I was with Russell Means when he made a phone call from a payphone at our local TV station in Cleveland, Ohio. He wanted to contact his agent. When he hung up the phone he jumped up and down and said “I got the part, I got the part!’” His long leather coat and his long braids were flapping in the air as he jumped for joy. Little did I know that the movie was going to be The Last of the Mohicans. Thank you for these interesting videos on the making of the movie. They are greatly appreciated. I thank you from my heart. A timeless classic has been made.
Wow, an incredible family story!! I recall studying about the Trail of Tears in school, and how heartbreaking and wrong it was. I'm so glad your ancestor was able to escape!!

I've had someone explain all the lack of originality in books and movies nowdays to me. in book publishing, unless you are already famous ( a Steven King or JK Rowling) publishers agree to publish your book if THEY get the later rights to movies and merchandising. after a few times of this, people quit trying to publish, or they go to tiny publishers. In movies, you present an original script, the good ol' boys only work with people they already know. so they bring in a known script writer to redo and modify YOUR script, and either then put their name first, so people take notice of it, or you get left off altogether. Again, people quit trying to present original stuff.

One of the greatest movies I have ever seen. The music is so very beautiful. Moving. Tears at ones soul. Every time I watch this movie I beg for the ending to change. It never does. And I cry. Again.
Russell Means, Wes Studi and Eric Schweig and the other Native Americans actors of The Last Of The Mohicans were so good, strong and very good fighters, the epic scene fight between C and Magua was so good and physical it still takes my breath away, they are the best.

This movie made such an impression on my daughter at the age of 10 when we watched it together she finally understood it was OK to be a blonde haired, blue-eyed child of a Huron mother who had dark hair and dark brown eyes. Her pride was strong , her back straight and her love of all her relations no longer doubted. She was complete.
I watched this in the theater originally. By myself. And cried during the introduction. The music was so powerful. And the scenery so beautiful...I broke into tears.

The Last Mohican is one of the very few movies or TV shows who managed to break your heart and give you hope at the same time at the end. The whole movie is just a jawdropping experience from start to finale. Kudos to everyone who took part in creating it.

The chemistry of the actors, the photography, the music and the breadth of the heart breaking scenes ...I feel like I'm right there with them.
Unlike the book, the movie presented Magua, not as so much as a villain, but an adversary. He was my favorite character. I've been an outdoorsman involved in historical reenacting for 40 years and this movie captured the period like no other I have ever seen, but this was not history and should not be viewed as such. This was theater in a historical context with absolutely stunning scenery as a backdrop. It was a magnificent artistic creation.

I know men dont usually say this, but this is a beautiful movie with a bit of everything that makes a movie great. By far one of my favorite. Was hooked the first time I saw it when I was 17 and have seen it probably 100 times. It never gets old!
I was 14 when this movie came out. I was absolutely captivated by everything about this movie. One of the best scores of all time. Wes Studi should have had a best supporting nod. Epic film.
The last 12 minutes of the movie were some of the best cinematic experiences I have ever had the pleasure of witnessing. I am from Kentucky and see those landscapes a lot. It really hit home.
Brilliant cast, the very best! Day Lewis, Studi, Means, Schweig, Stowe, May, Roeves & Waddington. Exquisite music, one of my top 10. And yet, amidst the main story of war, the British & French, the Native Americans and Hawkeye and Cora. There is also the story of the love of father and son, Chingachgook and Uncas and Hawkeye too. But on a deeper level, there is the lightning quick and yet profound love story between Uncas and Alice. When the heroic brave Uncas dies trying to save Alice, it is so distressing. But when the brave Alice steps off the cliff, backwards, sacrificing her life too; for Uncas, the man who she loved...is absolutely heartbreaking. They did not have the luxury of speaking, nor being together like Hawkeye and Cora. But through their amazing acting you felt their love was just as palpable. It's in my top ten of movies, up in the top 3 actually. 5 stars, 💔💔💔💔💔
I would imagine that artificial lighting had to be used to some extent, but the combination of light and darkness in every scene looked absolutely natural and brought forth the exquisite beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountain landscape of North Carolina where all the exterior scenes were filmed.
I've watched this film many times. It never gets old and the attention to detail and historical accuracy will continue to help this movie stand the test of time. Extremely great work by all involved.
Most movies have a great deal of background and foundation work, if you will. Then there is an epic film such as "The Last of the Mohicans". Seeing this 3-part documentary really conveys the depth, breadth and length of research and recreation necessary to accurately portray the expanse of this film. Dante Spinotti's cinematography is breath-taking, and Trevor Jones' score is outstanding. Michael Mann's insistence on perfection pays dividends that movie lovers will enjoy for decades to come. The actors become their characters, and their performances leave an indelible stamp upon our minds. Kudos to all for this stupendous achievement. If this film is not my favorite of all time, it is surely in my Top 3.
Always loved this movie but now I am in total awe of what michael mann accomplished. Absolutely amazing and enormously epic. Could have never envisioned how much work they put in this masterpiece
This is one of the top 3 all-time perfect movie masterpieces. Each component is a superlative example of moviemaking. Together they are perfection. This movie came together without flaw and can not be matched or improved upon.
STILL stands the test of time!! ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL FILM!!! They really don't make em like they used to! FK, time just keeps flying on by. 1000 years from now someone will watch this movie and be like WHOA, that was over a THOUSAND YEARS ago!!
That moment when the blonde sister, contemplating her fate with Magua, adopts a peculiar look of serenity, and simply leans back over the abyss and plummets out of sight-WOW. 30 years on, it’s still emotional to recall that moment, which is both agonizing and strangely beautiful, in its own terrible way. Only film, and a great director, can give you that moment. The actor’s instinct in the moment, the brilliant slow blurring of her falling body, becoming something like spirit before our eyes, then replaced in the frame with only thin air - WOW. And that was just ONE moment in a film full of them ! What a true work of art on every level.
I really wish the majority of Alice's scenes didn't end up on the cutting room floor. she was always my favourite character. And Jodhi May did and excellent job.
The entire character of Alice is a type and foreshadow of my love life... And Uncas, desire, devotion, unspoken, yet deeper than any could imagine. So tragic. Pure loss and pure regret. Not to mention bad timing and fated to doom and misery and death. Sad? Yeah. I know, I've lived it. But the romance and poetry of the way her character was depicted... and the loss and relationship and so many things so much greater than her controlled her and her destiny. Uncas and Alice were fated to never love. That is the true tragedy. That is how I feel such connection and relatability to their plight.
Jesus Christ I love this film... it is my favorite film of all times... The actors are incrediable, the soundtrack perfect the director view of the entire context is simply marvelous , we may say this film is old but still it can touch the hearts of many around the world, specially us, americans; despite of being from South America, I can feel the conflit of the natives and the europeans and from that conflit a new thing came about , and it was the america colonised and it gave birth to a new identity, no longer native and neither european. Throughtout history of mankind it has happened so many times, the celts gave away to the romans, the romans to the germanic and etc.. this film is a vivid representation of this period of transmutation and it also shows how ephemeral life can be but at the same time it is so meaninful and adventurous...
Michael Mann is my all time favourite film director. He brings a level of depth, realism, and attention to detail that no other director can match. A true auteur. Heat, Thief, Man Hunter, Collateral, The Last of the Mohicans, The Insider, Ali. All incredible works of art.
Wish Michael Mann would put out a director's cut/extended cut versions. I loved the theatrical version, and I would like to see more of the cut scenes.
The greatest act of physical and mental courage was called "counting coup". To run out alone, to touch the enemy warrior, and to run away without yourself being killed, was the highest honor in many native cultures. Killing from a distance was not as esteemed as touching your enemy. The scene where the lone warrior ran from the woods then killing the English soldier was such an example.
One of the best movies ever made if not the best. It has it all, authenticity, faithfulness to history, great music, high acting level, battle scenes, as for the stunning Nature, it's God made, No comment! water symbolism is very powerful throughout the movie. I fell in love with the masterpiece as well as the landscape. Bravo Michale Mann and crew.
This is one of those films thats TOO good for me to watch multiple times, its almost too painful like you are watching a tragedy in real life and want to get involved. The cinematography and natural surroundings adds into that, I think the only other movie that really did that for me was Aguirre: Wrath of God, another movie I can hardly watch because its THAT good.
Noticed there was no attention paid Russell means nor Eric schweig Magua too.. They made this movie more than madeleine and Nathaniel Uncas 💖 💖 💖 Beautiful man 🌷 I would never have watched it so many times if it had not been for Uncas and Magua
This film makes all the super hero/transformer flicks look like trivia. Why can't Hollywood understand this? We aren't all 13 year olds that watch movies.
Don't blame Hollywood. They're going to make movies that make the most money. It's a business. Blame moviegoers for flocking to those garbage cgi marvel crapfests.
This movie is a total masterpiece and will remain in my library as a classic Everything so beautifully balanced and thought through I can't say enough of how much I love this Movie❤!
They talked about Hawk Eye and Cora's relationship. But i like Alice's and the other guy's one. They didn't even talk to each other but they ended up loving each other. That was awesome. I hated so much how he got killed trying to save her. Fucking sucks ass. I wanted him to save her so bad. All of the actors in this movie played their characters so well.
You have to remember the zeitgeist of the time that the novel was written and the whites had to be seen as the heroes to giver authority for them to take the lands away from the idigenous peoples.
this film is a stunning masterpiece beyond any words able to do justice to it. the acting, atmosphere, scenery, dress, historic accuracy, and the music! a mesmerizing TRIP! ABSOLUTELY THE BEST! CANNOT PRAISE IT ENOUGH! GLORIOUS ACHCEIVEMENT!
It's one of my favorite films of all time. Pre revolutionary America is my favorite period of history. It was brought to glorious life in this masterpiece.
What I like most about this great film is that it will last forever to be discovered again and again. Perfect cast, the right director, the music and everything else in this film. Really appreciate this series telling us about how much effort went into the details of the film.
The music the Gael, is by Scottish singer songwriter Dougie Maclean. This piece of music was composed by him originally for the Loch Ness monster exhibition.
Fantastic documentary on what is bar none, my favorite movie ever. If there was never a perfect film, this is close. The storyline, casting, the production values, cinematography, the music, the scenery. I have the DVD dirctor's cut as well as the VHS theatre version. I really cannot say how many times I have watched them.
Truly, a major contributing factor in the magnificence of this film is the sound track. The love theme is hauntingly beautiful. and the arrangement by Trevor Jones of "The Gael" is more felt than heard however I never see any credit give to Dougie Mac Lean for creating it.
Keep in mind, when you look at this, you are looking at Michael Mann. This masterpiece is his vision, and he elicited magnificent performances out of all of these people, and it all comes together to make a work of art of this power and beauty. A lesser filmmaker produces a lesser film.
Absolutely the greatest soundtrack ever put to film. Hands down. No contest. Of all time. The most beautiful and intensely rich and pure expression of soul combined with the same in the movie and story and creation. The music is literally it’s own character in the movie, and couldn’t exist or be the same one without the other. This movie moves me deeper than any other, give me chills, gives me tears. The only thing that I have ever seen even come close to capturing the magnificent beauty of God’s creation in nature 🙏 ❤️
It amazes me the work, training, costumes, buildings etc. It's overwhelming! Wonder if that fort still exists for tourists. If you were to count the hours, the crew, and support people are probably never paid enough but the experience is memorable. I would have loved to be an extra but I noticed there weren't any "well fed people" around back then. Constantly running, fighting, eating a meat and low carb diet!
The film is art. Art lasts forever. It was an astutely cast ensemble, well trained, and a set of finely trained, multiple-tasking extras. Dialogue was superb. Special effects were seemingly authentic and colorfully appealing. as with weaponry, costumes were more authentic than any I've ever seen in a film, myself being a life-long movie buff, now at age 80. I, being a nit picker re: film continuity, saw only 4 small flubs in the film, along with one too stagey scene. The theme music was hauntingly 18th century: a work so yearning in its story and telling a different story to each listener. The use of natural lighting was astonishing to the eye. You're not supposed to compare works of art to other works of art, but this film is as artistic as China Town. A thank you to every single person who participated in producing this piece of art.
I own 3 movies, and Last of the Mohicans is one of them. I watch it every summer for the past 20 years. It moves me every time, bringing a tear to my eye. All the actors and the production staff were outstanding. Best movie ever.
I think Wes Studi's best performance. No green screens, no computer manipulation, just intense storytelling plus a ton of real prep to pull it off. And the Irish music just so perfect for this movie.
Most of it was filmed in the mountains of western North Carolina. I highly recommend a visit to this beautiful part of the USA. The Blue Ridge Mts and surrounding countryside are awe inspiring. I've lived here since 2019 and can never get enough of it.
Best movie ever made. I watch it over and over. When we bought a 1723 farmhouse in the woods in upstate Connecticut in 2002 and there was an original hand dug tunnel in the cellar that went underground almost a quarter mile to escape Indian raids. 33 acres in the woods took me back to that period in time. This movie made that experience so real. This movie takes you back in time.
I love Michael Mann, he is one of the best and my favourite directors, writers and producers and what he did with The Last Of The Mohicans was phenomenal, the cast was perfect, the writing, so was the locations, scenery, the camera work, the costuming, the action and the music, I love the movie and it is the best.
This movie and the soundtrack resonates heavily with me. My Irish/British/German ancestors settled this country and were some of the poor people pushing westward. The movie gives me the visual and historical context and being one who is easily moved by music, the soundtrack is hypnotic, antique, and connects me back to my pioneer family.
Its no exaggeration to say this is one of the 10 best movies ever made.
No doubt, sir.

Did they win any Oscars?
This is probably the most romantic and tragic film I've ever seen. Just brilliant.
Uncas and Alice dying together just tears your heart apart
No CGI ppl, this is real WORK. Look at the sets, the clothes...oh man.
Love it, it would be great in 30 years, today's CGI heavy stuff will be absolutely forgotten (maybe 2 of 100 known).
Thats Michael Mann for ya. If hes gonna do it. Hes gonna do it authentic as possible.
I still have my British uniform from the film.
I don't even bother watching movies made now. Everything Green Screen, CGI, actors not even in the same set or space. It shows and they are terrible.

5 stars,
💔💔💔💔💔
Half of the contribution in this movie goes to soundtrack ... 😍😙😚
Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman, awesome movie track composers.
I would thumbs up this a million times if I could
Very much so.
Yeah but the visuals!
They filmed one hell of a movie just to fit one of the most epic soundtracks ever written.
Spectacular production. The study of light is so authentic it's reminiscent of the best paintings.
YES!!! I'm so grateful to have found this documentary, for it surely does enhance one's experience of the film!
Always loved this movie but now I am in total awe of what michael mann accomplished. Absolutely amazing and enormously epic. Could have never envisioned how much work they put in this masterpiece
Excellent documentary that adds a lot to this first class movie.
The documentary was almost as good as the film.
"We were trying to make their lives come alive... and make a piece of history come alive" Sir, you did just that!
This is one of the top 3 all-time perfect movie masterpieces. Each component is a superlative example of moviemaking. Together they are perfection. This movie came together without flaw and can not be matched or improved upon.
so true.
Except that George Lucas helped with some editing and left out some important lines that would have been great to hear in the original film.
Nathan Tisdale i think the best single scene is where she turns and looks back at magua before jumping
11bravo1789 yes I agree I think i was literally 4 or 5 years old when I saw my dad watching that movie and it stick with me ever since
Agreed...She needed more scenes. Still have a crush lol
That is how I feel such connection and relatability to their plight.
she is maggie on Game of Thrones
Probably my favorite film of all time and one I can watch over and over. Amazingly cohesive piece of work!
It is indeed one of my favorite 10 of all time as well. Incredible, intense, and powerful.
Perfect!
Michael Mann is my all time favourite film director. He brings a level of depth, realism, and attention to detail that no other director can match. A true auteur.
Heat, Thief, Man Hunter, Collateral, The Last of the Mohicans, The Insider, Ali. All incredible works of art.
Well said. My sentiments as well.
Cleverson Santos
Good post.
Wish Michael Mann would put out a director's cut/extended cut versions. I loved the theatrical version, and I would like to see more of the cut scenes.
Magnificent, spectacular- every minute of this movie is a staggering achievement in cinematography, music, scenery, costumes, acting.
I lost count how many times I have watched this movie, one of the best ever made, and thank you for all the hard work you put into it!
Best movie ever.
Good for you Gail....
@@mikearchibald744 ,overwhelming sadness, the loss of a culture and its people.
@@douglaszolton8985 I forgot, "The Mission" is like that too.
Noticed there was no attention paid Russell means nor Eric schweig Magua too.. They made this movie more than madeleine and Nathaniel
Uncas 💖 💖 💖 Beautiful man 🌷 I would never have watched it so many times if it had not been for Uncas and Magua
Madeline Stowe is absolutely stunning and an amazing actor
Best movie I ever see. The historical accuracy, music, filming location make it the best movie ever made.
What makes the film so great? Imo: real nature, real natives and then music, director and actors.💕
@@alswearengen6427 so true..sad
@@joeloveland6283 All the passion and labour that has gone into making this film at every level is astounding.
I agree. Uncas & Alice better chemistry
Uchiha Hikaku Agree, many of Uncas Alice’s scenes were cut from the film.
That’s what made it more real my friend the point was he gave everything for her even though he came up short and failed at the cost of his life.
CAPT. DALE DYE!!!! This movie is so amazing. GOD it gives me goose bumps every time. Every time.
Been one of my favorite movies since i was 9 years old. Such a brilliant film. Will stand the test of time
One of my all time favourite films and that soundtrack is even better...
Masterpiece! Still holds up today, and it will hold up as a masterpiece of cinematic theatre until the end of modern man.
Best movie ever.
This movie is perfection, the story telling, acting, soundtracks, photography. A masterpiece! 10/10
Agree 100%.
My favorite movie ever. My family has been here since 1630. This movie makes me feel at home like no other.
The first Pulliam in the Americas was Edward Pulliam (1607-1650), who emigrated to Virginia in 1636. His son was your namesake.
I had ancestors on all three sides! ....plus I grew up only 40 miles south of Ft William Henry.
Micheal Mann, brilliant director.
Words can't explain how good Mann is
A true genuis
I remember watching it in a cinema in Jakarta and still kept sitting in my chair for about 5 minutes after the closing credits had ended.
I own 3 movies, and Last of the Mohicans is one of them. I watch it every summer for the past 20 years. It moves me every time, bringing a tear to my eye. All the actors and the production staff were outstanding.
Best movie ever.
This just might be my favorite movie of all time. I watch this movie over and over and never get tired of it.
Now I know why this film came out so incredible. One of my favorite of all time.
Один из лучших фильмов об освоении Америки!!! С наилучшими пожеланиями из России.
One of the best movies ever made, in my opinion.
Musically brilliant as well.
Watched this with my mom in the theater when I was 8 years old. Still love It. Michael man was ahead of his time
One of the VERY few movies I'll watch anytime it's on! It stands up the first time or the 20th time you watch it!
I think Wes Studi's best performance. No green screens, no computer manipulation, just intense storytelling plus a ton of real prep to pull it off. And the Irish music just so perfect for this movie.
This is my favorite movie of all time, its a better telling than the book.
Thank You!
Im so fascinated with the scope of work and skill that goes into movie making, especially war type of movies! And this movie is one of my favorites.!
From top to bottom, cinematography, directing, script, acting, costumes, sound track, just a great, great film.
A great movie chronicling the struggles of an important time in American history. This is one of those movies where every element work just right.
One of my top movies if not my favorite. Absolute MASTERPIECE.
After million times of watching this film i still can't hold tears when Uncas dies.
The last ten minutes no script ,deaths ,suicide ,anger , revenge all on the back of a perfect soundtrack
A great film, and the last 12 minutes are epic. Not to be forgotten.
