“Don’t you get nervous?” Stealthy Tarp Camping in the Woods | Lake District Wild Camp
Вставка

- The questions I get asked the most (aside from “What camera do you use?” - it’s my Samsung phone) is “Don’t you get nervous hiking and wild camping alone?”
So I thought I would touch a little on this topic in today’s stealthy tarp camp. I’m not advocating solo hiking and camping, I’m just sharing where I’m coming from in my quiet little corner of the Shire and doing what I feel is within my comfort zone. Obviously safety varies wildly based on multiple factors, so it’s on each of us to risk assess our own situation.
Anyhow, I hope you enjoy coming along on this camp.

As ever with wild camping, set up late, pack up early and leave no trace. You can find the full wild camping ethos in the pinned comment below the video.
Please note, some of the native woodland and foliage shots are filmed at a separate location. This is due to two reasons - firstly, because my tripod broke while filming and so I had to strap my phone to the pole with a bit of tarp lineIt worked in a jiffy but wasn't ideal for lots of hiking about.
Secondly, I wanted to share some seasonal shots. I choose to camp at a forest that was largely non-native plantation as I felt this would be least obtrusive. With the shots of native woodland, Cam was on the lead so that he didn't trample any bluebells etc or disturb ground nesting birds. I checked beforehand to make sure he was allowed off the lead during this time of year at the primary location.
I’m not advocating solo hiking and camping, I’m just sharing my personal perspective in my quiet little corner of the Shire and doing what I feel is within my comfort zone. Obviously safety varies wildly based on multiple factors, so it’s on each of us to risk assess our own situation.
I don't share pinpoint exact locations of my wild camps as I don't feel it's my place to do so. Spending time exploring the landscape to find your personal pitch is very much part of the process for me. When we each do this, it avoids creating hotspots and deters fly campers who don't know how to navigate and have little respect for the countryside.
Personal note on this lowland camp - I enjoy being out in nature at all hours, whether that’s walking, star gazing or attempts at astrophotography. I feel that a simple tarp offers unobtrusive protection in the woods as I rest. I wouldn't do a lowland wild camp anywhere that would be visually obtrusive or on land that wasn't open to the public.

New to the Channel? ♥
Hi, I’m Chloe. I grew up in the lovely Devonshire countryside though, seeking wilder and more rugged landscape, now live in Cumbria on the edge of the Lake District with my husband Ryan and our spaniel, Cam, Join us on our adventures in the fells. We love wild camping and swimming, climbing, hiking the Wainwrights, scrambling, fell running and exploring historical sites. I hope our videos give you a moment of calm and cosiness and a little inspiration to get out on your own adventures.

Wild Camping Ethos
⛰Camp above the highest fell wall, well away from towns, villages and lake shores.
(Personal note on this lowland camp - I enjoy being out in nature at all hours, whether that’s walking, star gazing or attempts at astrophotography. I feel that a simple tarp offers unobtrusive protection in the woods as I rest. I wouldn't do a lowland wild camp anywhere that would be visually obtrusive or on land that wasn't open to the public).
🚮Leave no litter - this includes not burying any litter and removing other people's if you find it.
❌Don't light any fires, even if there is evidence that fires might have been lit.
⏳Stay for only one night.
🏕Keep groups very small - only one or two tents.
👀Camp as unobtrusively as possible with inconspicuous tents which blend in.
🌿Leave the campsite as you would want to find it.
🎒Carry out everything you carried in.
🩸Carry out tampons and sanitary towels. Burying them doesn't work as animals dig them up again.
🌾Choose a dry pitch rather than digging drainage ditches around a tent or moving boulders.
🕳Perform toilet duties at least 30 metres from water and bury the results with a trowel.
🐑At all times, help protect the environment and respect other visitors and communities.
✌Wherever you pitch, please remember that the landowners or their representatives have the legal right to order you to break camp and move on.

I've camped wild all over the country and encountered some very odd people creeping around in the dark, plus some experiences with no obvious human explanation.
*_Hello.... before I decided to watch this latest video, I looked at your profile first but there was no country of origin, and you really are a woman who likes activities in the style of solo hiking or solo camping... it turns out... nice to meet you I'm Rudy from Indonesia......._*
Thanks for sharing this with us. I'm glad Cam survived his horrible experience, and returned safely.
I'm impressed by the production values and loved the audio/visual ending.I look forward to your next.
👍👏⚘
Enjoyed the video. Just a tip from a fellow content creator - instead of having this as a comment, you should put this in your video description. It will help your video get picked up in search.
@@MINDJUNKIE I don't know how all of my description got deleted!
We love your videos, the cinematography and atmosphere is so good, really professionally made and very relaxing too, thank you 👍
Thanks so much for your kind feedback 😊
This video made me feel so comfortable. I loved the music you chose, the detailed nature shots, your beautiful companion and the calm way you spoke. I'm sorry though for you for having experienced such a scary event with those aggressive dogs. I'm glad everything worked out fine in the end.
Thanks so much for your lovely feedback Jane, appreciate it 😊
Chloe I have watched this Video & listened as you spoke of the painful events that happened a short time ago I have prayed for you Chloe & I'll continue to do so because I can hear in your voice the trepidation & anxiety those wild dogs caused you & Cam. God Bless You Chloe, I will continue to pray. ✝️🙏🏻
Thank you Ron, appreciate you 🙏
What an absolute star your dog is 😍👍. A Devon girl, excellent stuff 👍Great video once again, well done to all 🙂👏
Thank you, he sure is 😊
Norwegian here, what an interesting video. The story of your dogs ordeal struck me. My dog that I camped a lot with here in Norway died four weeks ago 14 years old
Notice the RMC beret as well?
Royal Marines arctic phase in Norway is another link.🤘
Sincere condolences
I'm so sorry to hear that 😞 It sounds like he had many wonderful adventures with you.
Such a lovely episode, storytelling as always is masterful! Absolutely brilliant 👏👏
Thank you, always nervous to hit publish haha 🙏
@@FablesandFells Don't be Chloe, your videos are amazing
Beautifully filmed, attention to detail is exquisite, love the little snippets, pushing the tent peg down and Cam's tail poking out of the tent!
Haha thanks, he was making me laugh with his tail wagging out of the tent.
There's no feeling like the great outdoors... Surrounded by beautiful scenery...and if your lucky sometimes blessed with beautiful wildlife too ...breathing fresh clean air ...and mother nature's weather .....you are a true outdoor girl ..with abundance of respect and love for the environment...a so humble too ...god bless you❤
I'm glad you and Cam overcame such a horrific experience with a beautiful, peaceful camp. Things like that can really knock us for six can't they ? It just goes to show how much resilience you build through solo hiking and wild camping though - when you need to dig deep, you know you can x
Thanks Stephie, I'm just glad he bounced back 😊
So sorry to hear about your passed nightmare, the dog is fantastic. great to see you back out enjoying nature with the dog alongside. Fantastic !!!
Thanks so much 😊
Loved this video, a really good dialogue, well filmed and produced. As a dog owner, the thought of what you went through makes me shiver. Thanks for making and sharing and the very best luck in the future. I cant wait to see more of your vids!
Thank you Phil 😊
I just discovered your channel. You have a very calming voice and beautiful outlook. The wide shots are awesome and I guess this is the video where you answered a lot of questions. Like Pooh said, "you're braver then you think!" I will definitely be watching more. A fellow camper and new friend in Florida USA 🌴
Aw thanks Richard! The Florida swaps fascinate me, would love to visit them sometime.
Being a dog lover myself with 3 golden labdradors, very moving story on the wacky Cam.Hapi all ended well😊
Aw that sounds like a handful haha, I imagine so much floof! 😄
What a lovely lady you are. Very well spoken absolutely enjoy your content. As for them dogs some people are brainless have no control over them let them run wild I go running with my dog all the time never off the lead because I know what he is capable of when he's attacked and it doesn't end well for the other dogs. That's for taking the time to make these videos much appreciated 👍👍
Thanks so much Martin 🙏
Love love love your channel. The composition and music is spectacular! Love and Light from North Carolina USA. ❤
Thanks so much Lynn 😊
Thank you for another wonderful snapshot of your life outdoors. As always beautifully filmed and narrated along with the calming musical score. Lovely to see Cam appears well and happy.
Thank you, he's always super happy to be in the woods 😊
Wonderful, an intimate and mutual interaction between nature and a persons inner life, the health of the natural environment is closely tied to the their physical and spiritual health.
Thanks Michael 🙏
So glad your dog is safe.
Thanks 🐾
Keep going you. You’re one of the best streamers for videos like these. You and Cam are the best. Very good idea the tracker I’m going to get one for my Frenchie. Try not to worry too much about the attack and glad you’ve got your confidence back. It’s a horrible experience to go through but you are an inspiration. Look forward to more videos in the future. Give Cam a cuddle from Eddie and Buster.
Aw thanks so much, that's really kind of you. Wishing you and your little Frenchie happy walks 🙏
Such a wonderful video. So sorry for everything you and Cam 🐶went through during the dog attack. Cam was so brave! Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us ❤️
Thanks as ever Ellen 😊
@@FablesandFells ❤️
Great to see you back Chloe, and Cam is over his ordeal! Great video as always, you are a tough resilent lass, keep up the good work!❤
Thank you 🙏
It’s lovely to see you out again and reclaiming your space in the wild. I’m an older bloke who can handle themselves well enough but was still knocked for six when my Cockerpoo got attacked by another dog. So I feel your pain. We’re allowed to have our confidence rocked - that’s a natural response to an unnatural event. And here you are, both our again where you’re meant to be 🙏
Thank you, it's taken a while but starting to feel more relaxed again. I'm sorry you've gone through that too. I hope your dog is doing ok now?
@@FablesandFells Ah she’s grand now, thanks for asking. A bit cautious for a while but bouncing back just like you!
What a nice surprise to go into UA-cam and find one of your video's, such a different forest to what we have on the South Coast. The production is alway's to such a high standard, well done, and very informative. It's good to see you always have your trusted friend with you, do take care. My regards to you all. Andrew.
Thanks Andrew, hope to head back down South to film at a few different locations at some point.
Lucky dog having an outdoors owner!
He sure gets me out come rain or shine 😊
So much birdsong.lovely❤
Another beautiful video thank you ❤ so glad you're starting to feel safer getting out with Cam again.
I've recently decided to come home to the Lakes for a visit for the first time in over 6 years and I'm so excited!! 💛
Thanks Maya 😊 Oh that's exciting! Are you travelling far?
I love your videos Chloe and always look forward to them, and of course, seeing you with Cam; he's such a calm dog, he's gorgeous, what a best friend you have in him 🐶
Thank you for sharing your camp; I just wish I was as brave 🥰
Thanks Lynn, he is such a sweet boy. I see your beautiful spaniel in your photo 😊
@@FablesandFells he certainly is, like my boy too. Springers are amazing dogs 💕 thank you again for the lovely video Chloe. Take care 🥰
You definitely catch the beauty of the outdoors in your videos, thanks for taking the time to share it with us😊
Thank you 😊
I always admire the organisational powers of people who make these types of videos. I bushcraft regularly with my faithful Dutch Shepherd Blade by my side. The amount of time it takes just looking after ourselves and keeping a fire going etc. I would have little time left to make videos.
Great camera work. I too love having Robins come visit
Haha it does add a while extra level off faff to proceedings 😄 Glad you also enjoy getting out on a camp with your dog.
Such a calm relaxing channel you've made thankyou so much ❤
Thank you, glad you find it relaxing 😊
It's lovely to see the bond you have with each other and your surroundings.
Thanks Winston 🙏
Really glad you got your dog back and he/she was able to outrun the attack,, I can sympathise as I have been in the same situation and yea my dog made it aswell 👍❤
I'm really sorry to hear that, I hope they're doing well?
@@FablesandFells doing very well thanks for asking she's a little lurcher and her natural speed and agility saved her ,,nice little channel you have ,, you come across really well and you have a lovely voice 👍 take care
That was excellent, great video chloe, Cam means so much to you and vice versa, how he acts around you is devotion playing out before your viewers eyes cheers, great stuff, good luck.
Thanks Peter. It did make me laugh when I was editing as I didn't fully realise how much he follows me about 😄
Lovely video (and soundtrack). Pleased you've got back your enjoyment of camping in the wild after your terrible experience. Well done.
Thank you 😊
We happened to discover your channel and really enjoy watching them. Beautiful music and photography and Cam's nonstop tail wagging is a joy!
Ah thank you 😊 Haha it is truly non-stop.
must say i never done a wild camp so hats of to you great video as ever thank you
Thanks for watching 😊
Such a cool dog.The Royal Marine beret was a nice touch and given the ordeal Cam went through, well deserved.
Thank you 🙏
Lovely video as always Chloe & Cam, I’m always impressed with your cinematography, blows my mind. ❤️
Thank you, I felt I struggled a bit with this one as there weren't any "great" landscape views to capture, but didn't help that my tripod broke either 😅
Great video thanks
Been awhile since I've been in the lakes can feel a visit back soon❤
It's looking stunning at the moment!
Thank you for another fantastic video. It makes my day when I see a new one pop up! 😊
Aw that's lovely to hear 😊
As always,it was truly lovely
Thank you 😊
Areo and coffee in the morning nothing better 😂
😂 Breakfast of champs 😅 I didn't even eat any of those snacks in the end 🙈
Thank you for sharing, great to see your not letting it get the better of you. Great video.
Thank you 🙏
Just found your channel and subscribed. Cam is gorgeous and I can only imagine your heartache on the day he was attacked. God bless you both
Thanks so much 😊
This put me more at ease ahead of my solo camp this weekend. Thank you for putting your videos out there, always such a calming and ethereal vibe
Aw that's great to hear Nadia, hope you have a lovely time. If you remember, let me know how it goes!

Thanks for watching Leon 🙏🌲
Wonderful video Chloe. Loved the cinematography & your suggestions for solo camping. Very informative!! 😊
Thanks Bill, glad you found it of interest 😊

So brave of you and what a lovely dog. Harry
Great video Chloe. I am sitting here relaxing in my apartment in New York and this is wonderful to watch. Always great video production and thanks for sharing about the struggles from last year. Wonderful to see you and Cam out and about!!
Aw it always feels extra special to hear where people are watching from, I never imagined anyone in New York being interested in my videos! I hope it's warming up 🌞
Love your work, always happy to see you out. You are looking great, thanks for showing me how beautiful UK 🇬🇧 is, myself being half British. Sorry you had that experience with your dog, being the gentle person you are I can see how it affected you. Stay safe. 🇺🇸
Thanks David, glad you enjoyed seeing it 🙏
A great video - fantastic camera work. Thanks.
Thank you, we've been talking about getting back on grit! Been a while!
Hello Chole thank you for sharing your adventure, Cam is so calm and his devotion to you is on full display. I have been going for short hikes in the hills and the canyons near me, the mountain range by me are the Santa Anna’s which was populated by indigenous people for thousands of years but the Spanish came and brought Christianity and then Mexico took over California and then eventually settlers came west and practically the indigenous people were slaughtered and many of the canyons have paranormal activity, there is one canyon that creeps me out and that’s Black Star Canyon, my senses are like a tripwire. Do you ever experience any paranormal and have that feeling that something is not right🤔anyway Chole I would love to experience an occasional midge over a rattlesnake or a mountain lion and being bit to death by ticks. Have a great day Chole👍🏻
Such brutal history we have.
Oh for sure, I feel very lucky that we don't have any of that to contend with!
I actually have a friend who is a paranormal investigator! I've had some weird experiences but I'm still a sceptic and always rationalise.
@@FablesandFells. Yes mankind’s history is brutal, hiking here can be therapeutic but also dangerous because of the wildlife, as for being a skeptic I can understand, being a former serviceman and your husband can attest to this, our senses our heightened because of training and the situation you are in. I always look forward to your post because of the video that will follow🤗
Thanks. Your best video. It really captured the experience of wild camping.
Thank you 🙏
Wonderful video, informative and chill. Perfect.
Thank you 😊

Yes it's been a bit hit and miss recently but managed to get some sun 🙏
Just stumbled on the channel. Great stuff. Living the best life with your pooch. Fabulous. Liked and subscribed. Well done.
Thanks so much 🙏
Lovely video, really relaxing. Your dog reminds me of my family dog when I was in my teens and into my 20s, he was a liver and white Springer Spaniel, Fudge, such wonderful energy and a real character. Subscribed. 😊
Aw Fudge is such a cute name. They do have such energy don't they! Cam was very well behaviour on this 😄 but they all have their mad spaniel moments. Thanks for subscribing 😊

Beautiful dog and a beautiful lady, well done, I'm just starting to get into camping, haven't even bought a tent yet but I have a lot of other bits gathered up. subbed.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it and happy camping 🏕️
Hi Chloe.
That was brilliant.
So easy to watch and listen to.
You picked a great spot there.
Bummer your tripod broke, well finding a way though to get by.
Sad days on the dog story.
Glad you both were ok and confidence getting better.
Your food really suprised me, I was expecting, nuts, berries and the healthy food in world, you rock up with a pot noddle😂👏👏👍
Great job👌
Looking forward to more👋
😂 I know, to be fair, I don't normally shop like that, I just went on a bit of a snack free-for-all 😂 I didn't actually eat any of it in the end, just the Firepot meal 🤣
@FablesandFells
It made me laugh.
It was a bit different. I watch lots of camping videos because I'm trying to get in to it. Everyone has the bag of food, I get that, it's easy to travel with. but I find it boring. You kind of know what's coming. I saw your variety and it made me laugh. I've only done one camp, it was on a beach.
My frying pan is a fray bentos tin🤦🏻😁
I don't eat much rubbish but my boys like those pies. It works pretty good too for cooking.
Hope to see more camping ones from you. It will stop me from being a baby and nervous when I go.
Thanks.😉👍
Haha hope you enjoy your next one 🏕️ I often just make sandwiches, they keep well enough!
I love your videos and I hope you will meet up with your kindred spirit ; Wild Beare . Hello - thankyou so much - you know - these wisdoms that you communicate should not be taken for granted - I go walking for my anxiety , hiking for my anxiety and fitness and feel more connected with nature and I look fwd to camping more for the whole package - man or woman its not an easy thing to do in the modern world - but so worth it as your video proves - thankyou

Love your ethos lassie. Have you read Richard Adams’ The plague dogs? I’m sure you must have. Great tale set in your neck of the woods. Have fun.
Oh I can't believe I haven't! I've read Watership Down by Richard Adams, I somehow weirdly hadn't come across that one! I'll have to read it.
So sorry to hear about your dog getting attacked. Horrible for both of you. What a wonderful idea that tracker harness is 👍.
Thanks Mike, yes I'm so glad it's available!
Fab!
Glad to see you’re a bit better. I remember you mentioning what happened, very traumatic
Thanks Andy, the first time I went out after it happened we nearly jumped a wall when a big dog ran over to us miles away from its owner 🙈 The heartbeat is gradually coming down day by day 😅
Fantastic video
Thanks Paul 👍
Very nice video thanks 🇬🇧 🇳🇿
Thanks David 👍
Lovely, just lovely. What a keen eye you have for the natural world, I think it’s what makes your films so beguiling, whether it’s a sweeping vista or a wildflower. Have you read Jay Griffith’s book “Wild”? If you haven’t, I think it would speak to you.
Thanks so much Martyn. I haven't, thank you for the recommendation, I will take a look!
Your videos are very enjoyable 😊 I’d love if you done a gear video 😊 what you bring on a day hike or what you bring on a overnight hike ❤️ or both 😅
Thanks for the feedback, I'll see what I can do 😊
Do it while you can it’s getting very busy in the Peak District. Lots of folks knocking about in my haunts where I’ve never seen folk before. In40 years I’ve never seen it so busy
Nowhere is safe now
Yes I think because it's so easy to access in the Peak. The more of a walk in, especially uphill, the less people there are!
nice tarp!!!! looks roomy and well made. and that mossy ground just may be better to sleep on. your pooch seems to like running under it..haha good to see you out and about my friend. i do the same thing by the way. i always put a foam ridge rest under anything i sleep on. or some kind of thin foam pad.
Yes loads of room in that configuration!
Nice to see you back.. Have you tried the “Tiny repel” from Flextrail? It’s really good at keeping the midges away and very light to carry…
Oh nice, I hadn't seen that! I need to get their tiny mattress pump too!
Yeah, both are really good 👍
