Bought my first set of toneriders for a 3 pick up epiphone SG custom I rebuilt recently. I used the Birmingham Alnico 5 set for bridge and middle and a Vintage Alnico 2 one for the neck. The guitar is now a salivating wild beast!!!! I'll consider a set of P90's for my Noventa Stratocaster after my experience and this video 👍👍
The neck Tonerider sounds like a good upgrade, the bridge sounds similar to the original Epiphone, so not worth swapping out in my view. Good video! Tonerider/Epiphone v Seymour Duncan comparison would be interesting to see if its worth going the whole hog!
I absolutely love Tonerider pickups & think they’re best of the budget brands. I put some of the p90s in a Chinese Tokai I bought & was disappointed with. Made a massive improvement.
Thanks for your review. I have Tonerider Alnico 2 Classics in a Samick Les Paul and a Rebel 90 in an Epi Junior. The Rebel is a P90 in a humbuckers format. I think the Toneriders sound great!!
I use Tonerider, mostly A4 PAF's for years. Honestly, I can not find big name pickups (Dimarzio, SD, Gibson) which sound better. They are clean winners.
I have tonerider generator set (alnico 5) in a Harley benton sc custom and their rocksong set (overwound alnico 2) in a 'flipped' custom randy Rhodes flying v guitar (long part of the V has 4 pots and 3way switch in a line as I wanted les paul style control and push pull pots lol) I made out of a 200year old antique walnut dresser that I got in an auction lol Both sets are amazing pickups and worth checking out of you plan any upgrades in the near future. Had them for 2 years and they consistently sit around the top of the best sounding guitars I own even though the collection is getting out of hand.
I believe they are made in the far east but source their materials from Japan and they are scatter wound which I believe is quite a rarity for budget pickups. Personally, I play an Epiphone Wilshire and I have noticed Ephiphones typically mount their bridge pickups quite a far distance from the bridge causing not as much treble, top end and so personally I would invest in the vintage P90s for more top end on the bridge pickup. Many thanks for the enlightenment and demo. Cheers.
I can’t hear the difference between the stock and the TR9s tbh… the difference must be lost between the recording and UA-cam 🤷🏻♂ The p90’s in my teleplayer are muddy asf… I changed the wiring first and it did nothing to improve the tone… now it’s time to fit a different set of pickups.
The ToneRider neck is definitely warmer than the stock Epiphone. I’m not sure the change was warranted to ToneRider change. I have a vintage Les Paul Jr. DC with an original Gibson P90. I also have owned a Hertiage H137 with Lollar P90’s and Luther Lee P90’s. Both are excellent choices especially with overdrive! You can make a good guitar a great guitar with good upgraded pickups!
Unless you’re a guitar snob then maybe it’s worth it but for me the tone isn’t too noticeable unless you know what you’re listening for sell for me, the price isn’t worth it. I would rather save to get more money to get a more noticeable tone if the pick ups were super cheap and crappy, then I would spend the money on this. The upgrade would be worth it.
I'm looking at these for my 3 P90 Vintage V6P they came stock with P90's I am wondering about getting a set of Tonerider Vintage for the neck and middle , Hot P90 for the bridge those Toneriders sound great ,
@PherotoneStudios I've heard you wax lyrical about Toneriders, looking to swap out some humbuckers in a SG copy for P90s...are the Iron Gear Alchemists decent/comparable to the Tonerider Rebel 90s?
What did you do with the guitar? It looks awesome! Did you strip the poly and repaint it or just sanded it? I have the same model and I've been thinking about sanding it a little to show the grain cause paint seems very thick. I'd love to see how to do this and not mess it up ☺️
I've been looking for what most musicians consider the "best" P90s, to invest in for my next LP Junior. I simply don't want a Gibson, and though I do have a Harley Benton, there's a huge difference in quality, as expected, when compared to the Epiphone. I'll pay more to keep things near-shore (I'm in Canada), meaning American or Canadian made, but look what you're getting with a LP Junior - a small, unimaginative slab of wood & the most generic electronics. No reason even the best LP Jr should cost more than $1500 CDN ($1100 USD). I'd like to get the guitar, replace the tuners, nut & strings, then shop for the best P90s on the market. I was surprised to find Fender's P90s to be far better sounding than the Gibsons. Certainly there's preference re: "better", but I'd like to hear from you guys & your subscribers, what's the best P90 you can buy now? When I say "price be damned", I mean production/boutique, not full-boutique.
Pickup snobs are the same as wine snobs or bourbon snobs. Take a blind test and tell me which is better. The results are always hilarious. The mind is an amazing thing to make you think something is superior.
Useful thanks, no disrespect, but, just for the record are you buying these pickups yourself and not receiving any benefit from Tonerider? I'm looking at some P90's for a project, I was thinking about Entwhistle or maybe Wilkinson, would you say Tonerider are better, the cost difference isn't important.
We bought these, well Steve did. Full price. Great pickups and I would recommend them over Wilkinson and entwistle. They’re as good as a set of SD’s Wish they did mini humbuckers
Not a Chinese epiphone. US or Japanese. Pots caps everything is better quality than the Chinese version. Just a side point...an extremely valid one! Nice job though
Toneriders are very good, and as we heard have more clarity and presence than stock EPI ones. But there is such a thing as guitar voodoo. If I think my gear is better I will play it with a positive attitude and it will bear the anticipated results.🌞
Damn the Noise /hum is horrible .. i just ordered the Seymour Duncan Silencer p90's for neck and the JJN silencer for the bridge Replacing the p90's in my Sire Larry Carlton LP p90 guitar ... stock Horrible also good if you play low volume , forget about turning on a pedal .. Bad !!!!!
I had a Seymour jazz in the neck of my teli and swapped it to s rebel90 by tonerider. Super happy.

They’re the pickups I’m going for in an SAS (set neck) in HSS
I love that riff at 4:02 reminds me of old fei comodo
In minute 4:02 interesting to hear that, so bright overdrive and remind me to RATM

Sounds awesome. Such a good upgrade which has now made this guitar perfect! 🤘 Thanks mate

Stock pups sounds OK. Just a differnce in tonality. Use the tone control.
There’s so much reverb saturation it’s hard to tell. Try playing the demo clean so we can hear the differences before you layer in all the effects.
you'd think that would be default first thing especially with experienced guitarists.

They are Chinese made in china from Chinese materials. Chinese have a lot of good stuff to offer if you pay them.
I have humbucker size Tonerider Rebel 90's in my SG. Great for early Iommi style sounds.
the neck is really nice; the bridge is a bit strident for my liking. guess that could be overcome by switching the magnets to A2, maybe?
Ive become a Tonerider fan!
Beautiful clean tone. Is it Stacked (double coil) inside ? ANy noise ?
Those p90s sound great. Do the Vintage neck and Hot bridge still work with RWRP in the middle position? thx

I had Gibson Midtown with burstbakers, but I replaced pricy Gibson bridge A2 with Tonerider A4. Much better sound.
The tone rider in the neck is clearer than the Epiphone but the bridge sounds 99% like the Epiphone.
I’m torn honestly if I could just have the low end a little higher on the epiphone neck it’d be perfect

Have you tried GFS pickups?

I haven’t tried Iron Gear yet but I have done some research and they look well made

Steve took a sander to it. Feels lovely to play now. Especially the neck
It looks now more like my Epiphone Les Paul Special 1(the one with P90s but only 1 vol 1 tone)
Can I ask what upgraded wraparound tailpiece is in the Epiphone special?

I like the stock

@@PherotoneStudios Many thanks, sorry, would say they are better than Warman, (assuming you've tried them). Cheers.
The Tonerider p90s are fantastic. I put them in one of my Gibson’s a few months ago.
Oh wow, which set?
Definitely better than Warman. From what I’ve seen, warman tend to use cheaper parts. These are a definitely a step up
Where can you buy these?
not much appreciable difference, but hey love p90s
Tonerider are so much smoother

Can not tell much about the pickups noise.
Not much different, really. If I'm gonna upgrade pickups, might as well get a trusted brand.
Why? They are just pickups. Not much can go wrong with them!
BRIDGE PICKUP TOO BRIGHT, NOT ENOUGH LOW MIDS UNLESS THE TONE KNOB WAS ON 10?
Probably stock and these pickups are made in the same artec factory...
Next time you wanna use someone's name as a cuss word, try your mother's.
