Wes Studi was amazing, just amazing here as Magua. If anything I remember him and his acting over all the others, his is one of the best acting of all time. He should have 100% won an Oscar for this role. I loved his explanation of Magua too, how he didn't act him as a 'villian' it's all perspective and that's life.
Saw it again last night and he steals it every time.. just the passive curious look on his face after the girl jumps and whn h takes out munrows heart. People have got Oscar's for much less...
My girlfriend asked me what is the most romantic movie I've ever seen. Without hesitation, I said the Last of the Mohicans. She looked confused so I told her about the waterfall scene. Now she understands why.
I agree with you..... also the night scene in the fort when they looked at each other and he led her off. Full of love and sexuality. You don’t need a nude or sex scene to express that. Movie people don’t understand that these days.
When I was at University this film had just came out, a film club was showing a copy one night and I told a friend we should see it, ( I'd seen it myself in the cinema, he hadn't) a few minutes in he leant to me and said man this is boring....by the end he was in tears...
This movie is a masterpiece and a thrilling American epic set during the french and Indian war which is a fascinating conflict in and of itself. The soundtrack and scenery were great, the battle sequences were heart pounding , the acting was superb.
It didn't get the credit at the Academy Awards it clearly deserved, should have at least been nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay- clearly a far better film than Enchanted April and I would argue superior to A Few Good Men and Scent of a Woman, both nominated for best film.
I agree--what I liked was that the American Indian figures were not stereotyped but portrayed as people of the land who were fighting for their own rights and beliefs and who were more intelligent than they were perceived to be by the British element
Both Lewis and Stowe were astonishing in this movie. Bravo for the writers and director not to fill the air with words when a subtle movement or look will convey so much more. It's a brilliant piece of cinema.
Madeline Stowe is so beautiful! This is my favorite movie of all-time! It is so realistic they did an awesome job in making this as real as possible! My heart still jumps in my chest when they are in the valley and the Indians attack! Thank you, Micheal Mann, for making this classic a classic again for all time! The soundtrack really made this movie what it is without it. It would not be the same movie so glad it won so many awards!
I agree. The movie wouldn't be at all the same without Wes Studi's performance. Brilliant and forever memorable. It all seemed so real and convincing. The last windup scene at the end of the movie where they ascend the mountain was spellbinding. Terrific movie making and retelling of a classic novel.
What an amazing movie. I love the passion he has for Cora. An alpha male that reaches every woman watching this movie. Wes Studi is a great actor but terrified me in this character. I would not want to meet him on a lonely forest. The entire movie was a symphony of acting, varied characters, actors and music that tied it all together for me. Mr. Lewis never disappoints in his performances.
The music in the movie is stunning, the scenery is gorgeous, and the acting is terrific. There's action, history, and romance all blending into one heck of a sweeping, epic movie.
@ 5:30 the scene between Hawkeye and Cora was so intense and so real. The Kind of love scene women desire the "love of their lives to exhibit " in their defense if ever the case presented itself. You could feel the love and the strength in each of them. Hawkeye gave Cora strength to become even more of who she was, "You stay alive...you submit...I will find you... You're strong... You submit... I will find you...no matter how long...no matter how far... I will find you." Those words gave me what I needed, when I was going through something similar, and to this day I believe those words and how they were played out between them two really stuck with me. And taking this on a spiritual plain, this somehow is what the LORD is asking of all his Children, even though satan takes you through a hard and many difficult times in our lives. But if we stay true, to JESUS CHRIST, HE WILL FIND YOU... if you submit and obey His Will and Know His Purpose for our lives. HE will Come for us if we hold on and stay true to His Plan. He will shelter us always in the time of a storm!! Cora and Hawkeye! I loved their Love Story and their strength together! Add GOD's Son to that equation and "Many waters …. remember cannot drown LOVE!!!
I stood on top of the waterfall about 5ft from the drop about a week after they wrapped on filming this at Chimney Rock. Years later they built and over hang made of wood. The view you could see where they had the village too. Me and my pops hiked the top while my mom and sisters took the river path. Something I will never forget.
Since the day I saw this in the theater, this has always been the most romantic movie I have ever seen!! Even today, when I hear the music I get brought back to the movie in my mind. Actually, this movie got me into hiking in the Catskill mountains, which I still do after 30 years. This was a powerful movie!
I could not agree with you more. The only flaw in the movie for me, was that the Uncas/Alice characters were not developed more. Eric Schweig deserved more screen time, if only for aesthetics. He was stunning on screen.
James Fennimore Cooper would indeed be proud. Thank you to my high school English class instructors for having us read this epic. Fantastic, fantastic movie as well.
To hear the director narrate that “looking at you miss” scene was amazing. I’ve seen it before but now I’m dumbfounded by the depth that one scene had in itself. They just don’t make movies like this anymore. Now it’s flippin remakes and live action remakes. There is just no unique idea for movies anymore. Damn shame
I was young and had no concept of men when this movie came out but I remember seeing Daniel Day Lewis running with his hair and thinking wow he is glorious. He and Madeleine were perfectly casted.
Having seen this movie countless times in the past..I’m extremely envious of those discovering this extraordinary piece of film for the first time..for me personally it’s amongst those quintessential films that entices one into the moment..it totally engrosses you..this film will live on forever!

There is a one minute segment at 47:30 that epitomizes the intersection of DDL and MM's attention to detail: when hawkeye and usus cover the escaping messenger from the fort. the combination of DDL obvious muscle memory to reload and aim the musket and reach for a reloaded one as the soldier runs through the shaded nighttime woods still gives me chills every time i watch it. smh truly amazing movie.
The chemistry between Daniel Day-Lewis and Madeleine Stowe was so great, relatable, grounded, raw and real in The Last Of The Mohicans, the love story between Hawkeye and Cora Munro is one of the best things about this movie, so is Russell Means, Wes Studi, Eric Schweig and very good group of Native Americans actors and I love the movie, it is the best.

You can tell they cut out a whole lot that shouldn't have been cut. My guess is that the studio demanded it. I wish there was a way to get a hold of the director's original cut.
Have you seen the one with the alternative ending? In the finished movie release Chingachgook didn't have a monologue at the end. The first time I saw the one where he did have this short but exquisite monologue and it wasn't cut, I cried, then went on line to buy it.

I Love this movie. Only thing I love more is Madeline Stowe. Stole my heart in 'Revenge', earned it in this movie. At the end, did I just hear insights about the imposed changes on a land, people, society and way of life because of mass migration? heh-heh.
Probably my favourite film of all time. When I watch it I go through thinking the Duncan characters an absolute scumbag. But end up feeling sorry for him at the end lol even though I've seen it a thousand times.
This is my favorite movie. Period. The musical score is as integral as the amazing acting. It’s a wonderful modernized version of James Fenimore Cooper’s classic book. I don’t have a favorite scene, there are too many incredible moments in the film. And at the very end, Chingachgook’s words are the perfect way to end the movie. (In the original film release version. They botched the end in the directors cut IMO).
As much as I would love to see DDL return to acting, I see clearly how he put his physical body through to create as only he could do. I am happy for him that retired to live contently and happily ever after with his family. Hope gets a grand child who continues his acting talents for future movie buffs like me.
