This is the version of 'Hares on the Mountain' that Radie and Daragh put together for episode 3 of This Ain't No Disco (go check out the whole episode).
It's largely inspired by the version that Shirley Collins and Davy Graham played on their seminal album 'Folk Roots, New Routes', though this one's a bit slower, due in part to the fact that the guitar used here is a baritone guitar that was made by Frank Tate for Lisa O'Neill, and due also in part to the fact that we like making tunes sound like they're on Diazepam...
lisa o'neil and lankum is like the dream gig
Yep, & they're all playing at endoftheroad fest this year. I always go but I'm so happy to be seeing them there on the best festival stage. The Garden stage.
Who on sweet Earth are the 81 dip sticks that don't like this?....
This voice and guitar are timeless, heart stirring and moving.
Lol
Haven t heard that in years
"Dip stick"
Classic
My family was forced to flee Ireland - County Clare - never to return- We all speak Gaelic and now I am in my 70’s and my Mom and Da are gone! In my dreams is the only way I can visit - Boyle -O Shanahan -Murphy 💧🇮🇪💧💚🤍🧡💚🤍🧡
This song is from England but go off

A stranger brought me here and now I don't want to leave. Hauntingly beautiful. She has a special voice.

That's about where I am at this point. It's still good.

Well, I have to say that my entire morning has now been taken up listening to them, drinking them in like a strong, sweet porter. Wonderful. I am trying to persuade the mammy to come and see them in Brighton on December (23). I will be learning several of these no doubt and singing them for ever more. It's great when you find something that speaks to your soul.
Did you learn a few
@janewrin1830, and can we hear you somewhere?
I’ve listened to this maybe a few hundred times. It’s absolutely hauntingly beautiful. So simple but so lasting. It’s honestly just perfect. I love classic Irish folk but this is something different and raw and it’s amazing.
The Irish version of 'Hit the Road, Jack'.
It's an English folk song; perhaps that's what gives it a slightly different vibe if you're more familiar with Irish music.
Agree I come here often
same, wouldn't mind this up on Spotify

Except it's not actually Irish.
There's not many I'd put up there with Luke Kelly.. but this lady has got the soul of Dublin in her and so did that man!
OMG I'm totally in love with their icy steel and fire, best band in the last 20 years, a sonic vision that brings tears to my eyes and a chill up the spine, & God i love the natural sounds of the seagulls and howling wind, thank you universe for allowing us to hear this wonderful soulful tapestry, Kudos
they're even better live, highly recommend you go see them if you ever get the chance
Getting the Paul Mescal bump this morning!
Radie’s Voice is from the Otherworld ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
It’s better than a radish...
An Irish songstress is exactly the earthy component this song calls for, love hearing the seagulls
The sound with that guitar against the sea and traffic and her singing.. How perfect can it get xx
Never heard her voice before, I'm blown away .........glad I found this,.....
I don't know how I ended up watching this but I'm glad. Probably the best that's happened to me today.
Timeless. I can see her 100 years ago singing at a fair, eyes closed
A few thousand plays in. At least once daily and it's not a bore
I reckon I've listened to this song about 20 times in the last two days. Raidie's voice is this beautiful, haunting ethereal hum. Coupled with her accent, it's pure perfection. This is now a song I'll listen to until I die.
Hi there from Birmingham England I lived in Ireland for 10 year's and loved it the people and the craic, I'm Irish/Italian on my dad's side from co/wexford lol Paul p England x 🙂🌹👍
HELLO FROM ROYAL COUNTY MEATH IRELAND
Just to know that this song and these people exist fills me with joy.
This is utterly sublime - yearning, wistful, deeply honest and true. Radie's voice makes me weak at the knees.
This song Takes me back to the times that I never knew and to the ones who I once loved so true
then leaves me alone their desperately trying to find my way threw
back home to them before its over again
when the song ends
a flying vision of a life that was shamelessly taken and the names I was given
Forsaken
When I was Stolden
all those years ago
the song suddenly ends and then once again
my old first short life is all but
forgiven and Forgotten by me till the next time I play this song
I secretly call adoption
P$
(It's always that somber baritone guitar
That finally breaks my heart)
I've listended to this more times than I can count, just beautiful, top class musicians!
Currently living many miles from home and this song has become an obsession. So haunting and melancholic, every time I listen it nearly brings me to tears but it's also oddly soothing and comforting. Amazing stuff!
Me too
Her voice(& soul) is about 5000 years old…..🙏☘️
I love this woman and her voice.
A grower of a song. Now I can't stop listening to it! See ye in London in October, it's been too long!
What,a voice what a Soul,
Slainte,mi Love
Literally bounce back and forth from this and collins/Graham's version .. such a lovely tune
Shirley Collins and Davy Graham's version is an arrangement of a version collected by Cecil Sharp in Somerset, England in 1906.
I included many versions (including authentic traditional ones) in my latest "Phonograph to Folk Revival" video: ua-cam.com/video/rzH9HaST5JA/v-deo.html
The series compares similar recordings of the same traditional songs by traditional singers and popular musicians.
Feel free to subscribe to my channel if you're interested in traditional folk music!
I’m completely obsessed with this cover
how doesnt this have 20 million views and a million likes
Such a beautiful voice. And this version is such a heartwrenching interpretation. After all, when you look at he lyrics on the paper they are quite lighthearted. But now it's like this longing for youth or something like that.
Very well said :) i feel the same sort of!
I totally agree
One comment said her voice sounds like she is 200 years old.
They turned an syrupy sweet old pop song into great art
The mark of an modern alchemist
And grand musicians
Of the highest order
Thanks so much
i cannot for the life of me get this the fuck out of my head. beautiful work!
Just come across this, be watching more!! And watched it a 100 times since, deadly
I think I’ve got a crush on her voice.
Great rendition of an English folk classic big fan of this
Ah, Sandymount, and the South Wall. Used to love walking there when I lived in Dublin, watching the waders at low tide and trying not to get trapped when the tide came in...
From all over the world, we're listening, rapt, again and again. The comment section is a who's who of people I'd like to know. Lankum destroys and rebuilds me completely mind/body/soul with every listen. Thank you. Come to Wisconsin: I can promise 20 people and can drag another 30 by their hair if need be. If I had half the money my broke, functional Alcoholic, farmer butt had left in my bartenders care, I'd come see across the ocean.
Late, but I've arrived : what a beauty ❤
Just love these guys
That’s got to be one of the prettiest things I’ve heard

Wow, got to know Lankum two hours ago, and now I come across a song I've heard before (sung and played by Fern Maddie). All this is due to the blessing Bandcamp truly is.

The sweetest sound. Love everyone in this video so much.
Beautiful! And really great work on the videography, so real and alive
