Today, I thought it would nice to do a little comparison between a standard Seymour Duncan P90 and the new Seymour Duncan P90 Silencer, the signature pickup for Jared James Nichols!

The blue one is more tame, it does help for cleaner distorted tones, so both have their uses!

To me it's just a matter of color preference. Both sound great!
I tried the 2 in a store in Barcelona, the gold one blew my mind but I never quite liked the color but I did like the guitar as such; I tried the blue and realized that it was more suitable for me as it keeps me in tune and everything more on the limit. in addition to the color that I find spectacular (it was not an impulsive decision, since I had them on my head months ago). I recommend both, it's a matter of every 1 but try them and you will see the magic of the tone. Thank you Electric Flamingo for this kind of content :)

I still think an Olive Drab Green one would be slick. The Pelham Blue is definitely my top choice
That would be my favorite one by far if he did that. Olive Drab Green is my favorite shade of green. I want an Old Red sig, that would be sick. Or like a candy apple red JJN like this one, that would be nasty af.
@@Electric.Flamingo I have asked JJN on his page if there was gonna be any upcoming Gibson models and he just loved the comment….i play a Murphy Lab 68 Reissue and would consider getting his Sig if they ever did a Gibson
@calebmelton8254 a lot of people want the Gibson version and I feel like it would be nice for the market, but I'm all about Epiphone, my pockets aren't deep enough for a high end Gibson. lol

Hell yeah! I'm going to Tennessee on the 9th to a clinic he is putting on and taking Bluespower with me. Hoping to get to meet and jam with the man himself, since that was mentioned in the advert. 👀
They're both so cool! I would get the gold top but with the Silencer. I think you should raise the silencer pickup, that would probably fill out the tone alot. Thanks for the comparison!!!
That would be cool! I've adjusted the pickup a little and it's helped with the output a bit!
Raising will sound louder but only in certain frequencies. Low frequency have higher amplitude and high frequency have low amplitude. Inverse relationship between frequency and wave amplitude. What does this mean, the closer you get to the strings the more highs you hear but at a loss for lower frequencies.
The gold one sounds like it's set up better, less string buzz. 1st round, the pickups sounded identical on clean sounds, the humbucker was a TINY bit clearer on overdrive. Very impressive. The later bits they were close enough to identical. $250 more, the blue one just gets you a case and a different pickup. When you get older you'll outgrow the "magic" that comes with hum, string buzz, 7 1/4" radius that restricts your playing, sloppy tuners, all the things that make gigging and recording difficult will just get old. Enjoy it while you can. Good job on this video.

I actually prefer the silencer because of its softer pick attack and smoother sounds. For slow blues, or ambient music. The hum cancelling saves a lot of work in post. But if you play mostly live and just want to rock out, then the regular p90 is crunchier.

Yes, the traditional P90s just have a great sound! Don't get me wrong, I do like the Silencer, but it can't replace a straight up P90!
Skipped over the clean tones myself and listened straight to the gained up tones. Cannot tell a much significant difference or definately nothing that couldn't be adjusted to taste with the amps eq. You could always boost the hum cancelled tone with a pedal (jjn certainly does).
Well if I don't put the clean tones, people bitch, so they are there for that reason. lol. Yeah, I throw my SD-1 or my Maxon OD-808 on and it screams!
I can tell the difference but that doesn’t tell me if one is better than the other. Personal preference I prefer the original pickup but in the Blue guitar.
Wait, what??? I only got the first blind test right... Dang. I thought I had these pickups figured. I really want to pick up the P90 silenced and try with drop A, drop B tunings.

Is the pickup the only difference (aside from color) between the two? The gold is 3/4 the price of the blue. That's a good lookin' blue to be sure, but after seeing this, now I don't feel like I need to go out and buy it (too). Gold sounds great (and for $150 or less, I could get the JJN P-90). Thanks!
Bluespower has the JJN signature pickup and locking tuners. Other than that, its identical to Gold Glory in every way.

The high end sparkle is tamed with the Silencer - and that is clearly audible. This is less exciting sounding with clean and lower gain #articulation.
But for higher gain rock guitar it's a different story.

@@Electric.FlamingoThanks, That observation is a common one with noiseless pickups and dummy coils.
P90s are pretty high inductance pickups, and the steel pole screws roll off highs anyway. They tend to peak at ~2kHz, and be down ~12dB by the 4kHz+ "sparkle" range. The Silencer sounds like it mainly has lower output, as most stack types do. The increased resistance from the dummy coil would hardly affect the highs on such high inductance pickups with Steel screws. The issue may be with the orientation of the dummy coil. The outer flux lines from the strings might pass through it, creating some cancelations. It definitely sounds like the coil is further from the strings.
Blue one actually sounds quite bad in comparison to the gold. The gold is just rawer. Sounds mean and articulate
See, to me, its not bad, it's definitely different though. I noticed some differences when I would turn the volume down to clean it up a bit while distorted and it can definitely get twangy. Which, for all intents and purposes, is what JJN set out to do with the guitar in the first place, so I guess that's a good thing in my eyes.
@@Electric.Flamingo I have to admit I didn’t pay much attention to the cleans of either. I play my lp special tribute on volume 7-10 exclusively and I found the gold power definitely out performed here. Overall the blue wasn’t bad just the gold p90 I really liked.
I’ve contemplated buying one a fair few times but always found the bonding to be sloppy on each I’ve looked at. Maybe they’re not all the same but it’s why I don’t have one yet
@paulbateman81 if you watch the review I did when I first got Bluespower, that was chief complaint I had was sloppy paint work by the binding.

It's best to do the test on the same guitar. Two guitars even of the same make and model can sound very different.
I don't find that to be true, personally. My old glory and gold glory are built very similarly, and either one sounds about the same (to me anyways.)
Why would you take a pickup & get rid of it's defining feature, without the hum it just sound like a thin humbucker. If you want that twangy sound just play a tele. Leslie West would disapprove.
That's kind of what I was thinking, but it does, after some more playing around and tweaking the amp, have its benefits. I tend to play a lot of really saturated tones for metal and stuff and the noise canceling does have its benefits there in my playing.
The very reason JJN had it designed was because of their noise. He was experiencing certain venues where the 60 cycle hum was exceedingly bad and creating problems for some live performances. So he seeked a solution and found it in the "silencer".
I totally understand your sentiment and agree to a certain extent but there are pluses and minuses to be weighed and each individual now has an option to find the best pickup suited for their playing application, environment and performance needs.
How do you know Leslie West would disapprove? Did you personally ask him? He played hum canceling humbuckers in his later years. He might actually have been quite stoked to have a home canceling p90 vibe available to him had it been while he was alive.
Picked Gold Glory every time. Blues Power just seems a bit choked. Have no preference in colors. Cool guitars either way. Thanks for the review.
That seems to be the general consensus here. But, that's part of the reason I made the video, to help anyone comparing the two!
Completely unrelated: a single pickup guitar just doesn't look right. I understand what it does but still can't get over the look that it is somehow a "junior" version. So what would I do? I'd put on a second faux pickup or even a decal of a pickup, just for the aesthetics.
I will admit, I don't think I have ever heard someone's solution to a single pickup guitar being a fake pickup sticker. lol 😂

The pickup is not an issue for me. I like both of them. The reason I will never own either of these is that wrap around tail piece.
I'm curious why you say that. A lot off people don't like wrap-around tail pieces and I'm not sure why.
I have both models. I used to be put off by wraparound tailpieces, these are fine, less hassle and easy to setup. No intonation issues for me.
Unless those two guitars weigh the exact same and have similar grain structure going on under the paint, this comparison isn’t very accurate, you should swap the pick ups over to see how they both sound in the other guitar.
Well, gee, I hope the same person made it during the same moon cycle and used the same type of paint from the same manufacturer. That would make just about as much of a difference as what you just said.
Personally I prefer the non silencer ....I think lol. The gold one sounds more Gibson like if that makes sense AND I prefer that sound but I prefer the look of the blue guitar for this model at least. Whats the weight of these? Eeewww dude that was weird lol.
They both weigh just shy of 9 pounds, both probably around 8lb 10oz.

My Revstar is 8 lbs and I find the weight just acceptable. For me, the New Gibson LP modern light may be worth looking at, but at $2000 it's overpriced in my opinion and that's where Epiphone fits the bill nicely! Hopefully Epiphone will follow and make the modern light.

The Gold sounded best when I could see the guitar but in a blind test I preferred blues power hands down. It was the one I chose every round and I thought it was the gold one. Guess blues power is the real winner!!!

Gold Glory sounds way "meaner" like an unbridled wild stallion! The pelham blue sounds like a trained pony by comparison.
It's interesting that everyone is saying that. But I get it, when you take away the main thing people like about P90s, the buzz and dirt, it does sound "contained."
To me, still very much a usable sound, but definitely not as "mean."

Blues power will work better in a live and recording situation. As an experienced Musician the gold one may be the one for many in comments. But that noise will certainly piss you off after a while. I have seen Jared many times and played many of his actual guitars he uses live including Dorothy. The blue one is great. I also have an old glory. In the throws of a live performance you will appreciate the lack of noise.
And I'm sure that's part of the reason he had this pickup made for him. If it works, it works! All of his guitars are fantastic and some of my favorites, but you're right about the live situation thing.
