Maldavius Figtree/Jason/PirateSoftware has been a malicious actor who griefed sims in Second Life, he had been a malicious bully of a CEO in EVE, he had been a malicious bully as a guild leader in Ashes of Creation.

I soured on Pirate Software when he made his stop killing games take, which grossly misrepresented the petition in a way that seemed very malicious (and spread misinformation that the petition has to struggle against to this day) and inserted a ton of personal biases into the discussion because he has a conflict on interest with his own live service projects. This is just another piece of evidence that he's an extremely selfish person that will throw anyone under the bus if he thinks he can improve his personal reputation with it.

PirateSoftware's behaviour is not in the least suprising if you watched him during his coverage of "Stop Killing Games". He either misunderstood or misconstrued the aims of SKG and when getting told that he was wrong he doubled and tripled down on his wrong interpretation. He also, instead of disagreeing with Ross in calm manner, insulted him with a comparision with a "greasy carsalesman" instead. I think this got so huge because PirateSoftware got semi-famous via wholesome UA-cam-Shorts and he developed a kind of "golden boy"-like reputation. However, this situation showed a complete different side of him and my guess is that most people who knew or knew of PirateSoftware were very surprised.
At this point everything would've blown over, it's just superficial drama in a video game after all, but PirateSoftware went mental boom for some reason and when you're this stubborn, arrogant and childish, people will absolutely keep challenging that behaviour. He brought this on himself.

I think the reasons why this completely blew out of proportion is first because Pirate's entire online persona is about him knowing so much and being so smart while once he is put to the test he's just not up to snuff. The second reason is that he isn't that small a content creator and even had one of the biggest WoW content creators ridding his d*ck during the drama, making everything worse instead of better. The third reason is that Pirate was talking so much smack before this event, attacking Lacari, smugly stating how he would do different from others, etc, and this all fed into the issue. From the very first moment where he casted the rank 3 blizzard before the third pack was even pulled it became very apparent that his plan was to use all of his mana and dip, he did not even look back because he had no intention to and wanted to make sure he had plausible reasons to let them die.

What I want to know is why NOBODY on this issue bothered to suggest "call for kite" being a much better and safer suggestion.
What's worse is "RUN RUN RUN! FIGHT! RUN! SALVAGEABLE! RUN!" is being excused by so many people putting their piece into this situation.
No sensible person would EVER try and stay to fight or run and fight. If kite call was not made and RUN RUN RUN call was made and shifted from Run to Fight repeatedly, you have NO business running with those people whatsoever. You shouldn't be running with them. That level of indecisiveness should NOT exist on a hardcore server.
The smartest thing anybody could have done was run and not look back until everybody is in a safe spot to regroup. The Druid kept pulling everything. Even IF Pirate stayed and used all his mana on blizzards to slow mobs, all that does is give the highest probability that more people would have died or a full wipe would happen. It takes a little over a second to cast blizzard. That slightly more than 1 second can go from a mage being safe to being in danger and getting killed if they don't have enough mana to blink. This is basic MMORPG logic.
The man is enemy number 1 to millions of people because people are ignoring the fact that the pulls were bad, the shot calling was bad and that accounts for almost the entire situation. Shot calling is literally the most important role in a game game. it holds the MOST responsibility. If you are indecisive, you prove yourself to be untrustworthy and if you call RUN RUN RUN! FIGHT! RUN! SALVAGEABLE! RUN! I'm GTFOing. You're on your own.
A lot of people could have done a lot of things in that situation. JUST RUNNING being one of those things and NOT PULLING MORE MOBS being another, but doing MORE only increases the chance of a full wipe. Because the act of "doing more" is what caused this to happen in the first place. The Druid is a prime example of that. The Druid tried to "do more" and ended up pulling more mobs. Blizzard has a pretty large AOE in tight spaces with mobs hanging out everywhere. Blizzard could have pulled another mob and that would have made things worse and Pirate would have gotten crucified for that.
There was no situation in this where Pirate would have gotten away without being public enemy number 1. The man has an ego the size of clouds and makes situations significantly worse, but, I feel that - in this case - is because of the result of stress and pressure of dealing with all of the hate he has been receiving and how few people in the guild tried to defend him. Nobody knows how they'd handle a situation like this under so much pressure on levels Pirate has been going through like they think they can.
Even the calmest and most logical people break from pressure.
But, the most important detail people want to ignore is that, literally everybody else fucked up hard enough to allow a situation like that to even happen. There was no way Pirate was coming out of this unscathed, so he listened to the RUN RUN RUN call. If listening to the RUN RUN RUN call was his only real fault, he played better than most of the party. It's just the excuses he came up with that really made things worse. Nobody is considering that the entire situation and all of the calls and actions made were beyond any and all reasoning and the only correct thing to do would have been to listen to the RUN RUN RUN call and not look back.
All of this could have been avoided if a kite call was made.

His arrogance is why I quickly stopped liking Piratesoftware
The break was when he went out of his way to go against Stop Killing Games twice. Purposefully misrepresenting the arguement and ignoring all the solutions to his own claims
The problem was: 'Companies turn off the servers and then shut the game down'
The solution was: 'If a company wants to shut down a game, they should be required add the means for people to host private servers, client side'
His stance was basically: 'Companies dont have infinite money and so cannot infinitely host servers'
which nobody denied but it had nothing to do with the issue and then he doubled down on that calling everyone who didn't agree with him morons, completely ignoring all the holes in his arguementation and the massive strawman he put up.
He is the embodiment of 'I'm all for criticism, unfortunately it's always wrong, because I cannot be wrong'

Seeing the Ashes of Creation raid clip of Pirate wiping his own raid, blaming others and when shown proof of it being him who did it, completele deflecting all blame...this was a couple weeks before the Dire Maul incident. Puts this whole thing into a more continuous timeline of where PS can simply do no wrong.
Also what really bugs me is him generalizing that everyone played bad, made mistakes and all of the examples are always missing 1 person from the group. The one that is often an afterthought for everyone in WoW it seems, someone to just enable them to have fun, the healer. What exactly was the bad plays and mistakes the healer in the group did that they deserved to get merced when the roach left them hanging? Not to mention if PS actually recalled their existence, that one argument presented at one point that using mana gem would draw agro is proven to be bullshit. The healer had all of the agro beyond the tank, because they actually kept doing their job, healing, which generates threat.

his game dev knowledge is cursory at best. for sarters, he kickstarted backed Heartbound in 2017 for $20k. he used to do patch updates every 6 months on the game, but since his rise in streaming popularity he has dialed back to once a year since about 2021-2022. he hasn't patched the game in almost a year at present.

the 2-3 hours he "developer streams" he constantly gets sidetracked by TTS and other things instead of focusing on his supposed "passion project" and he will likely refuse to admit that he is over it and got his bag finally. You can't cultivate this golden boy persona that can't do no wrong, constantly have to be right, talk down to others than get yourself in this situation where he 100% got tilted with the group and intentionally burned his mana to not help them. Gaslight, lie and deflect all blame without angering so many people. You can't double down, tripple down, quadruple down and not anger people who know your wrong. The gaslighting alone is annoying. Hopefully now that he's out of the group, is doing is own thing that this can all dial down for him but I'm 90% sure he learned nothing from this which is a shame.

There is more to it, than that. The situation was aggravated when Soda pretty much asked for a public apology, which most likely came down to Yama crying to Soda about it. I am basing that last part on how Yama did go to other streamer's to contest the conclusion that Yama did not agree with. And to be fair, Pirate did already conceded that mistakes were make on everyone, it is in the stream clips.

Best video on the situation I've seen.
Like you said in your video and like a lot of people pointed out by now: This drama is not about the game itself, but about a narcissist who publicly shows his unwillingness to account for his own mistakes and trying to deflect the blame on everyone else. This kind of behaviour is infuriating.
And Pirate himself did realize that he talked/lied himself into a corner, which you can actually see when watching from 10:00 onwards, as you point out in your video. He was quickly moving his cursor in the direction of the mana gem, which he at that moment realized he forgot to use (same with the mana robe I guess) and his brains initial, instinctive reaction was to use it now. But then he realized what he was saying ("nothing I could have done, look at my low mana") and instantly moved the mouse away from it and actually uses mana on Ice Barrier, although he was in no danger at all in that moment, just so he can say that he's oom. He said/did all this just because his narcissistic brain doesn't want to admit a mistake. This scene alone tells you everything you need to know about Pirates character. And this is just one aspect of the whole situation, his intentional use of the 1-HP-Overlay and his shittalking other mages/players and everything else he said/did in his narcissism was just piling up and now its all coming down on him, rightfully so.
Pirate is constantly talking out of his ass and this time it caught up to him. In an older clip, when playing Ashes of Creation, he said to another player that "if you are being a bitch then people will come down on you". Pirate Software is a clown and I lost all respect for him.

Then Yamato replied _”I dunno frostnova, something!”_ - again, totally rational. Actually instructive and very reasonable thing to ask from your mage.
Pirate actually threw the first sassy comment back.
The normal, rational response is _“Oh I thought you said run, I thought we were running.”_
_“What do you want me to do about it?”_ Is objectively sassy.
Yamatos question was totally valid. Where _was_ he going? A frostnova _would_ have been perfect.

Granted some people will call this "banter" between "friends", notice how many other people saw that as "wtf is wrong with him? can't he let vedal and co. enjoy?". Nope, he dislikes it. You might want to show some friends who are gamers or not preferably, the clip of the drama for WoW concerning Thor, which i did to some of mine, who don't play at all and they said the same thing, "It seems like this guy doesn't take responsibility and always thinks he's right", "he has this condescending tone or allure when talking to people, but he tries to hide it with good wording". Thing is, the guy is like that irl too but is good at hiding it although it seems to be getting out more often now. Btw for context, check some of the clips and videos for Ashes of Creation and how he reacts to rivalry on the server, and this was before the WoW drama. Last i saw, he was copyright striking people who are sharing a clip of him wiping his raid in AoC and he had a meltdown because he didn't again take accountability.

If he's willing to abandon his friends so quickly and remorselessly people are going to wonder what else he'll do in a more serious situation. I dunno if it gets mentioned, But one of the things that rubs me VERY wrong about this whole thing is that Pirate adamantly insisted he had NO mana for like 3 straight days, Doubling, tripling, quadrupling, quintupling down and not once addressing the mana gem or robe despite everyone bringing it up (and banning thousands over bringing it up), And then he finally addresses their existence, but it's to say "I didn't feel I could do anything with the resources I had at my disposal". Which is a funny way of saying, yet again, "I had no mana".
And that's before mentioning the max rank blizzard he wasted nearly entirely- He started casting then cancelled after like a second before turning around and booking it. He could've done so many other things there, but he did the one thing that would nuke the remainder of his mana before running. And later makes the deliberate choice to not use his robe or gem, and instead cast a frost barrier and blinked away again which drained his somewhat regenerated mana (while he's nowhere near any enemies, mind you.)
Every time he talks about mana in that clip, It's IMMEDIATELY or shortly after draining his mana back down to near 0 with some spell,
10:15 Blinks, back to 0, "What are you talking about why am I walking? Look at my mana. Do you see my mana? What am I supposed to do for you?" ; Had he simply turned around here and waited a few seconds, he would've had enough mana for rank 1 frost nova or blizzard even without gem/robe, He would've saved the priest. who died.
11:00 Stops, turns around, Almost clicks ruby, Ponders for a few seconds, doesn't, OOMs himself, Again, with a barrier.
You cut it off just before, but, He then runs a few feet towards the group, Stops, turns around and runs again and says something about evocation being on cooldown while blinking away his mana AGAIN. He was halfway to the group with the mana at his fingertips for frost nova or rank 1 blizz. At this point, had he engaged, he could've saved the druid that died.
Like, Jesus. He could've had like 4-5k mana between all the mana wasted on casting useless spells (blinking even further away when already WELL out of range, frost barrier with no enemies near, gem, robe, max level blizzards cast and then cancelled)... But even before that, even with "no mana" he could've been casting cheap CC spells to aid the retreat here and there, from a very safe distance, without ever being at risk himself. Because mage, ESPECIALLY frost mage, is THE survival class that can save messy situations better than any other. They can CC applicable targets for days and just kite them without ever getting in range when done well. He was never in any meaningful danger despite being 1hp, Because with rank 1 spells he wouldn't have pulled aggro off the tank, and that trash has no AOE damage, AND he was far ahead of the group in the least vulnerable position. If he just stopped and came back right at the start, they could've cleaned up everything just fine, Or at least retreated together safely.
TL;DR: Even. Without. The gem or robe... Even after all his wasting mana... He could have saved both of them with a few cheap spells cast from a safe distance posing no risk to himself. He chose, Deliberately CHOSE, not to do so. Multiple times throughout that scenario, He stopped, thought about it, decided "Nah", and left. He chose himself, Not the team. Deliberately. It was not a 'mistake', It was a calculated decision. And he won't admit to that deliberacy. He's doubled down, over and over, Changing goal posts and reasons and defenses trying to dodge away from all the blame. And that is why everyone is upset with him.

28:25 "Deflect away from the malice allegations", See above. He has not admitted to his misuse After the run call.. Just before it. IMO, as outlined in the original comment I keep replying to, The actions during the retreat were deliberate. He was so far out of danger that there is no way they WERENT deliberate. He literally stops and thinks about his actions more than once, while so far away from danger that he could just walk the rest of the way out without casting another spell, then doubles down on spending mana to seem like he has no mana. Can we prove it was 'Malicious'? Perhaps not. But deliberate? I think that's a fair call to make, Seeing how he stops, thinks, and makes a decision to continue retreating and expending mana on purpose while doing so, not once, but twice, while under no duress or threat from an enemy.

He wasn't at 1hp, He was at 100% HP the entire time, not even 1 hp missing. So it's not like he was even at risk of being one tapped if he stayed back with the group to support them. That makes all of the above even more inexcusable, imo.

That last clip was so fking funny, the fact he desperately tries to dps and then after just sits there got me so hard, I can imagine he felt so bad. But about pirate and the situation I think the reason he didn't really respond to the stay and fight call was it wasn't the clearest call "this is salvageable" isn't like "stay and fight, we can win, don't run" After calling "run run run run" if I was making a call to do the complete opposite in any game I would be loud and clear.
IT was also RIGHT after he was calling him out/having ago at pirate saying/asking why he is running, when in pirates mind he makes perfect sense to be doing it at that time as the first time anyone said anything about staying and fighting was after this (of course I think it makes more sense to stay somewhat near to the team trying to peel/slow to help) and it looks like pirate then realises that the call to stay and fight was OR might of been made, again wasn't the clearest, that's when you see him turning around and getting ready to go back in, to me it also looked like when he realised he had the mana crystal (he hovers over/near it) then they say run again and to me personally when he does like a little laugh and runs out, it seems like he is thinking that this is just a shit show that's all over the place and doesn't want to get involved.
It felt like at first he was just being defensive after basically being blamed for everything, I think yamato was acting/talking like a bit of a dick to be honest and felt like he was blaming pirate for the whole thing EVEN before the first person even died, while watching his pov he did nothing, even less then pirate in the situation, I don't think he should be getting off scot free because instead of running he just stood close by watching his team get bent over lmao. But it continued for multiple days which is so weird and crazy to me that I don't understand and escalated so much.
One thing I'm still unsure of is if its lies or just being wrong, as when he says he couldn't of done anything more or other things like that, its only a lie IF he knows he could have done more but doesn't want to admit it, and watching him play a bit i didn't know weather he was good enough to know to be honest, seems like anyone who has played that long should know, but ive met plenty of people who prove otherwise.
Great video, well covered, I love the drawing showing what happened and how, the timeline of events, a very fair and reasonable take on the situation.

    • @Carinail
      @Carinail 12 днів тому

      Basically this. ^^
People piss and whine and bitch and moan for minutes to hours about how bad pirate was in this situation for not doing MORE when he was LOW (technically not out, but it's easy to forget things in a panic) on resources, yet the person that blamed him cast literally exactly 1 spell the entire time, which had zero effect, and he had literally full health full energy and EVERY cooldown available. He had everything he could ever want/use and used 1 ability that had no effect, CC or Damage. And it's not his fault for panicking and doing nothing. Nor is it pirate's.
Well then they go "well, it was his ATTITUDE! Not accepting responsibility!" or "Attitude" As if that same rogue that did literally 0 once the pull went bad isn't also the rogue that called the "run run run run run run run run!!" then couldn't decide between running and "salvaging" without saying "turn and fight", who outright blamed pirate entirely and when told something he objectively did wrong (calling a run then going back on that in a guild where the rules were literally "run means every man for himself run", said "I'm not the shotcaller, I'm a noob" despite literally having been calling the shots. Man, sounds like not accepting responsibility. And that's not to mention that the druid was the one who pulled, and the tank was the one who's route made the mistake a possibility.
So basically, no matter where in the pull you think the fault actually happened, pirate isn't the most at fault. Before the pull? Tank. Pulling? Druid. During the pull for not doing anything? Rogue. Not accepting responsibility? Rogue.
It's a hilarious passing of the buck witchhunt that I can only assume actually worked because the rogue started assigning blame first. And just to be clear, I don't think the rogues at blame for doing nothing. People panic. I'm hesitant to assign full blame for the horrific calls. I think the group waiting around for EIGHT SECONDS (I counted) for the mobs to catch up with them is at fault, and so whoever's actions you think led to that (the tank's movement and body language, the rogue's calls, etc), that's who I assign the blame. And whoever that is... That's fine, shit happens.
This whole event has been the most childish, facts be damned we just hate you mob I've ever seen. I can only assume it's similar to the MrBeast thing where when someone is popular, they have a ton of haters, so as soon as there's any straw to pull at to have a "reason" to hate them it's jumped on, facts be damned.

    2. deaths in hardcore, no matter what level of play, are part of the regular experience. There is no controversy. Everyone knows what they are signing up to, including sub optimal play by the players you are playing with. NOBODY plays perfectly 24/7.
    3. I've played WoW for 2 decades, even in non-hardcore, the moment anyone says RUN, all bets are off, it's a "save your self at all costs" call. There is no ambiguity about this. Also, calling RUN is a last ditch effort as it ALWAYS causes chaos. Never an exception. You don't call run and then change your mind afterwards. I've seen this so many times in 20 years that the outcome was absolutely predictable the moment they said the word. Anyone suggesting that there was some obligation after that call doesn't understand the game or its culture.

With respect I think your first take on the situation was the best unbiased opinion. There is the human element that you are forgetting, and I feel you fell victim to that as well. With respect of you talking about how it is interpreted by Pirate attacking everyone in the guild as a whole, including yourself, which I would feel the same. Part of the same human element is Yama's conduct after it concluded. Considering that he (Yama) went to other streamer's channels to argue the conclusion that the other streamer came up with, the tank was the first one to screw up. Because of that, it can be safely concluded behind the scenes Yama was crying to as many people that would listen, and Soda allowed it to go on and aggravated the situation by trying to get a public apology from Pirate. But in the end you are correct it didn't have to happen, and Pirate just had to say what you said (retro spec there was more I could have done, my mind just shut his voice out, etc.) but it also could have stopped at any point before that.

Honestly I find this situation kind of weird because there are dozens of videos trying to analyze PirateSoftware's gameplay but no one makes a deepdive on how the others played, especially on Yamato. From the moment he calls "run run run run run" he uses no more skills, instead he just yells at people and immediately pins the blame on Pirate before anything ever happened.
Someone said that Pirate isn't a Mage but a glorified Shadow Priest, If that's true then Yamato isn't a Rogue but a glorified Cameraman. Once you realize this you can quickly notice that he just fakes caring about everyone else "Ozy are you okay", he is literally watching him, there is nothing happening at that point. They use a dummy which distracts the mobs and that's the perfect opportunity to hit tail and get out of the dungeon (it's close to the entrance), but instead Yamato calls people back. However he himself doesn't hit the mobs, but positions himself at every moment as someone filming a movie and doesn't lift a finger to help. Just like a party magician performing a trick to the audience he weaved the blame on Pirate and everyone bought on it. He had all the tools to help just as much and they had plenty of time to run and survive. As much as pirate was a terrible mage, all the deaths are on Yamato for creating the chaos that ensued. If you check Pirate's VODs you can see that he previously did the same dungeon with a different party and there were no hurdles, they even used the aggro resets, cleared the deadly packs and he played his mage role perfectly.

One thing I feel, too many ignore is just how deadly some of the mobs are in this dungeon. I have been one hit by the brutes on a hunter, while the tank is supposed to have aggro. I have done this dungeon solo as a hunter so many times, that I won't blame someone for not going into a pack to frost nova mobs to save others in HC. Yes he could have used a rank 1 blizzard. But when you have played retail for so many years, and you go to classic, you will forget that ranked spells are a thing, especially in high stress situations like this.
Also saying that you couldn't do any more while still being stressed about the situation, is understandable. Also he is saying that he didn't feel like he could help anyone. Yes objectively he could have. But that's not what he is saying, he is pointing to his subjective opinion. For example, I could probably do AOE farming in HC, that is an objective statement, but I don't feel like I could do that.
I haven't seen a direct provable lie from Pirate. Most of it is him thinking he is around 40% mana when he was at 60%. But all that might mean is that he didn't pay attention to his mana as much as he should have. Language is important. When someone says something, you cant read meanings that might not be there in the first place.
Also you say that its a mages job to bail other people out when they make a mistake. I disagree, It something a mage can do if skilled enough but its not their job. It would mean the sole responsibility for the survival of the group is on the mage. The vast majority of players cant do these plays in high risk situations. These types of things are stuff you learn if you do stuff like AOE farming or soloing dungeons. Not regular gameplay. I think Pirate is just an average player. Most of the ones I have seen talk about this stuff are higher skilled players. Also grubby is better than most players by far. If you are good at one game you will be able to get good at another game fast.

The bans were probably more about spamming chat during a time where everyone knows he is being harassed (This doesn't count as sharing your opinion, it's dogpiling and ruining his stream, the fact it's 10,000 accounts is probably evidence of that alone but he did make it sound more serious than that). I'd also preference him saying bad things about the guild doesn't extend to every single person, i think it was stupid for him to say things about the guild but i've seen many takes just berating pirate while he's experiencing a good amount of abuse so he can feel negatively about that.
I might be completely wrong but i think Yamato got to pirate and he shut down. He knows how to save everyone, i'd imagine he'd have done more. I think he got annoyed, dropped the ball and then listened to Yamato afterwards just blame him. I dont think pirate even had proper time to say he messed up before they were turning it on him, was never about accountability was about blame.

There's nothing wrong with panicking or making mistakes, it's not about that, but how you move on from the situation, hash things out and bury the hatchet.
