When you rent cars in Japan, also ask to provide you with an ETC card. Electronic Toll card. You can use ETC lanes without having to stop at toll gates and pay. Biggest merit however is that when Etc activated, toll charges discounted up to 70 percent. Depends on the the time of day and highways. Not all rental car companies will have enough supply of ETC cards so make sure to ask for it when you make bookings. When you return the car back, the rental office will scan the card and charge you toll spent. For those who have Japanese credit cards, you can ask to issue Etc card so that you don’t have to rent a card each time renting a car.

As a foreigner who has lived in Japan for over 30 years, nice to see a really good blog that explains things so well. Very simple blogs, but definitely makes people want to come to Japan and enjoy the beautiful country sides. The cities are cool, but real Japan is where these guys are going.
The first time I drove in Japan was this year in August. Drove from Kyoto to Osaka. Was a rather easy experience overall except in Osaka, where some people are a bit impatient and the route diversions can be somewhat confusing sometimes. But the best thing is the night view when you drive along the Hanshin expressway. And this is coming from an 18 year old who got his license 3 months ago.
I know it’s been 3 years but I am 20 looking to go next year. Did you get charged any premium for being a young driver?
@@AT-nj9krI think renting a car at this young age is always more expensive, because statistically young drivers do crashes more often. I'm also 20 and experienced this in other countries. But im currently in japan and we are ging to rent a car in the near future and here it isnt that expensive compared to other contries like eurooean countries.
82! I can only hope to be that strong if I hit that age.

Personal experiences from a 9/10 days road trip from Komaki City to Shikoku and back. Agree with Norm, I drove in a few different countries and Japanese drivers were possibly the most polite and law abiding. Beside being a bit confused with some road signage and the positioning of the traffic lights driving was really smooth (of course more so in the stunning Shikoku countryside). The only time I got 'anxious' was driving through Osaka on the way to Awaji Island. More then anxious it was a bit of a slog! Now, I didn't rent a car as I was with a Japanese friend and we used her uncle's car (fun fact: we stopped at a 7/11 and bought a week insurance from a machine....only in Japan!) but I had a international driving permit just to be on the safe side of the law. One highlight of the trip was sleeping in the car at the numerous Stations of The Road that you can find anywhere in Japan. We had a station wagon with seats that would recline all the way. And a futon. It was pretty comfy and the Station of The Roads were always a bit of an adventure to stay in. They offer 24 hrs toilet facility, Wi-Fi and then from around 8 am or 9, depending how rural you are, the shop will open where you can buy local products and have breakfast. And if you are lucky a morning onsen, as at times they might be located just nearby or just in the same place where you parked!

Just want to add for others that may now consider buying rental car insurance at 7/11, this insurance cannot be used to cover a rental car (unless things have changed recently). It does cover cars that have been borrowed from friends or family only, not paid rentals.
@@petestrash Yeah, hope I was not too unclear on that! :) It still my top three things to report back here in Ireland when people ask me about Japan though!! Such a great idea!

@@tlb4210 Indeed Tracey. Plus, by sleeping in the car for 5 nights out of 9 we then could splash some money on some nice Ryokan for a couple of nights. The other two we stayed in an amazing hostel that used to be a primary school. A great spot for a very little money (no showers or kitchens but onsen not too far)
This is an absolutely beautiful video. The scenes are gorgeous, but the different types of footage, the editing, the sound quality... Amazing! I seriously can’t even imagine how long it must have taken to get all of the footage to create this 14 minute video. I applaud you, Norm. Yay! A backroad video, I love that. That's the way I would travel around in any country, you will see so much more interesting places that way. I've been doing that type of travels, most time I go to work in Norway (live in Sweden). And I think you miss so much when you take the big roads. I hope to see more inspiring videos in the future. With this kind of content your channel will be growing in spades! Great video, really want to explore the countryside of Japan the next trip I take, I think car may be the way to go (especially the fact they drive the same side as the UK!).

every new video you bring out from this particular trip makes me genuily wonder how much time you spend making it. and i mean not just editing but filming it! you have so many good angles n scene shots but you’re only 2 people!(n often you are even alone in your vids) how often do you 2 go back n forth to get a certain shot cause you thought it would look nice? n o assume you also use drones?

I will never forget the road trip I did setting off from Tokyo Haneda airport to Yamagata Fukushima. I went KO-ed and dozed off at the foot of Mount Zao Yamagata . Why so because I reached Haneda airport at 1:30am and waited till 8am to collect my rental car, didn’t get to sleep throughout and have to do 500km drive. It was a very good experience minus off the hectic part 😂

Oh that's so useful showing how a petrol station works. I remember going to the US and not having a clue how to get petrol. I always meant to make a video showing how to do it in the UK, but you're not allowed your cell phone out when getting petrol.

Awesome stuff, when renting a car on the international driver license make sure you contact the rental company to ensure you get the right one.
The one I got was not accepted so I missed out and had to cancel the drive but still did so much in tokyo.

Love the video so much, the editing and filming is always top notch, the views look amazing. Although I am used to Scotland's mountain roads, I think Japan's roads are definitely smaller and definitely higher up as well so I am not sure if I would be comfortable driving on them, but the views are definitely worth it. Also love the ending ahaha, I always think, what happens when you drive off like that :D. Cant wait for the next adventure!

If you're ok in the highlands then you'll be alright in Japan, the reason being that speed limits are stupidly low (most people speed but still not as fast as UK roads) and Japanese drivers tend to leave a lot more space, as in what would be considered normal spacing in the UK (2sec rule) is actually pretty close in Japan n means the person is hoping to get past (with the car in fronts permission which feels strange too)

3:13 My experience in Edmonton is that people treat a turn signal indicating a lane change as some kind of challenge.
I always back off and give people space, but some drivers are downright offended that someone would dare to want to move into THEIR lane. :-(
I love your little Honda "Box". It reminds me of an article I once read about a man driving an original Miata on a freeway in Japan.
He thought he was going pretty fast and then "...we were savagely passed by what looked like a 4-slice toaster on skateboard wheels". :-)

Although I agree that tokyo people tend to be too busy to talk I did meet a really friendly granny at a sushi restaurant while I was in tokyo a few weeks ago as she gave me tips on what best dishes to order. All the places on your adventure were really cool but I think the parts where you talk to locals really give the videos that extra depth.

I tend to go with nuts and coffee! Good balance, and keeps me full and energized so I can drive for hours!!!

ID the controls for your wipers, turn signals, and headlights :) Seems like it would be straightforward, but I've had problems with these in both Germany and Japan. Also, driving in Japan (coming from the US) remember to yield your right turns. Rural Japan is fantastic to drive. I drove from Misawa up Oirase Gorge and lake Towada. Just missed the fall colors, but still beautiful. Thanks for the tips and wonderful vid as always.
