  • Mozart composed Apollo and Hyacinth when he was only 11 years old. He was commissioned to write it as an intermedium during a play at an all boys Catholic School in Salzburg. But although it's roots are in Greek Mythology, in the hands of monk and librettist, Father Rufinus Widl, the story takes some interesting new turns. Video also features Natus cadit, a soprano and tenor duet.

Thanks for watching. Like most composers Mozart has a ton of great rep that never gets performed. I’m looking forward to sharing more of it on the channel!

Apollo et Hyacinthus isn't actually an opera, it's a Latin intermezzo, in other words, a piece that never really gains popularity. Mozart's first real opera would have to be La finta semplice, K.51, which is an opera buffa in three acts, written directly after his one-act singspiel Bastien und Bastienne, K.50. If you're including Mozart's non-operatic works, his list of operas would be something like this:
    1. Die Schuldigkeit des ersten Gebots, K.35 (1767)
    2. Grabmusik, K.42 (1767)
    3. Apollo et Hyacinthus, K.38 (1767)
    4. Bastien und Bastienne, K.50 (1768)
    5. La finta semplice, K.51 (1768)
    6. Mitridate, re di Ponto, K.87 (1770)
    7. Ascanio in Alba, K.111 (1771)
    8. Il sogno di Scipione, K.126 (1772)
    9. Lucio Silla (1772)
    10. La finta giardiniera, K.196 (1774-75)
    11. Il re pastore, K.208 (1775)
    12. Thamos, Konig in Agypten, K.345 (incidental music; 1773)
    13. Zaide, K.344 (incomplete; 1779-80)
    14. Idomeneo, re di Creta, K.366 (1780)
    15. Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail (1781)
    16. L'oca del Cairo (fragment; 1783)
    17. Lo sposo deluso, K.430 (fragment; 1783)
    18. Der Schauspieldirektor, K.486 (1786)
    19. Le nozze di Figaro, K.492 (1786)
    20. Don Giovanni, K.527 (1787)
    21. Cosi fan tutte, K.588 (1789)
    22. Der Stein der Weisen (collaboration; 1790)
    23. Die Zauberflöte, K.620 (1791)
    24. La clemenza di Tito, K.621 (1791)

Thanks for the clarification! I do note in the video that this is an intermezzo and not technically an opera, but the work and the history behind it were so interesting. Plus, as you mentioned, it’s not well-known so I wanted to put it out there.
