    Massively underrated film. It’s a really well made film. Extremely violent, but highly authentic to the source material. It’s not just Karl Urban, it’s the entire cast. Olivia Thirlby is great as Judge Anderson, and Lena Headey is very scary in her scared makeup.

      Same here I think this was the most legit depiction of Judge Dredd but unfortunately this franchise as described by Adi Shankar will always be in limbo as a lot of parties owns the rights for this and since it was a colossal bomb no one wants to do anything with it. This definitely is the best version of the character to date You can tell he is a force to be reckoned with. The final scene between him and villian Lena Headey Mama is one the best endings ever made capturing a more truer version of the comic character.

      1) It's comic genre (fan base) is limited somewhat compared to mainstream comics such as in the DCU & MCU
      2) They should've made a series first then when that had bedded it after around five seasons hit everyone with the movie!

    Agree with your criticism of current superhero films, Minty. Keep the focus on more earthbound "good vs bad" stories.
    I'd love to see Urban return as the character. These properties pass through so many hands, with each person leaving their own mark, what sometimes makes it onto film is barely recognisable. Not including the iconic eagle shoulder pads was the only minor disappointment.

    I LOVE this movie! The day in the life of a Judge was the best way to introduce us to two of the main characters. I was a big fan of Dredd when this movie came out but the advertising did push me away, especially the 3D BS, hate and avoid it, and I think initially it said it was only going to be released in 3D and it was only later I found out they were also showing it without the 3D. If only this was the first film released and not that Sly crap we got back in the 90s(only good thing about that movie was the music they ran in the trailer) I keep hoping for many sequels but if the people responsible for this aren't going to be doing it, kinda less interested, I want another passion project.

    I liked "Dredd" a lot as it reminded me of the block wars story lines. I did chuckle when I saw the "fatties" in the movie as that was such a funny story line in the comics. I always thought the cursed Earth story ark would have made a good movie. I have often wondered if so many would have been offended by the 1st movie if the helm was only off for the prison sequences. It is still a heresy but maybe forgivable.

    This is a massive underrated film and having grown up with 2000 AD and Judge Dredd I think this film does it justice (pardon the pun) It brings a gritty feel in a dystopian land and who needs fancy shoulder pads anyway. Not removing his helmet brings it true to the comic book style, only wish there was a sequel but then again could it pull off what the first film gave us. I do think there was a missed opportunity of bringing more 2000 AD charcters to the big screen or maybe in a style of The Ballad of Buster Scruggs where you had 6 different stories in a film.

  • @Mandrake42
    @Mandrake42 9 місяців тому +6

    As a HUGE fan of the Dredd comics I wasn't that bothered by the uniform changes, they made sense. What works on a drawn page is not necessarily practical on a real life set. Ditto for the changes to the lawmaster bikes. All of it kept the spirit of the comics while being real world practical. Urban nailed Dredd and I am glad he insisted on keeping the helmet on. I really cant stand the original with Stallone, despite being a Stallone fan, it just goes too much against the spirit of the comic which I had been a fain of for years before that film. The 2012 once really captured what Dredd should be and it would be a shame if we don't get more.

      @@eddysgaming9868 I mean in the comics even when his helmet of his face is conveniently in shadow. I remember one of the goofy one off stories "Judge Dredd in the Bath" he didn't even take his helmet off to bathe. Hilariously he also manages to arrest a perp without getting out of the bath.

    I saw this in the theater in 3D and it was awesome, it still holds up and there's no reason they couldn't make a sequel with the same actors and could be amazing. Especially with Urban's popularity in the last few years, and his age would work well with the sequel story.

  • @artboymoy
    @artboymoy 9 місяців тому +5

    I'm a fan of both movies. I don't think that Dredd was overlooked at all. Tons of people like it. Urban wanted to take it to Netflix for a series, which would have been cool. While Urban's Dredd is dead on for the character, the world and tone is really off from the comic and that's where I think 1995's Judge Dredd is more in line with that. Mega City One is a character in itself and Dredd is the straight man. Dredd is a very grounded action movie and I love that they introduced my gal, Cassandra Anderson. Thirby did an outstanding job going from the nervous rookie to the kick as Judge she would become. I liked the small scale of the film as a day in the life. Nothing wrong with that. I had hopes for Stallone's Dredd to do do the Apocalypse War as a sequel, with all it's death and destruction opening a portal to allow the Dark Judges to come through for a third movie. Aw well.
    I think if they do stories like Dredd where he's the dude walking into someone else's problem and making it his own like the Mad Max films there are plenty of stories to be told. For Dredd, it was very much about Cassandra Anderson, like Fury Road was about Furiosa.

    (Speaking as a lifelong devotee of 2000AD, with a collection which would make any geek’s eyes pop out) - I loved the Stallone Dredd, and went three times to see it with my late father in York. The problem is that it’s an “action film”; anybody who knows Dredd, or indeed any Brit stuff of the time 2000AD came out, is that Dredd is political satire with occasional violence - it was conceived as an opaque satire on authoritarianism. If anyone is interested in the fascist subtext to Dredd, please read Wagner’s serial “America”, in which Dredd is an absentee villain, determined to preserve the polity.

    And can we get a round of applause for the Paul Leonard-Morgan soundtrack ... a fantastic gritty industrial score !
    And Olivia Thirlby did a fantastic job as Judge Anderson. Her scenes throughout were great... but toward the end were just incredibly strong ! She played the rookie thrown in at the deep end and escaping with her head intact just perfectly ! I mean to stand up to your superior is daunting... but that superior being Judge Dredd ? ! HOLY F !
