Another option, once you know your best size, is to cast on using a provisional cast on, working from the middle of the hat with your full stitch count out to the first crown, then when that half is done return to the middle, put your cast on stitches back on your needle, and work in the opposite direction. This makes it easy to have two colors, to work only a certain number of inches of ribbing, or to not bother with increasing.
Toaster in the background looking like a band kid, tapping his foot. 😆😆 I've only made one of these and mine, too, came out a little small. I need to do a new one!! I've loved all the different ways you've worked yours. 😊
I have an interesting option for you. If you need to use up fingering yarn and you have leftover small skeins from, say, an advent project; you could knit a mosaic pattern with the small skein color into the brim of the hat. This might be especially fun if you can't decide the contrast color small skein you want to use up or the mosaic knit pattern. You could also knit the mosaic colorwork band into the foldover section so you can match the color to an outfit and just flip it to the other side to match a different outfit. I might try this and report back since I'm going to have an s-ton of leftovers from this current advent project I'm working. I'm going to use a neutral base for the hat too, so no matter which side is showing, the base color will work.
You’re probably the first girl on UA-cam that just talked about the same thing for 30 minutes that I was not annoyed by 😂 I watched the whole video and now I want to make one. Ya sold me on it.
Thank you for all the great information. I Loved seeing Toaster having pleasant dreams behind you during the video. My Ace (Black Lab) does that, and I always wonder were is he running to. 😂
Dear Natty, thank you for this and all the other great videos 🎉😊 I almost enjoy every single one of yours! In this one I find it particularly cute how Toster is twitching his paws 🐾 in the background 🥰 we don't see him but he must be having a very exiting hunt in his dreams 💤🌠🌛 Best regards from Switzerland 🇨🇭💐
Yay! I am so excited that you’re doing a tutorial for casting on the musselburgh hat. I’m a fairly new knitter and I’d love to make tons of them but it’s very intimidating for me.
Love your Musselburgh collection and that you did a special video for this topic and pattern. I’ve knit many and will continue doing so as it’s truly the best fitting and most versatile hat project ever. I also love to see all the different creative versions people have made.
I've made 3 so far and have plans for another 3 already. Just wanted to say it's pronounced Mussel-bra not Mussel-borough, I'm from just south of the Scottish border. I'm going to make my next one with the ribbing in the centre, I've already made one with a contrasting band in the centre of the tube for a contrast brim.
Many thanks for the pronunciation tip! British names frequently confound me, so it's immensely helpful to learn the accepted way to say "Musselburgh." (I'm still recovering from learning that "Cholmondeley" can be pronounced "CHUM lee." Sigh>)
Ysolda pronounces it Musselborough. I’m not hearing a distinct bra sound as you mentioned. Just went back and listened to her part 1 tutorial. I think most Americans feel pretty good about not saying Musselburg as in burger. It’s not easy to get subtle distinct pronunciations correct when the untrained ear is hearing Mussle-borough.
@@susancrosby4363 I’d be inclined to say Musselburra. I think most people are familiar with how to say Edinburgh these days, and it’s just the same as that.
I am so glad you made this!! I’m on a journey to get one “just right” for me - on my third hat - and I love all of your input and options!!! This video is so helpful!!
Lots of wonderful tips. I’ve made about 6 or 7 musselburgh hats. All just stockinette, one was in two colors. I like the ribbed brim a lot. That will be my next one. Looked like Toaster was having a nice dream 😊❤
Totally agree that the Musselburgh is the best hat! I have yarn picked out for another that will be fingering weight held with a strand of suri. Have you thought about doing a version with fuzz?
What a fun round up of your beautiful Musselburghs! I'm still working on my first and I'm really enjoying it. I can definitely see myself making more. Thanks for all the great tips.
Thank you so much! I live in a pretty windy place and I've been needing some kind of hat that would warm my ears. The musselburgh with the foldover brim sounds PERFECT! I'm going to wait until your cast-on tutorial comes out, then I'll see if I can start it then! Thank you!
When I looked back at my projects I was surprised to realize I have knit 15 Musselburgh hats in the last few years. It’s such a good project for that single skein of fingering weight yarn.
Thank you for this, and for the link to the cast-on tutorial! I recently bought the Musselburgh pattern to use some special skeins, but I was overwhelmed by all the different charts; knowing what stitch count you use (and what cast-on) make me feel a bit more confident about getting started. :D
So excited! I have the pattern but am a bit intimidated by it as a new knitter. I am a visual learner and it is going to be incredibly helpful. 😊 I love all of the varieties you have made already.
Perfect Timing for this video. I am just getting ready to cast my first one on tomorrow. Getting ready for a big summer trip and know this will be great for travel knitting. Thank you for all the details on your project pages. They are so helpful!
Loved following your progression with this pattern! Hats are not usually on my radar, as it's rarely cold enough to wear them here in Raleigh, but yours are so cute! I'm eyeing my stash for Musselburgh prospects :-)
I started my first Musselburgh last week and spent a lot of time looking at your various projects on Ravelry to decide if I was going to do one colour or two. The cast on / first round was super hard, I'm not a magic loop knitter, and I ended up using smaller needles for the first 3 rounds then went up and it worked for me ❤
Perfect timing! About to start a Pittsburgh Penguins Musselburgh for my son and absolutely loved the review/options that are available to me. Your tutorial on the Pinhole Cast On was Amazing!! Thank you so much!!❤ 🧶
Hi Natalie. I loved seeing all your musselburgh hats you have made They all look great. I am thinking of knitting a hat for winter as it is coming up winter in Australia. I have crocheted four hats for myself and wear them when I got for walks in the morning to keep my ears warm and head as it can get cold. I will be looking forward to your tutorial on how to start knitting the hat. I thought Toaster looked funny in the background as it looked like he was wearing a hat. Thankyou.
Love your videos Natty, when I see you've posted I come directly!! Something I've said before is that maybe you could consider improving your audio? I don't know if you have a mic but you sound a bit as if you were inside of a tin can and kind of low in volume. Please, not trying to be rude, just some constructive criticism!
Looking forward to your tutorial on how to start them! I’ve been wanting to make one for awhile, and finally cast it on. It took me 4 tries to get it started. I’m sure however you do it is easier than what I did!
Thank you so much for this video. I’m about to cast on a Musselburgh and I got a little overwhelmed on how to start. Now I have a better idea on how long to make it and some adjustments I may want to make. All of your hats look great!
You inspired my first one 2 years ago, and now I’m on my third. I get cold headaches when I walk my dog in windy Colorado during the winter, and this is the only hat that can prevent them. I seriously don’t think I’ll ever knit a different hat pattern. Thanks so much for showing the sock set example! And I would SO love a cast-on tutorial. I can do the pinhole, but it’s pretty painful mentally. 😂
Thank you! Just cast on my first one last night and your details were really helpful. Really want to try the ribbing in the middle like you described with your last hat. Love it!
So glad you are doing a tutorial to get started. I have had the pattern for over a year and tried to start about 4 times. Just can’t quite grasp it. I’ll be watching your tutorial. 🎉❤
Thank you for another great video. I'm just casting on my third Musselburgh and I'm going to try your most recent alteration so thank you so much for the idea 😊
I just loved this video. I started my first hat on Friday, and I just went past the half point when I started watching this video. Thanks to this video, I realized I'm knitting the wrong size, so I'll have to unravel al my work and start again. Lucky, it's not done yet.
Thank you so much for this! My 1st musselburgh came out too big, but fits husb just right. I have 2 WIPs where I’m at the point of trying to figure out sizing. Your info came just in time! 😊
Great video, I look forward to your tutorial. I have made one but not happy with the fit and it was really hard to start for me. Thanks for all you do.
I love the Musselburgh! I can never figure out the cast on though. I usually do a long tail cast on and hide it on the inside. Looking forward to your tutorial!
Another brilliant episode Natalie 🎉 I am a new knitter and was wondering why you knit some of the hat on a short circular needle and some on magic loop……..why not just do the whole thing on magic loop? please can you explain why this is? You and your amazing channel are the reason I decided to finally learn to knit (have been a crocheter for years) and my project queue is Musselburgh hat, socks and a something cozy sweater! 😂😂
Thank you! There are too many stitches for me to comfortably do magic loop on my 32" needles after the increases. Plus, moving over to 16" needles means fewer transitions and easier and faster knitting!
I’m thinking about adding the ribbed middle section. Have you found that the ribbed section fits much more loose than when using plain stockinette? I’m thinking of doing a k2, p2 rib.
Thank you for this tutorial so much. And the project notes are really useful SO helpful. Did you use magic loop technique the whole way through I wonder?
when you bring up how many inches the hat is, are you measuring that after you blocked it? my question is how will i know when to start knitting the decreases before I have blocked it.
I love this pattern! I made 5 last year and was just thinking of making a few for Christmas and growing grandkids. Thanks for sharing the different ways (stitch patterns and color placement). Are you planning a MAL?
Has anyone made a Musselburgh out of single ply 100% suoerwash Merino singles? Would this yarn hold up? Or am I better off with a SW Merino nylon blend?
Great video! I looked in my projects and I have knitted 8 so far! I made scrappy ones, hand spun with my drop spindle, and long gradient color change yarn ones too!
Thank you for calling it a knitted hat and not a “beanie”. As a Canadian we might call it a toque, never a beanie. That is the hat that Jughead wore in the Archie comics.
Personally I find those hats ugly with the bit sticking up. I’m with Kent on that. Just a personal preference of course. Maybe I could just knit it a bit shorter. You have used some nice wool.
I have really enjoyed your videos up until this last few weeks Natalie. I do find that you are starting to sound like a bit of a commercial now with all the advertising you have started to do. This is just not why I subscribed to your channel. I wish you the best but will be unsubscribing. Take care.
You are so nice and knowledgeable and I enjoy learning from you, but why in God's name do we have to see your bed and your bedroom? It's so cringy and awkward....
Think Toaster must have been dreaming (his cute paws twitching in the background!)
Smart! I'm going to do this for different colors and especially for fit of my first one. Thank you for the tips!
This is how my sister has been making hunting hats for years, with one side camo the other hunter orange
That sounds way easier and more practical than increasing from the first crown using magic loop. 😊
The Hubby Hat in Ravelry does it this way.
I need a video, lol
Toaster's feet twitching in his sleep in the background is cracking me up! Such a sweet boy!
Toaster is dreaming behind you, I think he is running with the wolves! Lol
OMG! I noticed that too! I love puppy dreams! So cute!
Toaster in the background looking like a band kid, tapping his foot. 😆😆
I've only made one of these and mine, too, came out a little small. I need to do a new one!! I've loved all the different ways you've worked yours. 😊
I mane hats like that from an Elizabeth Zimmerman pattern around 1970.
I love that your dog is on the bed behind you!

Can you please do a tutorial on how to do a gauge swatch or how to read your gauge in the round? #Question
I am so glad you made this!! I’m on a journey to get one “just right” for me - on my third hat - and I love all of your input and options!!! This video is so helpful!!

This is my absolute favorite hat pattern. I make them every year for my husband, myself, and my son, and saved all the baby ones for baby on the way.
Thank God for the coming video

Great information! Currently knitting my first Musselburgh hat.
I knit one last winter and love it. I have yarn to knit 2 more. I discovered I need to make it a little longer.
Thanks so much for this information. I just bought this pattern on Sunday and was looking for some inspiration and help the cast on

Thank you, this was a great discussion. Are your yarns superwash? ❤
#question: Natalie, if you ever move back to a warm state like Texas what are you going to do with all these hats?!
Love all your hats am going to make you've inspired me do you use superwash yarn or 100 % merino 😊
Hi! If I go in between sizes, will the decreases or increases be different than in the pattern? I'm a new knitter, so I'm not fully understanding.
I bought the pattern but I’m still struggling with it. Do you have a full tutorial on this pattern
Thanks a lot!
I don’t, I’m sorry! Since this isn’t my pattern and it’s a paid pattern, I try not share too much.
Has anyone made a Musselburgh out of single ply 100% suoerwash Merino singles? Would this yarn hold up? Or am I better off with a SW Merino nylon blend?
Please do a tutorial where you switch from magic loop to circular needles. ❤
is it also possibole to crochet a musselburgh hat ?
How many inches is the crown. Can you inform me please?

It looks pretty much as an addiction 🤣
