Surely one of the best films of all time. A timeless, sweeping epic masterpiece. Beautiful cinematography and locations, acting was so good and genuine. A film that made you live every emotion. Last 10 mins were excruciating and exiliating best ending.

This is one of the last great American movies. Just great cinema. And then he made Heat. Michael Mann has missed not quite as much as he hits but when he hits it’s as good as you can get. Thief is another total classic and Manhunter is very good. Far superior to Red Dragon, which was just an excuse to try and get Anthony Hopkins in another Lecter movie. I even love The Keep. Would love to get a Bluray of that, but not sure it’s available.
I loved the movie, then read the book. I realized that Munro's younger daughter was supposed to be black. I considered it to be a sadly missed opportunity to make a social comment.

Well you’re lucky then because I have yet to get any of my family members to watch this with me! 15 years of marriage and a few kids later, no one would. I finally gave up but now that my middle child is 15, I believe she will. I’m going to ask again. Lol I was not quite 10 yet when I watched this in theaters with my dad the first time. In my eyes this is the best moovie ever...ive seen it over 50 times and ive heard the theme thousands and thousand of times.Ive searched everything around the last of the mohican moovie and the songs and till today i hear it everyday in the tens of different versions that exist out there. This moovie made me search deeper and deeper about the history of the native americans and learn w/e is possible to learn about them from the internet. This moovie not only made me do all of the above but somehow changed me as a person...and till today it still does that. For me this moovie is an inspiration and a major drama in the same time...this moovie is so powerdfull that it can change your life in both good and bad way... This moovie is a masterpiece.Period.
I love this movie. I was a first-year US History teacher and working part-time as a bookseller at Barnes and Noble Bookstore when the film came out. I saw a trade magazine with a picture of Day-Lewis on its cover. I knew I just had to use the movie in class as a teaching tool. The star had his sleeves rolled up, tattoos on full exhibition, Natty Bumppo (Hawkeye) was gripping Killdeer tightly while running full tilt toward the camera. Excellent studio still. A year later I used the film as an adjunct to a friend who was involved and had been involved for some time in Rev Recreative groups. My friend came to class and interrupted the movie/class in order to try recruiting the entire class for George III's army while wearing a rev war period uniform and carrying an original museum-quality Brown Bess that he owned. I had that class in my pocket for the rest of the year. I used that film for the next twenty years with the same effect. I used the film to clarify the differences between cinematic history and actual history. I tried my best to emulate what my history instructor had done for us when I'd been in high school thirty years before.
This movie was so good because the characters were so believable. No special effects with werewolves or spaceships, just a really good story albeit not based on facts. The cast had great chemistry together.
The name of the guy who taught Lewis to reload while running is Mark Baker. He is a historical re-enactor. That guy who lives the life and taught lewis the other skills is a friend of Bakers. Baker has a cameo in the movie, when they are at the fort, Baker waves at Hawkeye and Unkas and calls out to them from up on the wall.
I love watching interviews with Daniel Day Lewis becuase of how much he is different from the characters he portrays. SOme actors, even some of the greatest, lend part of their personalities to the characters they play. And with DDL it seems like every time he has absolutely nothing in common with his characters and yet he portrays them so brilliantly!
Mr. Mann, you made one of the best movies ever to grace the screen. Whoever did the casting was perfect and helped you greatly. I can't see this movie enough times.

Try Hostiles starring Christian Bale, Rosamund Pike, and Wes Studi. Maybe you'll enjoy it. I don't know if it compares to Last of the Mohicans but it definitely wasn't a typical Hollywood moneygrab.
I love Daniel Day-Lewis, he is handsome, talented and interesting, he is a very good and an accomplished actor who always put a 100% in all his role and his role as Hawkeye in The Last of the Mohicans was no different, he is so physical in it fighting, shooting and loving the beautiful, talented and interesting Madeleine Stowe who is great as Cora Munro, I love the movie, I love them both, they are the best.

I saw the last of the Mohicans in theaters in 1982. What an experience. While it won for best sound, Deservedly so, I am still beside myself in grief that It wasn’t even nominated for best cinematography and best score…
During filming DDL was given the option to use a lighter non firing musket in scenes not involving shooting. The actual firing musket weighed around 16 pounds. The other less than half the weight. DDL chose to use the firing musket for more authenticity.
My original colonial period (firing) pa flintlock long rifle weighs in at just over 8 lbs - i don’t understand why a firing movie replica would weigh around 16 pounds?...

This is one of my all time favorite movies. It feels so authentic, and puts you right there in the middle of that conflict to help you understand what it was like to live in those times. The struggle to survive with a vision on building a future. Along with that struggle comes destruction of the old to give way to the new. The loss of life is tragic, but undoubtedly reflects the accuracy of those times.
I've watched Last of The Mohicans, Tombstone and The Holy Grail over 100 times each. This is by far my favorite. The French & Indian War is often overlooked as being a vital element of North American history. Thumbs-Up to Michael Mann and the entire cast & crew---!!!
I don't know if I would say that. (True, I do love the movie) The book is written in early 19th century writing style that takes a bit of getting use to by the modern reader. It took me a couple of tries to get into the novel, but once I got the rhythm I really thought it was great. And placing the book in the context of entire Leatherstocking series, James Fennimore Cooper deserves to be considered the first great American novelist. The character of Uncus plays a much bigger role in the novel. Curiously, there are characters that die in the movie that live in the book (Alice and Heyword) and characters that survive in the movie that die in the book (Cora). Also there is no rivalry between Hawkeye and Heyword. Another thing the movie sidesteps the fact that Cora is biracial
Excellent point and I agree. Based on the hundreds of books which I have read and a large number of them made into movies, only a small number of books let me down. Much like yourself, I preferred the movies - 'That Last of the Mohicans' to the book and same with "Doctor Zhivago'.
i am a movie aficionado and watch sometimes 2 or 3 a day in my retirement - this is on my personal top 20 or so list - for me it is nearly perfect - romance, action, costumes, history, makeup, dialogue, cast, and of course one of the best scores of all time.
Love the movie, love the music. Daniel Lewis has grown to be a truly great actor, Madeliene Stowe is very easy on the eyes. Wes Studi and Russel Means were brilliant.

Beautiful movie - historically accurate, great acting and physicality and the scenic beauty of it makes you believe they are really back in that unspoiled landscape of those days.
Cooper wanted to write a novel that gave the general flavor of an era that had ended shortly before he was born. He noted in the intro that he was not writing a history book - but he did make some of the mistakes believed in his time. MM went even further in bringing the time and characters to life in a believable way. Some of the 'history' is a little wrong - Col Monro did not die - until months later of a heart attack in Albany - but he was a broken man. However, much of the portrait of the people of the era is correct - as is the general outline of the events of 1757 in the NY wilderness.
Great movie, one of my favorites, great musical score, great acting, lush scenery and Madeline Stowe at her peak. Daniel Day Lewis is fantastic as well.
My father took me to watch this movie at the theater when I was 14. An intense experience that left indelible memories. Watching this film for the second time 30years later just makes me appreciate even more how great it is and how well it has stood the test of time. You can totally feel all the hard work, commitment and passion that went in its making.
The fact that this didn't sweep the Academy Awards that year proves what a BS game those awards are. Daniel Day-Lewis is fantastic in everything and this was arguably his finest performance. And Russell Means was truly superb.
I live where a big part of this movie was filmed, I was in high school at the time and working at a flea market selling ice cream and got to meet a lot of the Native Americans who were extras working on the film. Most of the areas are still the same as seen in the movie.
One of the most riveting and beautifully captured movie, every part of this movie is amazing and Lewis delivers in all fronts. And of course the musical score is equally amazing, adds so much to the movie and heightens the emotions like only good music can.
I live within a half hour of Fort William Henry, there's a museum on the spot where the battle took place and also another 40 minutes from Fort Ticonderoga (Carillon to the French where Montcalm launched his siege from). I am also directly descended from a man who fought as part of the Colonial militia raised to defend the fort from the French. I am also directly descended from Akwesasne Mohawk on my mother's side and on my father's side, my grand mother was half French-Canadian and Mohawk so my whole family is not only from this area but my ancestors on all sides fought and took part in the battles and wars from New France, to the French & Indian War, the Revolutionary War and War of 1812.
I've known Russell Means since our American Indian Movement days. Say what you will but he stood his ground for his people more than anyone since Crazy Horse. He was my friend.
If I'm honest, this is probably my favorite movie. Certainly the one I've watched more than any other. I have the DVD (obviously), and had always wished there was a "making of" documentary. How I've just discovered this after all these years is beyond me. Red Ready, whomever you are, you've made my day by posting this. Thank you. I'd like to one of my favorite parts is the Cameron's cabin in the beginning of the movie. And of course the scene in the hospital, with Madeleine / Cora. There is not much to match the beauty of that face.
Was lucky to be able to be around and party with the extras while they were in asheville nc. best time of my life! took a few of them to see "Unto These Hills" in cherokee and some up on "Mt. Mitchell".

This was my first movie to see in the theater. I had went with my parents as a young teenager. I loved this movie the first time and have seen a bunch of times! Now all I have to do is hear the music playing in the background and I immediately know what’s on tv! Thank you so much for this beautiful masterpiece. The actors did a well job done. Loved the romances. Both with Cora and Hawkeye & Uncas & Alice. Just wish we saw more with Uncas & Alice. But this will always be a top favorite!!!!💜

I love watching interviews with Daniel Day Lewis becuase of how much he is different from the characters he portrays. SOme actors, even some of the greatest, lend part of their personalities to the characters they play. And with DDL it seems like every time he has absolutely nothing in common with his characters and yet he portrays them so brilliantly!
Would have enjoyed hearing from Wes Studi and Eric Schweig. Love them. Thanks for upload.

An amazing film that so perfectly captures an important time in US history. Mann and Lewis really did an amazing job, but Madeline Stowe’s performance was also breathtaking.

ha as i shared this video and typed what i type I had a similar thought...and i dont hate those Marvel movies altho im bored of them to the point of not getting excited to see them...and surely they dont have this level of passion to honest filmmaking... they work hard in different ways

Try Hostiles starring Christian Bale, Rosamund Pike, and Wes Studi. Maybe you'll enjoy it. I don't know if it compares to Last of the Mohicans but it definitely wasn't a typical Hollywood moneygrab.

I love Daniel Day-Lewis, he is handsome, talented and interesting, he is a very good and an accomplished actor who always put a 100% in all his role and his role as Hawkeye in The Last of the Mohicans was no different, he is so physical in it fighting, shooting and loving the beautiful, talented and interesting Madeleine Stowe who is great as Cora Munro, I love the movie, I love them both, they are the best.

I saw the last of the Mohicans in theaters in 1982. What an experience. While it won for best sound, Deservedly so, I am still beside myself in grief that It wasn’t even nominated for best cinematography and best score…

During filming DDL was given the option to use a lighter non firing musket in scenes not involving shooting.
The actual firing musket weighed around 16 pounds.
The other less than half the weight.
DDL chose to use the firing musket for more authenticity.
My original colonial period (firing) pa flintlock long rifle weighs in at just over 8 lbs - i don’t understand why a firing movie replica would weigh around 16 pounds?...

Very simply...a great movie...taken to the level of art...about life in North America in those wild, random days...
This is one of my all time favorite movies. It feels so authentic, and puts you right there in the middle of that conflict to help you understand what it was like to live in those times. The struggle to survive with a vision on building a future. Along with that struggle comes destruction of the old to give way to the new. The loss of life is tragic, but undoubtedly reflects the accuracy of those times.
I remember watching his movie on VHS. The production, story, scenery, acting was brilliant. A true classic.
I've watched Last of The Mohicans, Tombstone and The Holy Grail over 100 times each. This is by far my favorite. The French & Indian War is often overlooked as being a vital element of North American history. Thumbs-Up to Michael Mann and the entire cast & crew---!!!
One of the extremely rare instances where a movie based on a novel is way better than the novel.
its not hard. the book is hugely archaically written. the movie is more faithful to the times.
I don't know if I would say that. (True, I do love the movie) The book is written in early 19th century writing style that takes a bit of getting use to by the modern reader. It took me a couple of tries to get into the novel, but once I got the rhythm I really thought it was great. And placing the book in the context of entire Leatherstocking series, James Fennimore Cooper deserves to be considered the first great American novelist. The character of Uncus plays a much bigger role in the novel. Curiously, there are characters that die in the movie that live in the book (Alice and Heyword) and characters that survive in the movie that die in the book (Cora). Also there is no rivalry between Hawkeye and Heyword. Another thing the movie sidesteps the fact that Cora is biracial

Excellent point and I agree. Based on the hundreds of books which I have read and a large number of them made into movies, only a small number of books let me down. Much like yourself, I preferred the movies - 'That Last of the Mohicans' to the book and same with "Doctor Zhivago'.

i am a movie aficionado and watch sometimes 2 or 3 a day in my retirement - this is on my personal top 20 or so list - for me it is nearly perfect - romance, action, costumes, history, makeup, dialogue, cast, and of course one of the best scores of all time.
Believe me, there are still many parts of America that are beautiful but my God I can only imagine how gorgeous the land was 400 years ago 🇺🇸 🇺🇸

Beautiful movie - historically accurate, great acting and physicality and the scenic beauty of it makes you believe they are really back in that unspoiled landscape of those days.
Cooper wanted to write a novel that gave the general flavor of an era that had ended shortly before he was born. He noted in the intro that he was not writing a history book - but he did make some of the mistakes believed in his time. MM went even further in bringing the time and characters to life in a believable way. Some of the 'history' is a little wrong - Col Monro did not die - until months later of a heart attack in Albany - but he was a broken man. However, much of the portrait of the people of the era is correct - as is the general outline of the events of 1757 in the NY wilderness.
Altogether the music, scenery, language and casting, it’s a stunning movie.

My father took me to watch this movie at the theater when I was 14. An intense experience that left indelible memories.
Watching this film for the second time 30years later just makes me appreciate even more how great it is and how well it has stood the test of time. You can totally feel all the hard work, commitment and passion that went in its making.
That's what amazed me.... Running with the rifle+ re loading.... In the rain!! Well done movie.... One of my favorites!!
The fact that this didn't sweep the Academy Awards that year proves what a BS game those awards are. Daniel Day-Lewis is fantastic in everything and this was arguably his finest performance. And Russell Means was truly superb.

I live where a big part of this movie was filmed, I was in high school at the time and working at a flea market selling ice cream and got to meet a lot of the Native Americans who were extras working on the film. Most of the areas are still the same as seen in the movie.

One of the most riveting and beautifully captured movie, every part of this movie is amazing and Lewis delivers in all fronts. And of course the musical score is equally amazing, adds so much to the movie and heightens the emotions like only good music can.
I live within a half hour of Fort William Henry, there's a museum on the spot where the battle took place and also another 40 minutes from Fort Ticonderoga (Carillon to the French where Montcalm launched his siege from). I am also directly descended from a man who fought as part of the Colonial militia raised to defend the fort from the French. I am also directly descended from Akwesasne Mohawk on my mother's side and on my father's side, my grand mother was half French-Canadian and Mohawk so my whole family is not only from this area but my ancestors on all sides fought and took part in the battles and wars from New France, to the French & Indian War, the Revolutionary War and War of 1812.

Daniel Day-Lewis is such a versatile actor.
I've known Russell Means since our American Indian Movement days. Say what you will but he stood his ground for his people more than anyone since Crazy Horse. He was my friend.

If I'm honest, this is probably my favorite movie. Certainly the one I've watched more than any other. I have the DVD (obviously), and had always wished there was a "making of" documentary. How I've just discovered this after all these years is beyond me.

I'd like to one of my favorite parts is the Cameron's cabin in the beginning of the movie. And of course the scene in the hospital, with Madeleine / Cora. There is not much to match the beauty of that face.

James Fenimore Cooper wrote the Leatherstocking tales in the house where my good friend grew up in Sag Harbor.
This was my first movie to see in the theater. I had went with my parents as a young teenager. I loved this movie the first time and have seen a bunch of times! Now all I have to do is hear the music playing in the background and I immediately know what’s on tv! Thank you so much for this beautiful masterpiece. The actors did a well job done. Loved the romances. Both with Cora and Hawkeye & Uncas & Alice. Just wish we saw more with Uncas & Alice. But this will always be a top favorite!!!!💜
This movie pulls me in. The story, acting, epic scenery and absolutely amazing soundtrack, it makes me feel… everything.
