- BEST performance of Maggot Brain I have EVER seen...completely ludicrous face-melting guitar.
As per request:
"Dude you need to post a warning. This video will melt your face and the face of anyone standing within 40 feet. Please, before it melts the face of someone I care about."
Here's your posted WARNING, kind sir.
Imagine Hazel and Hendrix jamming wherever souls go when they leave this earth.
And Garcia and Prince and all the fallen gods of music over time🤘 that's what I picture too🎸
Jimi still giving them guitar lessons. 🎸
would LOVE TO HEAR THAT!!!
@@savemyself100 Roy Buchanan is teaching Jimi.
@@chocolategravyandbiscuits8418 You been putting Majic Mushroom in your gravy , eating Hash Biscuits. 😂
Mr. Hazel doesn't get the recognition he truly deserves for this masterpiece
BS he doesn't. This is considered by MANY to be one of the best solos ever written. On ANY instrument.
Such a Shame !!!!
Guitar hero Eddie could rock with the best if them
@@blazer6248 You are correct that amongst people who know this is hailed as a modern guitar classic. You are also wrong for with just this one song Eddie Hazel's name should be patently revered alongside the Claptons, Becks and Hendrixs of the world and it clearly is not.
Very true indeed! And the utterly amazing original recording was no doubt aided by the fact that George Clinton told Eddie to imagine the feeling he would have if he’d just been told his mother had died. Which sounds a very strange thing to ask someone to think about at any time never mind when recording a guitar solo but boy did it bring out so much emotion and feeling in Eddie’s playing.
That is no fog.. That is the smoke coming from the joints in his fingers for shredding beyond physical comprehension. Unreal.
just wanted to thank everyone that has commented on this video. it's really opened my eyes to all the pfunk fans..gotta keep the funk alive!
This video is for everyone to enjoy, no matter what age, race, or religious views any one of you may have. No arguments please, just enjoy the mind lifting power this song is trying to provide. Thank you.
I've been obsessed with the guitar since the mid-late 80's, but somehow have never heard this. Heard EH was a great funk player, heard the P-Funk hits, but obviously didn't KNOW Eddie Hazel. Man Prince is all over this! Reid and Mac Alpine(maybe Rocky George) were the only rock (not fusion) black guitarist that I really knew about when I was a kid. I'm glad there are still great players out there (of all bkgds) to discover. Thank you for this video. Wow
My religion is Buckethead :p
+Keith Williams I've been obsessed with guitar for even longer and I'm just catching up with Michael Hampton. I'm embarrassed. Can't believe how good these guys are.
standingwave73 you should look up "animal behavior outro" by Praxis, or sail on soothsayer, padmasana, fractal shadows,... by buckethead :)
tGhIeNrGmEiRte Thanks, I'll do that.
I actually shedded a tear, man I was at this concert at the Capital Center, never knew I was witnessing history, but I knew it was special damn,RIP Eddie 🙌🏾💪🏾🙏🏾🔥🔥
This specific semi poor quality video changed my life in 10th grade when I found it .. I can only imagine what witnessing it live would’ve done for me. Absolutely legendary
“A Tear for Eddie” by Ween. Check it out. Especially the version from Live at Stubbs
How’d it feel to be in the presence of
_Lord Hazel_
there will never be another eddie hazel! rest in peace my brother! your music made us all have hope.
pyscho man Amen brotha 🤙
Another Eddie? Have you heard of Michael Hampton who's playing with him here?
@@lenini056Eddie created the songs Mike just copied
Sorry sir my Hope is in Jesus… but yes this solo is the best
God Bless Eddie Hazel........
Hey Samuel,what year ?
First, all people are not created equal, with the same ability or opportunities, said to be due to or ancestors's and our decision not to follow God's guidance.People wish blessings on people for sneezing. This post is about Eddie Hazel's unmistakable talent of conveying emotion through his guitar.....GET IT ON EDDIE.....
This IS the BEST version of Maggot Brain! I saw this tour when it hit Ohio back in the day. What really blew my mind was Maceo busting out the flute on the intro.
the best version was the studio version, which was recorded in one take :)
+Very Fast to each their own. I'll listen to any number of versions depending on the mood and level of emotion. funk takes on many forms
+Hazel is God that it does
Very Fast this was a one take as well
Maceo Parker?
That was the fastest 8 minutes and 53 seconds of my life. Never have I felt so absorbed in a guitar solo before.
I could watch this all day every day for the rest of my life and not get bored. Absolutely GENIUS shredding going on here
Both Eddie Hazel and Mike Hampton freaking smoking and killing in this version. the best one ever!!! Speechless every time I hear it...
And having black bird in tha back ground
Check out a version done in 2011 jazz festival with and artist named LILI HADON AND KID FUNKADELIC MIKE HAMPTON
Look at how mike keeps looking at Hazel. He's like damnn thats good.
they should teach this song in every guitar class
Seriously, if you love someone who doesn't know the insane emotion or soul put into this work of art and feel they aren't ready, don't show them they will have their brain melted. The first time I heard the title I was like "sounds like some death metal" but boy was I wrong. My brother showed me this song. I had to take a break because it felt like I was getting pulled in to a world I knew nothing about. Crazy. May his soul rest in peace amongst the stars of our universe. Beautiful souls. Glad to say I have listened to this song religiously for many days on end. I have to hear it at least once a day
George Clinton told him to play this song like he just heard his mother died
It's a direct connection to whatever gives us life.
The day I heard it I was coming from a concert, I was a bit tired. Arriving at dawn, my friend and I met a neighbor of his, she invited us to go to her apartment and between the talk of good bohemian anecdotes she put on this song and blew my brains out.
Two Guitar Beasts in action... The Legendary Eddie Hazel and Michael "Kidd Funkadelic" Hampton! One EPIC performance! **R.I.P. EDDIE "MAGGOT BRAIN" HAZEL**
This is TOO good! This song was played at Eddie's funeral. R.I.P to the greatest.
when i really need to be lifted, i come here eddie and mike together, it dont get mo better
Brutally and beautifully honest playing, like fresh cut roses on a Sunday morning.
ALWAYS get GOOSEBUMPS during this song! This is a KILLER version!
Blessings & Light!
Always no matter how long or old I am I'll play this and remember the good old 70 .and had the pleasure of being tiki fulwood next door neighbor. And picking me up from work. Partying with yall miss yall
I have tasted the mind of the universe. ......
The US Funk Mob, the best band ever! Hazel was maybe the greatest guitarist ever (he's definitely in the discussion), Hampton played in his shadow, but is very good too, Clinton was a genius, Bernie was great on the keyboards, must I go on? This band was ahead of it's time. RIP to all of them that have moved on to the next life.
bernie's a fucking beast. pure genius. like someone else said on a youtube comment, he's like beethoven or bach on acid. atmosphere and tales of kidd funkadelic are masterpieces. way ahead of their time. he spawned an entire generation of g-funk.
garry shider and his soulful voice. and glenn goins - man, he tied way too young. that man had a heck of a voice.
+Blaine Snow cosey like hazel was influenced by Hendrix miles and George told all their guitar players to listen to Hendrix before recording
How can you call Clinton a genius? . He didn't write one note.. He just sponged off others talent. Fluffing brilliant musicians is what any basic stripper can do 😂
+Reezer83 sorry but George is a songwriter and gave write a majority of the songs lyrics and if you check his credits yiu will find that george been writing g since the sixties but yes he sing lead in a bunch if parliament and funkadelic tracks
Larry Dillon you forgot another funk genius who was George's counterpart. Bootsy Collins who's also the funkiest bass player.
1 of the greatest songs ever written! 1 of the greatest songs ever recorded! 1 of the greatest guitarists on the planet....eddie hazel...1 of the greatest bands on this earth..ty ty ty funkadelic George Clinton rip eddie rip gary I am so blessed to have grown up to hearing AND seeing this band live!
Me too my brother....me too
I WAS AT THIS CONCERT, THE VERY BEST THAT HAVE HEARD FROM THESE TWO, AND I HAVE SEEN THEM MANY TIMES !!1
This song can literally make you weep - was our household anthem back in the day...been far too long since I last listened to this..... * hamster melts into keyboard*......
hamstergirl4444 welcome back
I've stumbled upon greatness here. this solo has changed my life the first time I heard it
one man playing his soul out , I listen to this song 5 times a day,its just my opinion but for me eddie was the best ever
Absolutely astounding rendition of this melancholic classic. Eddie & Michael are still incredibly underrated. The true virtuosos of funk-rock guitar.
Dammit, my face just melted all over my keyboard. Should've listened to the warning.
I was at this show! We gave Eddie Hazel and his girlfriend a lift afterwords.
no u didn't stop already nobody believes u
I believe that. I wish I could've seen him live
lol I was his girlfriend the week before! San Carlos, California.
I was also his girlfriend as well
I too was his girlfriend.
Eddie AND Michael!? Too awesome
+Kelly Moon exactly
2 awesomes being too awesome. Ever funkin on Baba🤘🏽🕶️💜🛸
Two awesome
Mike Hampton got into Funkadelic playing this for George when Eddie got locked in 1973. hHe never tried to outshine Eddie when he got out and the two of them together fucking song up until Eddie Hazel left this world. Many people including cats from Funkadelic played it.But only one owns it.Rest In Peace With Power In Paradise Eddie Hazel🎸
saw this so many times, still blows my mind.
I just "discovered" Eddie Hazel. I am in awe, and this performance is astounding. This is soul-wounding. Thank you for posting this.
Best version of Maggot Brain ever. Eddie & Mike take it to a whole new level here. PURE GUITARGASM!!!
I was their at this concert. Festival style seating . The capitol centre was unbelievable. Smoking 🚬 joints high as the sky jamin . The good ole days . We wasn't playing
oh most definitely, this video is so insane...def the best version of this song I've ever heard
Eddie was a Monster! This should've been the album version
This is so incredible and to have Eddie and Mike jamming and complimenting each other exchanging vibes and harmonies. I met them both in 1970. My heart was still racing even though they were done because they were still in MY brain. What an experience!!!!
the best guitar solo of all time!
It's an amazing solo no doubt. Jimi Hendrix Machine Gun is still my all time favorite solo.
These superlatives bore me. And, of course, he's god.
...This was fuckin insane
This screams the influence it had on PRINCE
eddie plays through his soul, that cannot be topped...such emotion
I feel that this song is so powerful it's even spiritual. I can't believe how stunned i always get with Maggot Brain, Garry Shider defined it "A Brother crying his Soul out" and i totally agree. I'd also say that Maggot Brain is a scream to death, a realization of the bond between life and death.
Pure magic
cosmic tears of gold
communing at the edge of the multiverse
This is one the all time greatest performances ever. I can’t imagine being there for this
I've watched this so many times and I still get chills, This is the true definition of a diva.
sober this is amazing, stoned this is like hitting me deep in my soul in an inexplicable way. Literally feel and experience all the emotion in his passionate guitar playing. This I'd absolute art
and then on acid..
you become god
+Adam Bawley
... or at least you think you are ... illusions ... lol
So fucking epic. Is there not any better quality audio and video for this God of a man live?
One of the most underrated guitarist ever R.I.P.
EXACTLY correct, Eddie Hazel ! ✌
i would give literally EVERYTHING I own to see this performance live,
God, why was i born ten years AFTER this fucking performance...
R.N.P. RALPH ....THIS WAS A SONG THAT WOULD TAKE YOU TO ANOTHER PLACE WITH OUT MOVING.... IT'S BEEN OVER 40 YEARS AN IT STILL SOUND GOOD TO ME....
Em, D, Bm, C repeat. Forever
This is awesome guitar work. I remember when they first put it out, everybody was in awe of this cut! It still affects me the same way it did back then.....awesome!
I seen this awesome lineup at the Philly Spectrum, little did I know what I was witnessing, play on 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🕺🏾🕺🏾🕺🏾🕺🏾
A friend of mine just turned me onto Eddie Hazel about a week ago...... and I can't stop listening to him. I have devoured the internet and UA-cam for anything Eddie Hazel that I can get my hands on. The more I listen to him, the more I am blown away.
Check out comic slop
This is some NASTINESS!!!!
All I can say is, I was there! I was in guitar heaven! I actually talked to him about that concert and he said He consciously tried to outplay Mike 'cause he felt that people had forgotten that HE did the song first. He felt that Mike played it too straight up and he tried to play around with it to make Mike look bad. It's obvious that Mike knew he would try something like that, 'cause this is the most lively version I've ever heard Mike do!
Jj_Rj_ Gaming BS. I know Mike personally as well as other musicians who were close to Eddie and have talked to them about this issue. Short answer: there was no beef between them or one trying to make the other look bad. Eddie's place in history was secure. Michael was The Next One. Period.
funkpunkandroll well said, man
Well said
What happened to all the real players? The wimpy little artist of today lack everything that made a good artist Great! The Soul, The feeling, the ability to lose themselves in the moment and shred unlike anything you ever heard no longer seems to exist in the rappie poppie crap of this generation. Thank you You Tube and all you wonderful people who upload the great artist from the greatest period in Rock and modern music history. To those of us who appreciate this CHEERS!!!
Two of the Best Ever at the to of their game! I wasn't at this show, but I did have the pleasure of seeing them, and hearing this masterpiece twice. RIP Eddie We all miss you!
That indescribable performance melted my face, my brain, and part of my spleen. Much due respect to both Eddie (R.I.P.) and Michael. I hope we can stop comparing these two guitar gods (Jimi and Ernie too).
Approaching HALF A MILLION VIEWS!!! You all seriously kick ass, so many great comments about Eddie and PFUNK and just FUNKN' life in general, so damn good! Everyone should show this video to at least one friend that has never seen it, they deserve that much! Looks like a few more brains have been melted recently bringing the death toll to 21.. gotta love the power of PFUNK!!!
Long live Eddie Hazel. This is his spirit poured into this song. I can feel him & Michael Hampton talking from the soul.
oh my good gracious what did i just witness?!?!?!
POWER AND LOVE, pure classic.
Eddie Hazel forever.
This is some of the greatest stuff I've had the priveledge of hearing!
Hazel made me feel so good right now. And i don't care how it sounds. He weeps with his guitar. and I've felt it. It's so good!
Look at Kidd Funkadelic admiring his idol 🕺🏾🕺🏾🕺🏾🎶🎶🤜🏾
eddie really brought out the best im hampton, probably even vice versa
Hampton's whole career, was mimicking Eddie. That's how George found him, playing Eddie's music. Personally, I prefer Black Bird McKnight over Mike Hampton. But Eddie Hazel will always be my number 1 favorite guitarist. Prince, my second. ✌
If there's a Rock and Roll heaven, you know they have a HELLUVA band, brother.
Jack I listen to this song and feel so many emotions this was two years before my birth but man what I wouldn’t give to go in a time machine to hear this live and in person!!!!!
I watch this video a couple times a week. You are the best for posting this
Maceo flute, Eddie, Mike guitars, rodney bass & Dennis Chambers on drums
Dennis is insane on the drums!
This is great, only wish Eddie had played it alone, or if someone would post a version with him only. Michael plays the hell outta this every time, but Eddie's soul takes it to another level.
Two great players with different styles. No need to pit them against each other. Be appreciative of the fact they shared the stage and it was captured on video.
Absolutely takes my breath away! That was unbelievable.
Thine faces have melted.
Friends beware, heed the warning and turn back now, before thine faces hath malted from thine skulls, and onto your keyboards.
R.I.P Eddie
ClonicTonic your comment wins the world.
Eddie Hazel, Michael Hampton, Boogie or Skeets, Dennis Chambers on drums? This could be the best modern-day recording of Maggot Brain, simply mind-blowing. Garry Shider always kept the groove, this epic moment in rock history was no different.
The greatest guitar player ever. ❤
When you play a song, draw a picture, or write a poem, you leave an imprint of yourself, your "soul". You express your feelings and emotion through the art form as well as your inner being. Some people transmit their souls through music so well, that the listener does not have to do anything but take it all in. If done well enough, the artist does not have to "evoke" any kind of emotion from the observer. It's not always what you play, but HOW you play it. Many kids dont understand this at first
All Eddie fans should demand another CD from Eddie unreleased stuff
I couldn't agree more!
Hazel is God comprehensive remaster, remix of Game solo LP
so emotional watching eddie play with his head back and eyes closed if you dont get chills watching this you dont love music
If listening to this doesn't send a cold chill down your back, then you really ain't feeling this....... This is spine tingling.
Mr. Hampton is still with us fortunately as is Mr. McKight, but three of the other guitarslingers for that band, Eddie Hazel, Gary Shider and Glen Gopins are gone. Goins was only 24 when the lymphoma got him. RIP, gentlemen. You helped make the world a stranger place. :-D
At some point I started wondering if the smoke came from machines or if it was just one of the fretboards that caught fire.
The story of a FUNK sounding guitar, started when Jimi Hendrix tested the electric guitar's limits in overdrive. Some may call it Rock, or Heavy Metal but I say it was FUNK because Rock N Roll was invented by Little Richard/Chuck Berry & Company and their sounds, sounded nothing like what Jimi created. As for Heavy Metal, the name itself was not even established until After Jimi's works, nor was the name created before FUNK. Therefore, the two men here Eddie and Michael are playing the sounds of Master Jimi Hendrix colors of a FUNK Guitar. The FUNK was "too Black!" so they used the term Rock and or Metal to lighten the concept, and thus ripping off its FUNK origins. THINK, IT AIN'T ILLEGAL YET!
I have loved this band my entire life, and this video reminds me of why I have. Eddie and Mike completely turned it out. I only wish the kids would stop trying to decide who is better. These guys were friends for years, They appreciated each others gifts. Oh, and FYI, Who played maggot brain at Eddie's funeral... Mike Hampton, enough said
WOW, I've probably watched every version of Maggot Brain with Eddie Hazel that I can find on YT and this is hands down the absolute best mind blowing version I've ever heard. He is so underrated. Thanks for posting. May he continue to RIP.
Wow, I can't believe this is live. I don't know if this is controversial, but I actually find this version better than the studio version. I find the drums to be better and it just feels like the guitar is more alive or something. Am I the only one?
if you like this one, listen to the one they did in michigan. its the best one in my opinion. its apocalyptic
They did these versions , all slightly different, night after night. There are lots of various performances. This is one of my all time favorites. Completely on fire! Seeing them live several times there were quite a few moments of total genius from an endless line-up of talented musicians.
@@Domn879 on the original yes thats why georgw faded them out
Drums= the Dennis Chambers!
Amazing simply amazing
what the fuck this is amazing
These notes that come straight from their torn souls resonate powerfully in my mind, making all the pain go away and leaving my soul empty.
whew...what power and depth in the music. good grief...what an inspiration for artists.
face- MELTED!!!
what better way to learn a song but from the master himself!!
Eddie ... looking like a badass angel, playing this otherworldly music ... most moving version of the most moving guitar piece I know, especially considering the fate the man was destined for. thanks
One of the greatest songs to listen to whilst sober as well!!
" I'd've "? A double contraction. I think I like that.
no wonder there are so many views and comments here
Word is Bond.....Gave me goosebumps.....thought of my Late Father and the Jewels he dropped on me in the seventies....made me cry....fo real.....Deep Song....
My brains exploded thank you Eddie hazel best guitarist ever
