    John Murtough has just stepped down from his role as Director of Football at Manchester United. Murtough has been at the club for 10 years, and he’s a product of the Glazer ownership of Manchester United. There’s been an expectation for a long while that Murtough was going to step down or be moved on, especially with rumours of some stalwart backroom staff being rumoured to be joining United in his place. The INEOS restructuring of Manchester United is really about to kick into gear...

      @Sprt1337 I don't think anyone would've convinced him to give up his wages tbf, would you just give up 17m that you were promised and earned. Ultimately we should've pushed back sooner and just said not happening and left it. Just pushing back on the original comment you can't really hold that one against him as he did his part

  • @Alp-xe6ty

    Think it's possible to say he needed to leave whilst not saying the guy was a complete chump. I don't know all the finer workings but if you look at the work the academy has produced over the last 5-10 years then it's pretty good really. We've gone out and brought in a ton of talent, including the likes of Garnacho, Mainoo, Ibragimov, Lacey etc. Our under 18s are tearing it up and these things tend to have some delay before really bearing fruit, so I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and give him some credit for helping put in what is now a really promising academy.
    Yeah we've typically had good academy products but realistically, from 05-15 we only produced the odd player. Right now we're looking at a handful that could feasibly be part of the first team within the next few years and that's not something to totally sniff at.
    I feel like we're so quick to just immediately slate people and everything to do with United. We get a bit lost in the negativity and emotional tantrums at time. Not everything and everyone has been a complete and utter disaster and must be hated with venom, which is sadly how our fanbase tends to look at it by and large.

      @@steve13191a better run club would've either paid significantly less for Antony or walked away from the deal and found ETH an under-the-radar inverted right winger. They should've bought him at the beginning of the window for about 60m or told ETH that it's not happening and found him someone else. Other big clubs find hidden gems, but not MU. That's not ETH's fault, surely.They should've paid less for pretty much all transfers and been able to bring in more players due to having money left over.

    • @owenmcateer721
      @owenmcateer721 Місяць тому

      @@steve13191logically, he's correct. ETH selected his own players and it didn't always work out well. If the club had brought him some really good options to choose from he would probably have a better squad and have paid less for it. Or at least they should've paid reasonable fees for the players he wanted and had money left over to buy one or two more players.
      Also, there's the issue of him not having a top striker the whole time he's been at the club. Can you imagine City doing that to Pep?
      They also haven't been able to sell players for any significant fees, thus impinging upon their ability to buy players.
      It's a pretty strange argument to make that a better run transfer team wouldn't have given him a better squad

    • @rana1561
      @rana1561 Місяць тому

      Promotion from within is also something present in football, but for that you need the club to work like an organisation, did they profile the people to promote the right way? Did they give junior executives assignments that upgrade their skill to be able to handle the change in roles or bigger decision making? Does the club have a rotation policy for young executives to work in different departments for a period of time under the head to learn the ropes while also executing assignments that gains them experience, are executives provided with opportunities for leadership programs and workshops on different Aspects? Do they learn about on the field player fitness schedule handling, do they learn how to read market pricing and negotiation levers, have they worked on understanding how data is being implemented in scouting and player profiling? For example, a young executive like Fletcher can learn so many aspects of data for player profiling because he has been a top level player and has inherent experience to observe players, or but we seldom recruit even staff the right way under Woodward. So yeah, internal promotions are happening in football, but you need to create pathways to develop executives to be able to level up internally.

      @@ciaran4579 you still don't get it, do you? There are some senior roles, like Director of Football, at clubs like United where you don't have the luxury of developing the candidate. The person you hire has to already be best-in-class or on the verge of it. Plus the last people you should expect to develop their workers for promotions on the footballing side are the Glazers. But how long would modern fans and owners put up with the levels of success that we had to endure under Fergie for those first five years?
      You and I both remember the truth of the Fergie years, and that first half-decade was just as painful as some of the stuff we've seen under the Glazer ownership.
      And Atkinson had been a popular manager, who had won the FA Cup and finished top 4 every season. Fans genuinely believed we were in with a shout of the title with that team!
      Not many people outside Martin Edwards and Bobby Charlton were chanting Fergie's name by the end of those first 3 years.
      Though oddly enough everyone you ask from back then tells you, "I was the only one who believed in him!"
      Patience, and trust (from two people) were what allowed Fergie to continue his plans and succeed, and for us to become the dominant team in England and create a genuine dynasty, unmatched in this country.

    Right decision to be honest. The senior management structure needs a complete refresh. I can't say Murtough was to blame for the last 10 years, his hands were probably tied by the Glazers. It's very damming of the Glazers that they've had to hand footballing operations over of a football club they bought to a new investor as they couldn't make it work. Radcliffe is bringing in the best people who will answer not to the Glazers, but to himself, someone loves football and loves United. That can only be a positive thing.

    He & Arnold basically going on an all expenses paid holiday to Barcelona for 2 weeks to “convince De Jong” despite being repeatedly told no.
    Offering Ajax 85m for Antony after VDS recognising he was dealing with idiots said go as high as possible.
    Telling Chelsea he wouldn’t go higher then 40 for Mount so offered them 60.
    And according to Ornstein practically pushed Fergie out the way to give Bellingham the tour himself which apparently left Fergie fuming.

    People saying Ashworth is best in class ? You're having a laugh 😂😂😂

      100% 👍 I don’t see how ashworth can be added value. Next year I don’t want to be at the league table where Newcastle is today. And I certainly don’t want southgate, potter or tuggel anywhere near our 1st team.

      I have a feeling the "head of FA elite development" isn't the key decision maker when it comes to hiring or firing managers for England the same way Nick Cox isn't hiring/firing managers at Utd...
      Depending on when the quote was taken, Southgate and Allardyce would have either been colleagues or ex-colleagues of his...
      He definitely will have continued to have a professional relationship with Southgate while he was at Brighton/Newcastle because of players at those clubs involves in the England Setup at various levels.
      With that in mind, it wouldn't be the smartest idea for him to publicly call them shit managers or dog them out would it?
      Tonali was a miss for sure...but there aren't many.

      @TNT_12 Місяць тому

      You think you're a legal expert, don't you? What more due diligence could Ashworth have done on Tonali? Start his own police investigation? The Italian newspaper reports on Tonali and the other players surfaced a month and a bit after Tonali was signed. Obviously Milan knew the truth and what could eventually happen, but they were never gonna publicize it themselves, especially not before they were able to wash their hands clean of Tonali and sell him for as much $$ as possible. It was eyebrow-raising that Milan were even willing to sell one of their highly-talented Italian kids internationally in the first place when Italian clubs hardly ever do so, but how could Ashworth have predicted the exact reasoning for it?
      And what on earth could Ashworth have done about Big Sam? Read his mind and discover that Sam is a corrupt individual? The video didn't surface until Big Sam got the job, so how could Ashworth had known about it? Big Sam was a fairly clean guy prior to getting the England job.
      S*** happens in football that people sometimes don't have the resources/power to predict and prepare for.

      @@TNT_12 in his position it was his job to do the proper due diligence and ask the right questions to the right people. As precaution he should have put some proper exit clause in the contract with the player and selling club to get the money back if something like that pops up. It’s simply foolish and very damaging for all stakeholders. why would I like someone like him at united to be responsible for recruitment.

    The hiring of Ten Hag was supposed to herald a title push in 2-3 years back in 2022 after finishing 6h. Fast forward to 2024 and progress would be finishing 5th next season.🤔 Safe to say he hasn't worked out.

      Would you even put any sort of decent money on us finishing top 4? I wouldn't.

    The existence of the women's team does not benefit the first team like the youth and reserve teams do, so I don't care if it's neglected.
    It is an insignificant sideshow as far as I'm concerned. Just like the basketball team of the 80s was.

      When Ten Hag in his first season finished third, won a Cup and qualified for the Champions League while making United play some relatively good Football especially when the injuries were not much, did you criticize him then? Just asking with no form of disrespect.
      He's made mistakes no doubt BUT the players he wanted replaced were not sold off because the club couldn't sell them due to their high wages... I'm referring to players like Maguire, Martial, Tominay. Injuries have crippled progress of the team this season. Even Pep Guardiola will struggle with that current United squad considering the injuries and the club being unable to replace a couple of bang average players.
      For Ten Hag to achieve that much in his first season despite not getting all his wishes in terms of the type of players he wanted shows if he's backed up by the right people behind the scenes, he can deliver. Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp didn't get going in their first season. These top Managers wouldn't have been successful over the years at their Clubs if they didn't have the right structure behind the scenes supporting them. This is my personal opinion though. No disrespect once again.
