- Stay to the end for a demo of playing from your heart. I was introduced to "Maggot Brain' about 4 years ago. It has been a popular request amongst fans of the channel. Here I wanted to explain that having your ingredients down to a comfortable level lets you play from the heart. I hope you enjoy the journey and learning what Eddie Hazel saw in this masterpiece.

I read about this song and it’s back story... first time I ever listened to it I was on mushrooms and cried like a baby... went out the next day and bought a guitar... this is single handed the song that made me get in to guitar
Absolute master piece! Same dude this song is the reason why I bought an electric guitar!
The way Hazel projected his emotions through a guitar was extremely incredible
legends
Lol me too cried a couple of times
same actually. Stich should go on tour and play all this stuff. I'd love to see him live.
Me too, I've just bought my first guitar. My wife has just tragically died way too young. Maggot Brain is so important for my bereavement, my daughters' and I are now learning guitar together. I don't know how this incredible piece of music holds you up through grief, but that is certainly the case for me & many others I am sure. Peace to everyone who lives with the grief of the loss of a loved one.
underrated player....and he was a kind soul
So true
My dad recently and untimely passed on. Before he did he was showing me all of your videos and we used to jam maggot brain together, so coming across this video is amazing. You have the greatest guitar channel keep up the grind
What was your Dads name? He showed you my videos? That warms my heart.
@@StichMethodGuitar his name was Dan Becker he actually used to own a guitar shop and had his own brand of guitar called Becker Guitars I have a few that he made. He would always show me your videos and tell me that they were perfect for me to get my theory and soloing better, to get that mental side of guitar. So I’ve been watching lots of your videos especially the Grateful Dead ones my dads got me into them a while back. He’s introduced me to so much good music and gotten me into playing instruments, u guys woulda gotten along great. Anyway I just wanted to let u know, and to let u know how great your channel is I’m thinking of him every time I watch
Thank you so much for this, I’m 57 years old and have never heard of Eddie until this video. What an amazing musician! The world lost one incredible soul when this man passed away. He truly played from the ❤️
Check out the alternative mix version at the end of that album and his tribute to Hendrix concert particularly Voodoo Child
PPS- those one string pentatonic runs on this jam is how I accidentally taught myself all the "box" positions. If you know it on every string, it aint even boxes anymore. Its just natural combinations...
“MOTHER EARTH IS PREGNANT FOR THE THIRD TIME”
Yes yes yes! Thank you for this! One of my favorite and most emotionally evoking solos ever!
I hope you enjoy it
@@StichMethodGuitar as always! And that closing solo is 🔥🔥🔥
Your content is filling a huge void for medium-advanced players. Thank you so much for igniting the passion in my guitar playing again, I did not dream of improving as much as I have after I found your channel
"Bends bring emotion", would love video just covering things like this, the nuances, not necessarily specific licks from songs, but some generic ideas. I struggle to know when to bend or slide or apply vibrato, etc., or what some good contenders are, ie, bending the 4th to the 5th seems to always sound good. That would be an epic video/chat.
Just love so much Maggot Brain and your insight into the mechanics and the soul of the track has been really helpful. Thank you!
Thanks so much! So glad you dug the video!
One of my first favorite guitar solos from back in the day! THX MAN!!
Thanks for shining some light on the great Eddie Hazel!
You are such an amazing teacher. Thank you for covering such a powerful and way too often overlooked performance by an underrated master.
Thanks for doing Eddie, love you for this one man!
Just got my first electric guitar in 35 years and this lesson was right on time! Thanks so much!
God Stich, why has it taken this long to do Maggot Brain. Mate you made this lesson so interesting, love how you break it down. Thank you for your time.
Fantastic lesson. Cannot understand why anyone would down tick this.
To attempt to distill the thought, my take on it is. You can play from the heart, but you need the tools at your disposal to translate from the heart to the fingertrips.
Ian, you are just the best in your explanations, demonstrations, facial emotions. Just love watching and listening to you.
Wow! A friend of mine just turned me on to this album, like a month ago. And I loved it! Now this awesome lesson, so weird how the universe works.
🙏🎸🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🙏❤❤❤❤❤🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🕺🕺🕺🕺🕺🕺🕺🕺
From the heart. This sort of playing is the sound of the soul. I've always thought of playing and creating music as a spiritual endeavor. Thanks for putting this out there, and I hope we hear more music from the heart as a result of this great lesson.
Beautiful tone. I love improvising over these chords. Good way to let out some of those deeper human emotions. Good thoughts bad thoughts is another great funkadelic progression for this.
Thank you for this incredible video. If the myth is true and Eddie Hazel being told to imagine he'd just been told that his Mother had died whilst tripping on acid, - it didn't appear that you, yourself were(!) - you've managed to find a way to get into the same headspace as he was in just over fifty years ago. You are an amazing player and have inspired me to keep plugging away at trying to emulate the much under-appreciated Eddie Hazel's otherworldly genius. Thank you again!
Awesome lesson, you left me realizing I have a lot more to learn than I thought (which is a good thing). This is one of those songs that keeps me wanting to get better
Whoa, glad I found this channel. I've been wanting to learn how to approach and play this jam since I first heard it in the mid to late 70's. Thank you so much!
I just found Maggot Brain in the last couple weeks. OMG! Love it! Amazing instrumental song.
One of the greatest guitar solos from one of the greatest guitar players. You broke it down well. Awesome thumbnail too! 🎸
there is a video on UA-cam of Nels Kline and Mike Watt covering Maggot Brain. It’s amazing.
Thanks man love this song! Know it from 'Before the Beginning' of John Frusciante, which is inspired by this
This is the first video I’ve genuinely enjoyed in such a long time
I just learned about this album and Eddie a few weeks ago. Amazing player!
I really appreciated this video. Thanks for making.
Incredible lesson - with all the heart and soul of Eddie. Subbed.
Love me some maggot brain ... and hearing the story behind how Eddie was inspired to create this masterpiece makes it all that much more incredible ..I won’t get into that inspiration assuming your gonna in this vid but he seems to have really gotten into that mindset(s) when making the lead
This was a very helpful video. Thanks!
Excellently done! Thank you!
Thank you sir...you are the BEST!!! Love your lessons...
Omg, i was just learning this a few weeks ago! You're awesome! Watching now!!!!
This is just freakin’ fantastic!
Nice lesson! This is a very difficult easy song, or an easy difficult song. What I'm trying to say is that you wanna get it right it's a hell of a job but at the same time even without much technique it's good.
Thank you so much for doing this...!!!
Two hours of my life gone in the blink of an eye. But I consider it time well spent. And I still have 9 minutes left to the video! But my wrist is done for the day. I’ll tackle the rest tomorrow.
Thanks Ian!
My left hand has been numb all week
Amazing breakdown of this classic. Much thanks.
Excellent very helpful and informative...thanks..
Such a Great song!! Thank you Ian.
Great tutorial &
Lovely lead, from the heart 👌🏼👍🏻
Great musicianship!!!!
Great lesson, Ian. Thanks
This is a fantastic video!!! Thx!
Great lesson! Nice playing!
amazing video thank you!
Excellent video my dude! I'm eternally grateful for what you taught Me today.
Man what a video lesson! Hope to see more, and lessons about superimposing pentatonics. Be safe Stich
OMG dude you frick blow my mind with your soul playing..thanks
This is a Great tutorial!
Thanks Ian! I'm supposed to be working not looping for an hour!
Fantastic tutorial and an awesome primer on bends as well!
hung around til the end. worth it.
Thanks!
Thanks a lot for this
Kind of Gilmore-esque with those bends Ian. Reminds me a little of Shine On You Crazy Diamond. Some of the best playing I think you’ve done on your channel.
This song predates Shine by 4 years. Wonder if Dave was listening to Eddie?
On Hazel research- he was tripping HARD when he recorded this and it was VERY "in the moment". Thats not an endorsement for acid, but he was in a rush to roll RIGHT NOW. It was pouring out of him.
Hence, they wouldnt LET him get lost in his pedals. He has a distortion pedal he's listening to and they recorded the performance CLEAN and added the effects later in production.
Lesson- for these "perfect" psychedelic solos, do just that. Put your looper first in line, and get wacky with your effects in playback.
Beautiful
Just subscribed. Keep up the great content!
Love it!!!
Love it. How about a video on I’ll Stay?
Fantastic video!
Saw Eric McFadden perform maggot Brain with warren Haynes and Govt mule in 2017. Was insane!!!
Dude !! You such a cool dude 😊
soooooo gooood thanks bud
More funkadelic videos please
Damn Stich, congrats on the podcast!
I wish i can play like u👌❤❤❤🥰🥰🎸🎸🎸🌹🕺🕺🕺🕺👍👍👍👍🙏👌👌👌
E Dorian is also the sound of Michael Schenker's "Rock Bottom" solo.
One of the best ever
I love your videos bro
Thank you! Means a lot.
Stich, have you heard John Frusciante do a cover called 'Before the Beginning'?? Thanks so much man! :)
The Empyrean! Best album ever done?!
@@Joe-cw5rp Easily
Do the same with Allmans!
I think Eddie Hazel is the best out of everybody even Jimmy he was all right but he can't touch Eddie Hazel
Ian, can I find your lessons from this video on patreon, in the complete stitch method practice sessions??
Indeed you can, if you look in the description box of this UA-cam video they are linked there... you will also have access to over 380 other practice sessions
Looking at your tiers on your patreon page, I'm a bit past beginner, but not yet novice. If I signed on for the complete stichmethod practice sessions, would I be able to access your guitar fundamentals practice sessions as well?? Sorry to keep bugging you.
It’s all good and yes... you will have access to every post including the fundamentals practice sessions
Question: If the key is Em, why is Em not the I Chord? Am I missing something there?
Thanks for all your lessons Stich!
Really the parent Key is G.... the Em is the 6th known as the relative minor.... in reality I would say this is a 6 5 2 3 in G.... which is an E aeolian progression
@@StichMethodGuitar Trying to wrap my brain on this one - so, if I'm playing over an A minor 12-bar blues, I'm really over top of a progression in C and on the 6m, 2m, and 3m chords, rather than a minor 1, 4, 5?
Yes, watch my understanding modes video. But your example is correct
@@StichMethodGuitar Thanks man! Love your videos, appreciate your heart for teaching.
I wonder if Mike Oldfield had heard this?
Glad to hear Stich is a P-Funk fan, this made my day!
STELLAR!!!!!
People: "how to play guitar from heart?"
Stich: "learn chords, chords, chords, chords"
You got to learn your chords😬
@@StichMethodGuitar Oh yes mr stitch, after some years following you I got all my chords, triads, intervals down. Now that the guitar is kinda fully mapped, I can follow through with so much ease deep-dives on artist minds, your lessons, whatever comes or I find interesting and I want to learn.
New guitar?
You’ll see soon😉
Yes, I like my own comments.
It would be a bit disconcerting for one to post comments they didn't like.
First
If you really want to play from the heart, dont learn tutorials. Go put on a backing track and channel the Eddie vibes yourself to make your own creative hybrid style. That being said, great tutorial!
How can a beginner guitarist in their early fifties with a passion and love for playing who wants to play from the heart, make a transition into making a living as a musician?
By doing it. You have all the ingredients there. So, not how, but when. Trust and work.
🙏
Fantastic lesson! Thank you.
