What is a Fach?

- Fach means voice type in German and it's a system singers and opera companies use to effectively hire and protect the vocal health of opera singers. It's also a fun word to say!

If there's any way you could turn up the volume on your mic, that'd be AMAZING! You're kind of quiet, so I have to turn the sound up all the way and even still it's hard to hear you... then when an ad comes on, it's blaring hahaha. Just an idea, if possible! :)

Thanks Effie! Great question!! So the issue is that there’s 2 components to the Fach system. The first is the way we use it to categorize opera voices and the second is the way we use it to categorize opera roles. For the voice side, singers only have one voice (obviously), but they could be suited for roles in different Fach categories. So myself for example, I said lyric coloratura because that seems to describe my voice well, but not all lyric coloratura roles would be a great fit for me and there are some roles in other fachs, like soubrette or light lyric, that would be a great fit as well. It’s kind of confusing, but that’s what’s bound to happen when we try to systemize and label something as unique as the human voice. Thanks for the video suggestion!!
