    "There's a lot of farting during the night, and the farts resound with thunderous might." -- W.A. Mozart Nobody should be surprised by Mozart's love of bathroom humor. Everyone is multi-faceted. And there's really no contradiction between beautiful music and vulgar humor anyway; why should we expect a great musician to also be a dour prude? Also, that humor is pretty universally human. The oldest recorded joke is a fart-joke, and most people find this stuff funny to some degree.

    If a boy had only two choices to be a sailor or a castrato, consider the terrible conditions of sailors such as filthy conditions and rotten food crawling with maggots, and scurvey, the boy just might be dilligent in his singing studies and voluntarily become a castrato.

    Hi! Thank you for the video. I'm going to be auditioning for my College choir and had zero idea what they meant by "Prepare an Art Song", so this helped a LOT! What songs would you reccomend for a Soprano? Or songs that you'd find tends to show off voice capabilities? I want to find a song that kind of reminds me of musical theatre (as that's what I usually tend to sing, but unfortunately can't audition with this time :,)). Thank you again!

    • @MeetMozart
      @MeetMozart Рік тому

      Sound glad you found the video helpful! Recommending songs always gets a little tricky since I don’t know your voice in particular, but I’d say most college choirs are probably looking for something from the standard English Art Song Rep. Some composers I could recommend are Roger Quilter, Ralph Vaughn Williams, or Henry Purcell, there’s also a book called The First Book of Soprano Solos that has a lot of standard English Art Song Rep. As for showing off the voice, I’m a huge proponent of good singing being the best way to show off your voice 😂, meaning sing something you feel like you can sing well consistently. I’d also keep in mind that if you have an accompanist at the audition, sticking with standards is a good idea-the better they know a piece, the less likely they are to make a mistake that might throw you off. But if you’re generally looking for Art Songs that have a jazzy/musical theater feel, you should check out our series with composer, Ellen Mandel. She’s amazing and has a really wide variety of songs. They just aren’t standards…yet ;)

    Thanks! Oe of my favorite art song composers is Ralph Vaughan Williams! In fact, when I was choosing music for a recital with my voice teacher we had selected a solo, plus "A ew Life" from the musical Jekyll & Hyde. I discovered half way through learning the music that the poem Williams had used was written by Robert Louis Stevenson, who created the source material for Frank Wildhorne's musical, "Jekyll & Hyde".

    I always was taught to learn what you are singing about - translation to the other words of a different language. Always. I didn't feel validated as a singer if I didn't know what I was singing about. I wrote them in under a word either in English and used phonetics for proper pronunciation of the other language. I never-ever sang a song or piece without knowing what I am singing about. It makes all the difference when performing, especially in a different language when it comes to emoting a certain emotion. Thanks Angie. Glad I caught up with this one!

    Thank you for making this video! Just wanted to chime in, that as a pro opera singer that has sung nearly 70 roles, I have a developed a completely different process that focuses less on text, academia or plunking out notes. There are just many ways to get to the goal! Best of luck to you! P.S. I listen to a lot of recordings, the older, the better!

    Cracking to know that Schubert was "talented" - and such a relief! What's "Schubert's art song"? Is it anything like "arthouse" cinema? If so, what's Schubert's Grindhouse (apart from me warbling and grunting and having a damn good scratch in the bath...who's nicked the nail-clippers this time? Must I be reduced to chewing my toes again?) But I'm immensely inspired to know that you can have a deep dive in three minutes flat. At this rate I could break the world record, and I can't even swim. Amongst so many jewels on Schubert that stand out here on UA-cam, might I recommend for starters "About Schubert" by Per Tengstrand, and a brand-new series from London: "Schubert in Life and Songs"? Captivating a fresh, nervous audience comes not from baby-talk, but by telling a story that deserves to be told and drawing your punters in like a master story-teller. My heart bleeds for Fewdozenz below, craving to know more and being patronised with "Music, Arts and PE" as one rusted wreckers' yard of a subject. Welcome to the future... But did you know that the deepest dive ever is 332 meters, set by Ahmed Gabr in 2014? Who says we don't live in a perfect world? 😵‍💫😜

      Nothing like a bit of sarcasm and coffee for breakfast! Long-winded and insulting as they might be, I’m actually inclined to agree with your comments, which is why I switched the format and no longer do multiple part videos where I try to give a scope of a composer through their music…which is what we do in parts 2, 3, and 4, but instead focus on only one piece with more story telling. Nice to know I’ve changed gears in the right direction. At any rate this video seems to have helped someone, so I guess I’ll leave it up and perhaps revisit Schubert in more detail in the future. Feel free to visit parts 2, 3, and 4 or this series. I’m sure you’ll be equally as disappointed, but even facetious soliloquies count as engagement, so I look forward to hearing your thoughts ;)

    So no one can perfect two different fach? And would be interesting to hear the same fach from different people

    • @MeetMozart
      @MeetMozart Рік тому

      Thanks Effie! Great question!! So the issue is that there’s 2 components to the Fach system. The first is the way we use it to categorize opera voices and the second is the way we use it to categorize opera roles. For the voice side, singers only have one voice (obviously), but they could be suited for roles in different Fach categories. So myself for example, I said lyric coloratura because that seems to describe my voice well, but not all lyric coloratura roles would be a great fit for me and there are some roles in other fachs, like soubrette or light lyric, that would be a great fit as well. It’s kind of confusing, but that’s what’s bound to happen when we try to systemize and label something as unique as the human voice. Thanks for the video suggestion!!

    This just in! I came across a reference to Jerome writing that before he translated the Hebrew Bible into the Latin Vulgate, he visited Jewish communities to hear how they recite scripture. He complemented their group metrical chants of the Bible's song-poetry. So I decided to try applying the same manner of prosodic recitation to the songs and psalms in the Vulgate... and I found that they are metrical as well. *head explodes* Also news: I figured out the correct recitation rhythm of Hebrew song-poetry. It took some input from Linguistics and a strict calculation of syllable length according to the vowel pointing and accent-punctuation. Yup: the psalms are metrical and much more rhythmically sophisticated than Greek song-poetry! They're quite modern in variety and taste, imo.
