These older v4 engines pistons are a little louse when cold they swell up a little when they get hotter, check the compression when at operating temperature it will surprise you. And yeah your right them coils look like a breakdown waiting to happen. I’ve learned the hard way that just because you have a little spark don’t mean a thing under the compression it will misfire or won’t fire. I love the Chanel and the videos too keep it up 👍.
Unsalted life ...thank you for the tips and the kind words. I really appreciate your comments and advice. Stay tuned for part 2 and we’ll see if it starts and runs better after the new coils and proper champion plugs.
@@LivetofishOutboardRepair looking forward to seeing this, and thanks for the kind reply. Old outboards always love new parts unless they are made in China.
I apologize for not understanding, when you put your 1973 85hp Johnson outboard powershift 2 back together again, my question is, when you put the lower end back together with the upper end, in what position do you put the shifting shaft,I've tried it in neutral and foreword and then back in reverse the way I took it apart, I can't get it to shift into foreword gear, need some advice
See part 2 for reassembly. I think I put the shift control in reverse when I disassembled it. Did you make sure yours was shifting correctly when you had it off the motor? See Part 2 ua-cam.com/video/lLQ8i8QXnMo/v-deo.html Here is another video that might help ... ua-cam.com/video/AHcUPqxsz9Q/v-deo.htmlsi=iTQxkzMuntQ-bNle
Thanks for video - What's ball park cost of all replaced parts? Looking at '76 85v4 that's been sitting several years & about how much money worth investing - Motor seems complete & decent original shape - Wondering if $750.00 is too much?
thank you for sharing your tech support video. I have a 1970 85hp Johnson that i am losing power at full throttle on a load only. Can you possibly tell me why this is please?
Vincent… low power can be a bit tricky to diagnose but if your patient and willing to spend the time you can figure it out. Low power can be fuel related that might require a carb rebuild or ignition related where coils, wires, or even the power pack can be faulty. The first thing I do is check for a good strong spark that jumps a gap of at least 7/16” on all cylinders. Then check compression, you want at least 100 psi on each cylinder with no more than 10% difference between them. If you demonstrate that you have good spark and compression then you know your problem is fuel related. Check fuel lines and connections for leaks. Make sure the gas tank is vented and the fuel pump is working. Make sure the primer bulb gets hard and you have no air in the lines. If all is good then rebuild your carbs.
Mine has a DIY teltale on it, pees water strong and immediately after start but after running for a few minutes on idle it starts to overheat where you can’t leave your hand under teltale water or finger pressed on engine head without getting burned, where should I begin? Thanks I’m advance! I’m a handy newbie just need some guidance.
LMT - Adventures… I had the same problem with an 75 hp V4 (see video) ua-cam.com/video/CQw1izOvB0g/v-deo.html Make sure all cylinders have spark. If so, you might have a blockage in the water passages. Sometimes the water pump impeller breaks apart from age and gets brittle and then ends up inside the water passages of the power head.
wonderful video! learned alot about my motor here! thank you for posting it! where is the best place to get parts for this motor? i struggle to find them online alot. and the marine near me is just outrageously priced. also i found that my motor will burn impellers fast if i use muffs on the boat. i dont know if that help you or not. just thought id throw it out there!
Thanks Bryan, first let me say that you should never use muffs on these older motors only a barrel or the lake. The water pump impellers are high volume not high pressure types and require the leg be submerged in water above the pump. The best place I’ve found with the fastest delivery is www.marineengine.com the prices are not cheap but your getting the best quality and correct parts available.
and were do you get your parts on line for these types of motors? shops out here don't know and they all tell me to go with a 4 stroke witch just tells me they are not knowledgeable of this great 2 strokes.
Great video..love it,Hey i got a 63 evinrude 40 Big twin,cant get it out of gear,too start it.Its a model 40302,does that have electrict shift solenoild?
Dale Hayslip… you should see water coming out of the blubber holes almost immediately. It will be a must at first then as the motor heats up it will come out stronger. These motors do not have a tell tail, just the exhaust blubber holes. If you have any doubt that your engine is overheating and water is not circulating, you can use a laser thermometer to check the head temp. It shouldn’t be much over 140^F . Thanks for watching and commenting.
I have an 81 johnson 115 that runs great on the hose, but put it in water and it didnt even wanna run hardly, couldnt get it to stay running enought to even put in gear. I made sure carbs are clean, fresh gas, vent open on tank, bulb tight, fuel line no leaks, fuel pump is rebuilt and screen clean. Gonna change plugs and test compression and spark next, What else could cause this? anyone Know? thanks alot
Big Worm… sounds like you’ve covered just about everything. Is it hard to start even on the hose? If you have your carb bowls and air/mixture screws adjusted properly then you might want to take a look your reeds. It’s also possible you didn’t get the idle circuits clean enough.
Thank you for the thorough video! Ive never seen someone do a pressure test on the lower unit before :)

I believe I only spent about $350 on all the parts including the tuneup and water pump impeller.
Did you have any footage of the actual break down of the parts you have laid out in the end?? Amazing video by the way so helpful
13tayder…. The parts breakdown is in part 2. Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate your response.
