It shows how good he was that he broke a string at the end and had to improvise in a split second, *while the guitar was behind his back*. If you know the ending of the song, you catch it, but it does nothing to take away from it whatsoever. He could do endless improvisation in the same octave and never mess up. He was truly one with his instrument.

Trivia....this was filmed at Starwood Amphitheater in Nashville Tennessee around 1987. Mr. Vaughn was one of the guest on Charlie Daniel's "Volunteer Jam" held every year in the eighties. Unfortunately, along with Stevie, Charlie Daniel's and Starwood are both gone.
Mr.Daniels died earlier this year and Starwood was demolished in the early 2000's to make way for a strip mall that never happened. Nothing left but the Starwood parking lot.

That was Christopher Cross's guitar that SRV uses. It as an old, beat-up trade-in that he got from a guitar shop and rebuilt/customized. SRV said it felt right, which helped him do many of the things he did with which he couldn't really with other guitars.

@John English. That's perhaps one of the most impressive things about his playing. He was improvising and just making it up about 95% of the time, and yet it always sounded good AND still fit the song.
People usually list him or Jimi Hendrix as the greatest guitarist ever. Both were amazing and played different styles of music, but if I was forced to pick which one I think had more pure and raw talent, I would have to say SRV (although Jimi Hendrix was absolutely amazing!).
      Have a good one.

Stevie could literally play a guitar any way he wanted and it would sound badass. Most guitarists wouldn't even be able to play one or two full songs with his guitar b/c of the thick strings he used...and Stevie was always breaking them. Dude was a master. I see Dimebag Darrell the same way. He knew how to play so well that it didn't matter how drunk or high he was, he would always nail it and rip a face melting solo.

The insane thing about playing behind his back, is that because he unclips his strap, his guitar is no longer hanging across the back of his shoulder so he’s holding the guitar and playing those massive 13 gauge strings. I think that’s why when he slings the guitar back in front of him, that he plays it on his hip for a bit of a rest. Insanely talented 💪🏼❤️
