Ford didn't shoot the arab swordsman in Raiders because he hurt his back. He did it because he, like the entire cast and crew were suffering from essnetially dysentery from local food and wanted the shoot to be over.
@@BenLaurenceso we should not correct a mistake he made and just let the misinformation continue unhindered? I took a hot girl on our first date to see Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. 15 years later we're married with kids, so it's always going to have a special place in my heart... even if it is a bit crap.
The two people in this movie who look like they’re consistently having fun are John Hurt and Cate Blanchett. Hurt is playing the kooky, out-of-it Oxley to a T, and Blanchett balances the smarminess of past Indy villains with her own brand of intimidation.
I'd argue Ray Winstone was a worthwhile addition to things. All his issue is is that his character just isn't very consistence, but as far as he goes, he was a great choice.
As a teen, with few things that I remebered From The First 3 movies (Id watch them but not giving much atention as a kid) I really enjoyed the movie and considered a pretty decent one. I would Go Far - is not Just better than most action movies Of nowdays but better than some movies Of Its time. Visually is much more compeling than a bunch Of movies that where heavy CGI based like the Star Wars prequels and some movies that came after.
Yeah, but you can laugh at irl car crashes as well, doesn't really mean you should. Honestly with some adaptation and yo be quite honest a whole heap less of George it could have been a good movie.
This is a really good analysis. He tells the story of how the film came about, acknowledges the good and the bad, and says how he thinks it holds up compared to other movies. Awesome.
I loved that, before the title was revealed, Harrison Ford was going around telling interviewers it was called 'Indiana Jones and the Orb of the Mer-Man Prince'.
I've always liked Crystal Skull. I liked seeing Indy and Marion back together and, with Mutt, working together as a family. Shia was good in this, and had good chemistry with both Harrison and Karen. I saw Dial of Destiny today and, while I didn't hate it I think I like CS more simply because we get more of Indy and Marion together. When DOD comes out on DVD I might watch all 5. There's something to enjoy in all of them.
It was good.. as an average independent adventure movie... it sucks however as an Indiana Jones... but then leave it to Kathleen Kennedy to fuck things up even durther with Indiana Jones 5.
This isn't Twilight or some crap TV show.. Fans don't care about who is married to whom. If that is why you like these moveis, you ar ein the wrong genre.
I agree dude. Everyone has such strong harsh opinions, but at rhe end of the day. An Indy movie is better than the average blockbuster. Some are near perfect and others are just fun enough! That's good for me.
15:41 - Actually, Harrison had diarrhea and that's why they changed the scene. He hurt his back in Temple of Doom and resorting to re-framing the fight scene with his stunt double, saving the close-ups for another day. Brilliant flexible filmmaking! Great essay btw, love your use of clips, the Planes, Trains & Automobiles one really got me hahaha
You could read Indy not realising who Mutt's mother is as Indy not wanting to think of himself as a bad/absent father so he 'refuses' to make the connection. He likely never wanted to be a bad father and generally sees himself as a good man, so by admitting he likely had a kid that he ignored/avoided (even if un-intentionally) might have been too much of a blow to his ego. However, in the film, it really wasn't handled that way and there is no indication the writers intended to go down that path.
or you could just take his "there were a lot of marry's" as fact. He has always been good at solving ancient puzzles. He's always been bad with releationships. he couldn't even figure out the girl was using him in Last Crusade.
@🔥striker "all false"? Then what in the world do you mean by "this"? If everything OP said was false... huh? I'll give you credit for saying more than just "wrong" but you might as well commit & speak your mind.
I actually loved KOTCS... I just appreciate it for what it is... another chapter in the story of the life of indiana jones, and with all cold war and roswell of that era it actually fit for the time that had passed since LC...
I was always deeply impressed that even after 1989 there was an Indiana Jones story that kept the spirit of the original trilogy, while still being unique, and even managing to really hold up to this very day. That of course, was Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis PC game. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is also a thing that exists.
Like with the Thrawn Trilogy for Star Wars, it's baffling to me that these people didn't just do the easiest thing. Which was to adapt something that was already good. Yes, often times the easy thing isn't the best thing. But since Lucas didn't really want to do an Indy movie for over a decade and Disney just wanted a cash grab with Star Wars...why not? But in both these cases, you saw the people in charge insisting they be the only ones who could do it, just for the sake of controlling it.
@@maxis2k i don't even think disney wanted indy. they just couldn't get Harrison without it. My bet is that harrison will regret making this last movie. he has said he'll always make another indy movie given the chance though.
I actually enjoy Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. It’s not the best in the franchise, but it’s ok the same spirit regarding the 1930s B-Movie serials that the other three are inspired by as well as having the religious aspects in the film as well. Regarding the nuclear survival in a lead lined fridge, Indy has survived a lot of things in the first three where he should have died or moments that are a bit out there, such as ghosts that will kill you when opening the Ark all as long as you don’t open your eyes and look at the Ark, falling out of an airplane in a inflatable raft and being fine and centuries old knight guarding the Holy Grail. When Indiana Jones 4 continues with the unrealistic stuff seen in the previous films, people get upset, despite the other films not being very realistic in various parts the first place.
Watching them ride off into the sunset at the end of The Last Crusade was the perfect ending to the series. You know there would be more adventures for the characters but we just wouldn't see them except in our imaginations.
Yaaaawwwwnnnn..... Every true Indy fan KNEW they were all contracted for more films so ones lack of basic knowledge doesn't trump the FACT everybody who'd payed attention knew there'd be more...
People put to much weight on Indiana Jones being a film series rather than a collection of films that aren’t meant to tell a connecting story. Indiana Jones is not Star Wars. They are stand alone films that happen to feature the same character. Everyone knows they’re inspired by adventure serials but I don’t think many of you actually internalize what that means. Indiana Jones was never meant to have a clean send off where his story is wrapped up in a nice little bow. There will always be a next episode.
...guess you never heard of James Bond...or Planet of the Apes...or George Lucas' 9 or (depending on the day) 12 part Star Wars saga...or the 6 original Star Trek movies...or...
This film, like many other sequels, is little more than a money grab. Any fan of the series who sees anything else is struggling to maintain the suspension of disbelief.
The one thing I really didn't like in Crystal Skull is Indy easily getting out of the refrigerator. Those things had latches that only opened from the outside. When I was a kid in the 1960's, they were always warning kids not to play in abandoned refrigerators. Kids would lock themselves in, and never get out. It's the reason modern fridges are held shut with magnets instead of a latch.
I'm probably in the minority, but I had no problem with "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull." It may not be strong story wise, but Harrison Ford was still great as an older Indiana Jones.
I never saw it, for that matter I haven't seen the classic ones all the way through, but I know this one looked stupid to me, until a friend explained that Indiana Jones is about pulp 30s stories, so naturally a few decades hence, we should be doing pulp 50s sci-fi stories. and after that, I accepted it. so I guess the new one should be all 60s James Bond flavored? Coming full circle since that was what they wanted to make in the first place haha
I really like the opening half of Crystal Skull. I agree with your analysis. It starts off pretty good. The relationship between Indy and Mutt is good to start off. This movie reminds me of Hook, another Spielberg movie that starts off great in the first half, but falls apart over the second half.
Out of all the moments in that film, that felt like John Wick falling out of a four story building and just walking it off to me. It just feels like the character for a single instant turned off fall damage, and while I love the sequence, I always laugh as the fridge bounces down the hill like four times.
I know that the filmmakers approached John Rhys-Davies and Sean Connery to appear. Both said no, Rhys-Davies as he felt the part was too small to be meaningful and Connery because he was retired. Not sure if Kate Capshaw or Ke Huy Quan were asked, though Capshaw at least would be an easy person to get if she was going to be in it, given that she's married to Spielberg.
As polarizing and controversial as the film is, I never really hated it. Even when I watched it for the first time ten years after its original release, I didn't think it was as bad as many people build it up to be in the decade leading up to my first viewing.
I love and appreciate this movie even more after seeing Dial of Destiny. Still some parts and the villain isn’t the best but it’s a fun movie that has the feel of Indiana Jones! Mutt is actually not a bad sidekick and character.
I genuinely loved this film, and still do, and never got the extreme hate it got. I love that it wasn't the Nazis again and I love the elements of the Red Scare and sci-fi of the 50s. I can see why people didn't like it but the ending was great imo and I felt it was a good film in general.
It was at least better than Dial of Destiny. But old Indy is just something that robs me of the whole appeal of these movies. Indy is a cool mysterious action guy that we wish we could be. At no point during Crystal Skull did I ever want to be like him.
First half is really good, like he mentions in the video. Like you said, some great 1950s settings and the Soviets being the baddies...that's all terrific stuff, and then halfway through *POOF* all of that goes out the window.
The “Red Scare” wasn’t a scare. It was a legit concern that was proven to be true once Russia declassified Soviet era documents in the 1990’s. Look up the Venona Papers.
@@benbeesley4277Soviets or other commies being the bad guys in “Dial of Destiny” would’ve made more sense and historically relevant than digging up the Nazis as villains again.
Terrific as always. Love how thoroughly researched and thought our your videos are and this one is no different. Rewatched Crystal Skull a couple days ago after having not seen it since 2008 and my feelings had not changed. The first half of the movie is really solid and then suddenly, at exactly the half way mark (right when Marion appears), there's a super noticeable downshift in quality and the movie feels completely different. Your observations definitely helped confirm a lot of the issues I had with the movie, mostly in its second half; and now knowing how many different rewrites there were and how bits and pieces were sampled from each one, definitely helps explain why things became such a mess.
In addition to what Matt laid out and what you observed--the movie shifts from a lot of outdoor, real locations to more sets and CG in the second half. The quicksand scene couldn't look more like a soundstage if they tried.
I'm gonna say it: I loved Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Sure, maybe it was a part of my childhood, but to this day, it still has a soft spot in my heart.
I just remember wanting to watch this movie so badly. And then when i finally got a chance to see it the entire movie i was just trying soooo hard to convince myself that i was enjoying it.
It's fitting that you chatted about Speilberg & Lucas' overreliance on CGI in this video since you covered BASEketball on your podcast. What does that have to do with anything? Well, back in the early 2000's when those directors used digital effects to "remaster" their older films, Spielberg was planning on doing it for the Indiana Jones films. It wasn't until Trey & Matt made that South Park episode critiquing this practice that it convinced him not to go through with the plan. He even sent those two a letter after the episodes aired, even if Trey & Matt interpreted it to be a backhanded compliment. That said, they have gone on record stating that it's one of their proudest achievements, along with going to the Oscars in dresses.
I literally just referenced today how Spielberg replaced the guns of the FBI with walkie talkies in ET but had forgotten he was planning to go back and do "special edition" digital changes to the Indy trilogy. I remember that episode but had no idea it truly impacted Spielberg's decision. Thank god for that.
Lucas proved that he really was a trend setter, while Spielberg actually listens to criticisms and Lucas just buries his head in his money and ignores it.
I saw this movie in the theater back in 2008 and I loved that movie because it got me into Indiana Jones and I will always defend this film because it is a spectacular piece of cinema
I saw this movie in theaters in 2008, and I loved it then, and I’ve always loved it, I like the 1950s B-movie inspiration, I like the action sequences, and I like seeing Indy ending up with Marion and getting married and a happy ending
By coincidence I am watching Kingdom of the Crystal Skull on TV at the moment, I hated this film when it 1st came out but I have come to appreciate it over the years, It certainly has its problems and as said in this video it is very much a film of 2 halves. It's a shame because it just seems it would not have taken much to have made it pretty good just change a few details here and there.
the cinematography more consistent with the movies this fourth film is inspired by would have made a huge difference I think, maybe making it more palatable
Really great video. Loved the editing of the Connery slap. Man, I remember going to see Crystal Skull with my kids on opening day. The moment that CGI groundhog showed up you knew the film was in trouble. "Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should..." or words to that effect
I saw Crystal Skull once in the theaters and that was it. All of the points that you made like the movie feeling like 2 different films, them trying to hide the Marion reveal, the interdimensional beings with the flying saucer, etc was exactly why it felt like a fever dream rather than an Indy movie. Even Spielberg wasn't sure about it. I thought Dial of Destiny turned out much better, going with the formula that worked in the first 3 movies. Was it perfect? No, but it had a lot of great moments.
1:05 I never understood this mindset. "I have to watch it out of obligation" No you don't. Don't be a brand slave. If it ends with 3 for you, don't even acknowledge 4. I do the exact same thing with Mad Max. You're gonna be hurting if you force yourself to watch 5 when marathoning when that flop finally comes out. You have no idea how bad it's going to be.
The tank chase in Last Crusade was amazing except for the part where Indy's shoulder bag strap - which he wears UNDER his jacket - somehow got caught around the blown out side turret.
Haven’t watched the video yet, but just wanted to comment on this channel. The way “Hats Off” narrates and speaks on the media that he uploads, you can tell, and appreciate, his love and connection to them. Underrated channel. Love the John Hughes and John Candy coverage and tributes. I truly have enjoyed watching his audience grow. Well deserved.
I may be different in this opinion, but my order of favoritism is 1) Raiders 2) Skull 3) Crusade 4) Doom Last Crusade was the first one I saw, but I watched the rest in 2008, when Crystal Skull came out. I enjoyed that they followed up with Marion's story and that they had a son together. Some of my friends even really liked the movie when it came out.
I think kingdom is super underrated. It doesn’t feel out of place for me since I find temple a little overrated. Crystal skull ends Indy’s story in a satisfying albeit messy adventure. There’s a lot to love and it feels like a true concluding chapter.
12:00 I always assumed that, the Skull projected a message to Indy saying that Oxley’s mind will be saved should he deliver the skull back to Akator. Then you might ask “well why DOESNT Indy tell the group that’s what he’s doing then if that’s the case?” I guess it’s more of a FEELING than straight up “oh this’ll solve everything” Could also be that Indy knows if they hold on to the skull to keep it away from the Russians they’ll just hunt him and those closest to him incessantly And no WAY they’re just going to let the KGB get the skull willingly and attempt to get any sort of power that they’ve clearly seen is NOTHING of this earth and clearly can’t be countered.
Okay, back in 2005-2006, cgi _was_ the "innovative way." I believe it was in 2007 or 08 that ILM's practical model shop essentially went out of business and closed down. Think about it. Avatar came out in 2009. In 2009, cgi was still being used to promote movies, and still helped to sell tickets as a new innovative technology.
Very informative and well made video. So many AI and long running, repetitive videos now, that yours really stand out as a labor of cinematic love. You got my subscription!
I really enjoyed crystal skull. Even if it wasn't as good as the originals it was still really good. Much like the star wars prequels. Just because they didn't measure up to the original trilogy doesn't mean they were bad movies. It's like saying because your dad was 7 feet tall that being 6'5 makes you short.
Or it's like saying that bad and lazy movies that are made wthout a fully fleshed out story are as good as movies that came out decades earlier and were made by talented people. Same same.
watching this as a kid back in the day i think i came away with the same thoughts as you. i remember enjoying the first half of the film way more. though i will also say that kid me found the man eating ants scene to be the scariest death in the series for me.
I think the problem is time. Studios give filmmakers unrealistic deadlines so they don’t have time to film things old school. I definitely think that crystal skull would be so much better received if it was mostly practical including the alien. They could have made a really creepy looking animatronic but instead it just looks cartoony. Dial of Destiny didnt rely on too much cgi like skull… it was a lot more practical and I enjoyed it a lot for that reason
The whole practical vs CGI thing is an interesting conundrum really. Practical effects are more charming and likeable precisely because of their limitations and the inventiveness required to overcome them. Nowadays CGI can do anything, so the limits no longer exist. So if a modern movie committed to using practical effects and no CGI it would be deliberately handicapping itself, which seems fundamentally at odds with the very spirit of practical effects in which new tricks and techniques are constantly being sought after. It would be like travelling across America on horseback when you could just take a plane - impressive, but pointless. When limitations are arbitrarily self-imposed they just feel fake.
I have seen the latest Indiana Jones movie. I would rather watch Kingdom of the Crystal again. Rather than see Indiana Jones mostly running away from danger.
This is great insight into the production of Indy 4. It makes total sense. I always defend the first hour as a really decent movie. After that hour mark, it’s a lot harder to get behind.
Ok so I saw Dial at the cinemas today - not much to say. It was a movie. Thought I’d give Kingdom a first try back at home and WOW. Difference is so apparent - This movie is so much more fun! Really enjoyed despite its flaws.
I'll still take Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull (aka Indy 4) over a lot of other 4th films in a franchine (such as Batman & Robin, Halloween Ends, Jaws The Revenge, Home Alone 4, Critters 4, The Next Karate Kid, Trancers 4: Jack Of Swords, Superman IV: The Quest For Peace, The Matrix Resurrections, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Dark Phoenix, The Crow: Wicked Prayer, Thor: Love & Thunder, Terminator: Salvation, Men In Black International, Bloodsport 4: The Dark Kumite, Prom Night IV: Deliver Us from Evil, Spy Kids: All The Time In The World, Wild Things: Foursome, Alien Resurrection, Deathstalker IV: Match of Titans, Silent Night Deadly Night 4: The Initiation, Return Of The Living Dead IV: Necropolis, Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV, Vegas Vacation, Bourne Legacy, The Cutting Edge: Fire and Ice, The Dirty Dozen: The Fatal Mission, Smokey & The Bandit IV: Bandit Goes Country, Midnight Run: For Your Life, The Concorde: Airport '79, The Stepford Husbands, Exorcist IV: The Beginning/Dominion: Prequel To The Exorcist, SEAL Team 8: Behind Enemy Lines, Poison Ivy 4: The Secret Society, Death Race: Beyond Anarchy, Omen IV: The Awakening, Meatballs 4, K-9: P.I., Ghoulies IV, Killjoy Goes to Hell, Alvin & The Chipmunks: The Road Chip, Species IV: The Awakening, Honey: Rise Up & Dance, House IV, A Dennis The Menace Christmas, Parent Trap: Hawaiian Honeymoon, Iron Eagle IV: On The Attack, Revenge Of The Nerds IV: Nerds In Love, Killer Tomatoes Eat France, Wishmaster 4: The Prophecy Fulfilled & Zombi 4 - to name a few awful 😝 4th entries in my opinion)....✌️
I feel so validated. I have literally used this video's exact same argument to defend the fridge scene for years. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull has its issues, but the nuclear bomb sequence has always been one of its high points for me.
I hadn't seen any Indiana Jones films until I was in my early 20's when I bought the complete bluray set for my father, and had a marathon. I loved all 4 equally. With 3 being my favorite.
Just watched Indy5, I had fun and can't really complain to be honest. I wasn't expecting another masterpiece, I just sat back and was open to the ride. I'm glad I went in blind from any reviews. I'm thankful I got to see Indy in a few more interesting cinematic scenarios and left the theater pretty satisfied and surprised at the absence of cringe inducing scenes that I had pre emptively prepared for. Tldr; fun lil toime at the moobiez, 6.5/10
I love movies past, present and future. The only question for me is did I have fun and enjoy the movie? I have seen every Indiana Jones movie at least 10 times except Dial ... and I'm likely to see it many more. I liked seeing Harrison in his 70's. Even at the end when he was ineffective after being shot he manages a parachute and saves his Goddaughter and hat. Then of course there was the sweet reunion (I do confess that I would have liked to have seen an expanded end with the two of them back in their house enjoying retirement.
Bro, Dial is going to turn this film into a beloved classic. Everyone LOVES Temple of Doom today but for decades it was the black sheep of the franchise.
Ask 'hardcore' Indy fans and they still hate ToD. I don't know why, since I think it's easily the second best after Raiders. Crusade is a good send off, but the toned down violence and rehashed themes of Raiders bogged it down. Then Skulls was a steaming pile of crap. Haven't seen Dial yet, probably never will. I mean, why would I need to see it considering I'd rather spend my time rewatching the OT for like the 500th time.
Love this movie, but I agree with you completely. First half is fantastic, and the mystery about the Crystal Skulls is one of the greatest in all of Indiana Jones I think, but in the second half, there are like six different characters and none of them do much. The ant scene was still amazing though. I also think the finale showed too much of the magic/interdimensional powers. In Raiders, god himself did not appear Monty Phyton style to strike down the villains, in Temple of Doom, Shiva did not appear behind Indiana Jones to help him fight Mola Ram and Jesus did not appear in Last Crusade to shake his head at Donovan. Why? Because it would not just be too silly, but it would also ruin the magic. While in Crystal Skull, they showed EVERYTHING. They showed that the temple is a giant spaceship, they showed the alien in the brightest lighting they could find and they showed how everything just dissappears for some reason into another dimension. It would have been much better if the alien skeletons stayed like that, killed Irina (who could have used a gorier death imo) and only dissappeared themselves or something. And the overuse of CGI is a shame, because the practical setpieces like the cemetery and the tunnel leading up to the temple where the tribe people come out of the walls look absolutely amazing
Dr. Richard Kumble jumped off a dam and was able to make it back to Chicago, Indiana Jones can survive a waterfall. Remember, Indy drank from the Grail, and it let a man live 700 years
I actually liked Crystal Skull. Sure, it’s not as great Raiders or Last Crusade, but it was still pretty good. …I think it’ll be way better than what I’ve seen for Dial of Destiny anyways.
Never understood why so many hate and/or despise Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Sure it ain't like the trilogy that preceded it but it had Lucas and Spielberg, and provided decent closure for Indy: ua-cam.com/video/girTZVJOoec/v-deo.html
They actually did go to the jungles of Hawaii to film that chase scene and others, but due to an incoming storm they had to move production indoors....Sometimes I think you people just wine for the sake of wining.
So two things about the nuketown scene. The first is that the Mythbusters actually proved that you could survive the blast in a leadlined fridge without substantial injury. The second is that even if it is crazy for an old indy to walk away from, remember that he drank the grail which healed his head injuries and healed his father's gunshot wound so you could say that its possible the grail made him somehow stronger.
Reading the script it has a lot of enthusiasm and respect for the character of Indy. He’s not some tired old has-been, he enjoys life, there’s little details of his current life where he’s checking out archeology and enjoys it, and playing instruments to himself, small stuff like that.
I think the beginning warehouse chase is great The swinging from the lights between trucks is real Harrison actually did that even if he was on wires The truck slamming through the crates is real they used air cannons to blow the crates and the actors back and the actors for the Russians actually got thrown back into mats off screen
I hated Crystal Skull due to Mutt constantly insulting/ disrespecting Indy. The new movie is just dialing that up to 11. I’m not watching Indy get preached to/ belittled/ insulted by Phoebe Waller Bridge. The scene in which Mutt orders Indy to put back the knife is idiotic. Indy’s whole reason for being is grabbing treasure. It’s like telling James Bond he isn’t allowed to kill or use gadgets….
As a die-hard Indiana Jones fan, who has been one ever since I first saw ROTLA in 1981 when I was 14 years old, I will always defend KOTCS... I absolutely LOVE this movie... I mean, I REALLY, REALLY LOVE IT! It is my third favorite Indiana Jones movie of the five, after #1 ROTLA and #2 TOD... As much as I love and adore both #4 TLC and #5 DOD (and I do!), I like KOTCS just that "tiny bit more"... It's a terrific movie, pure unadulterated escapism, and SO MUCH FUN... It does not at all deserve the hate that it gets. Harrison Ford is in top form... Marion returns!... We get great new characters like Indy's long-lost son Mutt, and Spalko, with her plan to conquer the free world via mind control... and it has some classic set pieces (some of the best in the series) like the escape from Area 51, the mannequin-filled Doomtown, the gloriously over-the-top Jungle Chase, and the attack of the "Big Damn Ants"... The production design, special effects, and musical score is EPIC... It's a vintage "Golden Age" serial on modern day steroids! I know what I'm about to say will not matter AT ALL to the detractors of this film, but as a fellow KOTCS "defender" (I can't believe that I even have to SAY that), let me throw out a friendly counter-argument to the main criticisms that I always hear, which are... #1 - The plot/tone of the film (Sci-fi), and #2 - The over-use of CGI... and #3 - "Nuking the fridge" #1 - The whole intention of the plot/tone of KOTCS was to pay homage to the tropes of the B-movies of the 1950's (aliens, UFOs, Cold War paranoia), just as the original three paid homage to the tropes of the B-movies of the 1930's... And as for Mutt swinging from vines?... That's straight out of 1950's Tarzan films! It was never stated that the McGuffins could ONLY be religious in nature, or ONLY of this world... And regardless of that... Detractors are "fine" with ghosts that melt people's faces, voodoo and black magic, hearts being ripped out of people who still live, magical glowing stones that "return life to a village", 700 year old knights, grails that turn people into skeletons, and time travel... But NOT aliens?... Or, to quote Oxley... But NOT "Interdimensional Beings", in point of fact? #2 - I had no problem at all with the use of CGI... I thought it looked INCREDIBLE... Plus, the CGI was done by Lucas' ILM... "Is he NOT ALLOWED to use the tools of his OWN company (tools which HE created) in his OWN film to create elaborate effects?... Yet, other filmmakers CAN, and people don't have a problem with THOSE films?" Lucas was ALWAYS pushing the boundaries of SFX, from miniatures and matte paintings to state-of-the-art CGI ...If ILM had created CGI in the 1980's, he would have used it then too! Also, I feel that some fans are so obsessively attached to the "practical" effects of the past (which had their moment in the sun, and had their "iffy moments" as well) that they are not willing to adapt to the changing times (personally, I love BOTH kinds EQUALLY!). #3- How did Indy survive a nuclear blast in a refrigerator?... Well, how did Indy survive a 1,000 foot drop out of an airplane in a rubber life raft?... Because it's a big-budget "B-movie", that's how! You're not supposed to take these films so seriously... They are meant to be a comic-book, escapist, pulpy pastiche of serials of old... only with million-dollar budgets! Anyway, I know that my words are falling on the deaf ears of those that hate this film, and I didn't convince them at all with my counter-arguments... I'm sure that they have all heard these points before, and STILL don't care... WHY do so many people LOATHE this film? I could accept if one personally thought it was "vastly inferior" to the others... but to LOATHE it? I just don't get it... So I will close by just saying this... In the end, people like me, and the many others that love this movie, are LUCKY, because WE will ALWAYS have ONE MORE Indiana Jones movie to enjoy than they will... So I think that I came out on top! Still, if I can change the mind of just ONE person, than this exercise was worth it. My ranking and rating of the Indiana Jones series: #1 - RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK .........................(10/10) #2 - THE TEMPLE OF DOOM.................................(10/10) #3 - THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL.....(10/10) #4 - THE LAST CRUSADE......................................(10/10) #5 - THE DIAL OF DESTINY....................................(10/10) I can't help but give them ALL a 10/10, because I love them all so much! REMEMBER, IF ADVENTURE HAS A NAME, IT MUST BE INDIANA JONES.
This made me remember watching a speilberg interview with him riding around the universal lot on a golf cart, anyway, he said he use to sneak into the back lot of Universal a lot and ask everyone questions. Thinking about that now, one today would be thrown in jail.
Ford didn't shoot the arab swordsman in Raiders because he hurt his back. He did it because he, like the entire cast and crew were suffering from essnetially dysentery from local food and wanted the shoot to be over.
Except for a certain genius who packed canned food.
He was getting it mixed up with Ford hurting his back from a stunt in Temple of Doom

I took a hot girl on our first date to see Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. 15 years later we're married with kids, so it's always going to have a special place in my heart... even if it is a bit crap.
I went to a drive in with a girl I was infatuated with. 15 years later we are sorta kinda friends and that's about it. 😂
NICE 👌🏻❤

Love this
The two people in this movie who look like they’re consistently having fun are John Hurt and Cate Blanchett.
I never hated part 4. It doesn't beat the first 3 films but you can have fun with it.
Same here.
Same. It was respectable ending of the franchise. Oh wait..
It has a few good moments, but all in all it's pretty bad.
Yeah, but you can laugh at irl car crashes as well, doesn't really mean you should.
Honestly with some adaptation and yo be quite honest a whole heap less of George it could have been a good movie.
Your editing back and forth between Lucas and Spielberg is just gold 😂
This is a really good analysis. He tells the story of how the film came about, acknowledges the good and the bad, and says how he thinks it holds up compared to other movies. Awesome.
That shot of Mutt securing his bike in the airplane has always been one of my favorite moments.
I loved that, before the title was revealed, Harrison Ford was going around telling interviewers it was called 'Indiana Jones and the Orb of the Mer-Man Prince'.
I love this. Old friends challenging each other creativity. Steven is the builder. George is the planner. And together they create these films.
Why are you sticking with dvd what’s wrong with blu ray
It was good.. as an average independent adventure movie... it sucks however as an Indiana Jones... but then leave it to Kathleen Kennedy to fuck things up even durther with Indiana Jones 5.
This isn't Twilight or some crap TV show.. Fans don't care about who is married to whom. If that is why you like these moveis, you ar ein the wrong genre.
I agree dude. Everyone has such strong harsh opinions, but at rhe end of the day. An Indy movie is better than the average blockbuster. Some are near perfect and others are just fun enough! That's good for me.
@@youtubegarbage7876You're kidding right?, then why the f the three movies had a love interest for Indy?
I’m so with you on how the 50’s scenes are it’s greatest moments. I go back to this film just for those parts and the chemistry between Shia and Ford.
All false and it was handled that way and there is tons of indications that the directors want to do this
@🔥striker "all false"? Then what in the world do you mean by "this"?
If everything OP said was false... huh?
I'll give you credit for saying more than just "wrong" but you might as well commit & speak your mind.
It doesn’t feel right knowing it’s been 15 since Kingdom of the crystal skull came out.
Feel old
@DANIELLONE-ir1onIt's 1/5 of an average lifetime.
There was a 19 year gap from Crusade to Skull.
@DANIELLONE-ir1on I was either 14 or 15 years old when Crystal Skull came out.
And it feeling even worse knowing Dial Of Destiny was an abomination and was unnecessarily made.
Lots of good video games, not to mention Young Indy.
Indiana Jones and The Infernal Machine also had a great story.
A paper thin story, but Infernal Machine is still good.
Good points. Yeah, compared with some of the crazy of previous movies, the Nuclear Fridge isn't quite so insane.
It's notably worse than anything else in the franchise, there's episodes of young indie that work better than the movie does.
I never understood it either. Apparently Christian artifacts, immortality and spirits are ok, but aliens are crossing the line.
Awful movie in every way. I bet you are young.
Watching them ride off into the sunset at the end of The Last Crusade was the perfect ending to the series. You know there would be more adventures for the characters but we just wouldn't see them except in our imaginations.
Back when most film series were Trilogies… the way they should be.
Man. It is IJ - there are magical artifacts and voodoo rituals. If opening the fridge is your biggest problem then I think you need to calm down😄
We were getting those warnings on cartoons in the 1980s, too. I think M.A.S.K. had a PSA about this, where the fridge was in a garbage dump.
I'm probably in the minority, but I had no problem with "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull." It may not be strong story wise, but Harrison Ford was still great as an older Indiana Jones.
“It may not be strong story wise” “but I had no problem” LOL. I can’t even imagine what your criteria for a good film is.
You enjoyed Shia Labeouf's terrible portrayal as knockoff Fonzi??
@@Mr.NyongoHe’s meant to be Brando in “The Wild One”.
That's what I've been saying. Genuinely think if it came out in the 90s with the exact storyline it'd have been perfect, 100%
Mutt: "Are you a UA-camr?"
Hats Off: "Part time."
I really like the opening half of Crystal Skull. I agree with your analysis. It starts off pretty good. The relationship between Indy and Mutt is good to start off. This movie reminds me of Hook, another Spielberg movie that starts off great in the first half, but falls apart over the second half.
Say what you want about this movie. It gave us a funny Easter egg in New Vegas where what would happen to Indy realistically in the fridge
Out of all the moments in that film, that felt like John Wick falling out of a four story building and just walking it off to me. It just feels like the character for a single instant turned off fall damage, and while I love the sequence, I always laugh as the fridge bounces down the hill like four times.
They Nuked The Fridge for the first time
Fun fact: Originally, Willie, Short Round, Sallah, and Henry Sr. were to appear at Indy and Marion’s wedding.
I’m sad they didn’t. That’s what the wedding was missing.

I enjoyed DoD, but it didn’t have that Indy magic that the originals had and even Skull to an extend. I do think Skull does everything better than DoD
I wiped myself with a rock and realized that wiping myself with the bark of a tree wasn't that bad after all.
KOTCS does have its issues, but honestly, I can’t bring myself to hate it.
Splendid editing, you’re getting so good at this 😂
I just remember wanting to watch this movie so badly. And then when i finally got a chance to see it the entire movie i was just trying soooo hard to convince myself that i was enjoying it.
I felt the same
It's fitting that you chatted about Speilberg & Lucas' overreliance on CGI in this video since you covered BASEketball on your podcast.
Let me finish your sentence: .... Went to the Oscars in dresses while tripping on LSD. Seriously.
@@benbeesley4277- and later on Spielberg apologized about the Walkie talkies and changed it back to guns.
@@benbeesley4277 The changes to the old Indy movies are mostly matte fixes and added effects during the Ark finale.
Lucas proved that he really was a trend setter, while Spielberg actually listens to criticisms and Lucas just buries his head in his money and ignores it.

12:31 RIP Splash Mountain. You will live on in our memories as the GOAT.
I also find it quite amusing that the industry moved away from practical effects because they were expensive.
the cinematography more consistent with the movies this fourth film is inspired by would have made a huge difference I think, maybe making it more palatable
Yes!
Really great video. Loved the editing of the Connery slap. Man, I remember going to see Crystal Skull with my kids on opening day. The moment that CGI groundhog showed up you knew the film was in trouble. "Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should..." or words to that effect
The first half of this movie really is so great. The jungle antics drag it down a lot.
The entire move is awful
I saw Crystal Skull once in the theaters and that was it. All of the points that you made like the movie feeling like 2 different films, them trying to hide the Marion reveal, the interdimensional beings with the flying saucer, etc was exactly why it felt like a fever dream rather than an Indy movie. Even Spielberg wasn't sure about it. I thought Dial of Destiny turned out much better, going with the formula that worked in the first 3 movies. Was it perfect? No, but it had a lot of great moments.

I never understood this mindset. "I have to watch it out of obligation"
No you don't.
The slap cut is brilliantly done. Bravo.

I may be different in this opinion, but my order of favoritism is
1) Raiders
2) Skull
3) Crusade
4) Doom
Last Crusade was the first one I saw, but I watched the rest in 2008, when Crystal Skull came out. I enjoyed that they followed up with Marion's story and that they had a son together. Some of my friends even really liked the movie when it came out.
Awful list and 100% wrong!
PERFECT use of the Nothing but Trouble clip!!!
I think kingdom is super underrated. It doesn’t feel out of place for me since I find temple a little overrated. Crystal skull ends Indy’s story in a satisfying albeit messy adventure. There’s a lot to love and it feels like a true concluding chapter.
If you watch this movie knowing it's a 50's sci-fi B movie, you can really enjoy it.
Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is a Movie Title of all time.
12:00 I always assumed that, the Skull projected a message to Indy saying that Oxley’s mind will be saved should he deliver the skull back to Akator. Then you might ask “well why DOESNT Indy tell the group that’s what he’s doing then if that’s the case?”
I guess it’s more of a FEELING than straight up “oh this’ll solve everything”
Could also be that Indy knows if they hold on to the skull to keep it away from the Russians they’ll just hunt him and those closest to him incessantly And no WAY they’re just going to let the KGB get the skull willingly and attempt to get any sort of power that they’ve clearly seen is NOTHING of this earth and clearly can’t be countered.
Good and pretty fair video.
Shows some nice details about the earlier behind the scenes.

Great video, thanks for the interesting background on this! Love your Indy content man
The idea of Sean Connery singing "fly me to the moon" is hysterical to me!
Can you imagine how much cheaper it would have been to film a groundhog popping out of a mound of dirt?
The Nothing But Trouble nod in there was awesome! Great video and I can see you are also a man of great taste lol
Same same.
😅😅
watching this as a kid back in the day i think i came away with the same thoughts as you. i remember enjoying the first half of the film way more. though i will also say that kid me found the man eating ants scene to be the scariest death in the series for me.
But Jurassic park proved if you use all 3 then you get something spectacular
Great video. Your collection of clips and editing skills are always top notch.
Agreed.

@@doddsino Surely the more "hardcore" fans love it the most?
Spielberg is a filmmaker. Lucas is a businessman.
Remember, Indy drank from the Grail, and it let a man live 700 years
12:06 ah, Aykroyd... appeared in Temple of Doom AND has a personal connection to crystal skulls!
I actually liked Crystal Skull. Sure, it’s not as great Raiders or Last Crusade, but it was still pretty good.
…I think it’ll be way better than what I’ve seen for Dial of Destiny anyways.
That Nothing But Trouble gag was fantastic.

Good point
great video
I agree with you on all of it
Joe, you summed up the movie perfectly. Thanks for the commentary. I’m seeing Dial of Destiny tomorrow and I really hope it’s good.
It pains me that city of the gods version was never made... it sounded so promising
Reading the script it has a lot of enthusiasm and respect for the character of Indy. He’s not some tired old has-been, he enjoys life, there’s little details of his current life where he’s checking out archeology and enjoys it, and playing instruments to himself, small stuff like that.
It was promising, but it was still very poor for a first draft. It would’ve needed a ton of work to get it into a state where it could be filmed.
I'm like Butters in South Park, I thought it was alright.
I think the beginning warehouse chase is great
The swinging from the lights between trucks is real Harrison actually did that even if he was on wires
The truck slamming through the crates is real they used air cannons to blow the crates and the actors back and the actors for the Russians actually got thrown back into mats off screen
This was a nice break from all of the negativity regarding Dial Of Destiny.
#1 - The plot/tone of the film (Sci-fi), and #2 - The over-use of CGI... and #3 - "Nuking the fridge"
#1 - The whole intention of the plot/tone of KOTCS was to pay homage to the tropes of the B-movies of the 1950's (aliens, UFOs, Cold War paranoia), just as the original three paid homage to the tropes of the B-movies of the 1930's...
My ranking and rating of the Indiana Jones series:
#1 - RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK .........................(10/10)
#2 - THE TEMPLE OF DOOM.................................(10/10)
#3 - THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL.....(10/10)
#4 - THE LAST CRUSADE......................................(10/10)
#5 - THE DIAL OF DESTINY....................................(10/10)
I can't help but give them ALL a 10/10, because I love them all so much!
It wasn't great, but it was still a pretty good Indiana Jones film. It gets way more hate than it deserves.
