I’m 6 generations removed from my Irish ancestors. The first Connollys of my family came to the United States in the 1840s. Their oldest son died fighting for the Union in the American Civil War. Like most other European immigrants, that side of my family gradually assimilated into the giant mixing pot that the United States continues to be. Along with that assimilation comes the loss of heritage. I don’t identify as an Irish-American, because I’m not. I’m just as much German as I am Irish, hereditarily. I’ve only ever seen Ireland through an airport window. I’m born and bred here in the wonderful state of Indiana. I love my state and I love the country my family worked so hard to come to; the country nearly every generation of my family has fought for, for nearly the past 200 years. All that being said, I cannot express how much I enjoy being able to connect to those long-gone generations of my family by listening to their music and sharing in our heritage in this small way. To any other Hartmans and Connollys out there, hello from a long lost cousin.
This is actually an English song. I included a traditional performance of this in a video I just uploaded. Hope you enjoy. ua-cam.com/video/293fUgqyHAw/v-deo.html
Oh how lovely. As a great fan of the Irish rebel song 'Foggy Dew' I am so pleased that this beautiful sad love song of the same name is being kept alive by a new generation.
Heard this randomly in a video. Teared up. Very unlike me. Such a beautiful voice and such restrain and control. Simply wonderful peace. Soothes the soul more than any song I know.
It was hearing this song, sung unaccompanied by Harry Cox, that opened my ears and my heart to traditional music when I was a teenager (55 years ago). I have never anyone song the song since until now. This is a beautiful rendition.

Sorry no disrespect intended but isnt that lyric from the irish rebel version knowin as the foggy dew?..this is an old english love ballad but the lyrics you posted are still class
At the first i heard this, it immediately warmed my hearth and teared my eyes. Then after many times I've played this music and go deep into the lyric, it blows me away that the i found this song about a gay person who feel sorry for a sad girl who came into him, and he can't open his hearth because he is looked to men. Then it changes my perspective while hearing this song (because i am straight of course). But what can i do, i love hearing this song ❤, hate my mind😮💨
Really? That is your interpretation? Very strange. I think it's just about him "using" a girl for her stability, "a bachelor young and bold, followed a roving trade" from town to town, ruining girls and marrying none.
@@artseosamhogriobhta that part, 'i courted a handsome maid'. Didn't it makes you feels odd? What is that even mean? They (with the girl) didn't do anything for one night in the hotel. Also they are duo (men and men) strengthen my guess. So what do you think? Am i wrong thinking like that?
@@jamessiagian8124 Ah yes, I understand the confusion. "Handsome" is not gendered in this sentence. You could call a woman handsome, meaning attractive (beautiful), or you could call a man handsome, meaning attractive (handsome). And while he doesn't talk about doing anything explicitly, it is heavily implied by the narrative. For instance, after he has stayed with her some months, he leaves to follow his roving trade, to another town and another woman. Which is why at the end she is weeping and crying that she is "undone". He tries to console her but he explains that he is moving on, no longer requiring her station in life and the bed that she owns "for the Foggy Dew has gone". There are other interpretations that imply "the Foggy Dew" symbolizes virginity and/ or youth.
@@artseosamhogriobhta so the handsome maid is the girl? If its true, i've misunderstood the line. It changes the whole opinion. FYI i didn't say i dont like the music, i just confuse the lyric

Foggy Dew
When I was a bachelor young and bold

The only thing that I ever done wrong
Well I courted a handsome maid

Well all the first part of that night
How we did sport and play
And all the latter part of that night
Snug in my arms she lay
And when the broad daylight appeared
She cried "I am undone!"
Well hold your tongue, my pretty young girl
For the foggy dew has gone
[Verse 4]
Well I never told nobody her name
And its damn me if I do
But it's often times that I think on that night
That I kept off the foggy dew

Is there a reason why Brian MacGloinn and Radie Peat ain’t sharerd a song together because this needs to happen?
Ha! Imagine! I'd say it's a case of waiting for the song to pick them, as opposed to the other way round. That'll be an important moment.
Waiting on that one with you, my friend. Not sure I’m prepared for the brilliance of it.
The melody to this song is pretty similar to 'The Willow Garden', which I still think is Radie's definitive performance!
