Here I wanted to explain that having your ingredients down to a comfortable level lets you play from the heart. I hope you enjoy the journey and learning what Eddie Hazel saw in this masterpiece.

I read about this song and it’s back story... first time I ever listened to it I was on mushrooms and cried like a baby... went out the next day and bought a guitar... this is single handed the song that made me get in to guitar

Me too, I've just bought my first guitar. My wife has just tragically died way too young. Maggot Brain is so important for my bereavement, my daughters' and I are now learning guitar together. I don't know how this incredible piece of music holds you up through grief, but that is certainly the case for me & many others I am sure. Peace to everyone who lives with the grief of the loss of a loved one.

@@StichMethodGuitar his name was Dan Becker he actually used to own a guitar shop and had his own brand of guitar called Becker Guitars I have a few that he made. He would always show me your videos and tell me that they were perfect for me to get my theory and soloing better, to get that mental side of guitar. So I’ve been watching lots of your videos especially the Grateful Dead ones my dads got me into them a while back. He’s introduced me to so much good music and gotten me into playing instruments, u guys woulda gotten along great. "Bends bring emotion", would love video just covering things like this, the nuances, not necessarily specific licks from songs, but some generic ideas. I struggle to know when to bend or slide or apply vibrato, etc., or what some good contenders are, ie, bending the 4th to the 5th seems to always sound good. That would be an epic video/chat.

Thank you for this incredible video. If the myth is true and Eddie Hazel being told to imagine he'd just been told that his Mother had died whilst tripping on acid, - it didn't appear that you, yourself were(!) - you've managed to find a way to get into the same headspace as he was in just over fifty years ago. You are an amazing player and have inspired me to keep plugging away at trying to emulate the much under-appreciated Eddie Hazel's otherworldly genius. Thank you again!

  • @icu12bme2

On Hazel research- he was tripping HARD when he recorded this and it was VERY "in the moment". Thats not an endorsement for acid, but he was in a rush to roll RIGHT NOW. It was pouring out of him.
Hence, they wouldnt LET him get lost in his pedals. He has a distortion pedal he's listening to and they recorded the performance CLEAN and added the effects later in production.
Lesson- for these "perfect" psychedelic solos, do just that. Put your looper first in line, and get wacky with your effects in playback.
