Thanks for sharing this! I enjoyed listening to you describe your process. I already know the result is terrific, but can never get enough of “how it’s made” videos 😊
Great safety message at the beginning. You obviously have a technical background, IMO. I am a chemical engineer working in petrochemical plants for 33+ years even a few years in BR. Many people do not appreciate the hazards associated with common chemicals that are available to the public such as the different forms of lye. Mixing two things together can generate huge amounts of heat. Lye is absolutely nothing to be trifled with. I have witnessed too many injuries because folks take shortcuts. I really appreciate your videos on how soap is made. I knew the general procedure for saponification but never actually witnessed it.
I am glad you appreciate the safety message. I try to take as much as I can home, especially when dealing with chemicals. That is one thing I don’t see enough when watching soap making videos.
@BigEShaves One feature i like about your soap is that i can start loading with a really wet brush without just creating foam. This reduces the face lathering time because you can quickly add allot of water before the lather 'breaks'.
I made soap once without the ice cubes and boy was that a mistake. It got so hot my plastic measuring cup warped to the point I thought a hole was going to pop out. Another fun video Eric!
I have worked as a Process Operator for the last forty years in the Chemical Industry and currently in the Oil & Gas industry processing natural gas, creating that lye solution is exothermic reaction giving out heat hence the ice water trick ( only ever worked a endothermic reaction chemical process on one chemical production for Kodak ) PPE is a MUST as Eric explains and clean-up, well done! 👍
I am I the same industry, except I am on the development and exploration end. As you can imagine, I have experience dealing with hazmat. I feel strongly on correct PPE and material handling. Thanks for watching Warren!
Nice vid. Loved it. 👍 In field tech work for printing inks, I was once required to use sodium hydroxide solution. I was told the same thing you said…”if you get it in your eye, you will go blind” I lack the will to make soap, but am so glad to watch it. I have seen some of the 3 roller mills we used also making hard soap…High viscosity, high sheer, fine dispersions were the goal.
Hi Eric. Great ingredients. I've been making cold process bar soap for years but never made hot process shave soap. Have you ever made very small batch like 3 - 4 ounce hot process soap? Thanks for sharing. Have a good pre Friday

Yea the ice trick is the way to go. Caustic is nothing to be careless with.
