a backpack and the factory panniers, everything else went over via FedEx. I have since traded her for a Goldwing, but miss her dearly every day. Keep up the great work, Sean!
@@paulog6598 We took 10 days, 9 nights. Avg 300mi/day. The Blackbird could have done more, but the group consisted of my CBR, one GSX-R 1000, one Aprilia RSV Mille, and one Ducati 996 SPS. After two gas stops my shipmates knees, backs, and arms were shot and we had to stop. 😁
I love mine. The "Gentlemen's sportbike" only topped 157 in a brief moment of youthful daring.......but man she got their quick. Can't wait to ride her again in the spring
Well u need to check it because I know for a fact it will go 178 all most 180. Ive done it on my uncle's. He did have his carburetors ported and has a Yoshi on it... Can't remember what sprockets I'll have to ask him
I ride back and forth to work when its in the low 30's to upper 20's. It's a 32 mile trip one way so you can ride all year if ya wanted to and i'm going on 50 years old LOL.
@@turbobusa02 They will top out at 180mph factory stock If you got a well running example and good air. (true speed as well, much more on the speedo), no mods needed.
@@GoldenCroc The "Official" speed from Honda was 178. Granted with a tail wind ya might get there and with mod's for sure, but my ZX11 will be right on your arse and passing ya cause it can hit 204, I had it to 201 and that is rather scary fast. But it's due to the gearing change and takes a bit longer to haul that up, but I will be passing your Blackbird and shamin ya in my dust, LOL. And if I hit the NOS button hell man you so far gone behind me it is laughable. I do love me sum Kawasaki yes. But props to Honda as well, they DID have a good bike.
because in 2000 the y2k bike had a top speed of 400km/h so the zx-12r at a top speed of 312km/h is not in the conversation. i think you mean to say how is 1 year of hold the record from the 1300 r count as decades when it was beaten the next year by the y2k bike
I owned them both at the same time from new; a 1999 tri-tone copper Hayabusa and an early production 2000 ZX-12R in green/purple. Both with simple mods, full exhausts and Power Commanders. The ZX-12R was a more capable bike despite what the magazines of the day printed. It pulled harder up top and had superior handling when compared to the Suzuki albeit the Hayabusa made more power down low. Both machines had astounding capabilities, even for today. Had they modern traction and wheelie control, the numbers they laid down would've been utterly insane.
Well the ZX-12R is out of conversation and become a somewhat a sport tourer bike because the hayabusa caused the "gentleman's agreement" to limit their bikes to 300km/h and the busa caused this gentleman's agreement.
Great vid. Nice to see the XX get some love. I owned 3 of them. One thing though... No Blackbird ever made 162 at the wheel. My 99 had a Two Bros 4-1 and a PCII. It made a legit 142. Most are @ the 135ish range stock. Still quite a bit for those days. I ran a 10.5 in the 1\4 my first time out. Rags had them at 10.2 and I believe every word of that.
Honda initially claimed 164hp at the crank, but that was overly optimistic so they reverted from SAE to DIN horsepower and claimed 152hp from the 1999 FI model. Drivetrain losses included, these normally output ~135 at the wheel.
That’s awesome. I just turned 50 and have been riding motorcycles since age 12. I currently ride a ‘22 S1000RR on the street and I thank god that I am still able to every time I ride it.
Lovely trip down memory lane! I bought my XX new in 2001 and it served me very well, as a daily commute here in Sydney, a 2-up grand tourer and for weekend scraps with my buddies. The roll-on power and torque of the bike was exceptional, even with both of us, panniers, top box and double tank bags (to hide the speedo from the missus!). Sold it in 2007 as I was working overseas a lot and not riding it, and can still see my baby leaving me. Sold my 964 that year too. Two big regrets in my life. I'm 5'11" and my only gripe was that occasionally I would get a crook neck from being a little forward. Now on a '15 Ninja 1000, no such issue. However, the Blackbird will reman special in my memory. Cheers and thanks from Australia - Dave
I loved riding for hours just to eat we'd either go pie in the sky or Robertson pie shop if we wanted a longer ride.... I think we have the best county roads around
@@acitizen.5276 Yes, back in the day it was awesome. Now, too many wannabe riders with all the gear and little idea going way too fast have ruined it. I've seen over 15 police vehicles on 1 run. These days I go to PITS with my son or daughter on the back for a break (live in the north of Sydney). Every now and then I let out a few cobwebs. It is an awesome road, that's for sure!
@@Enoonmi Absolutely. The Royal National Park and Macquarie Pass were always a great spin. Often head to Wollombi too - so many top country roads, as you say. Bucketts Way from Gloucester to Walcha, then Oxley to Wauchope etc. Makes me want to get out there! Cheers - Dave
I own a red blackbird, I have had it for almost 12 years, I bought and sold 2 Hayabusas and a ZX 14 in my opinion the blackbird is in a league of its own only the Zx14 comes close.
I have had 2 blackbirds, they where my all time favourite bike, until I bought the zzr1400, that for me beat the Blackbird.. comfort and fuel consumption, goes to the blackie.. There is constant rumours , that there maybe a new Blackbird. If they made another one more modern, I would defo want one.. Great Post.. 👍
Have you ever been on a bmw k1300s? Motorcyclistonline reviewed it along with the Hayabusa & zx14r and at the end of the day every test rider was wanting to get back on the bmw. Bought one 4 yrs ago and have since quit looking at other bikes. It is that good 😁
@paultalbot3652 I suppose it depends on what you are looking for in a bike, comfort wise, it would probably win. However, one of the biggest considerations someone would look at these styles of bikes is speed, which the bike would fail on(in regards to top speed). Now, this is just my personal choice . It is also the look factor, and I'm not a fan of shaft drive or BMW usually. (BMW sport exception) 3rd generation Busa and zzr1400 are gorgeous looking bikes. However, if it was based on regular miles munching only, which I don't do, then comfort would be the no.1 factor, and that's where the BMW would probably win. If that was my main overall concern , I would probably buy a full on tourer.
I mean the fact that you can still get these for an absolute song second hand is fabulous. It's an incredible sports-touring missile with a bulletproof motor and LITERALLY THE COOLEST MODEL NAME OF ALL TIME.
$1300 for that bike is such a steal!!! love seeing that ur making vids again. yall the ones that got me into riding! So ty for that and keep em comming!!!!!
I had a 2002 Blackbird it was a blast to ride. It was silver and like you in the video it spent it's time on the back roads. It amazing to just be cruising and look down and realize I was doing 90 or a 100 MPH. It was such a smooth ride. This video made me miss it so much.
NICE! There is a difference between quick and fast - Quick usually means off the line, quarter mile type of speed. Whereas fast means for the most part top end speed or top speed. This bike is FAST!
I been riding for 45 years now, i am a big Honda fan, they are never flashy or the fastest but ultra reliable and top quality! Drove some four's in my youth, than i had a tuned Honda CBR1000F, fast bike! had 2 Pan Europeans because i did 25 to 30.000km/year and now i have the new NT1100 for a year, topquality like it a lot. Kind regards and greetings from Belgium and happy trails.
Thank you for review!!! I just got back from the morning ride on my Blackbird... such a joy. Such a great bike. I have a vfr and Super Tenere but non of them give me such emotions as old CB1100xx!! Sean, your rear mirrors need to be tightened a bit - the screw is behind those rubbers on each side - very easy to tighten and far better after..
I love your taste in bike's Brother you mentioned my favorites. I like the Blackbird too and the Super Tenere and the VFR 12. All around I kinda like the Super Tenere overall kinda the best then the VFR. Those 2 but I've always been partial to the Blackbird
I have watched many of your videos and had to roll my eyes for most of them BUT this one is great, you make a ton of sense. Bigger bikes are my thing too. And having a bike you like and enjoy is more important. Yes, they do handle and are more comfortable. Liking the look is icing on the cake. Can't go wrong with a Honda.
I absolutely adore mine. Have put 80,000 miles up on it, cost me an alterantor and the removal of the rear brake from the brake distributor, PB284C Candy Phoenix Blue and I love her.
I had one. The only words I could ever come up with to describe riding it under full throttle were "breath taking". Will buy another one if I ever get the chance. Cheers!
I had one of the original ones in the UK, (CBR 1100 xxw)it was called the super blackbird over here, they originally had 4 carburettors, no injection and were faster in my opinion, no low speed judder in heavy traffic, it was stripped and the engine was rebuilt by hand by an engineer which increased the BHP, awesome machine.
Mine juddered terribly when filtering for example. I fitted a lambda sensor delete (just a resistor) and it transformed the bikes low speed running. Literally night and day different. I think the bike was always hunting for the best fuel ratio, but I guess the resistor set it to a constant fuel ratio.
I have a 5th generation VFR 800 Interceptor and it's in the same category as the Blackbird. The engine sounds the same, thanks to the gear driven cams, it's very comfortable to ride and can handle corners like a dream. Now mine has quite a few mods, tune, full exhaust and a for other goodies that makes it spit fire and the top speed is 171mph actual, love these older Honda bikes.
Closest replacement for this bike is the Honda VFR1200F I have one and it’s an absolute beast. Mine has a tune and exhaust. I’ve reached 185mph on mine. Power to the wheel is about 175hp with the tune. Most underrated bike Honda ever built with its reliable 1237cc V4 engine
For a V4 engine, it sure had a bland noise, sounds like a chainsaw with a pipe. I also remember when they first came out, how expensive they were, how they didn't sell, and sat around dealer floors for a year or two and then sold at loss.
@@exothermal.sprocket the biggest downfall with most Honda motorcycles is the price. I mean look at the new Honda fire blade RRR. An absolutely amazing motorcycle but for $30,000. They just priced themselves out of the market. Keep in mind the reason the VFR1200F was so expensive had to do with the development of the first ever DCT in any motorcycle. Unfortunately, they split the cost between the DCT model. This made both motorcycles very expensive. Also, the development of the new engine and an entirely new motorcycle drove the cost up. Buying these bikes now at the massive discount is a great proposition for anyone.
I had a 5th Gen VFR800 Sean. It had linked brakes too. Quite a few people de-linked them. Some of those did it simply because others did without really understanding why. I quite liked the system and never considered it too intrusive. At slow speeds in traffic, squeezing the front brake brought a little rear in too which really helped slow speed stability for me especially with a pillion aboard. At higher speeds I liked the way that squeezing a big handful of front brake made the bike squat rather than diving.
The build quality of these bikes was superb, just compare how many other manufacturers bikes of the same era are still on the road vs blackbirds. Absolutely bullet proof, i really miss mine.
Love your vids - this commentary illustrates how much exposure the ZX12R got in that era - zero. And it will wipe the floor of a Blackbird in a straight line. Pound/hp, the 12 was pretty close to the 14. Give it a shot one time.
I had a zx12r then a blackbird then a 12 again. They are both wonderful, and i can see an argument for the xx being better all things considered. But the ninja just rips and screams on another level.
Thanks for mentioning the ZX-12R, I have a 2005 model with aftermarket mods and it beats 1st gen Busas all day and would definitely wipe the floor with that CBR...it's not even close match!😁
Now too rapidly approaching 70, and on my 4th Blackbird. My last I think. But so pleased to hear someone else who needs meds every time they look at such a beautifully designed bike. Yes, it is perfect in every respect. Cruise at 200 for hours. Absolutely linear acceleration. Torque there's plenty. The love of my life.
I absolutely love these Bikes, I have owed 3 in the last 25 years, currently have a 2000 model in Blue, just been around Europe on it with my mates for 3 Week, 2900 mile and it never missed a Beat , MINT 👌👌
I used to sell these. I had a red one. Dealers only got one red one each! I had to get mine from another dealer because ours sold on day one. Before it I had a ZX11, Ninja. Both bikes were tuned with exhaust systems. The Kawi was carbureted. I'm not sure which one was faster, but they both were a lot of fun. The CBR was the smoothest and lightest steering bike I ever owned. I remember the metallic red one had the first digital dash as well. Wonderful bike. I later sold it for an FJR, and then a Super Tenere'. The S10 was the most comfortable. The ZX 14 Kawi, was the most powerful of all street bikes, if I remember correctly. The CBR-XX was an icon though. These new bikes have something like 230 HP! Amazing power. I've never ridden one of these new ones.....😁
I own a zx 14 2006 and a cbr1100xx 2003 fuel injected. Those bike are really made for crossing big miles at high speed pace Autobhan road style. Its just adictive, you stay aroud +- 5000 rpm on the tall 6th gear and you twist till you hit the red line on straight long stretch. You drive in a confortable package, good covering from the front fearing, really love those bikes. When you know well the bike you can push really hard the bike and it will keep the pace ( in the steet).
I traded in a 2005 ZX-10 for an '08 ZX-14, and actually faulted the bike for being perfect. The 14 did absolutely everything well and effortlessly. The ZX-10 by comparison (not that the two should be compared) was hillariously vulger and uncivilized. If I had to choose to have one back, I would take the 10 hands down...and likely secretly wish for 14.
Had a blackbird, last year of carby model, custom headers and exhaust, carby work, made 167hp on the dyno, was an absolute animal of a bike, and probably the one i miss the most out of all the bikes ive had.
I had a Blackbird many years ago. Loved that bike! All day comfort, crazy speed, iron clad reliability! I rode it every day and even ran it at Boneville Salt Flats one year. Just an all around great bike. I even knew of a guy that broke an Iron Butt record by riding his something like 1400 miles a day for 7 days straight!
Nice to see you setting an example wearing all the correct protective gear. As bikers we all look out for each other and you wouldn't believe how many people don't wear it. Nice to see.
I loved that bike! It was the smoothest sportbike I've ever owned. 2002 1st year it came out in silver. Someone stole it five years later. 🤦🏾♂️ but I had so much fun on that bike the top end was crazy! I miss her "Pearl" was a beast! Thanks for sharing! 👍🏾😎
In my Kawasaki dealer I remember there was poster on the wall. It was the brand new ZX-14 beside the Space Shuttle. It said "The new ZX-14 faster than the space shuttle". In small print it showed the 1/4 mile time of both and the 14 beat it. It then said top speed of 170 on the 14 (Or something like that and the space shuttle like 10000 mph.) It was a long time ago I don't remember stats. I asked them for the poster and they said NO! :)
I knew a guy who was 82 at the time he was riding his XX. He's probably no longer around, but he used to tell me he competed in the Isle of Mann 5 times, and even finished twice!
Kyle here from SAM Magazine, based in South Africa. I own a Blackbird myself. Best sport tourer Honda has ever produced! I ride mine every day - around town, long distance, everywhere. Whether I have travel gear on the back for a rally or my wife is braving the pillion seat, the Blackbird is comfortable. I agree though, they should have kept this model up to date.
So glad to finally see your review of the blackbird after seeing the grey one you had ages ago and couldn't get it running right! Amazing your back on one! This was my first bike and I must say it has to be one of the best all round bikes made and still in existence today! Very stable, very comfortable and very quick!
I had a 99. It was AMAZING to ride. Could corner like a monster and took me closest to 200mph that I've ever been. Custom intake, bored, dual exhaust, tuned and lightened. Absolutely a unit.
Awesome motorcycle, I had two of them back in a day. Selling the first one, I couldn't find a replacement and bought another one, but fresher. Good old days, great motorcycle for that era!
Absolutely love the Blackbird, it's a favourite of mine despite never owning one. You've got me going down a rabbit hole now searching used ones. Whilst Honda never replaced the Blackbird they kinda did with the VFR1200. I never felt that was a Blackbird replacement though. Wouldn't it be great if Honda bought this back though. They did with the Africa Twin, why not with the Blackbird... Dreaming....
Hey, Honda made two generations. Major updates post 2000. Their 1997 model was the fastest and it went backwards from there. I know, I owned them here in Australia!
I liked my 87 FZR 1000. With the aftermarket exhaust, the weight came down to 485lbs wet weight with a full tank. It handled like a 600, had 320mm front rotors and a very strong powerband that kicked you in the face from 8000rpm all the way up to the 11000+ redline.
I’ve had my Blackbird 26 years and although I’ve not ridden a lot of miles on it (20k), it has never let me down. It was only a few months old when I got it, and had damaged bodywork, which was perfect for me as I wanted to Streetfighter it. I have had to replace 1 lightbulb in all that time.. that’s it, and that was in the aftermarket enduro fairing! There are two bikes which enthusiasts repeatedly asked Honda to upgrade. The VFR and the Blackbird. I agree with you it should have evolved, they should have upped it to at least 1300cc and added ABS, TC and a few other farkles. I had to buy a ZX14R to get those. I don’t know if they talk to each other in the garage at night, but I'm Sure the ‘bird knows it’s my favourite.
I have owned over 30 bikes in my life. 4 of them were blackbirds. I have been looking for another one for the last 6 months. It's the best bike for a guy that's 6'5
I had an 01 ( Red ) for about 5 years. Very smooth and dependable. Mine was lowered 3/4" in the front 1.5" in the rear. Had slip on's, PCII, and -1 on the front sprocket. My beast time at the track was a 10.35@134.5. 1.65 60'. This was foot shifting on Pilot Road tires. I also weighed in at 215 in leathers.
fun fact for you sean but if im correct there was a subliminal msg in the name hayabusa it means peregrin falcon and the main source of food of that bird is blackbirds
You said it Sean! All these kids on their R6s GSXRs etc... do my absolute head in nowadays. Riding in no gear thinking they're untouchable. They really let the biking community down. One day they'll grow up.
45 years old, and I own a GSX-R K2 600. Absolutely nothing wrong with my bike, and I can assure you that I have absolutely no problem with other sportsbikes. Went on track with my mate on his ZZR 1400, and I can assure you that everytime he looked behind him, there I was, on my 22 year old 600. Just saying
@@dandangsxr where did I say old bikes were bad? I own older bikes myself because I prefer them. It's not the bikes I'm talking about it's the riders. Youngsters who ride R6's and GSXR's for example who give bikers a bad name by riding incredibly recklessly on the roads.
@benmanning4340 All these kids on R6's/Gsx-r's thinking their untouchable. Their young riders , who will not let the biking community down, their the next generation of bikers, who will learn the hard way what tarmac does to skin, at any speed. I love my gixxer, ridden other bikes, and go back to my gixxer every time. Weather you ride a Harley, Suzuki, Honda, Yamaha, each to their own. I used to put my leathers on everytime I went out, but now I don't, especially if I'm just going to the shop down the road, a pair of good jeans , jacket, gloves, lid, and sometimes my boots, good to go. All I'm saying is each to their own. Keep it shiny side up and ride safe
I f'ing love this bike!! Mine is a silver 2002 and was/is my beginner bike and it will surely be my ender bike. As for the ‘tech’, I’ve added some really cool and inexpensive stuff like a small display screen that connects to my phone, a taller touring windscreen, front and rear cameras, a digital display (sits on top of the analog one), and a gear shift indicator. All of these upgrades were super cheap and there are also very inexpensive body kits for it on Aliexpress (thank you China!). It also has a Yoshi pipe and tuner, allowing it to go ~200mph and 0-60 in ~2.6 seconds. It’s so smooth and comfortable to ride (like your mom) and the balance is insane. It just floats over some pretty nasty road conditions here in Los Angeles. I’ve tried the rest, this is the best!
Another interesting bike from honda, is the 1985 vf1100S v65 sabre. It's engine differed slightly from the vf1100C v65 Magna, and it shows. I have hit the mythical 177 on mine that some people say is impossible. But after a proper carb clean and tune, and some other small maintenance, it can be done. They're hard to come by, but if you’re ever presented with the chance to own one in decent condition, take it.
I love my Blackbirds, I own 3 Blackbirds, two 2000 and one 2006 model in blue, red and silver/titanium. Also I own a Hayabusa gen2 and a ZX14 2009. But somehow the blackbirds generate more emotion. Thanks a lot for the nice video. There are not really much current videos are made for the XX. May you should make another one. The XX forum is also nice, with a lot of nice member in it.
Honda is a superb engineering company. I am Busa guy and still appreciate many of the motorcycles Honda designed and built that I have owned. Two V 65 Sabres, a 750 Honda in 1971 and a Valkerie in 2012... plus I sold for Honda back in the 80s and liked what they built from ATVs to the Goldwing and CBX 1000 with 6 cylinders.
Coming from an R6 onto a blackbird....much more comfortable, and a lot less gear changes. Still have the R6 for fun but besides the weight, I prefer to daily the bird
Glad to see another video from my PA friend. I moved to southern delaware a few years ago. I REALLY MISS THOSE HILLY PA ROADS. DE roads are straight and absolutely no hills or mountains
Glad to see the blackbird getting the props it deserves in the modern day. I’ve had mine 5 years and absolutely love it, I will NEVER part ways with it for as long as I live.
I rode a 97 around the USA for a 10,000 mile trip in 2001. Left on May 1st and returned on Sept 1st. It was an experience that I will never forget. It was awesome!
I've got one from 2007, i love it! Just a little correction here Sean : The first 3 years of production was carburetted, then the first fuel injected (EFI) came out at the end of 1999.
IV a 99 blackbird, she is one of my babies and I will be keeping her forever, awesome for drifting and rolling burnouts on private track obviously or touring about in comfort ,they tick so many boxes 😎 Awesome video as always 🏍️😎👌
I Love my '99 Blackbird. It's going to hit 100k miles this year. So good to see someone still talk about how awesome it is, even though it's 25 years old. Thank you for the videos and the bible verses!
Love the included Scripture, and a nice bike as well. I'm 64 and keeping my Thunderace thank you very much... Riding my Scout bobber while I'm restoring it.
Indeed. Point stipulated. As far as fast goes, there’s no substitute for displacement. Love your glimpses at classic, interesting and wow bikes past Sean!
The Valkyrie was surprisingly fast and also comfortable. I think they need to bring back the ST1100. It was a great balance between sport and touring as was the VFR.
Dude, Hondas linked brake system is awesome. Especially the linked brake system with ABS. I had a supercharged 2007 VFR800 with the linked brakes and ABS. I upgraded the forks with Ohlins internals and put a Nitron R3 rear shock on the bike. That bike with a full tank of gas at 6 gallons was as heavy as the Blackbird. Because of the linked brakes, I could trail brake into a corner faster than most people on their super sports and hyper bikes through the canyons. Rider makes a big difference but linked brakes give you a huge advantage.
Now this, my friend, is a real bike. I borrowed a superblackbird from a friend of mine, sometime in the early 2000:s, and i was truly impressed. At that time i had a kawazaki ZX9-R, and the honda was better in so many ways. However, in the early ninties, we in Sweden had a bike i belive you didn´t get in the U.S, the Kawasaki ZZR 1100. It made a whopping honest 170mph, and about ten years after that we had the ZZR 1400, who had a limitation set to 186mph (300km/h) without it it was even faster. But, all that raw power was scary on all the kawasakis, on the superblackbird it was so god, you almost felt safe..
We missed you, Sean. I'm glad to see you again
I've been double checking to make sure I hadn't missed something.
True, thought maybe he was done.

Sean,
New subscriber.
Did ye aye?
Im sorry but I call BS. Do you have any idea how straight of a run you need to get to 178 safely? Try again bud.

@@redraiderrider3289 you live in the jungle? Mountains? tell me because you need like 5 and a half feet to go to 178 on the blackbird.
@@Lurch-Bot but IMO the Blackbird is the most beautiful bike ever made. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I’ve only got eyes for my XX.
Blackbird kicks the African Twine for cornering and braking feel. African Twine doesn't make 170bhp at the rear wheel neither.
the africa twin is 0-60 in 3.58 secomds, how does that beat a blackbird at 0-60 in 2.7?
African Twine looks nice but also a bit dull looking. I'd rather an MT10.
It's not just the speed, it's the build quality and the engineering. They are smooth as silk to ride.
The smoothest running engine I've owned to date.
Amazingly smooth engine. Twin balance shaft for the win
You know about the hayabusa yes? 🤔
You only paid $1300?? You stole that, man, what a deal.
I'll give you $1400 for it!
i will pay 3000 without thinking if i can found it in the country that i lived in
I paid about the same.
When I first got into motorcycles about 7 or so years ago these things were a dime a dozen. Now just a few years later they almost never pop up for sale and are usually $4500-$5k
Awesome mate, remember you had a blackbird before,an absolute monster everyone forgot about 🤠🙏🇬🇧💯
That sounds like an awesome roadtrip man!
You must have loved the beast, and those goldwing motors are so totally awesome engine's 👌 Honda never let me down, quality 🙏🤠
How long did it took you?
@@paulog6598 We took 10 days, 9 nights. Avg 300mi/day. The Blackbird could have done more, but the group consisted of my CBR, one GSX-R 1000, one Aprilia RSV Mille, and one Ducati 996 SPS. After two gas stops my shipmates knees, backs, and arms were shot and we had to stop. 😁
awesome to see a video about the blackbird! I own a 2000 blackbird in red. i ride it all the time and it still puts a smile on my face. Great bike!
I love mine. The "Gentlemen's sportbike" only topped 157 in a brief moment of youthful daring.......but man she got their quick. Can't wait to ride her again in the spring
I've just finished cleaning mine after todays ride and got welcomed home with this vid....hehehee.
Well u need to check it because I know for a fact it will go 178 all most 180. Ive done it on my uncle's. He did have his carburetors ported and has a Yoshi on it... Can't remember what sprockets I'll have to ask him

Why the 2000 ZX-12R wasn't in the conversation is a mystery. It's arguably the best bike of the speed war era.
because in 2000 the y2k bike had a top speed of 400km/h so the zx-12r at a top speed of 312km/h is not in the conversation. i think you mean to say how is 1 year of hold the record from the 1300 r count as decades when it was beaten the next year by the y2k bike
I had one, had a Bonneville time slip taped to the inner fender showing 200mph.
@@mamoruchiba3301 The first year ZX12R was unrestricted.
I have a 97 with a snail. You don't see too many on the streets around here anyway. Glad you're keeping it!
Where did you source the turbo from?
Never saw a turboed bike in person. Pretty cool!
Rags had them at 10.2 and I believe every word of that.
thank you for stating this
The figures quoted by honda are at the fly not at the rear wheel. Although that seems like a significant drivetrain loss
Honda initially claimed 164hp at the crank, but that was overly optimistic so they reverted from SAE to DIN horsepower and claimed 152hp from the 1999 FI model. Drivetrain losses included, these normally output ~135 at the wheel.

What? No ZX-12R?
Have you ever been on a bmw k1300s? Motorcyclistonline reviewed it along with the Hayabusa & zx14r and at the end of the day every test rider was wanting to get back on the bmw. Bought one 4 yrs ago and have since quit looking at other bikes. It is that good 😁
@@DropGearDisappear83 It's shaft drive, isn't it?
@paultalbot3652 I suppose it depends on what you are looking for in a bike, comfort wise, it would probably win. However, one of the biggest considerations someone would look at these styles of bikes is speed, which the bike would fail on(in regards to top speed). Now, this is just my personal choice . It is also the look factor, and I'm not a fan of shaft drive or BMW usually. (BMW sport exception)
3rd generation Busa and zzr1400 are gorgeous looking bikes. However, if it was based on regular miles munching only, which I don't do, then comfort would be the no.1 factor, and that's where the BMW would probably win. If that was my main overall concern , I would probably buy a full on tourer.
I've got a '97 with 100k miles on it. LOVE IT! Just oil changes, 2 valve adjustments, a R/R and stator, a few chains, and a bunch of tires,
You meet the nicest people on a honda, and i did own a Super Blackbird back in 99. Good bike for sure!

Not quite sure about that. Every motorcycle manufacturer produces the occasional pig from time to time.

Whereas fast means
for the most part top end speed or top speed. This bike is FAST!
Love my 1993 ZX-11d. Bought it brand new in 1993 and still enjoy riding it to this day.
Damn man its nice to see you posting again. I have dearly missed these videos
Good to see you again!!
Cheers!
I have two of those. 1997, 2001. Great fun, and beautiful.
I think that's my favorite.
@@n300zx931 Quite so. If you can get past the engine noise (unlike any satisfying V4 noise out there).
@@exothermal.sprocket I think mine sounds nice
I had a 5th Gen VFR800 Sean. It had linked brakes too. Quite a few people de-linked them. Some of those did it simply because others did without really understanding why. I quite liked the system and never considered it too intrusive. At slow speeds in traffic, squeezing the front brake brought a little rear in too which really helped slow speed stability for me especially with a pillion aboard. At higher speeds I liked the way that squeezing a big handful of front brake made the bike squat rather than diving.
The fastest and most powerful bikes that I’ve ever been on but felt the most confident was always a Kawasaki Ninja. ZX14 or ZX11 it doesn’t matter.
Don't skip right over the ZX-12R.
The zx10rr was by far the best
The build quality of these bikes was superb, just compare how many other manufacturers bikes of the same era are still on the road vs blackbirds. Absolutely bullet proof, i really miss mine.
Love your vids - this commentary illustrates how much exposure the ZX12R got in that era - zero. And it will wipe the floor of a Blackbird in a straight line. Pound/hp, the 12 was pretty close to the 14. Give it a shot one time.
I was about to write the same, the ZX-12R wasn't even mentioned even though it beat the Blackbird and Hayabusa in a straight line.

Yes, More of these please! Love that bike.
Got a 2022 ZX14R myself. I love this thing!! Kept my ZX9R for a track bike.
"Steet" bikes...Am I right?!
I love my one. Classic Honda build is a rare thing nowadays

In my Kawasaki dealer I remember there was poster on the wall. It was the brand new ZX-14 beside the Space Shuttle. It said "The new ZX-14 faster than the space shuttle". In small print it showed the 1/4 mile time of both and the 14 beat it. It then said top speed of 170 on the 14 (Or something like that and the space shuttle like 10000 mph.) So glad to finally see your review of the blackbird after seeing the grey one you had ages ago and couldn't get it running right!
I still think honda needs to scale up the trail 125 like they did with the rebel.

Have you ever reviewed the ZX-12R? There was an awesome competition at the time between the Blackbird, ZX-12R and Hayabusa
I own a 12r best machine ever made
I’ve had my Blackbird 26 years and although I’ve not ridden a lot of miles on it (20k), it has never let me down.
I'm 6ft5 too, owned mine nearly 10 years, had others since but never can get rid of this thing, would instantly regret it.
Ya but they needed about 170cc added to pass the bird
You have maintained your bike very well for so many years. The condition is commendable. A man who loves his bikes, right there.
@@dandangsxr okay bud, ride safe
I like riding in a t shirt. I accept the danger and consequences. I don’t worry about it. I have fun.
We missed you man, please more videos on this channel
and then Suzuki made the Hayabusa "peregrine falcon" to prey on the blackbird
Oh so TRUE....... and stock the ZX14R and Busa are neck and neck for sure, depending on who is drafting whom.
Well yes.... but only a mother could love the looks of the Busa!
@@jseyc77 This Mother (fukker) LOVES the busa, Just wished they would update and improve the headlight.
@jseyc77 but it preys on blackbirds
The Eye-Abuser preys on good taste.
AYO THIS IS A DREAM BIKE
its so cool!
Just love my BlackBird. Im 6ft 5 and got the 800 VFR bar raisers just makes this bike Holy 😂. It never misses a beat. It's from 97 with carbs. ❤❤
Ive got the ‘98 and the same bars. Beefed the front springs a bit and nitron rear shock. Cant complain …
I love the Blackbird. But Hayabusa for life.
How ironic is this video...I am literally waiting at Honda to pick up my new to me cbr1100xx in exactly the same color
Congratulations, how’s it all going.
Coming from an R6 onto a blackbird....much more comfortable, and a lot less gear changes. Still have the R6 for fun but besides the weight, I prefer to daily the bird
I had an 02 & 03 Blackbird. Most comfortable & fastest bikes I’ve ever owned. 84 miles round trip everyday. I really miss them both.
Sean, I have and am trying to sell my Superblackbird. Thanks to you everyone thinks it’s worth $1,300, and not the couple thousand I’m asking.
I'll give you 500 and a Chipotle gift card but that's as high as I can go.
I actually own one it’s a 2000 CBR1100xx I love it and it’s amazing never felt a bike like it
You forgot the Kawasaki ZX12
No he didn't it wasn't fast
Glad to see another video from my PA friend. I moved to southern delaware a few years ago. I REALLY MISS THOSE HILLY PA ROADS. DE roads are straight and absolutely no hills or mountains
How you forget the zx12r 😢
Zx10rr
First thing that came to mind for me too
No doubt , I own two ZX12R's , '00 , and '03 Muzzy , definitely faster...but would love a Blackbird. Honda #1
Kawa its fasted i have blackbird @@frankflanagan7388
And later on the the ZZR1400
Hey Sean, thanks for the video. Did you get the ZX12 in America? Have you had one?
Click bait title, I dont think dude rode anything faster then a moped.
Glad to see the blackbird getting the props it deserves in the modern day. I’ve had mine 5 years and absolutely love it, I will NEVER part ways with it for as long as I live.
It doesn't make 162hp to the wheel Dummy and no one is racing them on racetracks and beating 600s😂
IV a 99 blackbird, she is one of my babies and I will be keeping her forever, awesome for drifting and rolling burnouts on private track obviously or touring about in comfort ,they tick so many boxes 😎
Awesome video as always 🏍️😎👌
I Love my '99 Blackbird. It's going to hit 100k miles this year. So good to see someone still talk about how awesome it is, even though it's 25 years old.
Thank you for the videos and the bible verses!
I own a zx12r and i love my bike it feels planted at any speed and looks like a modern bike.
Love these videos!!! Been missing you brother! 💪🏼
4:45 - You earned a new subscriber, sir. Not many people unapologetically quote scripture.
Hey Sean , I had one just like yours sold it and have regretted it since. I like the gray the best. Dont let it go!
Hi Are you interested in reviewing the motorcycle dash camera?
Yes of course
