Thanks for uploading this video! I'm really new to doing stuff with cars, so I've been learning as things break. Your part about diagnosing the hose is great. Only my upper radiator hose is bad atm, but I may try to feel around with my lower just in case.

You Sir have done the best radiator hose replacement on UA-cam. I worked on mine today the problem was pushing the new hose back on the spigot. So, adding WD40 does the trick. Happy Holidays
Hi , I might be too late but make sure to never use worm drive hose clamps on any coolant hose application. Even though they’re a pain in the butt sometimes , make sure to ONLY use “spring” clamps. The worm drive clamps tear up hoses , greatly shortening the life of your hoses , but also they don’t loosen and tighten as the temp fluctuates. Again , ONLY use spring clamps with coolant hoses 👍🏼🙄
I have a question.see if you can help me out.i have a 98 Honda civic lx that I took the shop for 2nd opinion.firest tone told me my tie rods are blown.which when I took it to the 2nd shop they said that the tie rods were fine.that my only problem was the radiator had a leak on the top and the lower transmission cooler line.would you suggest I replace the radiator all at once?i fear that I will burn out the transmission.any input on this question will be greatly appreciated.
ChrisFix hey, Chris I have a question I just went to Goodyear to get my hoses changed I had a leak so now no leak but now two weeks later the gauge is increasing while driving and no coolant it's empty what do think that might be
Sounds they used a stop leak type product and it closed off too many portions of your radiator. It worked...just too well. I would go back and ask for an explanation.
Do not use wd40. Use radiator hose grease or silicone paste. Keep in mind if you apply grease on the radiator intake, the upper radiator hose may slide out more easily with the engine front to back movement. I only apply radiator grease on hard to reach areas. On 7:04 you can use fine wet sandpaper. If you are re-using the hose, always put the clamp on the same position on the hose or replace it with a new clamp. I always replace the clamp when putting on a new hose.
It’s been 8 years but I got stuck at a gas station in the evening and this video helped me get everything I needed and job completed to make it home safely. Much appreciated!! 💪
Spend the extra few bucks and replace the clamps, ur already down there so might as well...I had to do the radiator in my semi. I replace all hoses and clamps...ill pay extra for no headaches..great video!

Dude! You have made my day! I just replaced two radiator hoses and did a test drive and the engine was heating up. It was until I saw your video that I got all the air out and BOOOOOOM, no, the engine did not blow up, it ran like a bad ass! Thank you! B)
I'm not a car guy by any means, so this video was very helpful. I pretty much had most of this figured out just by looking through it, but I wanted to look it up. You had a lot of nice tips that I would not have thought of and made me more comfortable before moving forward on the job. Thank you.
Excellent video Chris. This exact same issue happened to my upper hose about a week ago, it tore open very close to the engine, and following your video I just completed this simple fix. Thanks again.
thanks for that video man! my cousin and i found a whole in my upper radiator hose of my '04 dodge neon with 246k miles which caused a leakage of fluid onto my engine which caused white steam to come from under the hood like you explained. it conveniently happened as we were halfway to six flags and many miles away from home. the gauge showed that the engine was way over heated. we found the whole and taped it up with surgical tape. the temp normalized and it saved my engine and my trip to six flags, but we knew that was only a temporary solution. i was going to just take it to the mechanic and spend the money but your video has shown me how easy it is to install an upper radiator hose! Now i have a new radiator hose and that $200 bucks the mechanic would've charged me still in my back pocket. Thanks dude!
Thank you man. I was underneath my jeep last week and noticed a small leak in my radiator hose. So after researching a little bit I found this video. It helped me out a lot. Definitely got a subscriber here. Keep up the good work!
Excellent video! Very similar project I need to do on my dodge caravan 2007 3.3. Got all tubes and coolant . Except metal lower engine outlet tube. Not sure if that needs replaced, yet. I'll do exact as you did in video and inspect metal O-Ring area of outlet And excellent tip on "Drill Hole" in lower tube to drain out remaining coolant as not to get soaked with coolant. Because it will be replaced anyhow. Brilliant!!!
Chevy dealer charged my wife $775 to change 4 radiator hoses: Upper, lower and both heater hoses, clamps, and replace coolant. Never let your wife take the car in. Lesson learned.
This video’s 9 years old and is still exactly what I need for my burst upper radiator hose on my 2009 Kia Spectra, I guess the manufacturers said “don’t fix what ain’t broke” (except mine is broken) 🤣 thanks for putting this together! (Now I also know to be prepared for extra coolant still sitting in the hose itself, definitely gonna grab that bucket) UPDATE: had to cut my radiator hose replacement down to size, but it went smoothly and the hose is replaced. Still gotta get coolant and “burp” that system but otherwise I’m good.
My car is a 1990 Oldsmobile with only 62k miles on it, I am the 2nd owner since 48k miles. I’ve already replaced water pump. And that stopped me from having to put coolant once a week. But now I am still having a small driveway leak under the radiator. I have now found that is a hose. This was the exact video I was looking for since I self diagnosed that it was the hose.
Pep Boys quoted me $460.00 for a upper and lower radiator hose replacement and a flush and fill for my 2002 Oldsmobile Alero. I kinda feel like they are trying to rip me off!
dsgb1981 This is why it is important to learn a 30 minute job like this. I got into working on cars because of a lack of funds and disgust for the industry ripping people off. I help friends and family out free of charge. Just buy the parts and I install. I have been told by them all that I do better work than the “trained” overpriced mechanics
I worked for Pep Boys for a couple of years. I would even then advise people to look elsewhere for repairs. Our labor prices were dictated by corporate, who paid us minimum wage to work on cars while they reaped the profits. (Oh, but if you upsold something that the customer didn't explicitly ask for originally, you got to keep 10% of that job! You could tell who the crooked mechanics were because they were the only ones making a living wage.) I got chewed out for installing a battery for someone for free (we were supposed to charge $70 labor for the job) and walked off. I've never looked back. If you're not buying tires and an alignment package (which is their loss leader, they pretty much price tires at cost) go anywhere but Pep Boys. Even dealerships are cheaper.
@@RockandrollNegro WOW! Just when I was kinda considering going to school for automotive technology. I honestly want to go for it just for education and MAYBE go into business for myself after reading this post. Thank you for sharing! That's horrible. Would you say changing lower and upper radiator hoses is the same in every American car made in 2002?
I have to change out the upper radiator hose on my 2007 Sonata today. I knew you had a video covering this...thanks! and thanks for demonstrating how to "burp" the coolant system afterwards. My other car is a 2011 Mini S Clubman, and it has a bleed screw for this....easy, but if this step is skipped, or not done properly, the car will overheat.
i wouldn't use WD40 to get the hose on cz its petroleum based it'll make the hose crack much faster. I'm really not trying to be a smart ass its just something i learned somewhere
+.a. .ko. I agree. Some silicone spray or silicone grease would be better. Some hoses are better not to lubricate at all, because they might get loose.
The best is a little dish detergent like Palmolive or Dawn. It makes the hose slippery, but won't deteriorate it, and the best part is the ease of washing it off your hands.
thank you so much for really getting your camera in there to show the details! I just had a "catastrophic failure" on my Chevy Impala and this is the perfect video to help me out!
JaKori took me about twenty minutes to replace the upper hose (the one on the driver’s side). I didn’t get the other one. Just make sure you tighten the hose clamp super tight otherwise you’ll waste a bunch of fluid on the road when it pops off like mine did.
This video just saved me a lot of money and hassle. Thank you for posting it! The tips on WD-40 and burping the system were especialy helpful. Thanks again!
I've read that petroleum products such as WD-40 deteriorate hoses over time. I've been told a silicone lubricant is a better choice. What are your thoughts on this?
hnkfsh81 It is true that wd40 will deteriorate a hose over time, but spraying a little on the end so it slides in will not cause any problems. After the car runs any wd40 will evaporate or be washed away from the coolant system. It is best practice to use silicone on petroleum based products but most people do not have silicone grease and do have wd40, so since it isnt a big deal in a situation like this, I used it. My hoses are still in great shape and have not "deteriorated" at all. Coolant hoses are pretty strong because they are constantly hot and have chemicals such as antifreeze in them.
Whenever I got a coolant hose leak I find that the simplest cheapest and easiest way to permanently fix it without having to spend sometimes even a $100 for new hose assemblies, is instead a 5 dollar fix: welcome to a simple hose coupling. It costs about 5 bucks and comes with two clamps and u can get one for about any size. What I do is simply cut the hose in half with a razor where the leak is, insert the coupling between the cut, clamp em back up and there ya have it , good as new, no tape, no worrying about it coming off because this is exactly the method the factory uses at the end of the hose, you're just doing it in middle. Good luck! Was surprised not to see anyone on UA-cam mention this 🤔 Ps: if ur stuck on the side of the road the easiest way to get back home would be taping up the leak with whatever tape u can get ur hands on (many rounds, use the whole roll if yall have to!) and if u have no tape just wrap a towel or cloth as tight as u can and then just loosen the coolant cap enough for some air to get out so u release the pressure on that tape or cloth. Then fill up reservoir with water if u have no coolant. (Make sure u don't leave that water in during the winter as it'll freeze up) Edit: big mistake some people make is fixing a leak and filling coolant back up without bleeding out the air. The engine overheats and right away we start assuming the thermostat is shot or u need a new water pump or whatever. BLEED THE AIR! When ur coolant empties, air pockets are created within the hoses and even after u fill it back up that air is still in there! First reaction to overheating after coolant refill should be bleeding the air. There are many UA-cam videos on how to do this properly. Good luck, coolant hose bursts are the worst!
@@zamorakbrews7228 are u referring to the tape or the coupling? Tape is definitely a "band-aid fix" just to get you home. Coupling and clamp method is completely permanent. Every hose in your car's got a clamp at the end to hold it on, this is the same clamp, no different. I've done this countless times without it ever having an issue holding. Good luck
hey chris one of your subscribers here there's nothing i could say that hasn't been said except that i just change the hoses on my wife's ford focus &she has the same clamps as you removed just wanna say that i hate those fu..n clamps it took me more time to get the clamps off than the job itself lololol i changed them for the other clamps which are much easier to work with ohh by the way your great !! luv your vids

This helped me understand more what I was reading in the manual. Looking for a video on an actual thermostat replacement (if there is one) :)
I love working on my car. This really helped me with the lower radiator hose for my 2006 Buick Lucerne. I recently changed my upper hose after it cracked on me 20 miles from home. I noticed small dribbles not too long after I changed my upper near my lower (but I wasnt sure if thats where the lower was at) but they disappeared. Definitely changing that and the radiator cap this weekend. I noticed also that my new upper hose has signs of leaking where it connects to the engine. I think I might not have tightened it enough since it's the screw clamp and not the regular clamp.
Thanks! My hose blew out today on the way home and thought id have to call the ex for help. So glad you have this here! Looks easy to do, and Im very glad I dont have to get help. Thanks!!

Just a little tip, when changing the lower hose instead of pulling the hose off and getting covered in coolant, drill a hole in the hose first to let it drain.
TheMachiningman That is a great tip! Thanks bud!
where on the lower hose would you drill the hole?
lowest point so the most possible coolant can drain out

Excellent, thank you, I so enjoyed and gleaned from your instruction! I am so using this video this evening. I was quoted $150… I don’t think so. You and I got this and I’m shooting for under $40! I’ll be working with a 2002 town and country van. I can say at this point you have given me the confidence to complete it! We got this! 😃
Awesome! Let me know how it goes!
I'm a huge fan Chris! Just wanted you to know that when ever I'm about to work on my vehicle's I always look @ you videos to know how to do it before I begin or start. You always explain every single detail & always helps! Thanks man, continue doing a good job as always!!
Hey Chris, thank you for this video. My upper hose blew off a couple days ago and this video helped me diagnose what might be happening. From now on, your videos will be my go-to videos for vehicle troubleshooting and maintenance! Thanx again. :)
+chkr00 Awesome! Glad the video was helpful!
Me too!
Hey man just wanted to say thanks. I pulled into my place and immediately got a huge cloud of smoke. Upper radiator hose burst. Instead of having to get it towed and pay probably 200 dollars I got a hose for 22, and watched your video. Thanks again buddy.
Awesome! Glad the video was helpful!
Thanks for uploading this video! I'm really new to doing stuff with cars, so I've been learning as things break. Your part about diagnosing the hose is great. Only my upper radiator hose is bad atm, but I may try to feel around with my lower just in case.
Thank you I’m in the process of replacing my lower radiator hose! Your videos are always very helpful.
I just want to thank you for the sharing. The videos u made are the tutorials for my self learning. I am going to do some maintainence works for my two babys, Jaguar XK8 and XJ6. I believe it would be lots of fun and satisfactions.
im so grateful for this channel, I have a 1990 ford bronco and its hard to find youtube videos instructing so well on old cars :)
You Sir have done the best radiator hose replacement on UA-cam. I worked on mine today the problem was pushing the new hose back on the spigot. So, adding WD40 does the trick. Happy Holidays

ChrisFix got radiator fluid jus goin thru radiator in front end....bad hose or what?
This video is 10 years old but very informative on why my 2003 Lexus GS has a bulge on the radiator hose. Thanks Chris!
Great advice. I would've done the opposite out of ignorance. 👍 @lisacolbert5987
Dude you're an awesome teacher.
+Joe Allen Barniak Thanks Joe!
As someone who knows absolutely nothing about cars, auto jargon, and the like, I thank you VERY much. Simple and helpful. You're great, keep it up.
GraveRobbertt Great! That is why I make these videos! Glad you found it helpful!
Hallelujah ! ! 😄 Your tips are exactly what I was hoping to find. Chris Fix is Quik Fixn’ Dirty.
Was definitely wondering about wd40... seems like it could damage rubber/plastic. Thanks for the heads up on radiator hose grease
Very good points, especially about not using WD-40
It’s been 8 years but I got stuck at a gas station in the evening and this video helped me get everything I needed and job completed to make it home safely. Much appreciated!! 💪
Yo I am 2 minutes into your vid and absolutely love your explaining without rambling..👍
Thanks!
Spend the extra few bucks and replace the clamps, ur already down there so might as well...I had to do the radiator in my semi. I replace all hoses and clamps...ill pay extra for no headaches..great video!
I love you, this is amazing and makes me want to learn how to work on cars! You're the best and super appreciated for making this.
George Hebert - I appreciate your ability to articulate your advice with proper use of the English language. You do not bloviate your instructions and you focus precisely on the subject without distraction. I will be looking for more of your advice.
George Hebert Thanks George! I try to do this for all of my how to videos! New automotive 'how to' videos every Thursday and most Mondays so stay tuned!
Hose exploded while driving down the road, thanks for helping me fix it!
this happened to me last night. Luckily I was a minute away from home.
Man words can't explain how great & instructive this video was. Very detailed, very knowledgeable and not only did you take your time to do the task you also took the time to explain how it's done and why it needs to be done. And the quotes on those mechanic prices was just icing on the cake, great video mane thanks

You didn’t do it the way I do it... I didn’t hear a single curse word... also, it looked really easy when you did it. Lol

Dude! You have made my day! I just replaced two radiator hoses and did a test drive and the engine was heating up. It was until I saw your video that I got all the air out and BOOOOOOM, no, the engine did not blow up, it ran like a bad ass! Thank you! B)
+Javier0000Rami AWESOME! Glad the video was helpful!

I'm glad the videos are helping you! I got the next one coming shortly, stay tuned!

I'm not a car guy by any means, so this video was very helpful. I pretty much had most of this figured out just by looking through it, but I wanted to look it up. You had a lot of nice tips that I would not have thought of and made me more comfortable before moving forward on the job. Thank you.
thank you thank you thank yoooou! You were very clear and helpful. I really appreciate the video. Im about to get the hose and clamps right now :)
+Raquel Jacobsen Glad the video was helpful! Good luck!
Excellent video Chris. This exact same issue happened to my upper hose about a week ago, it tore open very close to the engine, and following your video I just completed this simple fix. Thanks again.
nickycarts Thanks man! Glad the video was helpful and you got the part fixed! Nice work!
Thanks ... just changed my hose after watching your video . Easy fix
Awesome! I am glad you found my video helpful.
thanks for that video man! my cousin and i found a whole in my upper radiator hose of my '04 dodge neon with 246k miles which caused a leakage of fluid onto my engine which caused white steam to come from under the hood like you explained. it conveniently happened as we were halfway to six flags and many miles away from home. the gauge showed that the engine was way over heated. we found the whole and taped it up with surgical tape. the temp normalized and it saved my engine and my trip to six flags, but we knew that was only a temporary solution. i was going to just take it to the mechanic and spend the money but your video has shown me how easy it is to install an upper radiator hose! Now i have a new radiator hose and that $200 bucks the mechanic would've charged me still in my back pocket. Thanks dude!
SWEET! Glad the video was helpful and helped you save a lot of money! Thanks for letting me know. I love hearing stories like this!
Simple but informative and straight to the point, thank you!
Thank you man. I was underneath my jeep last week and noticed a small leak in my radiator hose. So after researching a little bit I found this video. It helped me out a lot. Definitely got a subscriber here. Keep up the good work!
damn dude 300k miles and it's still running? you da man!! my dodge ram has 265k miles on it.
Yea man! You are almost there yourself!
🤦🏽♂️😩
They're called "stealerships" for a reason. After all, GM stands for "Gouge Me."
This video’s 9 years old and is still exactly what I need for my burst upper radiator hose on my 2009 Kia Spectra, I guess the manufacturers said “don’t fix what ain’t broke” (except mine is broken) 🤣 thanks for putting this together! (Now I also know to be prepared for extra coolant still sitting in the hose itself, definitely gonna grab that bucket)
UPDATE: had to cut my radiator hose replacement down to size, but it went smoothly and the hose is replaced. Still gotta get coolant and “burp” that system but otherwise I’m good.
8:13, I try to avoid putting tools on top of the battery, you could accidentally short it!
I have to do this on my Taurus. It's a whopping -3F outside. I don't have a heated garage. Not excited.
Video 7 years old but still help me yesterday on changing my hose. Great video!!!! My car working wonderful with no overheating!!!
Honda gave me a $500 quote today when I went to get my recall. I just laughed and left
Dealerships are actual criminals
A local mechanic quoted me at 682 dollars to do this on an 02 Saturn, that's half the value of my car!!! Thank you for posting this video.
Robert Wilson Dang. Well now you know what you need to do!
Pep Boys quoted me $460.00 for a upper and lower radiator hose replacement and a flush and fill for my 2002 Oldsmobile Alero. I kinda feel like they are trying to rip me off!
dsgb1981 same here
dsgb1981
This is why it is important to learn a 30 minute job like this. I got into working on cars because of a lack of funds and disgust for the industry ripping people off. I help friends and family out free of charge. Just buy the parts and I install. I have been told by them all that I do better work than the “trained” overpriced mechanics
dsgb1981 kinda? $30 dollars of hoses, about $30 to $60 and maybe an hour or two. At most $150 including labor. I'd tell them to go screw themselves.
You could tell who the crooked mechanics were because they were the only ones making a living wage.)
I got chewed out for installing a battery for someone for free (we were supposed to charge $70 labor for the job) and walked off.
9:19
Hose: 17 gallons coolant tsunami
Chris: that’s not that much
Thank you very much good sir. I have an old truck, about 19 years old and this video seriously helped
i wouldn't use WD40 to get the hose on cz its petroleum based it'll make the hose crack much faster. I'm really not trying to be a smart ass its just something i learned somewhere
+.a. .ko. I agree. Some silicone spray or silicone grease would be better. Some hoses are better not to lubricate at all, because they might get loose.
Rubber is petroleum based also
yes... thats kinda the point
Yes - Silicone - nothing else on rubber
The best is a little dish detergent like Palmolive or Dawn. It makes the hose slippery, but won't deteriorate it, and the best part is the ease of washing it off your hands.
Thank YOU! ! !
2:11 You'll also notice the engine Shaking. Sometimes you don't see steam.
4:02 I can imagine what they'd charge for an '01 Grand Prix!
My mechanic just quoted me $360 for this job 🤦♀️ Time to get dirty!
I love you so much Chris I used to watch your videos all the time and just came across this one after buying my first car thank you for the help
I love your videos, I think it would have been less messy if you took a razor to that bottom hose.
thank you so much for really getting your camera in there to show the details!
When you pour your antifreeze...your pour with the bottle sideways...not straight up like that. It allows for a smoother flow from the jug.
I think this was the BEST DYI video ever made ...!!!!! Great job... I followed this step by step and save a lot of money
It was cool I learn it was helpful thanks. WD40,🤣 king of the Hell!
I have Pontiac g6 2008 peoples heat please if you know how can I fix it please tell me
hnkfsh81 Possibly then the PB silicone spray would be ideal.
thank you so much chrisfix. it help with my studies then suddenly apply to my car, i owe you a lot.
I am glad you are learning a lot!
Those bitches at my Honda dealership quoted me $700 to replace the hoses.
WWaveform Creations That is why I make these videos! I hate people getting ripped off and not knowing any better!
are you shitting me? it should be no more than 150, and even that's a lot of money for such an easy fix.
Wow! Whats so special about rubberized hoses?
mrklimczyk That's why it is called the Stealership.
dealerships are 90% of the time rip-offs same with mechanics, just do the work yourself save yourself thousands lol
crazy how I am going back to some of your old videos... and even seeing the difference in how you do your videos now...
thank you
Whenever I got a coolant hose leak I find that the simplest cheapest and easiest way to permanently fix it without having to spend sometimes even a $100 for new hose assemblies, is instead a 5 dollar fix: welcome to a simple hose coupling. Good luck! Was surprised not to see anyone on UA-cam mention this 🤔
Ps: if ur stuck on the side of the road the easiest way to get back home would be taping up the leak with whatever tape u can get ur hands on (many rounds, use the whole roll if yall have to!) and if u have no tape just wrap a towel or cloth as tight as u can and then just loosen the coolant cap enough for some air to get out so u release the pressure on that tape or cloth. Then fill up reservoir with water if u have no coolant. (Make sure u don't leave that water in during the winter as it'll freeze up)
Edit: big mistake some people make is fixing a leak and filling coolant back up without bleeding out the air. Good luck, coolant hose bursts are the worst!
this seems more like a bandaid fix more than anything, still a good mention though.
Good luck
3:30 How to find your *crack* 😌💨
hey chris one of your subscribers here there's nothing i could say that hasn't been said except that i just change the hoses on my wife's ford focus &she has the same clamps as you removed just wanna say that i hate those fu..n clamps it took me more time to get the clamps off than the job itself lololol i changed them for the other clamps which are much easier to work with ohh by the way your great !! luv your vids
mario d.c Yea, those clamps are a real pain. I am glad you changed them to the hose clamps. They are way better and easier! Thanks a lot Mario!
So why was your check engine light on on this one. Do you remember? Lol
Thank you so much for your video's. You have a demeanor about you that is very viewer friendly, helps even the less experienced feel comfortable and understand. No language barrier :) I stumbled across this looking to learn about tips, part names, steps on replacing my thermostat on my 1999 Toyota Tacoma. This helped me understand more what I was reading in the manual. Looking for a video on an actual thermostat replacement (if there is one) :)
You know. Those hose aint loyal
Brother they wanted to charge me $550 for this…
Chris I don't know how much money you save me but it's got to be a couple thousand at this point. THANK YOU👍🏼🇺🇲🙏🏼🎉

If you dont know how to do this you shouldn't own a car
timothy scott I just got a car that's 17 years old and it's my first one. I didn't know how to do this but I'm learning rn
Do you know all 50 states and their capitals, do you know who every single president name is, do you know about everything that happened in American history, could you get all 100 questions on a citizenship test right. Probably not maybe you shouldn't be a citizen.
timothy scott silly comment... I’m sure there are things you use daily that you don’t have a clue about. Computer... can you change internal ram, hard drives, mother board etc etc. your taps in your house... can you change washers, seals if it leaks etc etc. my point is if your theory was applied to everything then most people shouldn’t use or own anything including yourself, but hey maybe your an expert on everything.
timothy scott were you born knowing how to do this??? I didn't think so...now STFU
timothy scott You were clueless while doing something at some point in your life aswell you bum.
