    One more bit of advice...the top of the shift rod where the "scissors" connect has a blunt side and a side that has a sharp edge. That sharp edge was made as a ramp to push those scissors around. Knowing that makes it much easier.

    Ok I have worked on these motors for 40 years. There are two things I see that caused your over heat. First you don’t have the muffs on correctly. The rubber cups should be vertical, you have them horizontal. Notice how the water is just pouring out the back, prop side, of the muffs? They need to fit tight to the case. Now the round muffs is what I used for years, and still do, never any issue with overheat whatsoever. Just remember they have to fit snug to the case, or the water cant be directed into the water pump.

      Wow, now I’m thinking my evinrude motor is ready to take out on the lake. This helped a lot! I have been stuck on this for so long. What about if my primer bulb becomes soft after running for A few minutes, to the point where the engine won’t get any gas I don’t think. Because I have to keep pumping the bulb once it starts to keep a good flow going. What could be the issue there? Thank you!

    • @BlackoutBilll21
      @BlackoutBilll21  2 роки тому +2

      @@calebwinterbottom196 You most likely have air in the line. I would make sure your bulb is facing the right direction! also make sure your tank is vented!. Finally try a new line and bulb. If that doesnt work check your fuel pump/ or your carb could be dirty

    I have a 74 70hp evinrude. The muffs work great for it. You do need to put hose on the right side of water inlet. I let the water run for a minute or two before starting engine. Then once the engine is off i let the water run some to flush hot water out.

    These motors are not self priming. Basically if it has a single "pee hole" you can use muffs but if it has the dual exhaust ports like this motor (I have a '77 70 hp...same thing) then you MUST USE a barrel or drop it in the water. Very frustrating but you might burn your engine up otherwise! Hope this helps. Cheers

      @@BlackoutBilll21 the clear silicone that was used as a sealer was definitely the problem. Anything the gets between a rubber I’m-teller and stainless housing other than water or grease causes friction and drag. That means heat and premature filler. If the manufacturer doesn’t call for,it never think you are smarter than the engineers unless you have a good reason to do so or there is a paradigm shift.
      One such paradigm shift is how everyone (like Jiffylube, etc) says change your oil at 3000 miles. That hasn’t been true since the 1970s and all cars exceed the interval nowadays. All you are accomplishing is throwing your money down the drain.

      There’s no reason that you can’t use muffs on that motor. Any motor will need a good seal in order to prime the pump (if the water pressure is too low) otherwise it will just suck air. Use an adjustable bar clamp to get a good seal on the water inlets…..
      Some smaller horsepower engines with the screened inlets will need the pump to be submerged to be primed and you wouldn’t be able to use muffs…..but this motor can easily use them.
