Deliberately did a party wipe during ME2, felt terrible.

Liam: the most useless npc ever. Liam's loyalty mission: conclusive proof that he is the most useless npc ever.
Not the most, Ryder him/herself is also useless. If Liam so much as tried talking shit to Renegade Shepard like he did with Ryder, he'd have been thrown out of the airlock. Or beaten senseless. But here... Jesus, that was pathetic. So much for the "almighty pathfinder", getting moron-whipped in a conversation while being the one on the side of common sense. Fucking hell.
@@WickedParanoid Well you do know that npc stands for non-player character right? So Ryder is the player character. Anyways, the problem with Ryder is that they are a normal person with an unremarkable personality that suddenly gets an Uber-AI stuck inside him/her and suddenly is Superman/woman. Shepard was a trained soldier but he/she had a powerful personality that just wouldn't give up and is someone you can aspire to as a person. Ryder is bland and boring. Now if we do add Ryder into the mix, my vote is still for Liam because to me Ryder is more neutral. He/she doesn't break everything he/she touches at least. Liam on the other hand...he creates problems without even trying.

Anyway, as for "which one of them is worse" debate, I think both of them are equally worthless as characters. But, in a way, Liam is unique (after all, where will you find a moron as stupid as him?), while Ryder is merely a fleshbag platform for SAM. Replace him with an average Joe (or Jane, in case it's a she) and no one will notice the difference. And for me a character that is not even worth hating is the worst offender, especially when he/she is a protagonist of the game/movie/etc.
However, if we're talking about an in-universe impact created by the character, I agree with you, Liam is indeed the worst.
@@EyesOfGehenna You must have been choosing the wrong dialogue options. If you mixed it up with alot of the 'quippy/jokey/whatever that spiral line is' on the dialogue choices, hes actually pretty fun to talk to people and enemies as. Which is also because just like alot of this game, they just didnt finish fleshing everything out.
@@EyesOfGehenna I know this is late, but my main problem with Ryder is the complete lack of personality (this is most likely because of the removal of the paragon/renegade system which was finally implemented somewhat correctly in ME3 where it didn't force you to pick "upper right option cause more blue points").Like I was saying Ryder feels emotionless, lifeless and with no personality other than "this is going to be an adventure"

It's so creepy how male Ryder's eyes almost never connect with people he's talking with. They are usually focused on a few spots on the ceiling.
Cut him some slack, you would avoid eye contact with most of ME:A cast too.
@HamburgersAndBeer I don't lock eyes at all times either but most people don't look this creepy. Most of the time we will look ahead or at whatever it is we're focused or working on. Ryder's eyes look like they're trying not to roll backwards into his head.
This was a problem with the modeling after they had to remake everybody for the third time. They just never really nailed eyes down. It’s why the Archon is so shifty, they just never fixed eyes. All NPCs have really shifty eyes. Something they were lacking in the 2014 alpha, where everybody looked like people, had expressions, and their eyes didn’t dart everywhere.

I don't know if you read her prequel book, Initiation (which is actually a good book and makes Cora a much more interesting character), but the funniest part of the book is, at the end, you find out that SAM wouldn't fully integrate with anyone who isn't a member of the Ryder family. Which is why their father makes his kids the Pathfinder. So Cora's whole speech about, 'your father was right to pick you because I don't blaze a path' is actually complete bullshit.

@@patrickfrost9405 😁 well not to ruin the book to much but, the father beta tests his SAM, the one he personally augmented, with Cora and it eventually breaks down and he concludes that it is because it needs to be passed on to someone in his family. As to why genetics had an effect on what should basically be related more to psychology, I don't know, but that is the excuse they come up with in the book.

I'm big on security and OPSEC. Jesus, were this scenario reality and we were alone in an alien galaxy, I would have put a bullet in Liam. Everything he does identifies him as a total liability from punching the container like a child and almost maiming himself in the middle of enemy territory to his complete disregard for the safety of the Initiative. These writers were complete amateurs.
Honestly the s*** Liam does, if I was in, he'd be ejected out of the crew immediately. His actions really would have risked causing a diplomatic crisis that would be a s*** typhoon. We just met the only new race in a new Galaxy and his smart idea was to make them greatly distrust Us by spying on them, especially when we have bigger problems. And that's why he's just a mere security guard and not the Diplomat but Ryder should have really been careful giving him authorization like they did. I agree with you that loyalty Mission with s*** and it made me hate his character. I used to have an in-between with Carth Onashi, but he didn't wore in his character and his character quest to make me like him in the end, he made playing an evil character annoying but he was all right once you get used to him thankfully after you get off the tutorial world. And even Ashley grew on me, in truth be told her introduction was no problem to me. But Liam oh, good f****** God I hated him since the very start it seemed he was only part of my crew because he was lucky to have gotten his ass Saved By Me, I know that's similar to how Ashley joined , but come on there had to be more than that and even then Ashley had more than just her introduction on Eden Prime such as when you were getting evidence, Liam nope from start to finish I hated his character oh, I tried to give him a chance but no can get annoyed me throughout the entire game.
I couldn't fucking believe it. Its one thing to have one fuck up, but to have multiple instances of the character not learning, that's where I fucking draw the line. I think their excuse was "HES THE COMIC RELIEF LOL" but there's a difference between a comic relief who's competent versus whatever the fuck Liam is.
I knew I hated Liam as soon as I saw him go ballistic and started shooting downed enemy corpses. Dude has grounds right there for a section 8. I don't want this guy anywhere near me or my crew, he's going to put us all at risk.
That gives me a notion though, how about a companion that has nothing but good intentions for the whole game, but if you don't space him, you get the bad ending.

I think what Liam was trying to do was like that scene with Joker and Garrus in ME3 in which you find out the Turians and Humans have offensive war jokes about each other. They tell each other the jokes and they just laugh.

What I hated about most of the characters' backstory is that it's always the same crazy excuse: "I left the Milky Way galaxy because I wanted to try something new". No one in his/her right mind would do such a thing. I understand the idea that some people want to start a new life in another city or country but not another galaxy. There's no way back and the way that they always use the Whedon-speak really pissed me off. Mass Effect wasn't a joke, it used to be a believable universe.

Going to another galaxy does not have a point in lore besides fleeing from the Reapers, which most people in the game don't know about.

First time playing thru Andromeda, I romanced Pheebee. And let's just say, after her loyalty mission, I was disappointed that there wasn't an option to kick her ass off my ship whilst keeping the artifact. She pissed me off SO MUCH with that stunt, then had the GALL to question me picking the artifact over her lying, scheming ex who WAS TRYING TO KILL US?!?! Even Liara would have shot her ass in cold blood for that... or flayed her with her mind.
Same with Liam; I should have been able to drop him on a colony and leave.
The actions of those two crew members, plus needy Jaal, illustrates that even YOUR CREW don't actually believe in or respect you. Think about it; NO ONE would have pulled that shit with Shepard.

To be fair, Cora's loyalty had SOME endgame consequences depending on your choices.
I actually liked Jaal's story (just his), I just think it would have benefited from his trust taking longer to earn, but I remember genuinely feeling positive when he invites Ryder to meet his family, the people he's also now saved by helping to improve the climate on the planets he visited.

Loyalty improves unit cohesion, which reduces casualties and increases odds of victory. This is driven by evolution. Loyalty can only exist as a common trait in humans if it's pro-survival.
I wasn't banging on loyalty as a concept Theodore, I was trying to point out that a person being loyal to Shepard magically survives a gunshot when the same person with the same gunshot who's loyal dies. I think it wasn't clear as a visual, to be fair to you.
Weekend Warrior I get that. my point is more that ME2’s loyalty mechanic isn’t wildly unrealistic in terms of more loyalty equaling less casualties. granted the loyalty mechanic is ME2 doesn’t always do a great job of presenting the core concept realistically.

Liam always seems like he's trying to fix problems that don't exist.
Why would you EVER rescue the scouts over a fucking pathfinder. One pathfinder was able to save the galaxy so imagine what two could do. Its not like those scouts were the only remaining krogan in the initiative anyway so its not like your making a race extinct, which IMO would have been a way better choice. The krogan ark goes missing and they end up on the ship and you have to choose between the whole race and a pathfinder
REALLY hope you get Part 3 out sometime! These were both awesome, and arguably the best analysis I've heard as to why this game is such utter trash.
Can I just mention that they literally did leave the galaxy too "not rely on people", namely Shepard.

While I have many issues with ME2, it is more competently done.
Andromeda is incompetence squared. You can clearly tell this game had no direction, Bioware gave this project everything possible to be successful. They had, 5 years of development time, $100 million for the budget, 200 people working on the project and they had 12 writers (3 of whom were lead writers).

Consequences. (spoilers) I remember dropping to my knees in emotional torment as Tali takes a dive off a cliff in ME3. I had to go back to ME2 to fix that hole in my soul. MEA just had no emotional weight to any aspect of its story. Had a bigger emotional trigger to "you want fries with your kett ship"! Great vid as expected dude.

The "insult on purpose" thing, (What I saw of it, my laptop gone obsolete 3 years ago so no game or me) Was actually smart. They wanted to find out what's insulting for the other, so... they took a straightforward approach: No holding back, ask and say what you want and we will see if we touch a nerve.

It was good in theory, but in actual execution, it came across poorly. Was Jaal really insulted, or was Jaal playing along that he was insulted? The delivery of the lines didn't help, I think.
Also, instead of doing that, why not just talk to the new alien race about it? Or let actual diplomats handle it? It was just a weird decision from Liam.
I really think they believed he's the comic relief, but comic relief does not mean drastic incompetence.

What the actual fuck is that "cinematography"
The characters we're supposed to be focusing on has their backs turned to the fucking viewer and the camera is so close they take up so much of the screen they're just two fucking torsos bobbing around. You're essentially watching the players character model just stand their aimlessly staring...for 20 fucking seconds.
Not to mention...that fucking subject matter.
Oh wow guys, you did it, you truly tackled "prejudice" with that absolute subtle and totally not on the nose allegory with the dialogue. 10/10 master race writers, Stanley fucking Kubrick is seething with jealousy cause even he couldn't pack in a more subtle message.
