I have some small foraging bags that I use for knitting. I love that they have a leather strap at the top with a snap. They fit so nicely onto a belt or other strap as well as the bar in front of my on our side by side. It's perfect for knitting socks while we are out riding but would also work for hiking. I got mine on amazon and they're super affordable.
OMG, NO WAY!! Yaaaay!!!! Best surprise to be knitting and relaxing and hear “This one comes from A-M Rich828…” WHAT? OMG🎉That’s MEEEEE!! 🤩Lol! Thanks so much for addressing my post and guiding me towards some of your helpful tips/videos! Super cool to be shouted out by you. Hope to catch you out on the trails some day! 🥾🧶😁🙌 15:59
I'm a huge knitting while hiking fan! I just returned from an 18 day hiking vacation and completed a pair of socks in that time, all while hiking. My most recent change was to start using a 12" circular. My preferred method is two circular needles but the one smaller circular needle means I can drop my knitting at any moment (say in an emergency or to catch a fall) and I don't have to worry about cables and needles getting in the way!
How fortunate to be able to visit these state parks! Have fun. 😊 I would never knit and hike, I would absolutely give those place my 100% of my attention. Maybe knit during meal but likely I would save it for indoor time experiencing everything on even my local trails is worth it, I would miss so much knitting.
Just wanted to say that your new hat looks absolutely adorable on you! I personally don’t usually love when a hat sticks up at the top of the head, but there’s something about the crown detail on this that is super cute - and such a great colour! 🤗💚
This was great Nat!!!! I bring my yarn with me everywhere in Florida. To the beach, pool, bars, even kayaking! I use dry bags as project bags when we do water activities and I have my own special beach WIP bag with some extra goodies :)
I love knitting and walking - I do find when my hands get too hot, it can change my tension, so I try to keep an eye on that and may put my knitting away for a stretch to cool my hands down again.
Nice pics at the end! Knitting and walking is not for me, I would want to just enjoy the nature. Now sitting in nature and knitting is another story, I'm all for it!
I knit on my porch a lot and at our camp site when we go to the lake on weekends. I am actually porch sitting now while watching your video but it’s 85 in KY today too. I am not sure I can knit and hike without falling on my face!!
I been crocheting while walking, even have a hooks with lights for Moonlight walkking....yep crazy for hookinh. I do some small knitting, sometime but I prefer crocheting over knitting while walking. Thank you for the tips. Happy journey🌼🐕💃🐝
That is AMAZING! I’m so impressed you can hook and walk. I’m starting to practice doing some stitches without looking. Going to take me a while to get there!
Thank you for the tips! When it’s cooler I have found wearing a hoodie with a kangaroo pocket works nicely to hold my yarn. I also like using light weight stuff sacks for project bags. With skinny needles they can poke through but they are light weight and easy to clip onto things and stuff into a bag to take along with me.
Not a hiker, but I would love to be able to knit more when I'm sitting outside with my kids or at sports games. I'm not good at knitting without looking so I definitely need to practice. Great video!
We love using chalk bags for our hikes. They can hold water or sunglasses and keys, snacks. I don’t hike and knit at the same time but love to bring knitting along to do at breaks.
I found a stroller drink caddy at the thrift store that I now use for my walking and knitting. The two cup holders are the perfect size to hold a yarn cake each (so I usually use them to knit very simple colourwork), then there’s space in the middle to set my project if I need to put my knitting down. It also came with a small zipper pouch on the front that is just large enough for my phone. Since I also take my large dog with me on my walks, I usually just use a longer leash that I double up. I used to wear the leash around my waist, but my husband broke me of that habit when I was pregnant (he was justifiably concerned about the baby). Now I wear the leash across one shoulder like you would a cross-body bag. It keeps my dog close and doesn’t tangle with my yarn that way. I hope y’all try it! Walking/hiking and knitting is one of my most favorite things. I was so excited the first time I heard someone mention that they do this and it has changed my life for the better.
Ahh just reading this has me excited! You get it! Nothing better than two wonderful things colliding. I love the stroller caddy idea. That sounds so cool!
I like to knit while my kids play outside, but they are young and need help/supervision. I like to use my yarn pockets from cottontail farm so I can move around easily. I put it either through a belt loop or on my wrist.
I just love the montage of all the places/national parks y’all have been to & you’ve knit at; I have looked forward to this moment since the second y’all announced doing this.
I went on to order the chalk bag but it was sold out however there was one by another company with beautiful images, I got the Yosemite one and love the elastic for the chalk brush as I can put my drop spindle there and fiber in the bag and use it to walk and spin too. Also, on your cozy one, you could make the icord longer and wear it crossbody.
@KnittyNatty well it came in the mail, super cute but this one is wayyyy too small, I will have to return it and try again. Maybe I will just drive down to the local REI
My knitting outdoors couldn’t be safer. I love to sit out on my deck and watch the birds or just listen to an audiobook. I’m not too coordinated with doing anything else when I’m walking!😂😂
Well, this answered all my questions (how do you do it)! Thanks for the knit and hike tips. I do want to try this soon, perhaps just on walks for a while. I really enjoyed the compilation of all your state park pictures in this!❤
Hi! I enjoyed this video. I’m amazed at people who can knit in the dark or while walking. I can knit simple projects without looking much, but definitely need to occasionally. And walking, I do need to look pretty much all the time! I love to knit outside though, and have taken my knitting up mountains, to the beach and to islands. Anywhere I’m going if I’m going to have a chance to sit and enjoy a pretty view.
Walking along and knitting at the same time is definitely not for me I’m afraid! I would end up tripping over something for sure. However there is nothing I like better than taking a small project (usually socks) in my bag and finding a nice spot to sit and relax then get the knitting out while I’m sitting in the open air! Definitely more enjoyable and safer for me x
Thanks for sharing your travel across US! My moto is If I can't bring my knit, I'm not coming😂 I use a small bag on my arm or with a carabiner on my jeans
I find it fascinating to knit and hike. I am not going to attempt. Here at Voyageurs NP the trails are full of tree roots and rocks. However... I love to sit at the dock, watch the water and the boats. So relaxing. Thanks for another great video.
I'm heading to a music festival this weekend, Bearded Theory in Derbyshire. I'll be working on some socks, drinking beer, and listening to some great bands. I think walking and knitting is a long way off for me as I only began knitting 7 weeks ago 😊
Did you go into the cave at the Craters of the Moon? In Idaho they have a museum with the world's largest potato chip! I hope you are enjoying your travels.
Thank you so so much for the detailed explanation of different ways to hold onto your projects while hiking/walking. So helpful and I can’t wait to try it. Now if I could just figure out how to walk the dogs & knit at the same time. Wouldn’t that be something!? 🤣🤣
@@KnittyNatty I have one that I think could easily do well with a hands free leash. The other one is quite spicy and very excitable. He gives me a run for my money on the daily. 😅
I can't really knit and hike with my bad knee, and I even got trekking poles for better balance and weight distribution. But I would love to hike to a place to rest and knit, since it would also get me resting more and taking it slower than when I was healthier instead of pushing through the pain. I actually want to knit more by the campfire now.
i find knitting while walking my tension loosens up a bit so i need to have a project that i only use for walking. i also get a sore lower back from it, i guess due to wear I'm holding my arms, so i alternate 10 minutes of walking and knitting, and then 10 minutes of walking with my arms by my sides and that seems to be a good mix that i don't get lower back pain.
really liked the video. very informative. QQ: How or what do you use for Toaster on hikes, of he goes with you. Terrain and hot ground to protect paws? I know they say to test heat of ground, put the back of your hand on the ground for 7 seconds. if you can't keep it on ground because its too hot, then your pet can have mild to severe injury to their paws. Just curious as I'm a new dog adopter. She is a senior dog so I want to make sure she is safe and comfortable too.
Aww yay!! You’ve done such a special thing adopting a senior dog. ☺️ We usually walk or hike early in the morning and in cooler weather, so the ground hasn’t had the chance to heat up. We always check trails/park rules to see if dogs are allowed. It’s about 50/50. He doesn’t wear anything on his paws, but of course we keep an eye out for sharp objects. Biggest danger so far has been those spiky things goat heads or grass spurs, they have a million names. Toaster will start to limp as soon as one gets in his paw pad, so we just pause and pull it out for him. I also have a collapsable water bowl for him that lays flat and can clip to my backpack to dry out. I fill it with one of my own water bottles.
@@KnittyNatty Thanks for responding 😊Thats 's great about the morning hours and weather forecasts. We usually have a go bag for her and she has her own "cooler" for her meals and snacks for road trips. It hasn't been too hot here but I see other dog owners use those booties. Being a somewhat new dog owner (1yr), I'm always open to ideas and helpful tips (mainly the safety ones) Love seeing Toaster on your hikes.
Hello from Swansea, Illinois. I can knit in the round without looking but my problem is that I can go to sleep and keep knitting, sock legs should be twenty inches long. I had to rip back the leg quite a ways. It’s just so relaxing and I go to sleep.

I gotta say, I love living in Europe, but the national parks you have in the US make me jealous! Enjoy your time.
The US has so much geological diversity! It’s been so fun to see a lot of it!
Also living in Europe and I feel the same! 😄

Swatching while walking, brilliant! Looking forward to the cozy mods as well. 🙌
Great tips! I love to knit outdoors, especially when we’re camping.
You are inspiring me to try knitting while I walk. Thank you!
I’m more of a hiker that brings my knitting and knit at a viewpoint or just having a break. Love the video..😁😁
