    It all sounded good but the BE OD through the EVH sounded pretty killer.

    I really think Ed's early tone was less gain than people think. Certainly less than his van Hagar era or modern tone. Even Diver Down - 1984 sound higher gain to me. First few albums have a smoother softer distortion, a lot of his tone came from the PAF humbucker in a strat body, giving it a brighter more trebly sound, combined with Ed's very hard pick attack that gives the impression of high gain but with more articulation and clarity. Plus he loved to play really damn loud. I really think the key to his early tone is all in the pick attack and a Vintage output humbucker.

    • @rangerdoc1029
      @rangerdoc1029 11 місяців тому

      Yes. Much of the distortion was the speakers being overdriven to the brink of destruction.
      Hell, Angus Young was playing JTM45s on early albums... All the distortion was actually the reverb speakers.
      Same for Metallica. People mistake volume for distortion.

    Too much noise suppression
    Eddies amps would be humming at an extreme volume
    And more feel & GAIN IS NEEDED FOR

    Wow Its been ages since I've watched these videos! I gotta say I've never really liked this sort of "very sweet" gain the 5150 had. It's like in the middle of the Marshall and the Soldano that he used. But I gotta say, I got the brown sound very easily (with a lot of different amps) with an MXR 10 band eq. It's kinda the holy grail of pedals to me.

    I don't mean to piss in your beer here but according to the official schematic, the EVH 5150III green channel is a Fender circuit with an additional gain stage. Blue channel leans more to his old school Marshall and red channel is near identical to the Peavey 5150 II. Great video!

    It's hard to compare when you're a half-step higher than the original, but nice comparison between the pedals and 5150 channels. Thank you.

    I am another brown obsessed player and my opinion you nailed it perfectly with the EVH clean and the BEOD pedal first run through with the pedal put it this way when I reached that point in the video 13:28 I stopped it that was perfection point for me so stopped at that point. Perfect representation of the brown sound in my opinion

    If you want the brown sound use what Ed used. Maestro Echoplex EP3 into a Marshall plexi into a 4x12 with Celestion 20 watt greenbacks. He split the signal with a load box to run one side wet and the other side dry. The Marshall was plugged into a Variac and run at 90 volts. The amp was also biased to be run at 90 volts. Don’t forget the Mxr flanger and Phase 90. The Echoplex preamp is a very important part of the sound that everybody seems to overlook.

    A lot of people forget, or don't know that Eddie's fingers and style have a lot to do with his brown sound and overall sound in general. You could know his licks note for note, play through his exact rig and not sound the same. It is his sound. Great video BTW.

    I have a magical '77 JMP 50w MKII Master Model. IMO the best sounding amp of the bunch only the silver jubilee can top it because they're basically the same amp. It might not have the gain but hit it with a tube screamer and it's epic tone

  • @duckydrummer6331

    Did Eddie actually invent the subtle echo slap you hear on most guitar players now days? Also, Eddie must have added the flange effect on Unchained after he recorded the main track because I've never heard him recreate that perfect up and down rythmic sweep live. Everyone I've ever heard play it, the sweep is always off. It never has that perfect rhythmic up and down sweep.

    • @FinalResonanceTV

    1. 5150 III Blue Channel
    2. BE-OD through the clean channel of the 5150 III
    But, then, the Marshalls in your other video probably beat these both ... the 2555 is a killer hard rock amp. Probably the best - without going crazy boutique, I guess ... and maybe even then, perhaps still more the 'classic' sound ...

    Good video, but I have one question. If you had the EVH head, wouldn't you be best and most honest to the drive tone to have just backed off the crunch channel lead and run an echoplex pre into it? Ed's tone just requires tubes, the pedal is decent, but glass gives you the proper breakup and compression. I find the pedal really dry, no squish or compression like the real amp.

Great sounds lots of choices in that wall behind you

  • @josephmonaco4503
    @josephmonaco4503 5 років тому +3

    Exactly correct. That amp and Eddies 4x12's with those 12" Celestion 20 watters make that tone, but
    You won't ever sound like the original player because that is just impossible. Just play it correct and you'll be good enough. You need the EVH cabs to sound closer.

      Finally, someone mentions their important point about the Speakers. Thank you! I've had a Mesa Lonestar for 10yrs and been trying to get back to the tone of my late '70's Marshall half-stack but it wasn't even close until I recently replaced the Black Shadow & EVM w/ a couple 25wt Celestions. Instantly transformed the to that soft yet crisp tone I missed. What I would consider the 'Brown Sound' at any volume.

    Eddy was talking about the sound of Alexes drum set when he was describing the brown sound. Not the sound of his amps. It is very well documented.

    • @FinalResonanceTV
      @FinalResonanceTV  5 років тому +3

      True, but it also has become a term for his sound regardless of why that was coined. People more or less call it that regardless of this misinterpretation. You will see people call it that and market it that way anyway. You can call it whatever, but the bottom line is I’m shooting for a version of that basic sound.

    • @francoisfavreau769
      @francoisfavreau769 2 роки тому +1

      First it's not EDDY and not Alexes and second it's not Alex drum set but his snare that sounds like beating wood where the BROWN sound expression comes from, Ed said:“I’ve always thought Alex’s snare drum sounds like he’s beating on a log” and he add “I want my guitar to sound like Al’s snare…..Warm, big and majestic.” and that's what he did so today most guitar players referre the Brown sound(Warm, organic and powerful) to EVH guitar sound

  • @justinjohnson1176
    @justinjohnson1176 7 років тому +15

    I had always head Eddie used a Variac to lower the voltage on the amp to achieve that brown sound. Don't know how true it is though.

    • @FinalResonanceTV
      @FinalResonanceTV  7 років тому +9

      Justin Johnson it's totally true! He dropped it to 97 Volts.

    • @davidyergensen4509
      @davidyergensen4509 6 років тому +12

      Justin Johnson - yes indeed. Ed used a Variac and dropped the voltage to 97 and 98. Although it's true that Ed first used the term 'Brown Sound' in reference to Alex's snare drum sound, he later began using that term to reference his guitar sound. A little known fact as to why he began using that term to reference his guitar sound was directly related to his use of the Variac. It is widely known that Ed often lied about his gear to throw people off. He used to tell people that he cranked the voltage and melted tubes all the time ...and that his use of the Variac would cause his amp to electrically "brown-out". This is what led him (and others) to incorrectly call it the brown sound.

    • @justfine77777

      On the 5150 the tone is pretty good. One thing I always liked about Ed’s sound, was that he always seemed to have good sustain.

    • @FinalResonanceTV
      @FinalResonanceTV  7 років тому +3

      97warlock ismyname true ... Eddie was an incredibly rehearsed player true. That's a huge part of it. I think the Brown Sound is a bench mark Modern High Gain Sound created by Eddie in 78 and this is where we are with it today. This video was meant to explore what you can get without a plexi and variac. Now I do get into my 77 JMP later in the Series and that's super close. Surprisingly Eddies EVH AMP is good, but way more Gain. I wanted people to have an opportunity to listen to all these amps and compare. The truth is... I would prefer the Marshall JMP if you want to match his 68 Plexi as close as possible. You can tell that in the later video and I say that. The Friedman BE-100 is the closest I have ever heard to Eddie's 68 Plexi.

  • @ijamsum
    @ijamsum 4 роки тому +1

    The so called brown sound is when the power tubes go into harmonic clipping at a overdriven state to produce a really great overdrive sound !
    When you cascade 12ax7 tubes in the preamp its the worst sounding clipping overdrive you can get , you have to put the master volume 7.5-10 to push the power tubes into OD !
    Marshall makes the amps bright sounding to have some highs when you overdrive the power tubes and that warm OD sound takes over !
    Negative feedback on the transformer can prevent the power tubes from being overdriven so the NF is low or has none !
    You cannot get the true brown sound adding bass , pedals cannot do what a el34 power tube can do at all either !
    Crank it up then dial in what the amp can do !
    Go see Bad Company for a true sound of power tube overdrive !

    Nice playing. I think the Friedman, although it doesn't sound exactly like a tube amp its your best bet for the brown sound in terms of tone and gain. Eddie didn't have much gain on those early VH albums. You can try other things such as tuning to Eb. It would get you much closer and you woudn't need much gain to pull out Eddie's stuff.

      Yip! Its really amazing how Frank Zappa had the original source tone of the Brown Sound( mid 70s?) You can clearly hear it on the Shuddup N' Play Your Guitar albums.

    When you say 3 ... notch 3 or 3o’clock - specifically on blue

    • @heyjarrod
      @heyjarrod 3 роки тому

      I think probably 3 o’clock, since the clock is what he appeared to be using as a reference for the other settings. Some awesome sounds, I gotta get me some of that! 🎸👍🏻

    I thought your first sound was closest to VH, a little reverb would put it even closer. The Friedman is a great sound too. It is kind of unique to itself. How do you like your Jubilee? That is one great amp!!!

    There is only so much you can do with your equipment, the sound ultimately comes from your hands and how you play.

    • @johnl2637
      @johnl2637 6 років тому +4

      Except even Eddie sounds bad and compressed now because of the equipment. It’s not all in the fingers or else Eddie sound would be like it used to which it’s not.

    • @snogglemonkey
      @snogglemonkey 6 років тому +5

      It all starts in the pick attack and fingers, but the amp can voice it or kill it. .

      @@johnl2637 you're a breath of fresh air. Talking about tone with some ppl can become a great big shitshow. If tone comes from a pick and the hands then why did Eddie sound completely different on 5150s than he did did on the marshalls? Finally somebody who knows, thank you sir👍

  • @zeppo20
    @zeppo20 7 років тому +2

    Brown Sound is in Eddie Van Halen hands, that´s why everybody´s are close to it.

    • @johnl2637
      @johnl2637 6 років тому +1

      Someone always says that. Anyone with an ear can hear the difference of Eddie vs his tone. More recently He sounds like himself but his sound is unrecognizable. It sounds like he picked up someone’ else’s amp and guitar. Even Eddie sounds bad because of the equipment he’s using.

    • @deanmlshredder
      @deanmlshredder 6 років тому

      John L well it's definitely a combination. But the pick angle, how heavily you pick and finger the strings makes a huge difference in the sound that comes out of the speakers especially on tube amps that are very dinynamic. But seems also to be the reason why nobody can get that dimebag tone. Guys will copy that dudes rig exactly and it just isn't the same and he was a solid state player almost until the end.

    It's Van Halen 1 sound you're trying to re-creat Ed has said in interviews when he referred to 'The Brown sound' he wasn't even talking about guitar. Non of these set ups sounds right.
